We really liked this place and plan to go back. I got the pork vermicelli bowl and it was really tasty. Plenty of juicy pork slices. I asked for peanut sauce to go with it. My husband got the wonton soup, that I thought would be boring, but that clear broth that they came in was just so good. But the star of the night, was a friend who got the grilled short rib plate...it hit the jackpot! Service was a bit slow, especially when we had to watch all the delicious looking food being delivered to other people. The quality of the food was better than your average Vietnamese joint. I haven't really walked around Assembly row in a while and how it has changed in the past few years. Volo courts and all. One of the places that has been on my mind was An nam which opened this year and is offering some Vietnamese flavor to this area. I realized this is actually their second location as there is also a location in Harvard Square. One thing they are not missing in the restaurant is the lights, it's very bright when you walk in which was perfect for my food photos tehe. They are busier on weekends and the wait for a table took about 45+ minutes understandably because it was a smaller restaurant and looked to seat around 40 people. Apparently their busy hours are around 6-8pm those days so if you want to eat here be prepared to wait. The staff was great in getting our table ready once they knew they had a spot ready for us. Their menu is so big and menu items are ranging from like $18-30. The appetizers come with like 2-4 items so for bigger groups of 4 or plus you might want to get a bunch of apps or double up on an order. The portion size of entree items really depends on what you get. For example, multiple people in our party got noodles and that thing was huge and they were left stuffed. However, I went with the claypot and my friend got a rice dish and the mound of rice was small and so was the meat/fish portion. I was not full when I left and when I got home I was hungry again. However, I have never tried catfish and am always nervous about fish dishes being very fishy but the flavor was so lovely and complex. It reminded me of some of the flavors I would taste when my mom makes Nigerian food. A refreshing modern update/spin on Vietnamese dining, in other words not your average Pho/bowls/stirfry. The pho oxtail broth was very well done, and the noodles were fresh & thick rice noodles, an unexpected treat. The spring rolls were freshly wrapped in rice skin with vermicelli and lettuce, and the peanut dip tasted freshly made. The stirfry vegetables were fresh, and large sliced, a nice touch. Sadness. I've been learning more about food and the poisons we put in our bodies without even knowing it. I ate here a zillion times but the cleaner I eat the more I noticed that I would feel so sluggish and tired after eating here. Vietnamese is usually light and refreshing. So I thought, "Oh man, they must use MSG. Please, please tell me they don't." Sure enough I called and asked. The response I got was kind of crazy. The gentleman said, "Yes. We use MSG. All Vietnamese food has MSG." I really hope that's not the case. So far I've been making my own Pho. I have called other places too, like popular Viet Citron. All MSG. Sadness. MSG is so bad for you. Came here because I wanted to try the conch salad and Combo 2. Was kind of disappointed, especially at the price. They also use the thicker rice noodles for the vermicelli bowls (not the thin white rice ones which are normally used) and that was kind of weird to me. The service was not consistent. They also had a horror movie on the TV above the bar the entire meal and that kind of made me lose my appetite. I feel like this place is a lot like Assembly. Very pretty, nicely organized and generally pretty bland. It's not bad, by any measure. In terms of what you can get in Assembly, it's actually pretty good. But its competition is a $9 big mac wannabe (Shake Shack is terrible, fight me), so that's not really saying much. I'm struggling a bit with this review because I do think the food, unlike Assembly and its car-centric new-mall relatives, has potential. It just needs to be a bit more brave with its spice. Gentrified Vietnamese food. I wouldn't go as far as saying that it's a tourist trap but you're definitely paying more for the bougie decor and location. It's not bad but just not worth what they charge. Their target audience seems to be the rich foreigners and yuppie crowds. Food wise, they could never top the flavorful Vietnamese familial soul cooking that you would find in neighborhoods like Dorchester, Quincy, Malden and Worcester but still it's better than the fake Vietnamese restaurants that are actually run by Chinese/Thai people who just throw unauthentic Pho in there to attract people. Unfortunately when we went they only had about 30% of their dinner specials menu. I would recommend getting the appetizers and non-pho items as the Pho was surpassingly disappointing. They only had the basic Pho Tai, not Dac Biet meaning it didn't come with all of the mixed meats, tripe, and tendon, instead it was basic beef and meatballs only. At first they didn't give us the mints, bean sprouts and sauces either we had to ask for them. Further I would say the broth was a bit basic, didn't have enough spices. So if you're more concerned about aesthetics and modern decor then sure you'll like it here. If you're here for the food and value, you can find better elsewhere. The food is alright, but the service is slow even though we are the only customers. We ordered the goi oc (conch salad), An Nam special platter (option 2), An Nam signature fine vermicelli platter, thit heo (pork belly), pho tai, bo vien (rare steak, meatballs pho, and beef stew (never served even the waiter asked if we want bread or rice noodle - but we did not realize until we left the restaurant and my friend did not check the receipt). Both platters were highly recommended, and the pork belly clay pot was served with rice. There is nothing special about the pho, but the portion is small, and no other size is available like other Vietnamese restaurants. This is my most expensive Vietnamese restaurant. Opened just two weeks ago, i can see myself as a regular customer. The place is modern and spacious. Staff are friendly and knowledgeable. Got the grilled shrimp vermicelli bowl (please note that these are not headless peeled shrimps). It was so refreshing, not heavy at all. Would have been a better experience if the shrimps were deveined. The white chicken meat was not overcooked or chewy in the Pho Ga so I was relieved. They do not skimp out on the beef in the Pho Tai. Instead of the thin sliced beef, they use beef tenderloin which can be a risk because the soup has to be super hot. If not, the meat will be undercooked. Both broths were light and not salty in comparison to other Vietnamese restaurants. For those who want to order ice cream for yourself or kids, the Ah Nam banana ice cream is not your typical ice cream. It's Vietnam's specialty - frozen banana wrapped in chewy dough with shredded coconut and peanut on top. I would go back and try the ah nam chicken pho. I heard they serve in drummy or meat on bone :) Prices are on pricer side but so is everything in Assembly Row. read more

