Solid beef noodle restaurant with a simple menu and great food. The atmosphere is very cozy and you are treated well like family. The food come out very fresh and was super satisfying on a rainy day. Quick, filling, great value, and no frills.
Nothing warms me up like a big bowl of noodle soup, and 88 Beef Noodle makes Beef Noodle Soup just how I like it. One night, my fiancé and I were in Arcadia, passing by and starving after a long day of errands. I had just thought, "Oh jeez I wish I could have a big bowl of noodles right now" haha, and my fiancé pulled up in 88 Beef Noodle plaza on Baldwin at around 8:30 PM, since we saw they were still open. We were very grateful what looked like, the owners, still seated us and made us two big bowls of noodle soup. We just wanted a quick bite so we didn't fancy the appetizers this time, but I definitely want to come back and try them. We ordered 1 House Beef Noodle Soup + 1 House Beef Noodle Soup w/ Tendon. The bowls were huge and packed with beef. The beef was what you'd expect - oh so tender, juicy, and packed with rich flavor. The tendons in my soup were especially fun to eat and had a melt-in-your-mouth texture. I would come back just for the tendon in their soup. Aside from the beef, what makes a great Beef Noodle Soup for me is broth, and the chewy noodles. Their dish hits all stars. I can taste the hearty layered broth flavor and the aromatics they added in it, especially the star anise. The broth was savory, and slightly sweet almost, and so umami! Their springy noodles were a joy to eat as well - in China, we call it "Q" meaning a noodle is very bouncy and has a great chewy texture. Thank you for taking care of us that one night 88 Beef Noodle owners! I hope to get to try your appetizers and enjoy your beef noodle soup again very soon.
It's in their name, so it must be good, no? What has stopped me in the past was that I tried two other local places for beef noodle soup, and they just couldn't cut it. Something was missing in their flavors that made the soup not all that satisfying. So, one fine evening I decided I should give this place a try hoping the third time's the charm. As others have mentioned, the lady at the front was very kind. I decided on ordering the #1 House Beef Noodle Soup to-go, which came out to around $17. The lady said it would be ready in about 10 minutes which turned out to be closer to 5 minutes. After I got home, I carefully combined the soup with noodles, and within seconds I noticed how fragrantly comforting the broth was. Indeed, my expectations were exceeded. The soup turned out rich and the beef moist and seasoned to perfection. I wolved it down quicker than I thought and realized I wanted more, even though it was a sizeable portion of noodles. Over the past several months when I'd passed by, there would be a man sitting inside during the lull of summer staring into space, passing time smoking a cigarette. It definitely left an impression on me. One other time, I noticed that some of the windows were boarded up which was concerning, cause I thought they were either burgled or going out of business. Luckily for us all, they are still around.
I was looking for a place to get my beef noodle soup fix. While looking on yelp, I stumbled upon this place that also had cold chicken sesame noodle.. something else we've been looking for so we decided to give this place a try. We ordered the cold appetizer platter, spicy wontons, premium beef noodle soup, cold sesame noodles and an order of the xiao long baos. The spicy wontons were perfection with a hint of citrus which came from the vinegar that was in the dish. The wontons were not too spicy but had a light peppercorn flavor. The beef noodle soup was light in consistency but very flavorful unlike other places where the soup feels a bit heavy. The texture of the noodles was nice and springy in both the beef noodle soup and cold sesame noodle dish! The xiao long bao was good but next time I think I'll opt for the leek pancakes! Xiao long bao skin texture was a little thick and I can do without this dish. I'll definitely be back ! Everything was delicious and this place is quiet and clean. My friend and I employ the 3-star method for specialty Asian restaurants: The rating is balanced between those looking for good service and those looking for good food. 88 Beef Noodle definitely falls in that category. Don't expect to get stellar service -- because it's just a mom in her kitchen -- but you know you're getting a meal that tastes like home. Sick of studying for finals, we made the 40-minute drive to Arcadia in search of warm, soupy noodles. I ordered the House Beef Noodle Soup (老爺牛肉麵) and Leek Pan Cake (韭菜盒子). I think I would probably translate them more as chive pockets? I was honestly really homesick and it tasted just like food my mom makes or what I would get on the street in Taiwan. The beef was so flavorful and melt-in-your-mouth; probably one of the best places I've had beef in America other than in my own kitchen. The noodles were a little bit more like what you'd typically see in a dry noodle dish so I was initially thrown off, but it grew on me since it was great at soaking up the flavor from the soup. The chive pockets were just what I would expect them to be, and they also made for great leftovers the next day. I'm pretty sure the lady taking our orders was also the one in the back making all of the food; definitely tastes like a family operation filled with love and labor.
The 4 stars are strictly for the beef stew noodle and I wouldn't try out other stuff. Their beef stew noodle is really good and you can pick between the types of beef (tendon, meat, or mix). It's gently spicy and very tender. The presentation is so so and the store itself is old, but that's where you find food cooked with the heart. This is a long time mom and pop shop so there is a small wait for the food. The day I went was only a mom doing everything (cook, take orders, serve, etc)
