Stayed in Thunderbolt area. This place was in walking distance. We rolled the dice and actually had a very nice dinner. Shrimp Creole was absolutely delicious. Fresh and flavorful. The crab cakes. Also, chefs kiss. Pricy. This place is a bit pricy for what it is. Service wasn't the greatest but also not the worse. Comfortable dining area and outdoor patio. Would we go back, yes. Stumbled upon this great place while camping at Skidaway in Savannah. Cute inside with mixed variety of table and chairs. I had the western omelet that came with a tasty biscuit and Irish cheddar grits. Very yummy. My husband had their take on a Monte Cristo. Thick bread, grilled deli ham, Swiss cheese and jam. Dipped in French toast batter and pan grilled. We loved it! Service was very good. We were there for brunch which ended at 2 (we arrived at 1). Many arrived after us. This was a great carribean meal on our first night in Savannah visiting friends. It's a cute little spot and they're serving up jerk chicken and all your favorite carribean flavors. The carribean bruschetta and the friend shrimp were our favorite appetizers. The tartar sauce with the fried shrimp was incredible. I shared the PONCE de Leon and the hot mama with a friend and the flavors of the hot mama were my favorite. Had to wait a few days to finally eat here as it's closed a few weekdays,and boy was it worth it! We had as a starter the goat cheese bruschetta with chutney&warm bread....mind blown! So delicious! Dinner was what then called blackened pasta, which consisted of mushrooms,caramelized onions with the most delicious chicken in a creamy garlic parm sauce, trust me you want to order it. So yummy. After a burger ordered well done was brought out raw twice my dining companion just asked for her order to be canceled. When the bill came she was charged not only for her iced tea but also for the coleslaw which was the included side that was with her Burger. Upon discussing it with the manager we were told, "well she ate it didn't she? " The food and service were fine, but the manager couldn't have been more rude or condescending. What a cute restaurant, in my town. Me and my daughter came for brunch and ordered from their brunch menu. I had a simple breakfast with oj and my daughter had the jerk BLT. I was completely satisfied with my meal everything was cooked perfectly. My daughter said her sandwich was very delicious but could be a bit more spicy (jerk style). You'll find a laid back, coastal, flip flop vibe with plenty of loyal customers at Tortuga's. Artwork of marine life and Caribbean Island scenes adorn the walls and are priced "For Sale". I opted for the Big Breakfast because it offered a variety of items, and it was recommended by a table of locals sitting nearby. The andouille sausage, made in house, was delish! The eggs were cooked as ordered, the biscuit was tender and hefty, and the coarse ground grits, topped with optional pepper jack cheese, were delish. The Big Breakfast also comes with a choice of pancakes or French toast. The option of Texas toast, French Toast with their homemade praline pecan topping was quite tasty! Always on the ready for fried shrimp, my daughter and I enjoyed a side of their lightly coated, crispy fried shrimp. I would certainly return just for the fried shrimp! Their homemade tartar sauce was very good, and I appreciated the lumps of horseradish, served on top of the ketchup, so that you could blend your desired amount. We had a Spinach salad and added shrimp. We also had a non remarkable bp&j and a Ponce Delion. I must have not paid attention to the menu because it came with 25 slices of Jalepenos.I don't mind a little heat so I took off 16 and left 9. It was a good sandwich. We ended sharing 2 bread puddings for 3 people. Eating outside we saw a small park but the gate was locked. It had a small pier and a good view of the river. We would return in the future. read more

I was going to eat at Tubby's (as it showed up first on Yelp search) but after seeing how busy it was, and not wanting to deal with that, I discovered this little gem of a place... ...As you are entering the town of Thunderbolt, GA (what a cool name for a town) you can easily miss this place on the right - it's part of a very tiny strip "mall", but not hard to find. Parking is limited, but I got there at an off time so I was able to park right up and front. Lightly decorated, they have quite a bit of indoor dining, a modest bar or sorts, and some outdoor dining they have mostly shaded - I chose to sit outside. Their menu is mostly breakfast and brunch fare, but they do have a fun lunch items - I chose they jerked chicken with black beans and rice - a wonderful surprise as it was delicious. As someone of Cuban decent, seeing black bean on yellow rice seemed a more than a bit odd to me, but it worked. I downed the entire plate - but keep in mind, it was spicy. They also have a decent craft beer menu, some local, some of the bigger names, and the macros - so there is something for everyone. Service was friendly, making sure I had what I needed and when I needed it. So no complaints there. Truly, this is one of those instances you come across a place that doesn't look like much from the outside, but like a book, you have to go in and try it out. read more

