My favorite bento spot I come here at least once a week !!! It's not all you can eat but it hits the spot and is satisfying. Has everything I want in a Japanese restaurant .

Decided to try a new sushi restaurant in the Monrovia area! Kiku Sushi is a little hole in the wall that I would definitely recommend. I will say that they have quite a big menu and it was hard to select food, but it does give you a lot of options! I got the dinner combination with sashimi, the Philadelphia roll, and spicy tuna roll. My fiancé got a variety of sushi as well. It's funny because he rates sushi restaurants depending on how good their salmon and tuna are. He really loved the salmon but he found the tuna was just "okay" In my opinion, the sushi is good, but it's not the greatest. It doesn't have that "melt in your mouth" factor that I look for in sushi restaurants but it's also not bad at the same time. The servers though were very attentive and I didn't have to get their attention at all. Also we got our food very quickly which was nice! I'd come back if I was in the area but I wouldn't go out of my way to make the extra drive.

I really wanted to like this spot because I live right up the street and sushi is my favorite food but I honestly just wasn't impressed. The sushi was very dry on both rolls, and it wasn't super fresh I felt. The lady who served us as well wasn't the nicest so it just made want to pack our stuff and leave sooner. I don't think I'll return any time soon but happy I got to try it out.

This gem is nestled in the Kohls/Trader Joe's shopping center right off the 210 fwy at Huntington Drive. You'd miss it if you drove by...so don't miss it! Great service. Very friendly atmosphere. The green tea is perfectly steeped and comes in a very large tea mug. You get a free refill too! Started with the BEST miso soup I've had. I know--miso is miso is miso, right? Wrong! The flavor and consistency of the broth bring a Mmmmm to your mouth! The sushi came out quick and tasted so fresh. Definitely try the cilantro roll with jalapeño. It has just enough kick to know it's in there, but doesn't overwhelm the roll so you can enjoy all the other flavors. It's a quaint spot so depending on the time of day you might have to wait a bit. There's also a sushi bar with ample seating if that's what you prefer. No matter where you sit, every seat is the best in the house! Enjoy.

Kiku has been a solid and dependable restaurant for my family for over a decade! Our family always takes visiting friends/relatives here for good quality and enjoyable grub. The dinner/lunch combo is the best deal here, recommend their short ribs, salmon shioyaki, and any of their rolls.

The chicken on the karaage was super small thin pieces, thus making it tougher and not very juicy. The rolls were decent, but did not look at all like the photos they have on the menu. The tempura was good. Service was a little slow getting the check. Overall, not a bad experience, but not perfect.

Wanted to try out this sushi spot since it had great reviews. Unfortunately, the fish was not up to par. The quality didn't taste fresh - was very fishy and seemed "dirty." The edamame was dry. The dragon roll was alright. Very disappointing.

**Rating this experience with a small child** Here we are on another weekly outing with my 4 year old. This time we gave Kiku Sushi a try. Unfortunately my son gave it a thumbs down and said he doesn't want to come back :( But I must say, it's definitely not the worse place we've been to. This place was decent. Interior was cozy. Service was friendly. Food came out fast. I guess our complaint was the quality of the food. We've been to a lot of strip-mall sushi spots (and my expectations are never high), some better than others, so we have a bit to compare. I ordered the chirashi which was a bit...odd... the fish cut was too thick and it tasted very bland. I didn't eat it all. The chicken karage was a bit chewy and it tasted like the oil has been used a few times (to be expected I guess). My son give it a thumbs down on the cucumber rolls. This tasted like dirt. Also, the authentic cucumber rolls (kappa-maki) are made with one slice of cucumber, not a bunch of shredded cucumber, which makes it taste watery. It was so bad that we returned it and got it taken off the bill. The best part was the chocolate macaroon ice cream. I debated between 2 or 3 stars, but gave it 3 because of the friendly service, and that our server didn't hesitate when I asked to remove the cucumber roll. I do wish they cleaned our table after we were done, so we didn't have to stare at dirty dishes while we ate the macaroon and paid the bill. Unfortunately we won't be back.

Parking can be tight during busy hours, and phone service felt a little rushed during dinner time. Togo orders must be ordered online. We ordered takeout from Sushi Kisen after craving sushi, and it ended up being much more filling than expected. The premium chirashi dinner comes with a generous portion of rice and a great variety of fresh sashimi, while the deluxe sushi dinner is the perfect amount for my husband. The rice is perfectly seasoned, and the fish tastes incredibly fresh. The uni stands out. It was buttery, clean, and not fishy at all, which says a lot because I normally don't order uni. The sides are also delicious and make the meal feel more complete, including pickled vegetables, acorn jelly, and steamed vegetables/sweet potato. Even though we ordered takeout, the restaurant gives off a relaxing and chill ambience that makes me want to come back and try the omakase in person. There's a small shared parking lot with several nearby shops and restaurants, so I can see parking being difficult during peak dinner hours. The lady helping us on the phone also doesn't seem very patient, although it may have just been because we called during the dinner rush. One small complaint is the packaged wasabi, which looks noticeably old and dark green compared to the bright green fresh wasabi included separately. Overall, though, the quality and freshness of the food easily stand out.

There are limited booth seating (about 4 booths), one larger table, and roughly a dozen counter seats. We were a party of 4 with another group of 3 expected at the counter, so we were told next availability would be 7pm. But the owner (also the sushi/master chef) stepped in and offered to squeeze in an extra chair for us at the bar. We happily said yes, and that pretty much set the tone for the night. The ambiance is a cute, homey Japanese-style spot. It's calm and quiet enough to actually have a conversation, which I really appreciated. The owner was also cracking jokes throughout the night and kept everyone entertained, which made the experience feel even more personal. Food highlights: * Eihire (seared stingray fin) - 9/10. Great drinking snack, just wish there was more. * Grilled Angus beef tongue - 9/10. Tender with a really good jalapeño sauce. * Hokkaido uni tray with roasted nori - 10/10. Favorite dish of the night, easily. * Chicken liver, gizzard, and hearts in sweet soy - 10/10. Super rich and flavorful. * Whole grilled seabass - 9.5/10. Perfectly cooked, but could've used more ponzu. * Sous vide + grilled duck breast - 8/10. Solid, especially with salt and hot mustard. The mashed potatoes and roasted veggies on the side were . * Deep fried eel with ponzu - 7/10. Decent, but didn't stand out compared to the other dishes. * Sashimi (amberjack, hamachi, toro, sweet shrimp) - overall great. The sweet shrimp and fried head were 10/10, but the hamachi didn't quite match the rest. Also wish they gave more ginger upfront. * Roasted 5 kinds of vegetables - 7/10. Tasty but a bit pricey for the portion. * Sea snail - the only dish we wouldn't reorder. Not bad, just not our preferred style. Service was excellent. Our server gave great recommendations, kept our water filled, and checked in often without being overbearing. This is a 5-star spot largely because of the owner. Super down to earth, funny, and clearly passionate about both the food and the experience. Parking is free in a shared lot with other businesses. It's a decent size, so should be manageable. Definitely recommend making a reservation (they only take phone reservations)... but even if you don't, there's a good chance they'll still find a way to take care of you. I'd definitely come back to try more dishes.