New fave Viet restaurant around Boston! And that's coming from a Little Saigon native :) this is the only Viet place I've tried around here that's on par with the ones on the west coast. Goi (salad) was generous and fresh tasting; ask for peanuts with it!!! Banh khot was crispy, hot, great coconut flavor (must try for people new to Viet food). Soft shell crab was also generous and had a variety of crab pieces, even roe. Bo kho could've used more carrots but that's just my preference; get the banh mi with this one! I believe it's baked in house, crispy, fragrant, piping hot! Beef was perfectly tender and sizeable. Not to mention the beautiful ambiance and attentive staff :) Margarita was our server, and so sweet, but all the staff paid lots of attention to us. Dessert menu was unique and substantial - banana ice cream was authentic to the ones I've had on the street/my family makes in Saigon. I love that An Nam breaks the mold a bit in terms of what is typically served at "nicer" Viet restaurants around Boston (ie. pho, rice, noodles), and they deliver on it! The meat on the beef bowl was great! Loved the grilled meat aroma. The pho was just okay. I was surprised when they brought it out in a ramen type bowl, and the broth was lacking the pungent flavor and taste I would usually expect pho to have. Decent place for Vietnamese food. I've eaten here a few times for lunch and most of the dishes I've tried have been very good. The chicken pho is the only one that I think you can skip (it was really salty to me). My favorites from here are the rice plates (grilled pork/chicken/beef are all good), steamed bun (starter), and the vermicelli bowls. The banh mi is pretty tasty too but they're a little small in size. It's a very cute interior and has a much more modern look than your average Vietnamese restaurant. Mostly clean, although there were one or two times where I saw clumps of hair and dust on the floor. Bathroom is nice and clean though, so that's a plus. I don't usually write a bad review (and other reviews of this place seem far more positive, so I'm really wondering what went wrong), but I feel like this time I have to. First of all, the place is attractive looking and busy, and this was on a Tuesday Night in August. We didn't have to wait for a table though, and a waiter took our orders promptly. We ordered Goi Cuon (salad roll) as an appetizer and then Pho Ga (Chicken Pho) and Beef with Yellow Noodles. All are Vietnamese staples that I've had countless other times in other places. We waited 45 minutes before the Salad Rolls arrived, and only after they had left the toppings for the Pho (Thai Basil, Bean Sprouts and Lime). I had to ask one waiter what was up and he said '2 Minutes'. That turned out to be more like 10 minutes. Then, about a minute later, after we had taken maybe one bite of the salad rolls, one of the soups arrived. We waited and after about 7 more minutes, the other soup arrived. The salad rolls were almost entirely shredded lettuce with a bit chewy pork. Very little vermicelli and no coriander or mint. They were also poorly rolled, with a lot of overlap, so that parts were very thick and hard to chew through. The dipping sauce was average. The Chicken soup was passable, but the broth had little flavour. On the other had, the beef broth had some good anise flavour but the beef was so fatty that my companion finally gave up trying to eat it. It was literally rippled with fat, and just about inedible. I complained about the beef soup to a waiter and he said that maybe I should have ordered a different soup, that might have a more lean cut of beef. I've had this dish, and this was neither accurate, nor the right answer. The bill came, with charges for everything. In short, they didn't know how to prepare these dishes nor serve customers. We won't be going back, and I'm terribly disappointed. I've eaten in Vietnamese restaurants in the US, Canada and Vietnam, and this was probably some of the worst renditions of these dishes I've ever had, and with laughably bad service. read more

It was a Friday night, so the restaurant was super busy, and the host seemed very overwhelmed and scattered. There were a few people waiting outside for a table. I had to wait several minutes before placing my to-go order (I had tried to call it in beforehand, but no one answered the phone). I asked for a receipt, and the host went back to the kitchen for several minutes, and forgot to bring back my receipt. He told me that it would take about 15-20 minutes for my order to be ready, so I left and came back about 20 minutes later. The food was still not ready, so I sat at the bar and waited another five minutes. The bahn mi itself was delicious, but the service would discourage me from returning here. I know at other restaurants, the bartender is in charge of to-go orders, and I think this is what should be happening here. The bartender seemed far less busy than the host. read more

A new place in assembly row that opened up and sells Vietnamese food. I got some chicken dish which cost me a little over $20 and was closer to $30 after tax and tip. You can be the judge of the portion of the food based on the picture but it was a little lackluster for the cost. I saw the price of the pho which was also too high for pho so my conclusion is that most of the menu items are bit too expensive overpriced. It seems like a more upscale Vietnamese restaurant but Vietnamese food works better as a cheaper and no-frills cuisine. The chicken dish was good but not enough food for the price I paid. It had chicken liver which is not something I order much. Each of the individual items on the dish wasn't bad but rice + chicken should never be this expensive.
