I reviewed this place 10 years ago. Under new management and have to report service and food quality still deserves a 5 star rating. The old menu had the incredible Snowcorn roll but you can get cream cheese added to any roll so my baked lobster roll tasted the same. Love this little neighborhood spot. Downtown Azusa still needs mom and pop type joints. I hope some new businesses can move in and add variety. Sawa has the Sushi option locked down. read more

Unfortunately, the food here has not met the mark. I came in at 6:40pm on March 7th, 2026 to only 2 other tables and while the service has been good, the food is to be desired... I ordered 1 hand roll, 2 appetizers, and 2 rolls. I have never seen chicken karage not be crispy ours was almost wet for some reason. This appetizer arrived at 7:10. My rolls arrived at 7:40 and the salmon on them was icy cold. The table next to us received their salmon frozen... It baffles me that the sushi "chef" had managed to cut the salmon and fail to realize that it was frozen. I've spent so much time waiting for my last item (appetizer) to arrive that I figured I would write out the review now. This place is in the area and I figured I would give it a try. This place recently changed management and I'm so sad that they did. The rolls were poorly made - salmon hand roll missing cucumbers, a baked roll they forgot to bake. The appetizer sampler platter was so sad looking and a scallop sushi that tasted like soap. The ambiance remained but the food is sub par. Plus - service was good. If you are looking for premium fresh tasting sushi, this is the place. I ordered the yellowtail sashimi that came with the yuzu sauce and it was by far the best I have had. The baked scallop roll was also delicious. Compared to other places around, it is a little more expensive but the quality is worth it. The place is quaint and offers tv's to watch games. Easily my sushi stop as I sometimes work in the area! The yellowtail jalapeño roll is DELICIOUS and such good value/quality with alot of sushi - totally worth the higher premium. The chicken karage is not the typical crispy type but it's so juicy and tender. The miso soup is delicious, surprised to find out it's made in house which really reminds me of food growing up. This place is sad. If allowed I'd give it ZERO STARS. From the servers to the man who prepares the sushi rolls and the rolls themselves. I was excited to try this place out. They have a strict serving schedule. I finally waltzed in. The vibe is not a vibe. It's kinda depressing. I ordered a spicy tuna roll for starters and to try it out. The man preparing the rolls had the absolute worst demeanor. I don't like to judge a book by its cover. So I sat there and watched him prepare my roll. I sat at the sushi bar. I saw this man preparing my one roll. He seemed the most unhappiest sushi roll maker I've ever encountered in my life. So, of course, my sushi roll was just as sad as the restaurant, the servers and this man behind the sushi counter. I got up, started walking out, and I said: "I'm not eating that sad sushi roll." The man behind the sushi bar started yelling at me in his language. This spicy tuna sushi roll was the most saddest, slapped together roll I've ever seen. I wasn't going to eat that nor pay for it. I walked out and let the man continue to verbally abuse me in his own language. I would never recommend a place like this. Specially if the attitude is the worst. Five stars all around. From the moment we sat down, the service was warm, attentive, and genuinely welcoming without ever feeling overbearing. Everything came out at a great pace. The food was the real highlight. The uni was incredibly fresh and rich, easily one of the best bites of the night. What really surprised me, though, was the tiramisu. I didn't expect it to stand out as much as it did, but it was perfectly balanced, not too sweet, and an ideal way to end the meal. Got this spot thru Door Dash earlier this week to try a new place - not impressed, unfortunately. While the bento box was a good price (~17 for 3 items, and comes with miso soup, salad, and rice), there was just no flavor to anything. You can see from the pic that the salmon portion was maybe 1/3 of what I'd expect a dinner portion to be. I did like how it was seared, but I could barely taste the teriyaki flavor. The rolls were really bland. I'd expect some flavor for a spicy tuna roll, but there was no kick, and no flavor. We tried this place because the prices were good, so 3/5 just for good prices, but wouldn't come here again. read more

**Rating with small child** Not sure what all of these high ratings are talking about. Maybe we came on the wrong day? Think I'm being generous with a 3-star, but I was having a nice day with my kid so I'll give them that. I guess the people of Azusa consider this a high rating. We got there right when they opened for dinner, so we were the only guests there. My son and I searched high and low on the menu for chicken karage and cucumber rolls, but it was nowhere to be found. When I asked the waitress, she barely spoke English and had no clue about the menu. Finally we figured out that this place has no chicken karage, so we settled on the chicken teriyaki, which turned out alright. My kid's tamago sushi arrived broken, but he didn't seem to care at all as he was hungry! I ordered the sushi combo A, which was nothing to rave about. I found it strange that they gave me two pieces of maguro tuna. It's like they had nothing else to serve, so they gave me two of it. The slices were also extremely stingy and rice was too small. Again, we were the only guests there and the sushi chef kept forgetting to bring out stuff. He completely forgot about the cucumber roll, and when I asked him for it, he was like "ohhh!!" and brought out thinly sliced cucumbers rolled up in a roll. Hmm cucumber rolls are supposed to be one thicker piece of cucumber, not many thin slices, but whatever. And then I asked about my miso soup that came with my sushi combo, and again he was like "ohhh!" And brought out lukewarm soup with two very crumbly pieces of tofu... I wasn't looking for life-changing sushi here, more like a casual sushi dinner with my 5 year old. But don't expect this place to be anywhere close to authentic Japanese food. read more

My husband and I came here for lunch on a Friday. Sushi Sawa is located right in the heart of downtown Azusa. Conveniently, there's a small parking lot right next to the restaurant. We mainly came here to try their chirashi bowl. I'm not sure if it was because we came too early in the day (around noon) when the restaurant just opened, or if it was a fluke. But the fish on our chirashi bowl was subpar. Tuna and salmon were both tasteless and flaky... the escolar ended up being the best in the bowl, which is rare. read more

Sushi Sawa is a small sushi restuarant located in downtown Azusa. It has a decent location, with limited parking nearby. The staff is friendly enough. The 3 times I went were for all to-go. All 3 times, the fish is just.... not good. I am not sure exactly how to put it. The fish is fresh, BUT the fish is NOT GOOD SUSHI fish. The third time, I ordered Pink lady and Boston roll. Took about 15-20 minutes to make, so I called in advanced for pickup. The pink lady was alright, nothing too special, but it is tasty and filling. The boston roll... god awful fish, it was TOUGH and SINEWY. I paid over 15$ for this roll for tough and sinewy fish? No thanks. It's really unfortunate that the Sushi Sawa is not up there in terms of quality food. it's one of the few sushi places nearby and seeing how lazy that I am, I really wish they were better. read more

We ordered salmon sashimi, pink lady (no carb), beef teriyaki, mix tempura, and yellowtail collar. Al the food was well seasoned and flavorful. None of the cooked dishes were over or under cooked.
