The bento had a miso soup, mixed tempura, california rolls, rice, salad, and chicken teriyaki. The food was average and nothing special. What made me give this place a 4 star instead of 3 is quantity. I'm a big eater and I was very full after finishing about 80% of the food. Umebana is a pretty nice Japanese restaurant. I'm really glad it survived even with pandemic times. Service is always friendly and fast. The restaurant is always clean, there is spacious seating and the lighting is perfect (not too bright and inviting). The portion sizes are generous and the quality of food is always on point. We always get some shashimi, rolls and a bento for our family. They offer enough variety even for our littlest eater. I can truly say Umebana is kid friendly because we started coming with one kid, and now with two. They enjoy the miso soup, teriyaki chicken, tempura and California rolls the most. From our last visit, the owner was so sweet, she brought some extra tofu for our daughter to enjoy. Parking in this complex is always ample. I really have no complaints except that we don't get here as much as we'd like to. Bonus points that there's a check in offer for a $1 large Thai tea with boba. I was feeling a little basic, so I ordered a California Roll, Philadelphia Role, eel sushi and vegetable tempura. California Roll Krab meat was nicely flavored and cool touch. They were perfect mouth bites and I was very satisfied. They went great with soy sauce and wasabi, and also Siracha. Philadelphia Roll Salmon was fresh with a good portion of cream cheese. Also, perfect mouth bites. Eel Sushi One of the best eel bites I've had. They were warm, perfectly cooked and blended beautifully with the rice, as I chewed. They were also generous sizes, while not being too big to fit in your mouth in one bite. Some eel have chewy, collagen textures. I'm not sure if it's a bad job at preparing the fish, but that was no issue here. Vegetable Tempura Very nice crispy texture and nicely cooked vegetables. You order at the counter and pay, you can dine in or take it to go. They have plenty of seating which is great. Anyways, I decided to give Umebana a try and ended up making an order over the phone. I ordered: Large Beef Teriyaki Bowl, $8.95 prior to tax- My husband wanted to have some teriyaki so he picked this out. The portion size of the entree is huge and could easily feed 2-3 people. Definitely a great value for the price. I thought the beef was tasty, along with the teriyaki sauce. Salmon bowl w/ complementary miso soup, $15.95 prior to tax- I wanted fresh fish so I opted for the salmon bowl. This meal is also served with a small side of miso soup. I liked the flavor of the soup and liked that it was still nice and hot when we picked up our order and brought it home. The salmon pieces in this bowl was small but came with 11 pieces. It tasted just fine. I also liked the seaweed salad and 2 avocado slices in this bowl. The rice was perfectly cooked and seasoned. Overall, I was pretty full after eating it all and felt satisfied. -------------------------- (Total= $27.27 after tax) I was surprised when the employee who took my order told me that my order would be ready in 10 minutes. That was incredibly fast. I called around 5:08 pm and it was ready for me when I had arrived about 18 minutes later (I wasn't expecting it to be ready so quickly so I had to take care of a few things before leaving the house to go pick it up). I'm kind of disappointed that I had not tried Umebana sooner (when it was Maki Yaki, I just thought the place was okay, which is probably why I had stayed away). This Japanese gem is located in a small strip mall in Duarte. It's small and a sign outside proclaims "Grand Opening", so I'm not sure how long it's been open. There is tons of parking, and even though the restaurant itself is small with only a handful of tables, it is not crowded. To say it's not fancy would be an understatement. It is like a mom and pop joint, with mom on the cashier and waiting tables, while pop does the sushi and cleans tables. There is no table service pretty much whatsoever. You order at the counter. You have to get your own water from a pitcher and stack of plastic cups. If you order a soda, you have to get it yourself from a soda machine behind the cash register. And if you have leftovers, you have to go grab your own container from the table with the water. I think that's also where the napkins and utensils are. Mom brings the food to your table. That's about it for service, though they are friendly enough. Just wish it was a full service restaurant. Also wish they had a liquor license so they could serve sake. Japanese food just isn't the same without sake. However, there is a lot they do right. Mainly, the portions, prices, and quality. I can't speak for the sushi, as I don't eat raw fish, but the cooked food was terrific and plentiful. The boy and I had the beef and chicken teriyaki plate, paying extra for white meat chicken. It was still cheap compared to any other restaurant, which made it all the more surprising by how much food there was on the plate. It was enough to share or make two meals out of by splitting it up. The beef is nicely presented in thin slices so it gets nice and well done the way I like it. We asked for the chicken well done and charred and it was perfectly cooked. Add rice and a large tasty salad on the plate and you get a lot for your money. The same can be said for the gigantic bento boxes. The missus got the chicken teriyaki bento with white meat chicken. Once again there was a giant pile of chicken. Also non-greasy mixed tempura and plenty of it. Another giant salad and big dollop of rice, along with four pieces of California roll. You're gonna wanna open your belt by one notch before eating, cause you're gonna be stuffed. Except for