I've driven past this place like a million times while going traveling up north Baldwin Ave to the mall so I decided to give it a shot. They have a specific parking lot which is not shared with the other businesses north of it. It's blocked off so you cannot cross each parking lot. The main entrance is actually on Baldwin Ave and the nearest cross street of Arcadia Ave is an exit. The parking is a one way. Upon entering this place, it's like a mom and pop shop. It's not a very big place either. When I walked in, I saw some older folks folding dumplings so it seems like their dumplings are made in house. The inside feels a bit run down and the table was a little sticky. It reminds me of those small restaurants back in the 90s and early 2000s. I ordered two items, their spicy beef noodle soup and some juicy pork dumplings aka xiao long bao. The portion size of the beef noodle soup was good, there was enough noodles and the beef looked and tasted very tender. It was really good. In the picture I thought it's bok choy but in reality it's spinach. I found that a little weird. The juicy pork dumpling would be a pass from me. The skin is really thick and tough to eat. It's not on the same level as Din Tai Fung or Mama Lu. There is literally no service, they drop off your food and then they disappear. It's one of the places where you come for the food and not for the service. Pricing for this place is alright, it's not too expensive but it's inline with other beef noodle places. I would highly recommend not using the restroom here as it has seen better days. It's on the outside and it's really really run down. There's a locker inside and it's super rusty. Overall, good beef noodle soup, no service, average pricing, and parking is small. One of the best beef noodle soup places around.
My friends and I came here on a random Wednesday night before going to see light scape at the Arboretum. They had a standing bar outside for an outdoor dining space. The noodles were good but I wouldn't warrant an out of the way trip here for them. Prices are cheap and they take card. The service was friendly but brisk.
We have been driving by this place for years and have been wanting to try it and finally got the chance. Careful if you try to turn into the lot off of Arcadia as it is one way and you are not supposed yo enter from this side (see pic), although we saw lots of people doing it. The lot is on a small strip mall shared with other businesses and is divided from the rest of the mall. So if you enter from Baldwin (only legal entrance) it is the second driveway. The lot is pretty small and parking will be challenging when busy. We ordered numerous items to try them and took left overs home: #1 House Beef Noodle Soup, #10 Noodles with Minced Pork Sauce w/ side dish (i.e., Taiwanese style jajangmyeon), #18 Curry Chicken Fried Rice, and #22 Leek Pancake. All of the items were good, but the #1 had the best flavor. It is spicy so we asked for medium spicy. The noodles in the soup of #1 seemed identical to the noodles in the #10 jajangmyeon. The broth was the best part of the soup, but the beef and noodles were good. The noodles tasted much better on the #10 jajangmyeon. The Taiwanese style typically has a lighter and less flavorful sauce than the Korean version and so adding some Chinese hot sauce provided on the tables improved the flavor. The "side dish" was pickled vegetables and while tastes vary, we just don't care for the style of pickling 88BN uses, which is pretty standard for many places. If you like curry like we do and if you like fried rice, then you should like the #18. The curry flavor was strong and good but not overpowering. The #22 is not a pancake and is what we call a "chive pocket" or "chive bao" at other places. At 88 BN it had the standard items of vermicelli glass noodles, egg, and leeks/chives, but also small bits of tofu. The skin at 88 BN was thinner and less greasy than many other places and this was nice. We did not use hot sauce on it, but if not flavorful enough for you, then using some will work. We would get all these items again, but would want to try: #4 Premium Beef Noodle Soup, #9 Cold Noodle Plate with Chicken, and #16 Spicy Wonton (pork and shrimp), and "I" Combination Cold Plate. The lady who was our server was nice and did a good job. The inside is small and has relatively little seating. It might be tough for large groups and do takeout or catering might be better for that. It was not busy when we went on 11:00 on a Sunday , so it was pretty quiet. You need a key to go to the restroom, which is outside in the back. The restroom is clean but it it what we think of as "old school style Chinese restaurant" or old and run down. Just remember to bring your umbrella if it is raining and you plan to use the toilet. Overall the Yelp rating for this place is too low and should be a 4-5 star. We would definitely recommend giving 88 BN a try, but would suggest eating in rather than take out as the style of dishes served here will probably taste better that way.
Tuesday work Lunch November temps be droppin so my wonton soup craving kicks in hard. Ordered over the phone after brief text flurry with coworker to share: 1 wonton soup me 1 leek pancake her Quoted 15 min Food was ready and packed on time Entered and noted One staff taking lunch but immediately addressed me when I came in (in mandarin). I don't speak Chinese but understood "phone" and adapted to the context. To go service was simple and efficient. Wonton soup was to my taste, very good. 8 Roughly golf ball size wontons packed in broth. Leek pancake is a filled pan fried item with what looks like, glass noodle, chive, chopped tofu, egg, and probably leek unless leek = chives. Good flavor and size, 2 large half circles with a ton of filling. One order fills the container and each of 2 portions is about 1 inch of filling and a reasonably thin pan fried skin, not thick or doughy. I understand that both will be best fresh in store but the wonton soup travelled well back to my office and the leek pancake was probably less crispy but still tasty. Enjoyed lunch! Will be back!

