In my opinion, one of the important reasons Vinology is still here and also successful has to do with the fact that thinking outside the box and literally going the extra mile for a customer is valued. I experienced this side of the business during the early phase of the Covid pandemic back in 2020. At the time, during lockdown, going to a wine bar or wine shop just wasn't top of mind. However, I had researched a Cabernet Franc (red wine) called Nicolas Reau Enlèvement Demandé Anjou [Vintage year: 2017]. Reau is kind of a rebel working in the Loire Valley of France who is interested in producing organic, biodynamic wines that are essentially closer to nature and processed differently--more artisanal, so to speak. I read about this wine and wanted to find a bottle locally, which wasn't an easy task as I recall. This is where Vinology comes in. I'm not much of a wine drinker, but had to have a bottle of this excellent wine. Like many people, I preferred to stay indoors during the early part of the pandemic and was kind of nervous about going out. When I called Vinology, I expressed my dilemma, and the guy on the other end of the phone came up with a great solution. He offered to deliver the bottle of wine I purchased to my address. I actually met him at the edge of the garage entrance to where I live. This was great, exceptional above and beyond service. I will always treasure and remember Vinology and plan to support the business more in the future. Hats off to the folks who own and run this wine establishment. read more

I would usually say yes please come check this place out they have a great selection of wine and friendly people who work there. NOPE def things have gone down hill. We walked in and you think my we were burden than a willing paying customer. We said we would love to buy some wine to take home but would also love to enjoy some wine while we were there along with a cheese and meat tray which is on their menu in the business and on the website. The employee said "Ah well I can sell you some wine but we don't have any cheese that is cut up already so no we can serve you a a cheese and meat tray. We said oh you don't have cheese and meat that's ok thanks and he said no it's just not cut up and I'm not cutting it up. He said there is a food menu next door you can order from and then bring it in here and enjoy your wine then. We looked over it was people selling food from the back of a van. I don't know what happened but I would not recommend this place the staff is unfriendly, not welcoming, and make you feel like you don't belong there (you are putting them out) I never complain about places but honestly I was so upset about today's experience I couldn't help myself but alarm the owner (by making this comment) because if you knew making a cheese and meat tray was an inconvenience or an annoyance to your employees then maybe you should take it off the menu. Not once has that ever happened. We have been there one time when you were out of most of the cheese and some meat and you still was able to make some type of plate to snack on. Thank goodness for the under the volcano across the street they are amazing, delicious, welcoming, and happy to serve you!! Please visit under the volcano and skip this place. I visited this place looking for a nice glass of wine after a long week at work. I requested a wine similar to Cakebread, but since they didn't have it, I was served a glass that cost $30. I certainly didn't expect that, and it would have been helpful to be informed about the price beforehand. At the very least, I would have appreciated being shown the menu. Overall, the atmosphere was not one that was very friendly. No plans to return. read more

Unique as it is a wine bar, tasting room and retail wine store. Very nice bar area and large tables good for groups. They focus on select wine from most regions but heavy on France, Italy and USA. Also have some select beer. By select I mean the GM tastes and selects. The GM is very knowledgeable about wine, particularly Italian wines. They have a turntable and play albums which is cool and you don't see everyday. On our visit, enjoyed a tasting of Champs and white and rose that was very nice. Chill spot. Will be back. read more

This place has a great, clean vibe. The staff are incredibly friendly and helpful. Our group was next door at Baileson, and some of our party decided we wanted wine instead of beer. These two businesses coalesce a lot, and it is common practice to bring a glass of wine back next door to sit out at the picnic tables with friends at Baileson. I like this concept! I have drove past this place and always wanted to stop in. On a Saturday of retail therapy and self care I decided to stop here to check it out. We tasted 4 wines all which were great and off the beaten path and something you would not find at any grocery. They have a full glass of wine for 12 and 1/2 glass of wine for 6. I had 1.5 glasses and bought one of the bottles I tasted for only $21.00 to take home. Vinology is my favorite wine tasting place and it never disappoints! There are several flights to pick from, which change every week, or you can have a custom flight (usually 3 wines, half a glass each). Every staff member is incredibly knowledgeable and will tell you so much about every wine you're tasting. They're very education-based, so even if you know nothing about wine, they can teach you and help you find something you like! Prices for bottles are also very competitive, so this is a great place to pick something up. read more

