Friendly Service, But Food Missed the Mark The place was packed when we visited, which gave it a nice, lively vibe. Service was warm and inviting, and the staff really made us feel welcome. Unfortunately, the food didn't quite measure up. Most dishes were overly salty (though to be fair, we usually cook with very little salt), and the chicken breast was dry and lacking flavor. My family and I were so excited to try this spot out as we have heard nothing but amazing things. We stopped by after our visit at the African art museum a little before 5pm on a Friday. However, when we got there they had a sign stating they would reopen at 5:30pm. So we decided to wait in the parking lot in the meantime as so did some other patrons. Once they opened, it took some time to get our orders in which was fine since we were trying decide what we wanted eat anyways. After we ordered, more people started to come in and it's a tight space inside. We patiently waited and it took about an hour for us to get our food. We went to our car to eat as the outside patio seating was still wet from the on and off rain. The turkey wing was very tender and tasty. The meat was juicy and fell right off the bone. The yellow rice had some hard pieces in it so that was no bueno. We all agreed that the mac and cheese was the best side, very cheesy and al dente noodles. I was not a fan of the collard greens as I like my greens to be slow cooked, tender and soft. The stems of the greens were hard and you can tell they were cooked quickly. Overall, I understand everyone has off days and based on the reviews, they are typically good. But I believe maybe there were some issues with staffing as to why they opened later and took so long for our orders to be prepared. When I return to Savannah, I would give them another go around to try out another meal, especially since the ambience inside was a cute vibe. read more

Hidden GEM in Savannah that is located outside the tourist district. It's small and cozy, decorated with inspirational quotes inside and out, adorned with plants bring life to the dining area. The BEEF POT ROAST AND GRAVY was so good on my first visit, I wasn't sure I could order anything else. However I built up courage to try the SMOTHERED ROSEMARY PORKCHOPS. OMG...my new favorite. Super tender, moist and covered in a savory gravy. You select two sides. I love the CORN BREAD and BAKED MAC N CHEESE. I haven't tried any other sides yet. Corn bread is fluffy and buttery with touch of sweetness, while not being sweet. Baked mac n cheese is just pure goodness. This is delcicious down home cooking. It is comfort food. Very nice people. My Honey and I had dinner about 7pm. They close at 8pm. You order at a plexi-glass window. We had two people aged of us and it took a while for her to take our order. I orders were pot roast, green beans and mac&cheese, fried chicken collards and mac&cheese. The fried chicken is cooked to order. We ate at the reaturant. Seating is limited. We were challenged by the neighborhood beggars inside and outside. The food was okay nothing to rave about. The best part was the Mac& cheese. The collards taste out the can with no seasoning and the pot roast had no flavor. I first had scraps of the pot roast but asked for more meat and I was willing to pay. Meals were served in carry-out container and we used plastic utensils. The total was about $48.00. This meal was not worth that much especially being served with plastic items. The food here is amazing!! We had lunch during our visit. The fried shrimp was hand breaded and so fresh and crunchy. I had the turkey wing with collard greens and mac and cheese. Everything was clearly made with care and love! Rachel was so sweet and welcoming. The cakes and banana pudding looked so good but we were stuffed. We will be back on our next visit to Savannah. We were in Savannah & decided to leave the tourist strip to find some real soul food. What a great choice Simple Soul was! We live in Kentucky, the land of "Fried Chicken". Of course we had to try the fried chicken! This was easily in the top 5 best fried chicken we've ever had. The owner was working her butt off the whole time we were there. She was running everything -- the register, cooking, clean up, etc. She had to be stressed to the max, but she was extremely sweet & worked without complaining about handling every single thing.