Really good Beef Stew Noodles. Very much like Mandarin Deli but with a bit more kick. The onion pancakes are fluffy and not like a pancake at all. Delicious. Dumplings are good with thin skin on the dumplings. read more
I miss this place. Since there are so many places in SGV that serves noodle dishes (or bowls) I haven't returned for well over a year. So finally, on a nice cold day, the craving for a bowl of beef noodle soup struck. We arrived early afternoon so there was no lunch rush, but there's only one lady (owner) working the entire floor. We ordered the #1, beef noodle soup and the Taiwanese Chow Mein. The chow mein has really great flavor, and not greasy as you might find in the Cantonese version, but the noodles were lacking. I mean, how much are noodles? I understand if it were lobster or crab... But noodles? The plate was full of onions and cabbage. The beef noodle soup had a nice broth base. Great flavor w a bit of spice. Not the best I ever had but not too bad. However, the quality of beef was disappointing. It should be very tender, meaty w a bit of fat for flavor. Instead, most pieces were chunks of chewy fat w just a bit of lean meat. The lean pieces were a bit tough, suggesting they weren't cooked low & slow. For the small portion, the prices are slightly higher than other places throughout the SGV, which have more spacious seating and larger portions. This place is decent, but if I crave beef noodle soup again, I may go elsewhere, like 101 Noodle across the parking lot. Note: * restrooms are behind the building, ask for a key. * perhaps try to avoid lunch hours, they have a thin staff and you may have to wait. * they offer freshly made soy milk, which I haven't tried yet. read more
We were craving some beef noodles so we decided to try this restaurant out. We arrived around 8pm on a Friday evening and there were lots of open tables available. We ordered a bowl of the classic beef noodle soup (#1) and fried leek pancakes (#22). The beef noodles were just okay. I liked the consistency of the noodles but the soup was pretty bland and seemed watered down. The beef was also very tough and chewy. The leek pancakes were filled with leek, eggs, glass noodles, and tofu. I actually enjoyed this dish much more than the noodles but not enough to come back just for that. The restaurant is small, old, and doesn't feel super clean. Make sure that you look at your receipt before you pay because the waitress wrote down a higher price for the noodles than what was on the menu! read more