I was a big fan of this place! While at Baileson Brewing Company next door, I spotted so many people trekking over from Vinology with wine glasses. Since none of the beers at Baileson were appealing to me, my friend and I decided to check out Vinology. They have the option of half or full glasses of wine, and YES you can walk with a glass to the brewery next door, they just ask that you bring the glass back when you're done. I tried a slightly sweet rose and definitely enjoyed it. I saw some unfamiliar wines there, so it looked like they have a nice variety. If you're more of a wine drinker, or don't want the IPAs at Baileson, definitely check out Vinology! They put out cubes of cheese and bread and olive oil too, which I wished I'd tried, but there's always next time, because I'm really looking forward to coming back here!! read more

Vinology is fantastic. They are SO helpful. I know hardly anything about wine but have made it my mission to learn more and this has turned out to be the perfect place. Not at all pretentious and just happy to answer even my dumbest questions about wine. I ordered a flight tonight and everyone was very knowledgeable and able to tell me so much about each wine. This is a great place for newbies like me but also a perfect match for connoisseurs who walk in knowing exactly what they want and desire a broad selection. I will for sure be back! Okay people, bookmark this place. Go on do it, add it to your list because this is a must. I was so sad that I learned that this place just had existed! The wine here is amazing, you can do one of their tastings listed on the board ($20-30) or create your own tasting. A tasting pour is roughly around $6. Our wine server/educator was very helpful in our endless requests, one had a palette for malbecs and dark reds, and the other a palette for sweet white wines. We love sampling and trying a glorious amount of wine and finally decided on a bottle ($30). I thouroughly enjoyed my tasting of the German reds. Note to self: they change their tastings weekly so make sure to head back here. Also they offer a tiny self serve eats: bread, cheese, olives and almonds which was super helpful after all the tastings. Did I mention it was free!? So my wife and I have a disagreement about the purpose of a wine bar. Both views are valid. My wife thinks that a wine bar is a place to relax on poofy chairs, or at least comfortable ones. It's quiet, and dark. The wine is good, but more important, you're left alone to talk. Food is crucial. I like wine bars to try strange wines at reasonable prices. I don't care about poofy chairs or the food. I just need bread and cheese. What I want is a guy who'll talk to you and offer interesting stuff to try. Vinology is A+ in my conception, but doesn't rate in my wife's. It's bright, counter-seating, no food. OTOH, the people behind the bar have a wide selection of interesting stuff that they know a lot about. Take it for what it is. read more

We're leaving Houston in a bit and Vinology is a gem we are going to dearly miss. No matter your level of knowledge, or peculiarity of tastes, the staff here can guide you towards something you'll adore. I just ask one thing, don't be the guy that's says there's no good wine from X and then proceeds to talk over the staff when they try and share options that would disprove that. Crazy idea, right, listening to experts! The pairings they have up on the wall are a good starting point, but they're always willing to customize. I usually ask for whatever the weirdest wines they're pouring are and have gotten to try some really interesting ones that way. Heck, once we went in and asked for some interesting whites that a person who only drinks red might like and two out of three were a hit. Sure, I wouldn't mind if they had some snack options. But I would rather they focus on what they do exceptionally well than try and figure out how to run a kitchen in their limited space. Not only did we get three glasses of wine, but we also got an education--the guy helping us walked us through the master sommelier process, the different flavors of wine, the region, etc. A fun experience! Riccardo, recommended a good Walla Walla Syrah that we drank in the store. He was very nice and the service was good. I don't agree with the 20% corkage fee if you drink on premises, because the attendant, rent, electricity, etc. are fairly fixed because of the retail side so the 20% is a penalty. If the corkage fee went to the server to replace the service fee then I'd be ok with it, but it doesn't. When I then added a tip on the one bottle, it was over priced which then I felt bad about it. I'm not sure what the business model is because the wine prices seem as expensive as Cammerata and 13 Celcius but the atmosphere isn't there. There didn't seem to be any reasonably priced flights in the $15 range. Personally, I have a hard time spending $25 for a flight of wine. read more

I wish we had something like this in Austin! This place was so fun to visit during our recent short trip to Houston. We walked in thinking it was just a wine store, and it was a bar and a store! The decor is bright and welcoming as well! But you can taste wines and do flights as well. The staff was knowledgable about wine and even told us the story of the wine we were buying. We stopped in on a quiet Wednesday, shortly after the store opened. Sommelier Ricardo gave us the 'lay of the land,' and left us alone to explore but remained close enough at hand to answer questions--and we had a lot. We are relative newcomers to the world of wine and Ricardo let us take the lead in finding out what we needed to know without overwhelming us. We opted for a flight and he described each one, explaining the differences as we asked. The flights change weekly, and are a perfect way to learn wine in an environment which encourages learning. Fantastic experience and we will most definitely be back next week to check out the new flights. We are also bringing home a bottle from the flight to enjoy.