This is right along the river in Thunderbolt. My group of 6 rolled in for brunch right at 10 or so. There was plenty of seating available, indoors and out. We opted to stay inside where it was nice and cool. The food was great. The asiago on the grits was good, though cheddar was also. The french toast was far and away the best dish. Everyone in the group wanted to try some and said it was great. Though everything else we got (omelettes, sandwiches, etc) was really good. They state they are a little understaffed, but our server was always there when needed. Though our food wasn't all ready at exactly the same time. For a small restaurant and the group we had, not an issue. Especially since some of it was the server needing to make a second trip anyway. read more

This place has lots of potential. Four of us arrived for a early dinner at about 6:30. The location is easy to get to and there's parking nearby. There's plenty of tables inside and the artwork on the walls is nice (except that they misspelled the name of their town- see picture). There was no effort to decorate the tables and the silverware was wrapped in paper napkins. They just don't have their act together at all. They had a decent beer list and a few wines but they don't have a liquor license and that's just slack. Their prices are high and the silly way the prices are presented impacted my decision. For example, their blackened pasta dish was $16.95 but the added protein was absurdly expensive ($13 for chicken, $16 for shrimp, & $21 for grouper). I got the pasta with no protein and it was pretty good. My wife's salad was ordered with dressing on the side and of course they dumped it on the salad and the waitress didn't catch it and delivered it that way. The service was fair, but she didn't know the specials and she didn't really know the menu. Overall I was quite disappointed and I doubt we will go back. read more

Found this gem in Thunderbolt, GA. I had the Ms Lois with the blackened grouper and duck eggs. So good. My wife had the Hooked scrambler with havarti jalapeño grits. Everything was amazing and it wasn't over crowded. Wife also had a butter shot Irish coffee that was pleasant. read more

Very nice experience... We've seen this place several times as our boat marina is across the street. The restaurant is unassuming, casual, and comfortable. We were seated immediately and got our drinks quickly. There's a lot to choose from on the menu -- we did brunch -- from omelets to scrambles, pancakes, biscuits, and specials. I had the big breakfast and asked for cheese on my eggs and my bacon crisp. I got both. The pancake was fluffy and yummy. The grits lacked a creaminess to me, but overall had a good taste. Others in the group enjoyed the sausage, French toast, Portobello and grouper scramble, and biscuits that take up the whole plate. Our server was attentive and our drinks constantly were refilled without asking. As for handicapped accessibility, there's one handicapped spot up front, a small step to get in and out, and the bathroom has bars and a wide door. Looking forward to coming again and trying more! This establishment is a small restaurant located in the city of Thunderbolt along the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway. My wife and I arrived at around 12:30 PM and I ordered the Tortuga Big Breakfast from the brunch menu. This consisted of two eggs, bacon, French toast, and Tortuga's potatoes served with a warm biscuit. The food was delivered quickly and all of it was delicious. The soft scrambled eggs with cheese were spot on, with the bacon crispy just as I like it. Do not expect anything fancy reference the decor or ambiance. However, the excellent quality of the food and service is worth a trip to this restaurant. read more

Liz was fantastic! She was speedy and gave great recommendations. Our food was AMAZING, we ordered the lump crab cake, the pb&j with Brie griddle sandwich, and huevos rancheros bowl. Everything was absolutely delicious the grits were perfect consistency and flavor, we ordered the praline sauce and dipped our pbj Brie sandwich in it and it was a whole new flavor journey that raised the bar for all other sandwiches going forward. Tortuga's fresh grouper tacos on their lunch special menu did not disappoint. A mixture of bacon, fresh tomatos with cole slaw was just the right mix of the to make it uniquely tasteful and satisfy my need for light, healthy and satisfying. The lunch crowd was a mixed group of multigenerational adults, the decor is simplistic and the service was excellent and the food timely. Definitely will return for more. read more

