Agora is such a staple coffee shop in Houston. None others have quite the same dark wood ambiance that feels breathable and visible. I love the upper level deck and snagging a cute table overlooking a window. It's definitely a 'one size fits all' that is great for morning work/studying, light afternoon catch up, or a cozy late night vibe. Traditionally, I've seen a lot of people studying during the week while a bit more of a lively feel on weekend evenings. People are very polite but do follow the courtesy of waiting to find a table until after they order, since it can get a little busy. Overall, they are quick with coffee orders with a variety of pastries. Parking is difficult (but it is Montrose!), so anticipate adding a little time to your drive to find a spot. Honest review? Feels like a forced vibe environment. Seems chill but it's far from it. There's so much to complain about but the previous reviews + what people say on socials aren't not lying. Since coming to Houston, everybody has mentioned this coffee shop. And finally, I got to learn what all the hype is about. When you first enter the cafe, it's a very cute location - located on the main strip of Westheimer Road. There's an outdoor area on the porch with wooden benches and tables. And when the weather is nice, you can sit outside and enjoy coffee underneath the Houston warmth. On the inside, there is very seating around couches, tables, and also an upstairs. On the upstairs area, there is a trellis with a balcony that faces downstairs and tables that line the edges of the second floor. It's a very nice vibe and a lot of people seem to go for work! There seem to be outlets against the walls. They have decorations aligning the walls of the cafe and it's very eclectic with a lot of literature and older themes. I would say it seems like a very cute place to go for a coffee date. And, it is also open at night. My only complaint is that it is way too overhyped, it's impossible to find seating. I can see this place getting regulars and it has a cottage vibe. But, good luck if you come at the right time, you most definitely will not find seating. Be extra careful also with the stairs, they are very steep with limited railing, I can see it being very easy to fall down them. Coffee itself, it's also very generic. When it comes to coffee shops in Houston, Agora is one of the OG's. They've been around for quite awhile and has stayed popular and busy. I've been here quite a few times over the years and there hasn't been a time where this place wasn't busy. Like most places in the area, parking is a little tough. There's a tiny lot that is almost always filled, but you can also find street parking. The building is old and the space inside is tight. They have seating all around including space upstairs looking down at the first floor. I've always had a pleasant encounter with the staff and they are always helpful if you are undecided on what to get. Their coffee options are pretty straight forward but they always have seasonal and specialty coffees listed separately. I usually go with a hot coffee here and they serve it up in big coffee mugs on a saucer with a little cookie to go with it. I love those little details. A vanilla latte is one of my go to drinks here and they do it just right. It's not overly sweet which is just how I like my coffee. They also have a beer on tap as well as bottles of wine. They also have a variety of pastries if you're hungry. One of my favorite things to get here is the peanut butter cookie coated in chocolate. Get it and thank me later. Cute place to grab a chai latte after meeting friends for brunch. The good. Easy to walk across the street from Barcelona. I already had parked. Otherwise parking might/would have been a challenge. The chai was hot and not too sweet. The green cup and saucer were so retro. The place is so cute and cozy. The not so good. The line was so long. It was midway to the entrance when our party of four entered. By the time we got our drinks, the line was out the door. No real place to sit. We were lucky to get a place with four seats at the counter as someone left as we were getting our lattes. My friends actually ordered their coffees to go because they didn't think that we would find a seat. Prices are high for what you get. Everything is an add on. Milk choice. Addition fee. Agora is such a cute coffee house filled with plants and Greek decor. I've passed by the outside a few times to dine at other places, but this was my first coffee experience here. The line was about midway up from the entrance when our group walked in after brunch. It moved a little slow. The line was to the entrance door when we all got our drinks and luckily found some bar seats near the register. Both floors were occupied by groups or people on their laptops. You have to excuse yourself through the narrow spaces since it was busy. There's a steep staircase to the second floor, and a single men and women restroom is on the first floor near the stairs. The drinks came out quickly, and the coffee was hot enough to drink without burning your tongue. I think it's overpriced when you add a syrup, espresso shot or milk alternative. I ordered a latte for $5.50 and added vanilla for $1 and oat milk for $1.25. Without tip yet, it was $8.34 with tax. Yes, some coffee shops also charge, but some don't, and it's just as good. The coffee was ok. I think there was a little too much vanilla syrup. There were pastries for sale, but we just had brunch, so we didn't try them. It was nice to see what this place was all about. I would maybe go back, but I wouldn't go out of my way. Common Bond is next door, and there's an abundance of coffee shops in the area where I live. read more

I've heard Agora is a go-to study spot for Rice students as they stay open late. They really try to maximize their seating as the tables and chairs are very close together, especially on the second floor. I had an iced matcha latte, which was very basic and tasted like one you would make at home with some powder and milk. They charge extra for milk substitutions. I was glad they had self-serve sweetener packets available, although I wish there were some menu option to have the drink made sweeter. They also sell an assortment of pastries. There is a small parking lot that filled up shortly after they opened in the morning. You can find free street parking and walk a ways otherwise. The women's bathroom was strange in the sense that you walk in, and there's only one stall, with a sink outside the stall, so there was a long line of people waiting inside the bathroom for the one stall. Loved all the art on the walls and the dark decor. I got the lemon bread, pumpkin chai and a pumpkin bread to go! All were absolutely delicious. The bread was moist and not overpoweringly lemon. The pumpkin chai was amazing, again not overpowering on the flavor side but a perfect balance of the sweet pumpkin and spicy chai. I have