I'm from Taiwan and have had some famous beef noodles there and I can say this place tastes even better than a lot of those. The best part is the beef. It is so common to find the beef noodles with very dry beef and not tender at all even at those popular places but I was so impressed by the beef being so juicy and tender at this place. We were craving some beef noodles so we decided to try this restaurant out. We arrived around 8pm on a Friday evening and there were lots of open tables available. We ordered a bowl of the classic beef noodle soup (#1) and fried leek pancakes (#22). The beef noodles were just okay. I liked the consistency of the noodles but the soup was pretty bland and seemed watered down. The beef was also very tough and chewy. The leek pancakes were filled with leek, eggs, glass noodles, and tofu. I actually enjoyed this dish much more than the noodles but not enough to come back just for that. The restaurant is small, old, and doesn't feel super clean. Make sure that you look at your receipt before you pay because the waitress wrote down a higher price for the noodles than what was on the menu! read more

Decided to have a family lunch at this noodle house once. Parking is open, but interior seating is not suitable for a party great than 4 people. We ordered the beef roll and several beef noodle soups. I must say that I was slightly disappointed with our entire order. Portions for the noodle soup was extremely small. While I'm aware that soup base for beef noodle soup is soy, the saltiness was on a different level. Also, it shouldn't be called beef tendon noodle soup if you only get 1 piece of beef tendon. A traditional beef roll is supposed to be wrapped with a scallion pancake like sheet (or similar), but I think our's was wrapped in a flour tortilla. Likely not to repeat. Definitely a better experience from a local 101 Noodle instead. read more

