This place is a little Greek gem. On our visit to St Augustine, we parked on the main square in downtown and saw a restaurant with a Greek flag waving on the storefront and decided to check it out. They had all Greek favorites like spinach pie, pastitsio, flaming cheese and grape leaves. We ordered calamari, grape leaves and a Greek salad. Along with very nice Chardonnay to drink. It was all excellent! The salad had house made dressing and fresh ingredients. The calamari was cooked to perfection and served with tomato based sauce that was not too heavy and added a nice spice to the crispy squid. The grape leaves were just the way I like them chilled and served with Kalamata olives, pickled peppers, and tomato wedges with the yummy house dressing Peter our waiter was attentive and just nice! He offered great service and was always there just when we needed him. He put in extra effort when we wanted something sour to cut the sweetness of the baklava we had for dessert. They didn't have any extra yogurt, but offered sour cream and it made the dish. Honestly, we wanted to kidnap Peter and the chef. Speaking of the chef. His name is Morris and he is wonderful. He took the time to come out and speak to us, that made us feel special. The Athena is a great place to eat I recommend it highly. read more

Finding ourselves hungry and within the vicinity of this Greek restaurant, my friend and I decided to give it a try, thanks to its Yelp rating. We stood around waiting for a table, though not for too long, and were sat at a booth. We waited a bit to get a menu, apparently, there was some miscommunication as to who would be waiting on us. Once that was clarified, we placed our orders of the leg of lamb special. Once our meals arrived, confusion set in once again, as I was expecting an actual leg, like a lamb shank, not slices of lamb. I was not impressed with the seasoning either, as it was bland, and Greek food is known for being flavorful. Overall, for me, it was a "meh", as in it could be a lot worse, but it could also be a lot better, so I'd say it was average. My friend thought it was okay, but readily agreed that we'd had better back in South Florida. The desserts were great, however, and generously portioned. I don't know if there is really such a thing as Greek rice pudding as I have never seen that on a menu -- not in the U.S. nor in Europe -- so the authenticity factor may be low, but it was very sweet and delicious, regardless. read more

As a tour guide, Athena is one of the restaurants where I frequently take my guests. The staff is truly amazing, friendly, and enthusiastic! They make my guests feel welcomed and like they're home! The food is always delicious and filling! We start out with Saginaki, followed by a lamb gyro, washed down with the most perfect red wine! Last night, The Tasting Tours hosted a corporate group of 70 people. We split into groups, and I chose to take my group to Athena. They were excited about having Greek food, but were more amazed once we arrived! Susan really put on a "flaming" show when lighting the Saginaki! The service was on point and the food was scrumptious! My guests couldn't get enough of the fresh, homemade tzatziki sauce! We decided to try this restaurant when we were visiting the nights of lights, service was good, We ordered the calamari for our appetizer, it was a very small portion, half of it was overcooked, seemed to be mixed in with some newer calamari, we both had the lamb gyros, the lettuce on our gyros was not fresh, actually mostly brown. It was a Friday night and every place we wanted to eat at had an hour wait so after strolling through the plaza we saw this place was mostly empty so we thought we'd give it a try. I've had my share of Greek food myself and wasn't expecting anything great . I ordered the chicken souvlaki combo & my wife ordered the Spanakopita combo. They were both tasty and well seasoned. They also have the Galaktoboureko dessert which was quite good too. Horrible customer service by man working at the register by the door. Attempted to dine with a service animal today. The man was clearly annoyed that I had a service animal and stated "make sure he stays on the floor, the owner doesn't want animals on the furniture". I have a service animal, not a wild, exotic animal that climbs all over restaurant tables. It was extremely rude and disappointing. I have never (in 9 years of having a service animal) have been treated like an obligation. We left and will never return or recommend this restaurant. read more

Went to St. Augustine to see their huge light display for the holidays with my family and boyfriend. I had no idea every single restaurant in town would have a 2+ hour wait time. I never write reviews but this service was too horrible to not write one. Firstly, the place was close to empty and the employees got very frustrated with us because we had a large party. Like do you guys not want extra customers? Lol. Next, as the second half of the party comes in the employees were giving us negative looks, but as we sat and saw the menu there is already 18% gratuity added to all checks so it seems like the waiters don't really give a damn about the customers. As the waiter takes my tables order I then proceed to ask "Oh do you guys happen to have Falafel here?" And straight away with a very harsh tone and exasperated look the waiter says "NO". I'm sorry but for a restaurant that claims to be a Greek restaurant and doesn't have falafel is LUDICROUS! The food is overpriced and not worth it lol, they also cheat you out on the fires because they are such small portions. I truly don't understand how this place has 4 stars. Awesome Greek restaurant in the heart of St. Augustine! Attentive service and big menu left everyone in my group full and happy. Breakfast is available until 2 pm so we had a pancakes and bacon order and couldn't believe how tasty they were. They do not come up as a breakfast recommendation in Downtown St Augustine BUT they should! Monday morning it's so quiet and peaceful and no one in the restaurant. . . Just weeks before Christmas. This is hard to get and the food was delicious. The corn beef hash was perfect and my husband's omelette was delicious. He's a potato lover and said the home fries were just the best. Not too crunchy -crispy but cooked through and tasty. We live outside St Augustine and will be back here for breakfast when we dock our boat here for the night! read more

On a good note the staff was sooo sweet and I think the owner was coming around making sure all guest were happy. The music though is soooo loud its hard to hear conversation at your table. Greek food is one of my favorite cuisines and unfortunately this just did not live up to my expectations of the Greek food I've grown accustomed to in Europe. To start of with the appetizer- the hummus platter was just very underwhelming to say the least, the pita tasted just old and hard, definitely not what I've grown accustomed to and the portions of hummus and tzatziki were rather small for the price tag of the appetizer. Now on to the main course I ordered the gyro combo. This too was unfortunately also a little underwhelming, a plus though was the salad tasted fresh, it was not just a bag of mixed greens put on a plate. Now the "gyro" was confusing, I get it was served open faced but I literally just got four pieces of pita with shaved meat on top and some tzatziki sauce on the side. Now if you're used to the real deal Greek food this "gyro" just does not live up to its name. The meat was seasoned but to me did not seem like it came freshly shaven from a spit but I could be wrong. My parents and husbands too were left feeling unimpressed. But since traveling alone with my child, who's barely 2 at the moment, some reassurance with a smile or something helps a lot. Greek food is not on the top of my list but this place impressed me to the point where I will return! In St. Augustine I normally eat at the same spot but I'm glad my group stumbled to this place on Sunday. The atmosphere was strange, lighting could be brighter and more welcoming, and the waiter "greeted" us by asking what we would like to drink. I don't even know his name.. As you can tell from previous posts asides from food, I am very picky when it comes to service. We felt kind of rushed and the restaurant was not warm at all. The gentleman, bless his heart, tried to make a joke, but it came out as awkward. BUT! The food was delicious that I ended up getting something similar at work the next day since I was craving my meal. I ordered the Chicken Souvlaki, which is similar to an open-faced gyro. DELICIOUS! I'm a super sauce guy so I'm glad there was a TON of tzatziki sauce on it. On the side note, my bank statement was a little off, I called, and the manager got back to me super quick to answer any questions! Great service there.
