I still like Roots. It's truly a unique concept and one-of-a-kind in all of Houston (self-serve wine tastings). However, my recent visit was just okay. It was warm and humid inside (Texas summer is mostly to blame). That said, the handful of whites that I sampled were not very chilled. Kinda defeated the purpose of getting a refreshing chenin blanc or rose. And a lot of the tasting notes were not available above the bottles. By the time my friend made her way through the tastings, she had already spent $20+. They also charge a 20% auto-grat. Not a fan of that percentage for self-serve and counter service (you have to order food at the register). We ended up going to Mimo down the street to sit at the bar, taste complimentary samples, and then order a full glass. I'll still go back to Roots but have kinda lowered my expectations of the wine selection and value. Some of the novelty has worn off. Good news is that their food is still solid: loved the mushroom toast and ricotta toast last I tried it. read more

This place is for good vibes only. As soon as you step through the door you can't help but notice the natural lighting, earthy decor, and peace in the atmosphere. I would limit groups to 3-4 people to avoid the crowding around the wine wall. I say that because the place feels more of an intimate experience that should be reserved for solo dates, dates with your significant other, or when you really need to have a heart to heart with someone. When I went, there were two large parties and the number of tables did not compliment the size of the space; it felt too crowded with all those people there. I enjoyed the smooth process of the wine experience but warning, you'll be surprised at how much you spend at the end so come during happy hour! The menu truly complimented the wine selection; my favorite being the shrimp. My only complaint is there is a major room for improvement in the lack of sweet treats. We came to Roots for my best friend's birthday dinner, and it was my first time here. From the moment we walked in, everything was smooth and welcoming. You do check in and put a card down, and they give you a tasting card that lets you sample different wines at various pour amounts. Such a cool and fun concept! We arrived during happy hour (I believe it's from 4-7 PM), which was perfect. The space itself is super cute and cozy. When we first arrived it wasn't too crowded, but it definitely started filling up closer to 6 PM. For happy hour, we ordered several appetizers to share between the three of us: shrimp, Brussels sprouts, and truffle fries -- all were SO good. Later, we ordered two steaks with fries, which were amazing and came with a buttery sauce that really took them to the next level. I also ordered the lemon pepper buffalo wings, and those were absolutely delicious as well. The service was great, especially considering there were only about two or three people working. Everyone was attentive and friendly. If you're a wine lover, you'll enjoy the wine selection. I'm a big Pinot Noir fan, and while there was only one Pinot option, I loved it so much that I kept going back to it. The wine tasting option made it easy to try a few others before deciding. Prices were very reasonable -- not overpriced at all -- especially for the quality of the food and experience. We didn't make reservations and were able to walk right in, though I'd recommend reservations if you're going later in the evening since it does get packed. Roots is located right across from some apartments in the EADO area and made for the perfect girls' night out. Great food, great service, great vibes. You give them your debit/credit card upon entry and they give you a white card that keeps track of all your pours from the over 50 bottles they have on tap. A bit in the middle of nowhere / residential area but such a cute wine tasting spot! The inside is nicely decorated but we sat outside since we had our dogs with us. It's a fun concept where you get a card and choose wines as you go along. They have a nice selection of whites, red, roses and even some orange from all over the country and internationally as well. If I'm thinking about wine, I'm thinking about Roots. They're not just one of my favorite places to imbibe, but also one of my preferred places to grab a bite. They have plenty of indoor and outdoor seating, immense selection for wine-os and a stellar food program. Whether it's a self-dine, date night, or group affair, I find that there's always a good reason to come here. It has become one of the best establishments in EaDo. It all starts with a charge card. Folks can load up cards at the front and insert them along the wall of wine for small / medium / large pours of regional wines. I am probably wrong, but I still have yet to find a place in the Houston area that does this. (#1) There is no pressure to buy bottles here, just sip away at your heart's content by trying everything from Willamette to Napa, from France to South Africa. Their open seating means this is one of the most group friendly places in the city. They have a ton of outdoor space with the tables and chairs to boot, along with a simple, yet industrial interior with AC (#2). There is also a private room area that is practically sound proof and has its own unique dining table complete with its own soundtrack. It's a cool departure from the rest of the establishment. No one talks about the food enough. Their plates are mainly tapas style, but there are some stellar selections if one plays their cards right. Their phyllo shrimp is strangely addicting and burrata is well executed. The juicy lucy burger seems like a standard entré but I was surprised at how juicy the burger actually was. The crab mac and cheese is always going to be a hit, even if the portion is conservative for such an indulgent dish. Many folks will order the cheeseboard since this is a wine spot after all, but I would recommend the calamari for an added savory option. I think what really sets them apart is the service. Garrett is constantly busting his butt to make sure folks are happy and is seen practically everywhere from the kitchen to the front patio. Eric is the man in the kitchen, who definitely knows how to whip up a mean dish. The irony of a place that offers self-serve wine offering top notch customer service is not lost on me. Parking is all street and I've not had issues finding it. I've been to Roots twice and both times have been great. The first was for a Yelp Elite Event so coming back the second time, I was curious to see how my experience would compare. The self serve wine taps are really cool. It's easy to get carried away sampling all the different wines. Wines can be dispensed in 1, 3, or 5 ounce pours. According to the website the wine offerings change weekly. They also have cider and beer. It's really cool that they feature wines from Texas wineries as well as women owned/operated wineries. On my first visit, I tried Mead for the first time and ended up buying a bottle of it because I really enjoyed it. The second visit, I ended up having two glasses of a Picpoul Blanc. I wanted a bottle but it was a bit pricey. They have so many wine options for every palate. The staff is more than willing to