This restaurant has been here for a very long while...so it must be pretty good, right? My bf likes this place over Bull Demon King, so I was willing to give it a try. We got: Combination cold platter: For the amount you get and the presentation, it doesn't really look like a dish worth over $10. In fact, most places charge around $7...There was weird slime or something on all the parts of the dish, but other than that, the taste was pretty flavorful, albeit salty. Half beef half tendon with glass noodles: This isn't the type of glass noodles I like, which is offered by Bull demon king and chewier. This one was crisp and kinda meh, but oh well. The beef was okay and the tendon was in giant chunks. The broth itself was all right as well--seriously, nothing stood out. Pretty plain, broth was kinda murky/separated and oil congealed very quickly on the surface (literally 1 minute after I got the dish), which makes me question the freshness of the product. Overall, I wouldn't come here again. Everything looked run down and not very sanitary, and that weird congealment made me question if I was eating leftovers or not. Sorry, but I'm sticking to Bull Demon King for my beef noodles. read more

I love 88 Beef Noodle! I try to eat plant-based, but am not strict about it, so if dishes sound like they are vegan or vegetarian, you should verify that they are made with no animal products if this is critical to you. First, this is not a fancy restaurant. It is a small family business and often the only person taking orders, cooking, cleaning tables, and serving food is one woman. At times, her daughter helps out with the front, but mom is the one doing all of the cooking. The building is in need of some maintenance (for example, when it rains it leaks inside and they need buckets, the windows need cleaning), but it's not dirty. We all really need to support family businesses and this restaurant is worth your support. Parking in the lot is limited and be careful to only access it from Baldwin, but if there is no parking, I've never had a problem finding street parking. Now the food. These dishes are highly recommended: - scallion pancake - this is not like any I've ever had. It is super thin and heaped beautifully on the plate. I saw people tearing off pieces and dipping them in their soup and I bet that was delicious, but also delicious all on its own with a side dish or appetizer. - sauteed rice cake with vegetables (has chicken) - I ordered this dish not knowing it had small pieces of shredded white meat chicken, but I will say this was probably my favorite dish. White it is clearly Asian, it reminded me of chicken and dumplings. It's got a lot of sauce and feels like a stew. The vegetable is large, sliced bok choy and it's a light-colored sauce that has a lot of white pepper and other spices - delicate and tasty. The rice cakes were the most tender I've ever had. Overall, an amazing dish. - Savory bean curd appetizer - many Taiwanese restaurants have this as an appetizer, but this one is different. It's very dry, very thinly sliced, served over a bed of boiled peanuts, and drizzled with a little chili oil. Love it. - sauteed spinach - perfectly cooked and seasoned, simple and delicious. I recommend this over the sauteed cabbage, which is good, but not as tasty as the spinach. - Pasta with Tomato Basil Sauce - I hesitated to try this one, because why would I order an Italian dish at an Asian restaurant? Boy was i wrong! This was unusual and delicious. When it came out of the kitchen, I was worried because it was so soupy looking and I thought maybe the angel hair pasta had not been drained well. Not the case. For lack of a better description, I'd call this Asian fusion. It is a tomato sauce topped with Parmesan, but the mushrooms are shiitake and the sauce tastes completely different from an Italian sauce. I can't wait to order this dish again, which is crazy. I got the one without meat, but there are versions with seafood and beef. Try it! - cucumber appetizer - typical Taiwanese appetizer well done and worth ordering. These dishes are not recommended: - long bean appetizer and Szechuan pickled vegetables - their pickled items lack flavor and taste only like vinegar. The long bean appetizer is somewhat slimy, which is off-putting. - leek pocket - many people like this, but it wasn't my favorite. I think it may have had dried shrimp and that might have been it, but not sure. Do not pass this place up! If you're a meat eater, take a look at the other reviews as it looks like the beef soups are good - they certainly look good when I've seen them ordered. Support family-owned businesses! read more

So one of the Taiwanese guy I know recommended this restaurant to me and he said that 88 Beef Noodle's beef noodle soup is just as good as SinBala's beef noodle soup. I had my doubt and my suspicious was right - 88 Beef Noodle's beef noodle soup ended up somewhat of a disappointment. Parking: One of the more confusing (and difficult to park) strip mall parking lots you'll find in the San Gabriel Valley. Too many "5-minutes only" parking spaces. The menu is fairly similar to 101 Noodle Express - various noodles, fried rices, beef rolls (here is called pancake wrapped with beef & veggie), dumplings, etc. *** 4 - 1/2 Tendon & 1/2 Beef Noodle Soup ($9.95): I didn't like spicy oil broth and noodle + beef were average at best. For almost $10, I can find much better beef noodle soups in the area. 13 - Spicy Wonton (Pork & Shrimp, 8 pieces - $6.95): Probably the best order of the night. Decent wonton stuffed with pork & shimp and spicy oil wasn't as spicy as I thought. J - Combination Cold Platter ($9.95): Platter was below average. Both texture and flavors didn't hit the spot at all. *** I am not coming back here again and I'll stick with SinBala's beef noodle soup (my personal favorite) or even Bull Demon King's beef noodle soup. read more

We gave them a call close to closing time as we didn't realize they closed at 7PM but they were still happy to take our orders. We ordered their zhajiang main and also their 5-spice beef shaobing (sesame flaky bun), the latter recommended to us by the staff. They were very nice when we picked up the food after hours. The zhajiang main was a pretty large portion. They had julienned cucumbers for toppings which was new for me. The sauce tasted right and was the right amount so it wasn't too salty. Noodles were soft and thick enough for chinese zhajiang mian. There was a slight oily taste to the sauce which I didn't really find as a problem as it didn't really affect the taste negatively. Would've liked more cilantro/scallions for toppings if that was an option next time! read more

