Al 34 was a restaurant recommended by our hotel. It is near the Spanish Steps, on a busy street and close to lots of high-end shopping: Louis Vuitton, Dior, Tiffany's, Chanel, etc. We had a Friday nite 8:30 reservation (made that afternoon) and was seated near the entrance door, inside. It is a large restaurant and was full of lively patrons. The indoor decor is warm and inviting. The first thing I noticed was the camaraderie between the waitstaff - everyone seemed to get along, helped each other and were having fun. We had 2 wonderful Filipino waiters. One had the same Ray-Ban meta glasses as my husband, which they bonded over. We ordered the bombolotti carbonara and lasagna-both delicious. For the mains, grilled Turbot (which was perfectly de-boned tableside) and meatballs w/ mashed potatoes. While the waiter was de-boning the fish, the song "Take Me Home, Country Roads" by John Denver came on overhead. My husband and I both looked at each other and smiled, thinking WTH?! I asked the waiter, "did we tell you we were from West Virginia?" and he smiled and shook his head. But later confessed, he played it for us (I guess we did tell him, lol). It made our night. Rome was the last city in our multi-city 12 day tour and we loved every minute but we were looking forward to going home. Hearing "Country Roads" at a popular and busy restaurant a block away from the Spanish Steps blew our minds. A young couple sat next to us for a quick snack, I asked her what she ordered (it looked delicious) and she said "Im from a different part of Italy but come here just for their artichokes". A few minutes later, I saw a plate full of artichokes pass by, being brought to a table outside. They made my mouth water. Al 34 was one of our favorite restaurants in Italy -- wonderful food (extensive menu), very lively with a mixed crowd (lots of Asians, English speakers and native Italians). This is an excellent restaurant located in Rome. Right off the main road that is their Rodeo drive, is this ultra small but very affordable place. After visiting all their pose boutiques, we received 2 recommendations to go here for amazing food at an affordable price. The food selection is what you can normally think of in Rome. This is the first place that I saw, which had veal as Saobuco with garlic mashed potatoes. And it was better than it sounded. We also had vodka penne - which was very well done. It's a 5 star meal, if not for the service. The waiter was horrible. There were some very demanding families there and he was clearly upset by them. The food is outstanding and the staff is very good to us. Though not a critic, I am a food snob. I enjoy flavorful food with fresh ingredients, prepared as described and served with pleasure. 34 delivers such. If you'd prefer a little this/that, staff does not seem to mind if they are not overly busy. If they are, kindly under. The staff is attentive. I've had their Tiramisu and enjoyed it very much. I dislike coffee but they make a rich strong espresso, which I can welcome if I need shot. A little dunk of their Italian cookies add to my experience. I personally prefer the warm welcoming decor of the smaller room. It feels more intimate and a little like my old relative's home. I enjoy that. We are a large group that often dines there either a few of us at a time or we later bring other colleague friends who choose to dine with us. I recently ate at 34 for my second time and just like the first time, it was wonderful through and through. I'm from Chicago but always make a point to visit 34 when I'm in Rome and it never disappoints. I ordered the spinach and ricotta ravioli and it was truly out of this world. We visited Italy for one week and were so excited to try Ristorante Al 34 after being recommended the restaurant by our hotel concierge and also one of our friends that lives in Rome heard great things about it from their local friends as well. I made reservations with the restaurant over Instagram, and they were so helpful and accommodating with the request and responded very quickly - even with changes in our party size along the way as our friends we were meeting brought extra people as well. When we arrived for our reservation time, they welcomed us warmly and had our table ready upon arrival. We started with a bottle of wine - at the most, the nicest bottle of wine I believe was 40 euros. We selected a red wine for 30 euros and it was superb! We ordered a variety of appetizers, ranging in price up to 20 euros. We also ordered 3 different pastas and they split up the pastas for us in the kitchen to where we could all try different pastas on a big plate. It was a great way to try the various pastas! The pasta dishes ranged in price up to 15 euros. They all were outstanding and probably the best pasta I ever had. Came here for my daughter's birthday. It was a year in the planning. The owner that took our reservations couldn't have been nicer. They make you feel special. Food, atmosphere, services was excellent. Wonderful meal. The pasta was superb particularly the baked gnocchi with truffle. I had a lamb shank with potatoes. House wine was great. Tiramisu was wonderful as well. My only complain, the server suggested a tip. Tipping isn't common in Italy. If you're an American don't start it. The waiters get a full wage. My husband and I came to this wonderful restaurant to celebrate our 5 year anniversary. We both felt like we couldn't have picked a better place. I had sent an email to the restaurant for a reservation and they were so helpful. Upon arrival, we were greeted and seated right away. I had mentioned we were celebrating our anniversary and they gave us two flutes of wonderful champagne as soon as we sat down. The attentiveness of the wait staff has been the best we've experienced in a very long time. Our cocktails we ordered were both delicious and the slice octopus appetizer was very fresh and tasteful. My husband and I shared the lobster linguine, which was so much better than I already expected. I love the flavor of the pasta, and the lobster was cooked perfectly. The best gnocchi I've had in my LIFE!! We stopped here after a tour at the museo borghese. We saw it recommended by the Euro Trotter on YouTube...and let me tell you, this place did not disappoint!! We ordered the Braseola and sauté mussels to start as the apps, absolutely delicious! Then we followed that up with three pasta dishes that we shared amongst ourselves: pumpkin gnocchi in creamy Castelmagno cheese sauce, bomobolotti Carbonara, Strascinati with Truffle and Bacon. These three were ABSOLUTELY AMAZING!! Our waiter was top shelf quality...the best of the best in his atentativeness and recommendations. I give this place easily 5 stars!! One thing to keep in mind, we did not have reservations, but we were able to secure a table around 6pm inside...if you want to eat outside good luck without reservations...folks were told it would be impossible to sit outside without a reservation. read more

