No "we're about to close" energy, which I appreciated. We started with the creamy collard dip, which is basically their take on spinach-artichoke dip, but with collards. Really good. I do think the chips were a little too heavy for the dip--a thinner chip would've been perfect--but that's a small note. The chicken pancake tacos were probably my favorite. The chicken was fried perfectly and still really moist. And at this point, I'm convinced Savannah just knows how to cook chicken. Everywhere we went, the chicken was consistently good. My partner got the grilled apple pie sandwich, which has fried chicken, grilled apples and bacon. He's not even a big pork person, but that bacon was so crispy and the whole combination just worked. Even the waffle fries were good--crispy, fresh and actually seasoned. We had the Grateful Dead and Wicked Kiwi cocktails, plus a couple of shots, and the drinks were strong, good and reasonably priced. Honestly, I don't have a ton of notes here. It's not trying to be some elevated dining experience. It's just a really good late-night spot with good food, strong drinks, friendly service and a fun atmosphere. So, that felt terrific, given their attention to making the space handicap accessible. I would only return for that specific reason - not for the food. We were there for a birthday, so we got the tasting menu and was told that it was served family style. We were 3 people, but for each course they brought out 2 plates of food (except for a single plate for the salad course). So, it felt weird sharing the dishes, like you didn't just get half and then to take 1/3 of 2 plates is also peculiar. Why not serve each course genuinely family style on a larger dish? For example, I usually tried 1/2 of each plate, but then there were some leftovers. And, one of the courses (the salad) came only on one tiny plate, and there was only one piece of the peach. So, there was no way to split that at all. They also brought us all new empty dishes and silverware after every course. It would have been easier to just give us each our own portion on our own plates. I kept thinking about all the dishes that they would need to wash, and it felt so wasteful. In fact, we had to ask for serving spoons, as they didn't offer that with the family style either. And honestly, the best course was the fried potatoes. They also brought us each one tiny tator tot with fancy sauce which was good. But, so tiny that it wasn't enough. The worst course was the tri tip meat. It had been cooked very rare which I like. But, it was so chewy that I found myself having to chew and chew and ... well, I couldn't eat. None of us liked that course, and it felt like a shame to leave it behind. I researched tri tip, and it seems that it needs to be cut in a certain way. The dessert was also really good. But overall, I was disappointed. Some places feel too fancy, and they forget that people are there to actually eat something rather than be confused by trying to guess what they are eating. For example, the delicious tator tot had a smoked oyster mayo sauce. But, the quantity of the sauce was so sparse, I didn't notice the oyster flavor at all. Which may I be honest and say was the best corn bread I've ever tasted in my life? Along with the coconut curry dish I received. You can tell the dish was truly thought out and had a purpose with every bite. I loved that at the end they brought us lavender pallet cleansers. I loved these so much I started utalizing them at home. My absolute favorite of the whole evening was surprisingly our free dessert. It was almost a marshmallow flavor but crunchy. We were sat in what I believe used to be a front parlour, by a window over looking the street. We had a dual service with one person being the "main" server, his name was Michael. He was in charge of giving us the spiel and answering our questions. A woman (I forget her name, sorry! But she was lovely) was in charge of running the food and clearing the plates. It was a very well run machine. The menu is pre set, but there were choices on some of the courses, like course where an option was a soft shelled crab - I definitely wanted to take advantage of that! We started off with Biscuits with butter and homemade orange marmalade, these were delightful, so fluffy and soft, and the marmalade was sweet, not bitter like it sometimes can be. The Amuse bouche was a trio of tiny items: a pimento cheese tart, a mussel with chipotle sauce and panko, and a square of salmon with mild wasabi and ginger. The salmon was definitely my favorite. The fifth course had a special as I noted before, so I opted to go for that, it was a soft shell crab with garlic, herbs and a vidalia onion slaw. Topped with peanuts and a white wine sauce. I think my favorite course of them all was the scallops with the carrots and the whipped ricotta - so simple but so delicious! Phenomenal special occasion place or just to cross off your bucket list. If I am in Savannah again (and the likelihood is high, its such an amazing city), I will be back.