GREAT tasting Braised Beef Noodle Soup and wonderful cold plates! And a new and addicting discovery - the Tomato Basil Angel Hair. Here's the breakdown: *Braised Beef Noodle Soup Btw, 88 is baba in Mandarin, which is close to "papa" so essentially, this is really their "Papa's beef noodle soup" special. And special it is! It taste like a family recipe, really delicious. Definitely a must have if you're in craving some good ol Taiwanese comfort food. *Spicy Shrimp and Pork Wonton in Chili Oil This dish is outstanding. Super delicious wontons with shrimp in every wonton. The chili oil they have here is really good too. I'd suggest you order this as a side for your party to share in addition to a noodle. *Tomato Basil Angel Hair Really, you must try this... A random Italian dish in a small Taiwanese joint? I know right!?!? But trust me, this simple tomato basil angel hair is SOOO good! Very fresh and super tasty.... its spectacular, I must have had it 3 times in the last month already. *Combination Cold Plate A must get every time. This plate includes beef, tripe, tendon, pig ears, tofu, egg, an peanuts. REALLY good!! *Iced Coffee Very strong and extra tasty. Similar to your typical Vietnamese Ice coffee, but this one has an extra flavor added that makes it that much more tasty. I came for the beef noodle but ending up also loving the the tomato basil sauce with angel hair. It was seriously a diamond in the rough kind of discovery for me! Since I had such a good experience with the beef noodle and the angel hair, I've been coming back at least once a week since they've opened! The service has always been friendly with a smile and parking has never been a problem. Needless to say, I'll be back so frequently that if you happen to try this place, I'll probably be there! read more
This place sucks!!! Food is not nasty but nothing special, no service, and it pretty much just exists for nothing. Sorry it's a little harsh but I haven't been to a place recently that I regret going to. There r only 2 ppl working and the front of the house lady is pretty much only there to take the order, deliver the food and the rest of the times were no where to be seen. We were pretty much the only 2 ppl in there during dinner time on a Sunday. So many times right after we sat down, I wanted to leave and go next door to 101 noodle express but I stayed to give it a Lesson learnt, when in doubt, RUN!! The taste of the beef noodle was ok. It has a few pieces of beef, soup, spinach and that's pretty much it. No pickles or anything. Also ordered the pan seared dumpling, they claimed that it's homemade and the picture looks decent. When it arrived, they looked like "homemade" Wei chuan frozen dumplings. A 5 yr old could've made that. Sorry. Again, the food tasted alright, but I felt like this place is nothing but a lie, including the prices on the menu outside and the menu they give u after u sit down. After this awesome meal, we wanted to leave and the lady was no where to be found. We just left the money on the table and left and then forever regret coming here. read more

Had a hankering for some beef noodles and decided to try this place out. I figured it had 88 in the name so it must be good. Well long story short this place had your typical Asian service. The server who helped me was friendly but looked like she wished she was elsewhere. The food was ok with bland flavor. I added some hot sauce and it made it better. The highlight was the Mango smoothie made with fresh mangos. Overall an ok place for lunch but there better options. Free parking in lot. read more

Won tons, ordered dry with chili oil, garnished w green onion. Super flavorful. These are solid Chinese style won tons, w a good amount of pork and shrimp-- enough to pass the Chinese grandma test. Beef noodle soup was, as usual, perfect. I went with the 50/50: half meat, half well-cooked tendon. Somehow reminds me of meals I had growing up. My visit was mid afternoon, and they were operating with an apparent skeleton crew. But then again, I don't visit these ethnic places for the service as much as the food and the cultural experience. This medium taco stand-sized Chinese place has surprisingly good beef noodles! While the noodles are typical store brand fare, the rest of the dish is well done. The soup is flavorful, the meat/tendons/tripe are all well marinated and tender, and the spinach is a nice green touch for the bowl. Payment: Credit cards accepted for $10+ Parking: Spaces are tight in this lot, but you can park at any of the spots immediately adjacent to the building without worrying about time restrictions. Otherwise, there might be spots on Arcadia Ave. or in the HSBC lot across the street. read more

This is a noodle house in Arcadia surrounded by some heavy hitters of the Asian cuisine world. However, I believe 88 Beef Noodle does a descent job holding their own in the shark infested waters. I opted for the premium noodles which includes beef, trip and tendon. The meat was a little chewy and could have been more tender. The tripe and tendon was spot on. I thought the soup was fairly tasty, well balanced and not oily. Although, the broth could have a been a tad hotter. The noodles were also a little too soft. I also ordered the pancake wrapped with beef. I found this plate to be a little dry and felt it needed some sauce to balance off the dryness. The scallions and onions gave it a good kick of flavor. My friend got the oxtail soup and it had a tomato based broth. I was able to try a little and it very much tasted like minestrone soup. The oxtail was tender and had a gelatinous texture. read more
