My girls and I before the great tasting of wine and some good food!

Went here for my birthday and had a wonderful time! Very relaxing, classy place. Food was good and ofc wine was 10/10. Overall experience was great

My husband flew me out to Houston to celebrate my 45th birthday. He was excited to bring me to the Roots wine bar as he knows I love a good wine. I really enjoyed the set up and ambiance of this establishment! Tons of wine options to choose from-- all were delicious at a great price! We visited on a cooler night so we opted to dine indoors. Overall it was a great experience and we really enjoyed ourselves.

Went on a wine bus tour with my group HTX Honeys last weekend and Roots was one of our stops. It is such a neat place and concept. You give them your debit/credit card upon entry and they give you a white card that keeps track of all your pours from the over 50 bottles they have on tap. This is a very economical way to try new wines before you buy them. With a one oz pour starting at as little as $1.50. So looking forward to hosting our HTX Honeys holiday party here in a couple weeks! Mr.Gary, the owners husband was very accommodating and helped me set my party up.

Stumbled upon this interesting, small and quaint wine bar Love the concept of self-serve wine! Sooo many varieties of wine on tap! The food was delish! Service easy great!

Love this concept of pour your own! This is sucks beautiful intimate setting that remains casual enough to hang out with friends. They have a good menu as well, and a wide category of wine available. There are options to purchase bottle of things you liked. Very cute. Roots will be worked into my wine bar rotation

A bit in the middle of nowhere / residential area but such a cute wine tasting spot! The inside is nicely decorated but we sat outside since we had our dogs with us. It's a fun concept where you get a card and choose wines as you go along. They have a nice selection of whites, red, roses and even some orange from all over the country and internationally as well. You insert your card, select the wine pour size and then hit the button to pour the wine into a glass. The prices are varied depending on type of wine and the size of pour. Really great choose your own adventure in a relaxed environment. The store employee was also super helpful in explaining things

Been to this place once before around 2021, and I will say I still enjoy the experience of self pour wine with a wide variety of options. Ambiance was quiet. Staff were friendly. I tried the seasonal crawfish pasta which I didn't enjoy so much. Too salty and not enough flavor. It had so much potential to be better, and to be honest this was the main reason I came on this visit. Otherwise I had the Brussel sprouts which were good. I'd still come back.

If I'm thinking about wine, I'm thinking about Roots. They're not just one of my favorite places to imbibe, but also one of my preferred places to grab a bite. They have plenty of indoor and outdoor seating, immense selection for wine-os and a stellar food program. Whether it's a self-dine, date night, or group affair, I find that there's always a good reason to come here. It has become one of the best establishments in EaDo. It all starts with a charge card. Folks can load up cards at the front and insert them along the wall of wine for small / medium / large pours of regional wines. I am probably wrong, but I still have yet to find a place in the Houston area that does this. (#1) There is no pressure to buy bottles here, just sip away at your heart's content by trying everything from Willamette to Napa, from France to South Africa. Their open seating means this is one of the most group friendly places in the city. They have a ton of outdoor space with the tables and chairs to boot, along with a simple, yet industrial interior with AC (#2). There is also a private room area that is practically sound proof and has its own unique dining table complete with its own soundtrack. It's a cool departure from the rest of the establishment. No one talks about the food enough. Their plates are mainly tapas style, but there are some stellar selections if one plays their cards right. Their phyllo shrimp is strangely addicting and burrata is well executed. The juicy lucy burger seems like a standard entré but I was surprised at how juicy the burger actually was. The crab mac and cheese is always going to be a hit, even if the portion is conservative for such an indulgent dish. Many folks will order the cheeseboard since this is a wine spot after all, but I would recommend the calamari for an added savory option. I think what really sets them apart is the service. Garrett is constantly busting his butt to make sure folks are happy and is seen practically everywhere from the kitchen to the front patio. Eric is the man in the kitchen, who definitely knows how to whip up a mean dish. The irony of a place that offers self-serve wine offering top notch customer service is not lost on me. Parking is all street and I've not had issues finding it. This is a (almost too) quiet part of town, but I'd certainly want a place like Roots in my neighborhood. ___________ (#1) And if they do, I doubt it's nearly as well. (#2) Thank you, AC gods.

