It was our first time here and it was early in the evening. We were greeted right away and seated. We had appetizers but everyone got to it before we were able to take pics. I had the chicken slovaki, husband had the shrimp with pasta and our daughter had the chicken Alfredo. The entrees were a nice portion, enough to take leftovers. Gyros were a bit messy but quite tasty. I had the lamb, and it was fresh grilled. The fries were really unpleasant. Greasy and those breaded kind from Costco. But the real letdown happened after I handed in my credit card. They have the audacity to charge me a 3% penalty for paying with a credit card. It's 2026 in 2 days, and I was penalized for using a credit card. Of course you can just delete it from the tip, but it's the principal. The food was not 3% cheaper than your average Greek restaurant. The prices were exactly the same as any other restaurant in town, only your penalized for using a credit card. We visited Athena's as a last minute choice while in St. Augustine for Night of Lights. It was slow day for the event and also for the restaurant. The hostess was pleasant and our server was sweet. Awwww! Really enjoyed this restuarant! We popped in on Sat night and they weren't too busy, which I was surprised cause it's in a great area, right on the main strip! Our server was amazing, so sweet and welcoming! We started with the flaming cheese, so fun, and unique taste, with the lemon squeezed on top, served with hot pita it was gone in flash. We stopped by before Nights of Lights and we were overall very impressed! The restaurant is right near the lights and had a fair number of tables available. I enjoyed the atmosphere and liked that the noise level inside was not crazy. We were all really hungry and the plates were definitely a good size! I split the spinach pie and pastistio plate. Both were really yummy! The spinach pie was a bit dry, but the filling was flavorful. I really liked the pastistio. It has great seasoning and was really satisfying. So we just left the book walking downtown St Augistine. Walking by Athena restaurant saw it was Greek. I couldn't help myself being half Greek I had to turn in. Because Peggy's boyfriend turned and she turned in. Tonya waited on us was pleasant as ever. Looking at the menu it's very authentic. I ordered the Greek Village salad Peggy ordered Caesar salad with chicken. Yum Yum can't wait I'm starving of course you know what that means it's guaranteed to taste better. The service is quick as well as your food arriving. I am a local and this place is never busy and they have great murals of St A history on all of walls in panoramic views of the city. An old Greek family owns this place, the Alcazar Cafe and Georgie's diner. The tzatziki is the best because of the high garlic level which we love. The saganaki cheese app for $15 is totally worth it. You will be hard pressed to find a Greek place in the area that offers this app. Who doesn't love acid and fat with flames!? You can order the paired dry red Greek wine to accompany this dish. The gyro is enormous and it is very to hard to finish. It is a great value for the restaurant. There is a lot gyro meat. There is not huge chunks of feta as you would expect. That is an upcharge. I adore feta but I don't get it as the sandwich is great without it. The house fries come on a good sized plate and are seasoned. They are hot and tasty. Great add for $4. We got 2 gyro sandwiches, saganaki and one Pepsi. Always a requirement at a Greek restaurant. Done with gusto and of course oompah! Very good and the pita points were very fresh I had the gyro platter traditional. We ate here because the other Greek restaurant we've eaten at before was closed. Mostly disappointed by our experience here. Hummus platter only came with 6 pita slices and not enough hummus for those 6 pieces. Flavor of the dish was good though, but overpriced. We each had the lamb gyro, good amount of food and the meat was very flavorful. Had the baklava, again disappointing. Had to use a knife to cut through as it was so tough. The Classic Greek Combo comes with a large portion of the Moussaka, Pastitsio, and Spinach Pie. The highlight of the meal was the Spinach Pie. It was flakey and packed full of tangy feta and spinach. Absolutely delicious. To end the meal we also ordered the Flowerless Chocolate Tarte and the Galaktoboureko. The chocolate tarte was an intense chocolate explosion. Rich, decadent and sweet. Also the Galaktoboureko is a must try if you haven't had it before. Layers of flakey phyllo pastry on top of a thick layer of warm custard layer all drizzled with warm cinnamon honey. Perfect timing as we were looking up places to eat. A few people were exiting as we were walking up and I had asked what they thought about the food. Great service. Food was a huge disappointment after many years of making a special trip to Saint Augustine just to go there. The potatoes were at least a day old. Brown and disgusting. I asked for fresh and miraculously beautiful looking and tasting potatoes were provided. This means they tried to pawn off old food to us. Not smart business practices. My husband who is former restaurant owner and cook similar to this, ordered ribeye steak which had a large portion of fat (the cook said if too much fat they will give me more) - that means cook acknowledged that the steak was not adequate to serve but did it anyway. After we complained they offered free desert which we did not want. They gave us $10 off instead. Bottom line bad business practice and our meal was over $120. I will not come back and will no longer recommend to people to come there especially after the owner who was sitting in last booth disappeared rather than come to table and find out what was wrong. Both our plates came with Greek salad, and one piece of stuffed grape leaves. If I have one complaint, it would be that there wasn't enough salad dressing in my salad but the food were packed with flavors and were filling. The wait staff was courteous and professional and asked if I liked my food because since the serving was so large and I get full easily, it looked like I may not have touched much of it.