I moved away in 2016 and still dream about their food. I wish I still lived there just to be able to eat their food. Everything is made in house including their delicious praline sauce for their french toast. Their house made balsamic dressing is to die for. I've never had grits better than Tortuga's makes them. This Caribbean flair with their Maryland routes create the best crab cakes you can get without being in Maryland! Seriously... you have to try it or you're missing out. Maybe I just ordered the wrong thing, but I was very unimpressed. The staff was prompt and very nice people but aside from that, just under-impressed all around. The atmosphere also is fine, and it could be a really cute little restaurant, but I found my fried shrimp rather overpriced for what it was--supposedly local, fresh, shrimp (and indeed it may have been that) but fried in a very basic, uninspiring, batter. What is more, the fried shrimp doesn't come with a side: no hush puppies, no side dish, no bread--nothing. So you have to order a side--I got coleslaw--seperate. The coleslaw was also unimpressive. They have cocktail sauce, probably homemade, but no tartar sauce despite having a number of fish dishes on their menu which it would suit very well. I just felt for a local place with high reviews it would be better, but again, perhaps I ordered the wrong things. Apparently typical egg-based brunch items (and I don't eat eggs) are the rage here. read more

Great spot for breakfast! Tucked away in Thunderbolt, Tortuga's is one of my favorite spots for a yummy breakfast or brunch. The restaurant has a casual, island feel to it. The food is always delicious and the service is great! On my most recent visit, I got the Big Breakfast. It comes with two eggs any way, your choice of sausage or bacon, your choice of French toast or pancake, your choice of grits or potatoes, and one big delicious biscuit! It's a TON of food, and it's all cooked to perfection. The potatoes were really well seasoned. I tried my boyfriend's French toast and OMG. The praline sauce on top is so decadent and delicious- it's basically a dessert! I hate that I forget about this place! I've always had a great experience and the atmosphere is so relaxing. My boyfriend had never been, and even though he's not a huge breakfast fan, he really loved it! I'm sure we'll be back again soon! read more

The focaccia bread on my Panini Club was sturdy. I could have paddleboarded down the Wilmington River on it. Juicy hunks of grilled chicken fell out the back, shoulder to shoulder with crispy bacon, like drunk dudes falling out the back door down the road at Tubby's. The herb sauce held down those tricky red onions so they wouldn't make me regret sitting close to anyone in a waiting room. The fries were the fries. And again, Tortuga's, this quiet unassuming little cafe, next to a tattoo parlor and a red potato's throw from the Thunderbolt City Hall, delivered a respite from everyday grub, from everyday grubbiness. As someone new to the area I make an effort to try a new restaurant each time I dine out in search of that gem. This is t it. The overall experience of atmosphere, customer service, and products, was bland oatmeal with lobster bisque pricing and Ritz Carlton attitude. Unless you're ordering Chicken, the entire menu is mystery market pricing. The inside is simple, almost sterile, the products ok, and cold customer service that the high prices are difficult to rationalize to the experience. Five stars because... They cooked up a dish that usually releases a wet, sloppy mess and is sponged up by any carbohydratic (new word!) items such as bread or grits. Liquidic (another new word!) release was very slight and noninvasive. I ordered The Krull Attack Scrambler...which is a combination of eggs, crustaceans, and vegetables. Excellent texture and balance of seafood/landfood taste. The best grits I ever had. They had a solid structure and form. The flavor was balanced between grain and pepper. Next time I should top it off with cheese. The buttermilk biscuit was a nice addition to this meal. It had a warm, fluffy soft texture and tasted like any other buttermilk biscuit one may sink their snappers into. The customer service was good too, those people are nice! read more

Went for brunch. Unsweet teas were sour. Common problem unfortunately. But once informed staff made some more that were ok. All of us ordered scrambles. Mine (I forget the name) had shrimp and ribeye. My eggs were not overdone (which is rare) and just on the edge of runny nor were my shrimp overdone, however, two others who ordered the King George with shrimp were in fact a bit overdone on both. Surprisingly, the King George with grouper instead of shrimp was quite tasty (though took substantially longer that the rest). I subbed potatoes for grits. I had no idea the grits come out in a huge bowl with cheese melted all over the top or I may have changed my mind, especially as the subbed potatoes seemed like about two tablespoons worth. Shrimp are not "deveined" so the poop chute is in place and adds grit and iodine flavor. Cheese is heavy handed. I think this would please a lot of people but personally I find it a bit out of hand. Biscuit was good. Not cheap at about $15 per scramble. The rasta turtle on the outside doesn't really seem to match up with a bric-a-brac interior and sports memorabilia on the walls nor the menu for the most part but I suppose that doesn't really matter.