I love 88 Beef Noodle! I try to eat plant-based, but am not strict about it, so if dishes sound like they are vegan or vegetarian, you should verify that they are made with no animal products if this is critical to you. First, this is not a fancy restaurant. It is a small family business and often the only person taking orders, cooking, cleaning tables, and serving food is one woman. At times, her daughter helps out with the front, but mom is the one doing all of the cooking. The building is in need of some maintenance (for example, when it rains it leaks inside and they need buckets, the windows need cleaning), but it's not dirty. We all really need to support family businesses and this restaurant is worth your support. Parking in the lot is limited and be careful to only access it from Baldwin, but if there is no parking, I've never had a problem finding street parking. Now the food. These dishes are highly recommended: - scallion pancake - this is not like any I've ever had. It is super thin and heaped beautifully on the plate. I saw people tearing off pieces and dipping them in their soup and I bet that was delicious, but also delicious all on its own with a side dish or appetizer. - sauteed rice cake with vegetables (has chicken) - I ordered this dish not knowing it had small pieces of shredded white meat chicken, but I will say this was probably my favorite dish. White it is clearly Asian, it reminded me of chicken and dumplings. It's got a lot of sauce and feels like a stew. The vegetable is large, sliced bok choy and it's a light-colored sauce that has a lot of white pepper and other spices - delicate and tasty. The rice cakes were the most tender I've ever had. Overall, an amazing dish. - Savory bean curd appetizer - many Taiwanese restaurants have this as an appetizer, but this one is different. It's very dry, very thinly sliced, served over a bed of boiled peanuts, and drizzled with a little chili oil. Love it. - sauteed spinach - perfectly cooked and seasoned, simple and delicious. I recommend this over the sauteed cabbage, which is good, but not as tasty as the spinach. - Pasta with Tomato Basil Sauce - I hesitated to try this one, because why would I order an Italian dish at an Asian restaurant? Boy was i wrong! This was unusual and delicious. When it came out of the kitchen, I was worried because it was so soupy looking and I thought maybe the angel hair pasta had not been drained well. Not the case. For lack of a better description, I'd call this Asian fusion. It is a tomato sauce topped with Parmesan, but the mushrooms are shiitake and the sauce tastes completely different from an Italian sauce. I can't wait to order this dish again, which is crazy. I got the one without meat, but there are versions with seafood and beef. Try it! - cucumber appetizer - typical Taiwanese appetizer well done and worth ordering. These dishes are not recommended: - long bean appetizer and Szechuan pickled vegetables - their pickled items lack flavor and taste only like vinegar. The long bean appetizer is somewhat slimy, which is off-putting. - leek pocket - many people like this, but it wasn't my favorite. I think it may have had dried shrimp and that might have been it, but not sure. Do not pass this place up! I miss this place. Since there are so many places in SGV that serves noodle dishes (or bowls) I haven't returned for well over a year. So finally, on a nice cold day, the craving for a bowl of beef noodle soup struck. We arrived early afternoon so there was no lunch rush, but there's only one lady (owner) working the entire floor. We ordered the #1, beef noodle soup and the Taiwanese Chow Mein. The chow mein has really great flavor, and not greasy as you might find in the Cantonese version, but the noodles were lacking. I mean, how much are noodles? I understand if it were lobster or crab... But noodles? The plate was full of onions and cabbage. The beef noodle soup had a nice broth base. Great flavor w a bit of spice. Not the best I ever had but not too bad. However, the quality of beef was disappointing. It should be very tender, meaty w a bit of fat for flavor. Instead, most pieces were chunks of chewy fat w just a bit of lean meat. The lean pieces were a bit tough, suggesting they weren't cooked low & slow. For the small portion, the prices are slightly higher than other places throughout the SGV, which have more spacious seating and larger portions. This place is decent, but if I crave beef noodle soup again, I may go elsewhere, like 101 Noodle across the parking lot. Half beef half tendon with glass noodles: This isn't the type of glass noodles I like, which is offered by Bull demon king and chewier. This one was crisp and kinda meh, but oh well. The beef was okay and the tendon was in giant chunks. The broth itself was all right as well--seriously, nothing stood out. Pretty plain, broth was kinda murky/separated and oil congealed very quickly on the surface (literally 1 minute after I got the dish), which makes me question the freshness of the product. Overall, I wouldn't come here again. Everything looked run down and not very sanitary, and that weird congealment made me question if I was eating leftovers or not. I always come here for the beef noodle soup (half tendon version) and it always hits the spot!!! The soup is full of flavor and the noodles are always the perfect consistency. This time I wanted to try something else and got their Cold Noodles (#9 on their menu) since it was a hot day, and I was very satisfied! It came with a peanut flavored sauce, an assortment of veggies, and some chicken. For a noodle lover like myself I didn't mind that there was a lot more noodles than toppings. I would definitely come back for this cold noodle dish this summer. It was an weird atmosphere coming here on a Friday night. There was no one but a large group (from another table) and my table. They don't play music or anything so you can overhear the next table over conversations. It was awkward. I never been here and wanted to eat some simple comfort food and saw their advertisement displays driving by here all the time. It is a small family business so I can understand that in this tough economy, it is hard to compete with larger and similar food but there must be a reason why on a Friday, it is empty. Service and food is subpar; nothing exciting. I like that their menu was simple, but you would think you would get more for what you pay from the picture. The menu is fairly similar to 101 Noodle Express - various noodles, fried rices, beef rolls (here is called pancake wrapped with beef & veggie), dumplings, etc. *** 4 - 1/2 Tendon & 1/2 Beef Noodle Soup ($9.95): I didn't like spicy oil broth and noodle + beef were average at best. For almost $10, I can find much better beef noodle soups in the area. 13 - Spicy Wonton (Pork & Shrimp, 8 pieces - $6.95): Probably the best order of the night. Decent wonton stuffed with pork & shimp and spicy oil wasn't as spicy as I thought. J - Combination Cold Platter ($9.95): Platter was below average. Dropped by this small family owned restaurant craving for soup noodle. The food was surprisingly yummy. The shrimp and pork wonton soup was delicious, and they don't skimp on the filling....each wonton is pretty big. The beef of the spicy noodle soup was tender, and although I am not a big fan of beef, I loved this one. The soups are definitely tasty. Also tried their gyoza and fried rice. It was the bomb. The beef noodle soup comes with multiple cuts of beef: tendon and brisket . Parking is usually not a problem, but the plaza it is in can be busy so occasionally it is not easy to find a spot. We gave them a call close to closing time as we didn't realize they closed at 7PM but they were still happy to take our orders. We ordered their zhajiang main and also their 5-spice beef shaobing (sesame flaky bun), the latter recommended to us by the staff. They were very nice when we picked up the food after hours. The zhajiang main was a pretty large portion. They had julienned cucumbers for toppings which was new for me. The sauce tasted right and was the right amount so it wasn't too salty. Noodles were soft and thick enough for chinese zhajiang mian. There was a slight oily taste to the sauce which I didn't really find as a problem as it didn't really affect the taste negatively. This is a noodle house in Arcadia surrounded by some heavy hitters of the Asian cuisine world. However, I believe 88 Beef Noodle does a descent job holding their own in the shark infested waters. I opted for the premium noodles which includes beef, trip and tendon. The meat was a little chewy and could have been more tender. The tripe and tendon was spot on. I thought the soup was fairly tasty, well balanced and not oily. Although, the broth could have a been a tad hotter. The noodles were also a little too soft. I also ordered the pancake wrapped with beef. I found this plate to be a little dry and felt it needed some sauce to balance off the dryness. The scallions and onions gave it a good kick of flavor. My friend got the oxtail soup and it had a tomato based broth. I was able to try a little and it very much tasted like minestrone soup. The oxtail was tender and had a gelatinous texture. read more

Pretty good!! Very homey be nostalgic food for a Taiwanese American girl like me :) I ordered the Beef Noodle soup with tendons and there was a good amount of meat and the nooooodles!! The noodles were very fresh tasting and elastic-y, just how I like them. The soup was a little bit spicy, which is just how much I can take. Overall, I like this beef noodle soup. The braised pork rice really made me close my eyes and savor up, because the flavor was very rich and umami, very homey and hot the spot for me perfectly. It has a few pieces of beef, soup, spinach and that's pretty much it. No pickles or anything. Also ordered the pan seared dumpling, they claimed that it's homemade and the picture looks decent. When it arrived, they looked like "homemade" Wei chuan frozen dumplings. A 5 yr old could've made that. Sorry. Again, the food tasted alright, but I felt like this place is nothing but a lie, including the prices on the menu outside and the menu they give u after u sit down. For a hole in the wall joint, the prices are actually higher than I expected. Nevertheless, the beef noodle soup was decent. I feel as though if I ate here, I could get my food quickly and leave. It appears as though they accept credit cards, with a minimum $10 purchase. Parking is somewhat odd. The spaces directly in front of the restaurant are painted with "15 minute parking only." Well, I am not going to eat my food in 15 minutes. Then, I drove around the parking lot and noticed 30 minute parking. I am also not going to park for only 30 minutes. I am not sure what is going on with the parking, but then I found a parking spot for 1 hour. The restroom is located in the back of the restaurant. You need a key to enter.