heard and seen so much about this place on social media that I wanted to see for myself how good this place was. The place itself is nice, lot of places to sit and plenty of outside seating as well. The decoration and style is very appealing and I loved it. The employees however brought me back to reality as they looked like they were not having a good time that day. I tried an iced chai and also an espresso. The espresso was straight forward, just a regular espresso. The chai however had no personality, my sister tried it and was also not a huge fan. We also tried a chocolate croissant that was decent. Not good, not bad just decent. When asked if they could warm it up they said that they couldn't it but there was a microwave we could use, so if you like your stuff warmed up just a heads up on that. Overall if I'm ever in the area I would probably stop by, but I wouldn't go out of my way. Constrained by the small street blocks on Westheimer, Agora isn't the most spacious place to gather but it carries some unique features. It offers a wooden, cabin-like atmosphere with plenty of sunlight entry during the day. Greek-themed decorations cover the entirety of the walls while jazz plays at a comfortable level. Despite this small establishment carrying 40+ customers at at time, it's relatively peaceful. The WiFi is also impressively fast for the amount of customers using it -- I tested 220 Mbps up and 260 down. In many ways, the atmosphere resembles a home rather than a business. You will often find the first and second floors packed with customers up until its closing at 2am, an observation that most coffee shops cannot boast. However, the cozy atmosphere that gravitates customers in is the same reason for its unideal seating conditions. There are only two large tables near the entrance that can fit 4 people. Most of the seating can only accommodate single customers comfortably and even then, the chances of finding any sort of table available is low to begin with. Any time I'm here, I see a couple others performing the same ritual I do: realizing that the first floor is completely occupied, carefully climbing up the **steep** stairs to the second floor, and coming to the same realization again before letting out a sigh and asking a stranger to share one of the uncomfortably low tables (usually the only tables that are open). Their $4 chocolate baklava is decent. Personally, I'm not sure if chocolate is the best sweetener to add on to baklava, but it certainly made for an interesting experience compared to its traditional flavor. I appreciate Agora's decorations and adaptations to the limited space they have. I come here for the occasional solo work session whenever I'm nearby and it's getting late, but their seating arrangements really miss the mark on group customers. My niece recommended Agora as one of two coffee shops in the neighborhood while we were nearby to visit the Menil. The building and atmosphere are nice. The service came with attitude as the young man and woman behind the counter were deep in their own little drama. The chocolate brownie ($8!) was pretty good and the lattes were okay. It's rare in the 2020s to pay $1.25 extra for oat milk substitute, and I'm not convinced they did the substitute ... it seems to me the lattes were done with regular frothed milk. Used to thoroughly enjoy coming here until a disturbing interaction I had with one employee the other day. I was buying a coke and a cookie for a homeless man, and he happened to follow me inside because I wanted him to pick out his own cookie. The employee proceeded to say "sir you can't be in here" so I said he's with me, I'm getting him a snack..? Mind you in front of a busy line and she was talking at a normal volume, not even trying to be discreet. She then proceeds to say to me "you don't have to buy him that if you don't want to" ?? To which I respond, "I offered to buy him this he didn't ask for it." Then she says it's against policy for me to buy him something... so I said okay it's for me then, so I could still buy it and give it to him. Pretty hypocritical of a shop called "Agora" which translates to "gathering and public space." Guess not ALL of the public is allowed in this public space. Totally disappointed in how the employee handled it. Completely embarrassed the homeless man and tangibly made me and other customers uncomfortable. The whole situation was prolonged by her commentary, when me and the man could have just got what we wanted, paid for it, and left, both with fuller stomachs. Agora, right next to Common Bond, is a two story coffee shop with a homey ambiance. The ambiance is definitely one of the coolest aspects of this restaurant, it's pretty dark inside and there is a lofted seating area. They serve fairly traditional coffee drinks that are less sweet than CB's offerings. Agora also offers various pastries and alcohol as well. I would definitely stop in here to study in the loft, but since my taste in coffee skews more sweet, I'd probably rather spend my money at CB. That said, my latte from agora was exceptionally foamy and one of the most high quality coffee drinks I've had in a while. Parking is quite limited and I was forced to park at a nearby lot and walk over. I'd recommend coming here only if you've already secured another good parking spot in the area. read more

I was torn between a 3 or 4 star because I really liked the ambiance and decor when I walked in but I got a croissant and was not impressed. I asked if it could be warmed up and was told there was a microwave I could use. I ordered the mocha latte and bonus points because it was pretty hot but the taste was fine, like any other mocha I've had. They have a small parking lot and there's also street parking available. I just popped into this coffee shop for the first time and I have to say I was pretty disappointed. Perhaps it's my fault for visiting this coffee shop on a Saturday afternoon. This place is claustrophobic small. Not to mention the baristas seem very apathetic and apparently very limited knowledge of their products. I asked if a particular pastry had any nuts and nobody could answer. So I asked about another pastry and again nobody could answer my question to tell me if the pastry in question had any nuts. I was very disappointed as this place supposedly has great pastries and I was looking forward to trying them. I left with my latte and could not get outside fast enough in order to breathe. Please note I'm actually not claustrophobic. This is just how small and packed this place is was when I went, even though Google said the place was less busy than usual. I would hate to see what this place looks like when it's busy. Would I ever come here again? Maybe but definitely during a different time. And I would hope that there would be some different staff members working, perhaps some that have better attitudes and have some knowledge of the products that the coffee shop sells.