the lack of sake and wishing they had full waiter service, this place is really a gem. More like 3.5 stars. You order at the register and they will bring out your food. The sushis is only okaaaay here. I've had the salmon bowl and the sashimi salad. They are not really sashimi grade sushi, but they are decent. The salmon bowl is actually half rice and half lettuce, and I'm not a fan of lettuce. Same thing with the sashimi salad, I wish they have different kinds of greens instead of just lettuce. I came here on 2 different occasions and both times my friend ordered a bento box with a protein, rice, salad, California roll and tempura. This is actually a great deal that can last 2 meals. The food was delicious, the California rolls were fresh, teriyaki chicken was delicious, the salad was crispy and fresh and the tempura was perfect. Hot, crunchy and delicious. Service was good. You have to go to counter order and pay and tip at that time. I left a 15% tip because I just ordered and had not received service yet. Net time I will tip after I eat. This place is a hidden gem in Duarte! We wanted Taisho but they were unexpectedly closed. Glad we found Umebana. Called around 545pm and they told me it would be ready in 15-20 mins. There is a huge parking lot so there was no problem finding parking during dinner rush. We ordered the Salmon and spicy tuna Chirashi and a Shrimp and vegetable tempura. Arrived at 605pm and the food was ready and hot! Took the food home and began to chow. The sushi rice was delicious, perfect balance of semi sweet and tartness. The salmon was fresh and the spicy tuna was tasty. The tempura was fried perfectly. We will definitely be coming back to try more dishes. The menu pictures on yelp are a bit dated as the prices were a bit more. It was well worth it! read more

I'd better write review now before I forget to. Here's another winner I located here from the 'City of Duarte,' which is one of the neighboring towns around Arcadia, CA. Today was the second time I visited 'Umebana,' which is an upscale Japanese restaurant. I purposefully looked up locally existing 4.5-star restaurants so my cravings would be satisfied! It worked!!!! Upon walking into the restaurant, already made me wanna stick around due to the super cute decors!!!! They played a large screen TV off one side of the walls. Staff was super friendly and welcoming. I placed my phone order as usual to save time, so when I arrived, my order was ready for pick up again. They even offer Yelp Discount upon check in here, but just show the cashier the Offer Coupon so she can apply the discount. I stuck with my usual Beef Teriyaki bento box which can't go wrong. I also tried their signature milk tea today, which was very tasty with enough tea flavors. They can customize your preferred tea style~from ice level to sugar level. I didn't have time to take a pic of my drink today but will do that next time I return. I'll be back!!!! read more

I recently visited Umebana in Duarte which use to be Maki Yaki back in the day and I must say that I was thoroughly impressed with the overall experience after all these years that I last visited. The first thing that caught my attention was the quality of the food is still the same: delicious. Every dish that I ordered was made with fresh ingredients and the flavors were simply amazing. I had the #1 Umebana Special and for that price that hasn't changed, is a steal. Please don't change the prices. You get a lot for what you pay. My plate consisted of Teriyaki chicken, rice, gyoza, veg roll, and greens. I also ordered a tiger roll to go, and its so good. I was stuffed. So I was pleasantly surprised that I didn't have to break the bank to enjoy such a delicious meal. The staff was friendly, greeting me as I walk in and saying goodbye as I was leaving. The cleanliness of the restaurant was impeccable, even though they probably opened a couple of hours ago from when I got there. I just felt very comfortable dining in a clean restaurant. Good thing they have a large television for watching sports while eating your food. Overall, I highly recommend Umebana to anyone looking for a top-notch dining experience. 10/10. We came here unexpectedly because we just needed to grab a bite to eat. We ordered tuna sashimi, a chicken plate with extra chicken, and some veggie tempura. When I'm not in the mood to wait for a table & wait service, to be around too many people, to fuss with parking, but I just want some top-quality Sushi, I come here! It is peaceful & it's a no-fuss situation. The Sushi ingredients are all top-quality, neatly put together & always delicious. I have never had a sloppy roll, or anything remotely dissatisfactory. I love their #107, the Cucumber Special, because it is rice-less! I try to omit carbs whenever possible. This roll is light, protein packed & very satisfying...with avocado :) I also really enjoy their green tea, it is pretty extraordinary, as they put brown rice in it. I kind of really love it! It's a tasty green tea too. Not too strong. I like that. So, for a no-fuss, but I demand top-notch Sushi, kinda-night, I highly recommend you give Umebana a try. It will not disappoint. A little spot in the corner of a shopping center in Monrovia. It's easy to miss because of the Wendy's stand in the front blocks the view. I always get it to go because the seating is a little too tight for a comfortable meal for a party of six. I always get the teriyaki chicken and rice. It's so much food that I eat it for two meals. I ordered a bento box combination and it was a ton of food! My order was ready to by the time I drove there, about 10 minutes or so, was a very easy process. All the food was vert hot and crunchy even when I got it home. They supplied all of the sauces, condiments, utensils, everything you would need to enjoy your meal.
