Shwe Taung Rice Bowl and Burmese Restaurant was a very pleasant surprise. Neither my wife nor I had ever eaten Burmese food, so we didn't know what to expect. The restraint is small and hidden in a tiny strip mall. There is a small parking lot, but ample street parking. Shwe Taung's menu is extensive and full of exotic and enticing dishes. We ordered Coconut Chicken Khao Soi, Shan Noodles, and Mixed Tempura Fries. Each dish was wonderful. They all had unique mixtures of spices -- flavorful but not too hot. Both noodle dishes were unlike anything we've ever encountered, and it will be difficult not to order the same things when we return. Still, the menu contains many other tempting choices. The service was friendly and professional. Our waiter was extremely helpful to two Burmese food neophytes. We will certainly return in the near future. I had a great experience at Shwe Taung! I've driven past it multiple times and have always been curious to try...I got the flaky catfish curry which comes with rice and soup and several pieces of refreshing cucumber as well as a side of chili sauce/paste. I also ordered a single piece of paratha. And they were really kind to let me sample a different fish dish, it is pressure cooked if I'm recalling correctly. The catfish curry was yummy. Flavorful and very filling. The portion was quite generous, it will last me 2 meals total. I really liked the paratha. It was flaky and yummy. The sample of fish had a delicious sauce. Homey food. Wish more people could try the food here since we were practically the only people eating there on a Sunday. The royal tea leaf salad was crunchy and had the right balance. The portion size for this was abysmal compared to past customer photos. My friend also told the server of her vegan dietary restriction and was recommended this salad. However when it first arrived, it was topped with a pile of dried shredded fish. We sent it back and I'm pretty sure they just scooped it out. While waiting for our meal, I could hear the chef cooking...Chef Microwave thanks to the distinctive beeps we were hearing. Our first time back after it changed owners and name. This was on our radar for a bit and the day came when we wanted to try something different. On a weekday lunchtime, they weren't busy at all. It was easy to snag parking at the small lot in front. There are some outdoor seats for warmer weather and the tables inside are for 4. My first choice was the Coconut Khao Soi, which is their Burmese version of a Thai Curry Noodle, but unfortunately they started making it late that day and I would've had to wait an hour. So we went tooth the Tea Leaf Rice that's served with a couple of deep fried wings, plus Fish Cake Curry. The tea leaf rice was very mild. I expected it to be packed with flavor like their tea leaf salad. The wings tasted like they were refried because the meat was a bit tough. Maybe that's how it's supposed to be in Burmese cuisine but took me off guard. The fish curry was the opposite with very bold and spicy flavors. The sauce and the chopped onions were great poured Uber rice. The staff was at a bare minimum with one gal working the front and another that occasionally appeared to bring food out, but the service was great. Very pleasant friendly gal that helped us. It appeared they were still working on the interior as I noticed tools lying around. The TV played Burmese music videos, which gave it that extra bit of exotic vibe. There are still some items I want to try on their menu, and will be back. Too bad some of their specials posted outside weren't translated to English because we can be adventurous and ordered those. This is a Burmese place that opened not long ago! It's under new management and does not have Japanese food anymore (they did before). I was able to share a bunch of dishes amongst ten adults. Here is what we ordered (to the best of my memory): -mutton biryani $17.99 - so good!! Get this!! -khao soi tote $11.99 - This was very good. We may have gotten two orders of this. -royal tea leaf salad $13.99 - This was my personal favorite. I absolutely love all the flavors and textures. I would get this again and again. -fish cake salad $12.99 - This was popular in the group, but I enjoyed the tea leaf salad more. -fried tofu - eh, I could skip this. -noodle with pork (I don't know the name, but the meat balls were tasty) The server dude was real kind. The menu seemed eclectic with dishes from several Asian cultures-- many Japanese dishes, Indian prata & curry, and even Burmese mohinga soup. The boss said that the menu is comprised of dishes that they eat at home. I had the sashimi salad ($15). It wasn't huge but a good size with a minty dressing (on the side) and three types of sashimi. Quite tasty. Steady flow of customers eating in and taking out. About 6-7 tables for 4 pax each. Simply decorated, but something seemed to be missing. I had my very first visit at Shwe Taung last weekend on April 6th. Going into the restaurant, I loved the family ran vibe it gave off--immediately leading me to think that the food was going to be amazing. The server greeted us as soon as we walked through the door. He gave us great recommendations for drinks and for food and even let us in on a little secret that the beef was just made. So of course we decided to take his recommendation. We got the Beef Fried Rice which came with a little cup of soup. Flavors exploded in my mouth with each bite. Such tender