I've been to Roots twice and both times have been great. The first was for a Yelp Elite Event so coming back the second time, I was curious to see how my experience would compare. The self serve wine taps are really cool. It's easy to get carried away sampling all the different wines. Wines can be dispensed in 1, 3, or 5 ounce pours. According to the website the wine offerings change weekly. They also have cider and beer. It's really cool that they feature wines from Texas wineries as well as women owned/operated wineries. On my first visit, I tried Mead for the first time and ended up buying a bottle of it because I really enjoyed it. The second visit, I ended up having two glasses of a Picpoul Blanc. I wanted a bottle but it was a bit pricey. They have so many wine options for every palate. The staff is more than willing to help or provide suggestions if you don't know where to begin. We ordered food from the happy hour menu: Patatas Bravas - These were really good! I liked the seasoning and the sauce that came with it. Wagyu Beef Tartare - Absolutely amazing! I was able to tolerate the texture since it came with crispy chips. The flavors were so good! I've only had beef tartare twice, but this was definitely my favorite one that I've tried so far. Salmon Ceviche - The texture was a bit too chewy for me, however the flavors were really good! Calamari - I don't like calamari so I didn't have any, but the presentation was nice. Everyone in the group who did eat it really enjoyed it. I love the neighborhood feel of Roots. They have a small patio out front and to the side of the restaurant. Parking is on the street in front of the building and on the side streets in the neighborhood. If you buy a bottle of wine, you get a 20% discount. You can also sign up for their wine club for additional perks and discounts. This is a great spot for wine lovers or those who want to try a variety of wines!

If you are somebody that is expecting good wine this is not the place for you. This place is basically set up so you can serve your own wine and there are different sizes to the amount of wine that you get. I think the concept is very good, however, I believe the wine quality needs to be better. It is still in the underdeveloped area of downtown that I'm sure will explode in the next few years. This place has potential but not right now. The patatas bravas were amazing.

    Kennedy W.

I like wine but I'm not a connoisseur. I came for date night and like being able to try a selection of wines that I wouldn't normally get. You pay by the glass. Cost varies by type of wine and number of ounces. I used it as a wine tasting experience, having mostly only purchased at the 3oz price point. My date and I only racked up $25 in drinks between the two of us so I'd say it was a pretty good experience. I didn't try any food but that was available to order. We came on a Sunday so there was enough parking but I'd hate to imagine what parking looks like at peak hours. Staff was friendly and restaurant was clean. Overall I enjoyed it and would return.

Uhhhh I have to say the reviews deceived me about Roots :/. Maybe it was who I came with but I was not wowed at all. We got there around 8pm on a Tuesday evening and it was one other party in there. When you check in, you have to give your credit card and you receive a card that allows you to purchase glasses of wine. They have different pours at different prizes and an assortment ranging from red to white to select from. The red I tried was decent but I didn't care too much for it. I ordered the potato bravas and salmon cheviche, and both were decent as well. I'll give this spot another try but with better company. At least there's street parking so that's one less hassle.

I absolutely loved and enjoyed my time here! I literally almost spent 5 hours at the place because the vibes are immaculate and the foods were delicious. Shout out to the manager for her great service and all of the staff for being so kind and friendly. Also thanks for Gary for all of his help!

You can choose between 3 or 6oz pours, or a bottle. We also decided to share a cheese board with the Willoughby cheese which was soft and delicious! Items we tried: Pane - delicious Roasted Carrot Pizza - AMAZING, A little spicy, but definitely something we would order again. Pastas we ordered initially came out cold - our incredible waiter immediately corrected the issue. But from a flavor profile - Pansotti - sooooo delicious. You'd never guess that it was a vegetarian option - the mushrooms were so meaty. The delicate pouches with the spinach and ricotta were heavenly. Pappardelle - The lamb braised sauce had a depth of flavor that could rival any restaurant in Italy. My only tiny hope was that the pasta would have been served aldente, it was a little overcooked. But to each his own. Overall - really great. Would recommend. This would be great for a weeknight dinner or an off the beaten path date night.