Come to 34 for all of the classics. They have a large menu with tons of pastas, meats, seafoods and anything else that you could want. The restaurant is large and they have a very big section of outdoor seating. They are located on a super cute cobblestone side street and it's just the greatest ambiance for dining outdoors. Unsurprisingly, it was packed and we were able to grab one of the last outdoor seats. You might want to consider making a reservation in advance, if you can. Because the restaurant is so busy service was a bit slow. A ginormous carafe of cheap house wine should help. Plus, you'll probably need a bit of time to decide what you'd like to order anyhow. I had a very simple dish of paccheri with fresh mozz, tomatoes and basil. You don't see paccheri often on menus at home, so I was excited to try this shape of pasta. Though the dish was simple it was well-prepared and did not disappoint. The brought my husband out the wrong type of gnocchi dish and were extremely apologetic about it. The pumpkin gnocchi and the baked gnocchi are very different, so I'm glad that they were able to swap it out. The baked version was extremely rich and topped with so much cream and cheese, while the pumpkin dish was topped with a much lighter cream sauce and chopped pistachios. I also ordered a side of fried artichoke, but this didn't wow me. It tasted more like 'fried' than 'artichoke' - I'd suggest going for the grilled version. 34 has affordable and delicious classic Italian dishes, and this was a great last dinner in Italy. read more

We were incredibly lucky to find this small but cozy restaurant near the Spanish Steps. We went during lunch rush hour but got seated right away inside. The bread was already there for us and we started immediately. We ordered the two dishes of pasta with seafood (Gnocchi with prawn and sweet red peppers, & Tonnarelli with scampi shrimps and radicchio), two dishes of lamb (Lamb Roman style, & Grilled spring lamb) and a dessert. The pasta dishes were absolutely wonderful with amazing sauces and enough seafoods. Both of the lamb dishes were also very tasty with great meat and vegetables. Wow, easily the best traditional Italian cuisine I've had yet and our top meal from our recent trip to Rome and Tuscany. Ristorante "Al 34" is a short walk away from the Spanish steps and upon entering, you feel like you've walked into an Italian family's home. Cozy and rustic through and through. Among the house-made pastas, my wife and I opted for the Bombolotti alla carbonara, Tonnarelli cacio e pepe and the very unique Strascinati with truffle and bacon. Holy shizzle these were phenomenal! We'd developed a pretty solid feel for 'carbonara' and 'cacio e pepe' as we specifically sought them out at a nearly every restaurant we dined at in Rome. 34 undoubtedly executed them the best as we were blown away by the exquisite balance in the rich flavors and creamy texture. The strascinati was also fantastic for its wonderfully savory and earthy flavors. For second courses, we shared a lamb shank dish whose exact name escapes me...but DAMN that meat was good! Excellent braising and seasoning made for one tenderricious mouthful after another. Service was friendly and attentive as well and we thoroughly enjoyed the firmly tannic Dolcetto recommended to us for pairing. Buon appetito! read more

34 has been owned by the same family since 1968. The night we ate there, we met the owner, her son and her grandson. The chef at one of our favorite restaurants at home told us 34 was a great choice in the Spanish Steps area...he didn't steer us wrong! Just steps from our hotel, 34 is in a lively area of cafes and restaurants around the Piazza Spagna. They have outdoor tables as well as seating inside. The staff is friendly and knowledgable. Menus are available in several languages. While filled with lots of tourists, we noted many locals as well. Lots of the tables seemed to be on a first name basis with the owners. Our waiter was very nice, and all the staff seemed to be enjoying themselves. We started with the mussels (very good) and the stuffed squash blossums (excellent!). For pasta, I had the paccheri bufalo, al dente pasta in a pomodoro sauce with buffalo mozzarela, cherry tomatoes and goat cheese (delicious). My wife had a spicy penne with eggplant (very good, but not as spicy as we liked, even tho she specified "spicier the better"). I had a segunda of the rabbit in vineger and olives that was very good. We shared a caraffe of the house red wine (excellent, and only €11 for a litre!). The next time we are in Rome, I know I will be back. read more

Stopped by today for lunch and it was DELICIOUS! I had the Ravioli 34 (cheese ravioli with a white cream sauce that contains herbs and pine nuts). Sprinkled a little Parmesan cheese on top at the suggestion of our waiter and he was right...it added more depth to the dish. I enjoyed every last bite!!!!