beef with a kick of spice. Definitely a 10/10. Really fantastic new family owned spot - excellent service, lovely owners, great vibes, fresh sushi and sashimi, and unique Burmese dishes to try!! We had a great first experience. We had a quiet late lunch - ordered a few things off their rotating specials menu - the Baked Salmon Roll and the Paratha. We also got a Salmon Sashimi Bowl and their unique Mohinga to share. Everything was fresh and homemade and delicious! The Baked Salmon roll has crab, avocado, and cream cheese in with baked salmon and sauces out and it was fabulous! The Paratha was my fave dish we tried - it's an Indian flatbread that comes with a potato curry and it's SO flavorful and smooth - I loved the flavor combo and especially loved the texture of the flatbread. I'll definitely be back for more of this! The Salmon Sashimi Bowl comes with rice, sliced avocado and a salad with nice ginger type dressing. Everything is so fresh and good quality! Their signature dish is a Burmese Mohinga which is a type of fish soup with catfish, egg, vermicelli noodle and topped with a fish cake. It was my first time trying this dish and the owner did warn me that it's got a strong fish sauce in it - and it does but it's good. The texture is nice as well - I definitely think it's an acquired taste but it's good if you like a moderate fish sauce type flavor and the catfish was good too. The restaurant is very clean and welcoming. Their patio seating is super nice and shaded. There are a small number of parking spaces out front and lots of street parking around as well. Great location right in Arcadia off a Main Street. We had a nice chat with the owners who just moved here from Burma - super nice family!! We loved meeting them and had a great first visit! The take out portion is a little small but the flavor and freshness is so on point. Always love their sashimi salad! Their sashimi pieces are pretty big slices and everytime, it was always fresh. Salad comes with avocado on top of a bed of greens. Their salad dressing is light which is another thing great about the salad. It's a delicious and healthy option. I've also gotten their mohinga and samosas and both are very unique and flavorful. Their samosa seems to only be available on weekends I believe. It's crispy and super flavorful with the potatos and curry inside. The mohinga is a really unique dish to me. My friend and I stopped by so she could try the traditional foods for the first time and she was not disappointed. A spot with a unique mix of Japanese and Burmese food! Shwe Taung has been open for about 1 month or so and located about 2 blocks south of the 210 freeway. FOOD: Tea Leaf Salad- a very flavorful dish filled with savory and tang taste. The taste helps cut some of the stronger flavors or compliment some of the not super flavorful dishes. Coconut Chicken Khao Soi with noodles- the curry is on the light side and tasted diluted. Typically, this Khao soi is thicker and more fragrant. The chicken was a bit sparse too and could use bigger pieces to give texture. Mutton Briyani- tendor mutton meat and good flavor served with rice. The dish also includes 3 side dishes and a soup. PRICE: The price is fair for the specialty cuisine and serving size. AMBIANCE: Open and orderly table with all the utensils organized in a box with cover to keep clean. PARKING: Small lot out front and street parking. Around dinner time on a Friday, we were able to find a parking spot quickly. SERVICE: Friendly and great service. Loved that they were open to feedback on their food and checked in with our table several times. Overall had a good experience, I'd recommend some adjustments to the Khao Soi. The curry base can make the world of difference for that dish. We'll give it a bit more time and be back to try more dishes. Delicious and friendly establishment! My mom grew up in Burma (Myanmar) and she approved. She actually couldn't wait to recommend the restaurant to her Burmese friends. We ordered the golden tofu salad, samosa salad, chicken curry with parantha, and chicken khao soi. All the dishes were very tasty, reasonably priced, and packed with flavor! The most authentic Burmese food I've had not just in LA, but across all of California (I've tried a lot of Burmese restaurants in the Bay Area ). We had: - Tea leaf salad - Shan noodles - Khao soi - Paratha with beef All 4 dishes were excellent! I could really taste the unique flavor profile and native spices in each dish. Appreciate if they can manage their time better for to-go orders. The wait time is way too long even with phone order ahead of 20 minutes and was told ready in 5 to 10 minutes. Still need to wait almost 30 minutes upon arrival. I can understand they may want to control costs with fewer staff but just make it difficult for customers that have time constraints. In addition, is best to separate pack the chili in a little container instead of put it with the food even was in the corner of the container. And it is mandatory that you get the tea leaf salad, the eggplant was also super tasty, we also had this bright coconut/noodle/deep fried cucumber dish that was super unique and had umami up the wazooo (another highly technical/foodie term). And the vibe is homey, clean and vey friendly. The portions are a bit small, but I think that's just a sign of how "moreish" (see Paul Hollywood on The Great British Baking Show) the food really is. You just want more and more!
