I just popped into this coffee shop for the first time and I have to say I was pretty disappointed. Perhaps it's my fault for visiting this coffee shop on a Saturday afternoon. This place is claustrophobic small. Not to mention the baristas seem very apathetic and apparently very limited knowledge of their products. I asked if a particular pastry had any nuts and nobody could answer. So I asked about another pastry and again nobody could answer my question to tell me if the pastry in question had any nuts. I was very disappointed as this place supposedly has great pastries and I was looking forward to trying them. I left with my latte and could not get outside fast enough in order to breathe. Please note I'm actually not claustrophobic. This is just how small and packed this place is was when I went, even though Google said the place was less busy than usual. I would hate to see what this place looks like when it's busy. Would I ever come here again? Maybe but definitely during a different time. And I would hope that there would be some different staff members working, perhaps some that have better attitudes and have some knowledge of the products that the coffee shop sells. This is one of "the" spots a lot of native Houstonians know of. For 10:00pm on a Thursday night this place was packed! I think it's the mix of convenience that it's open late and the place got 2 full stories of seating area. Be careful if you're going upstairs, the stairway is like really steep. Since it was late at night I just got a cookie, and it was pretty good. They got plenty of drinks other than coffee available so that's cool. It was loud, there was music playing, so my friend ordered and she said a mocha latte and when it was time to get her order they gave her a matcha latte. There was a bit of a back and forth of the barista saying "that's not what you said earlier" and my friend going "I know what I said" so that situation could have been handled a little bit better on the barista's end. One downfall of this place is that since it is in Montrose the parking is a little difficult. Since it is a popular place there's hardly ever parking available. And at night if I have to walk down the street for too long I don't feel very safe. I felt like I was tripping over people when it was time to leave. To say the place was packed was an understatement. So if you're looking for a quiet place to study this might not be it for you. read more

THIS IS NOT A WELCOMING PLACE. ESPECIALLY FOR PEOPLE OF COLOR. This literally happened 30 min ago. My friend and I had been studying since about 9:30 pm at Agora and we were just vibing. I mentioned to my friend that I wanted to get some Matcha but when I looked over the railing, the line was super long (literally snaking through the room) so I just said ok well I'll buy it later and then continue my work. My friend goes downstairs to purchase a drink and a snack and and while she was there she finds a spot, so she goes and sits in it until I get downstairs (we were in these tiny uncomfy chairs upstairs). She then goes back upstairs to get her stuff and sits down so we can set up our study area again. Not even 5 minutes pass and this Russian (I think?) man with an accent comes up to us and loudly and aggressively tell us that we need to buy a drink because our spot is for paying customers only and we had been in that spot 30 minutes (we had not). We were shocked at his aggression and just kind of looked at each other confused but like shrugged it off cause we knew that was the rule and we were gonna get drinks anyway. So we finish setting up our belongings, and I kid yall not, 30 seconds later he is back in our faces and tells us loudly and aggressively that we need to get up and leave because we didn't buy anything (as if we had time to do so?). My friend tells him "hey we know, I'm pregnant and my back is hurting and there was a line" and he says I don't care get in the line. Obviously we are not giving money to a business like that (and neither should yall) so we close our laptops and pack up and leave. On my way out I hear him talking to some men outside about us, saying we wouldn't pay but we're sitting, so I shout to him "that's not a good way to keep business" and he tells me "bye". I honestly would have stayed and gone off on him but my friend was walking away crying so I followed her. I hope he's proud of himself. Now I see where all those wrinkles on his face come from: he's miserable. I have also come to realize that he likely approached us because I am a black woman and I have seen the other reviews from people of color with similar experiences. My friend is white passing. DO NOT COME HERE. Instead, my recommendations are Brass Tacks, Common Bond, Black Walnut or Katz (open 24 hrs). Parking can be a hit or miss. The vibes here are homey and cozy. They have a lot of places you can sit to study or just relax. The frozen mocha is really good and I love their brownies. They prepare your drink as soon as you order it so there's not much of a wait time. Prices are reasonable too. read more

Stumbled on this place, trying to find a warm drink on a freezing day. This south Floridian definitely needed a respite, and Agora was just what I needed. Looks like such a warm home environment when you walk in. So welcoming and the smells of deliciousness waft to you immediately. What a gem of a coffee shop, with a Greek theme, 2-floors of seating that were packed when we visited on a Saturday afternoon, warm lighting and cute wooden tables and chairs strewn around the cafe. There is outdoor seating too! The parking lot only fits about 8-10 cars but we found street parking just a block away. The menu is extensive from Vietnamese iced coffee to salted pistachio lattes. There are 2 levels with tons of little tables all over for folks to sit down and work, and also a bar seating option. It was pretty full when I stopped by, but I grabbed a seat at the bar and then snagged a table about 40 min after I got there. I saw lots of other people working on their laptops etc. The place has a very old cozy cafe vibe with wood tables and chairs and it's much more warm feeling than a lot of the industrial style coffee shops in Houston. I can see why they have so many patrons! I was wearing a headscarf, and it quickly became clear his behavior was aggressive and targeted. He kept coming back, getting louder and nastier each time, until he actually shouted at us to "get the f*** out." I've never been treated so disrespectfully in a public place. I went to this place today to meet a first date when I got there I went inside and tried to order a Vietnamese coffee the atmosphere was cold I think I was the only African-American person in the place. I went up to the counter, and the two young ladies behind the counter were of mixed race. One was I think Latino mixed the other was African-American mix. They never acknowledged me at all they just kept working, and I understand that they were busy. I stepped away from the counter because they called orders for other people and those folks came up and grabbed their drinks what upset me was two white people came up and they took their orders right away, still never acknowledging me now I am an older gentleman and I grew up during the time when we fought for restaurant equality, so this kind of took me back. When I finally got her attention, I asked her (one girl), "Hey, are you going to take my order?" The young lady said "yeah but you stepped away from the counter. Great vibe in this place for sure! I enjoyed the Earl grey tea paired with warm banana bread. Most people here are either on their laptops or having tea with friends. I did see a few people doing neither, just kind of lounging around upstairs alone while looking around constantly. The seating can get pretty hectic so we ended up waiting a second for a table to become available upstairs. I came in around 9pm and I was so surprised to see how packed it was.