help or provide suggestions if you don't know where to begin. We ordered food from the happy hour menu: Patatas Bravas - These were really good! I liked the seasoning and the sauce that came with it. Wagyu Beef Tartare - Absolutely amazing! I was able to tolerate the texture since it came with crispy chips. The flavors were so good! I've only had beef tartare twice, but this was definitely my favorite one that I've tried so far. Salmon Ceviche - The texture was a bit too chewy for me, however the flavors were really good! Calamari - I don't like calamari so I didn't have any, but the presentation was nice. Everyone in the group who did eat it really enjoyed it. I love the neighborhood feel of Roots. They have a small patio out front and to the side of the restaurant. Parking is on the street in front of the building and on the side streets in the neighborhood. If you buy a bottle of wine, you get a 20% discount. Cost varies by type of wine and number of ounces. I used it as a wine tasting experience, having mostly only purchased at the 3oz price point. My date and I only racked up $25 in drinks between the two of us so I'd say it was a pretty good experience. I didn't try any food but that was available to order. We came on a Sunday so there was enough parking but I'd hate to imagine what parking looks like at peak hours. Staff was friendly and restaurant was clean. Again you can select your pour options at the machine, sip and enjoy. There are wine cards located above each wine option. (Remember to grab one) or else you WILL forget which wine you poured. The portions aren't big so be sure to order a few plates to enjoy. During the weekday customers can enjoy different specials. For brunch I ordered the Chicken & Biscuit served with hot honey. Three chicken strips and a small biscuit - my food was served hot and fresh. I wish I had more honey because it was truly delicious. There were plenty of seats available. Uhhhh I have to say the reviews deceived me about Roots :/. Maybe it was who I came with but I was not wowed at all. We got there around 8pm on a Tuesday evening and it was one other party in there. When you check in, you have to give your credit card and you receive a card that allows you to purchase glasses of wine. They have different pours at different prizes and an assortment ranging from red to white to select from. The red I tried was decent but I didn't care too much for it. I ordered the potato bravas and salmon cheviche, and both were decent as well. I'll give this spot another try but with better company. I have been wanting to try this business since I moved to Houston 6 months ago. I love wine tasting, and the concept of Roots really intrigued me. I got to visit last night to end my evening of birthday festivities. When you enter the business someone scans your ID and then you proceed to the register to get a purchase card. You give them your credit/debit card and they give you a purchase card that is linked to your personal card. You will use this purchase card at the machines to dispense your wine. They explain the process to you and then you're free to find a seat and start tasting. I didn't take count of how many wines were available, but there was a lot to choose from. Staff members will come by to answer questions and/or offer suggestions. Every wine has an info card that gives the purchase price of a bottle, the ABV, the notes and the region where it's from. Above each wine you will also find the correct glass for that particular selection. (The glasses were sparkling clean & crystal clear!). You can choose 3 different sizes pours that I would consider S, M or L. Prices range from $1+-$4+per pour. I feel the prices are very reasonable. As we sat and enjoyed our wine, staff was constantly coming by to remove empty glasses. Not one table ever had empty glasses sitting for long. The vibe is really laidback. There are tables for 2, tables for groups and small, more intimate sitting areas located throughout. The playlist was perfect and the music was loud enough to groove to, but not so loud a that you can't have a conversation. I had small pours of 4 different wines and my total was less than $7. I was also given a complimentary glass of champagne for my birthday. I thought that was a nice touch. The young lady that scanned my ID at the entrance noticed that it was my birthday, but I wasn't expecting anything. That was a pleasant surprise. I have a friend visiting from out of state next month, I will certainly add this to our list of things to do. This was the perfect way to end my birthday celebration. Oh, also worth mentioning. This is the only wine dispensary that I've been to around the Houston area. I've been here twice and both times, did not disappoint. The first time I came here was for a good friend's birthday. I didn't try the food the first time around as I had already eaten dinner beforehand, but the second time coming, I did try the cheese platter - manchego, white cheddar, and goat cheese paired with the recommended jellies and jams and crackers. To start, the wine is pretty good. I really like their system that they have going for the wine dispensary. They basically give you a card and you use it as your tab to dispense wine on the side of the bar where it shows the different wines to choose from. I'm a wine girly, but more of a sweet wine girly. There aren't too many sweet wines, but there are a few that I did enjoy. There was a strawberry wine that I particularly enjoyed and was probably the only wine that I got. Otherwise, the vibe and ambiance was aesthetically pleasing and chill/low key. It's honestly a perfect spot for date night. The service is friendly as well and they'll help set you up with how everything works, and are super helpful. I definitely recommend this place and rate it a 10/10. All the stars are for the burger! First thing I didn't love was that we paid a $10 per person deposit for a reservation and then still had to wait in line to set up our wine cards and order food. Highly recommend checking this place out! Located super close to East Downtown and on the other side of I-45 opposite of University of Houston main campus. We came here for Houston Restaurant Week and got the $25 brunch menu. Brunch is available on Saturday and Sunday from 11am-4pm. The Wagyu Beef Tartare was a fine combination of saltiness and taste factor. My Juicy Lucy burger was without the cheddar because of my dairy allergy and I removed the Dijon as well due to personal preference. I'm generally a picky eater with pickled shallots, but they added crunchiness to my scrumptious wagyu beef. I like how you receive a wine card to participate in the wine tasting. It acts like a credit card and all charges are on the card that you paid with at the register. We were able to try different wines for only $7! You get to choose which pour you want too. You also order food at the register and you seat yourself. They have lovely signs with the menu QR code for your convenience. Very aesthetically pleasing for photos and free mimosas to add! I highly recommend the Wildflyer strawberry mead wine if you like a light honey taste. My brother and sister tried other wines that weren't as memorable to us as the Wildflyer.