Is this the most overrated restaurant in Houston?…read more After being on my "To Try" list for an unacceptable amount of time, I finally made my way over to Nancy's Hustle. I was lucky enough to snag a seat at the bar with no reservation. I arrived about 30 minutes into open and there was already a wait list. I suggest getting there early or making a reservation if you're not a solo diner. The interior is nice and intimate, with low lighting that doesn't work well for photos but definitely for a cozy dinner. The set up and music reminded me a little bit of 93 Til due to the decor. I started with the duck dumplings and the Nancy cakes. I wasn't expecting it but they offer half orders which is great for a solo diner who wants to try multiple things. Both items were delicious. The dumplings had a nice savory sauce with some texture from the peanuts. These were great but probably my bottom of the list which is saying something. I would only say this because they reminded me a lot of the hot oil wontons from duck and bao so at that price point, you might as well get more. The Nancy cakes were pillowy and savory and made a great vessel for honey butter and roe. I even used a bit to dunk into the leftover dumpling sauce. I suggest eating these as soon as they hit your table. I was trying to savor my bites but the cakes benefit a lot from being nice and hot. It's not the most ground breaking dish in the world but it's done well and I would definitely call it a must order. I could have eating a full order of it alone. My main dishes is where my mind was blown. I went with the roast chicken and half order of the gem lettuce salad and fries. This might be the best roast chicken I've ever had in Houston. Chicken can be a hit or a miss because sometimes, there just isn't much flavor. This was absolutely not the case here. The chicken was juicy and seasoned to the core. It even heated up well as left overs without being dry. The chili sauce on the bottom was flavor intensified and as I swiped my chicken through the pools of sauce, I thought to myself "overrated where?!". The gem salad caught me by surprise. I'm not one to stay away from a salad at a restaurant because they typically do them better than you can make at home . Nancy's Hustle solidified this opinion. The salad was wonderfully briney and savory. The lettuce was crisp and covered in the herby shallot dressing that grabbed my taste buds. Topped with anchovies and pancetta for a nice salty touch. So so good. The fries were the perfect side, crisp and not too potatoey (yes this is a thing). I traded in the aoli for some ketchup because that's just my thing. I concluded this wonderful dining experience with a dessert. Buttermilk ice cream with cornflakes, black berries and honey butter cookie. This dessert was a lesson in balance. Every component was present , sweet, salty, crunchy, cool. Each bite had something new to offer and combined into a perfectly executed dessert. As a cocktail, I tried their tropical drink. I don't remember what it was called but I know I could have drank about 7 of those. This was a great dining experience. I think when things get popular, sometimes we feel the need to be contrarians with our experiences. That wasn't the case for me. Nancy's Hustle has earned its popularity and I'll definitely be back

First, we got there pretty early for our reservation. We sat almost immediately upon check in. Our waiter was in training but did a really good job. Ordered a whiskey sour. Was seated at the bar so I got to watch it be made. The bartender- man that guy never stopped. He was organized and just did his thing. So many pretty drinks were made while I was there watching. The pink one, whatever it was, was really pretty! On to the food. We got two apps, two meals, and two desserts. Husband ordered the Brussels, Steak Frites, and the Devil's Affogato. I got the Bacon covered Dates, the Pizza, and the Sticky Toffee Cake. The Brussels were good - husband liked them more than me. They were good. Had cashews in them. Little spicy. The bacon covered dates. Think this was my favorite bite. Sweet, salty, creamy. Came we three & I had two. The pizza was sweet and salty as well. The crust was so good and fresh. The arugula set it off so well. Def a buy again! The Steak Frites was so good. The chimichurri sauce was perfect. Just the right mount of citrus. Steak was tender and the fries seasoned well. The desserts - don't skip them! The Devils Affogato we had the first time we ate at Sixty Vines. Had to have it again. If you like coffee, chocolate and vanilla ice cream just get it. Unfortunately, just like my first visit, they were not fully met. We had reservations for brunch, and our party of six was seated immediately on the beautiful second floor. Service was efficient throughout the meal, with our waiter taking our orders promptly and the food arriving quickly. To start, we ordered the Brussels and the hummus. The Brussels were cooked very well and had an excellent crispy texture, but I felt the kung pao vinaigrette lacked the bold flavor I was expecting. A little more sweetness and acidity would have helped brighten the dish and make it more memorable. The hummus, on the other hand, pleasantly surprised me. Both the red beet hummus and edamame hummus were flavorful and enjoyable. They paired well with the crisp flatbread and even served as a nice accompaniment to some of our less exciting entrées. For my meal, I ordered the marinated artichoke pizza, which unfortunately did not stand out. I had the same issue that I experienced during my previous visit: the crust was simply too thick and chewy. After a few slices, my jaw was genuinely getting tired from all the chewing. The pizza also could have benefited from more bacon and a more generous amount of sauce, as it came across a bit dry overall. The campanelle suffered from a similar problem. While I understand that simplicity was likely the goal, the dish was so understated that it ended up feeling bland. It tasted like a slightly elevated version of buttered pasta with just a hint of white wine. There was nothing particularly wrong with it, but it lacked the depth of flavor needed to make it memorable. On a much more positive note, the carrot cake pancakes were easily the star of the meal. I tend to gravitate toward savory breakfasts, but my sister was eager to try them, and I am so glad she did. These were not your typical pancakes. They were thick, fluffy, and incredibly soft in the center. With toppings like maple butter, maple cream, mascarpone whip, candied walnuts, and cardamom sugar, I expected the dish to be overwhelmingly sweet. Surprisingly, everything was balanced quite well. While I cannot imagine finishing an entire plate by myself, anyone with a sweet tooth would absolutely love them. Overall, this restaurant continues to impress me with its atmosphere, service, and a few standout dishes, but the entrées I have tried have not lived up to the hype. If I were to return, I would happily order the hummus and carrot cake pancakes again, but I would probably skip the pizza and pasta in favor of trying something new.
