I wanted something local, authentic, and no frills for my birthday dinner in Rome and found this place with countless positive reviews. We made a reservation online, arrived about 20 minutes early, and they gladly sat us right down. While we were there we noticed plenty of locals eating, chatting with the servers in Italian, and having a blast, which is always a green flag. The menu leans traditional Roman; extensive, with plenty of pasta, meats, and fish. The supplì classico and the cacio e pepe one were both phenomenal. We also had the all'amatriciana and carbonara, and both were divine. After a week traveling through Europe, my husband said this was his favorite meal and restaurant of the trip. It was a top one for me too. We also ordered the oxtail; delicious, but I'm not sure I'd get it again since you get two pieces that are mostly bone. I know that's just how oxtail is, but I was expecting a little more. The panna cotta for dessert was a great choice too. Service was fine, nothing to write home about, but honestly I appreciated how rough around the edges it was. They kept it real; don't come expecting fancy restaurant service. This is a place you go to for authentic food and flavors. We sat outside on the sidewalk, great for people watching, though they had plenty of space inside and even multiple floors. Review # 1200 After some shopping on the Via cola Di Riemzo, we were ready for lunch. This spot was a Yelp find. We arrived just before they opened at 12:30. We asked for a table outside and the kind lady asked us if we had a reservation (oh oh). We didn't. No problem as we took our pick of one of the tables. Two levels inside with a small Bar in the back. Before we knew it, outside seating was full and inside also filled up-a good sign. We ordered a liter (ended up being too much but when in Rome...) of their house Red and enjoyed it. For starters, we ordered the Fried Artichokes (thick breading and will order the Roman style with garlic/vinegar next time), fried Zucchini and Suppli-Cacio Pepe. The Suppli was delicious and was enjoyed the most. For main, it was Pasta Carbonara (Guanciale )-Proper carbonara and the streak of not having a bad version of this dish in Rome continues. The sliced Beef with mushrooms was also delicious -super tender and thin pieces of beef (medium rare as requested). We asked if the Tiramisu was house-made. Our server answered, "yes, and I am the one who makes it." How could we not order after that?! One of the best Tiramisus we've had. Perfect balance of coffee dipped lady fingers with cream-delicious! On our last night in Rome, we wanted to dine at an intimate restaurant located close to our apartment in Prati. Already depressed knowing we were returning to the cold and fearful Minneapolis, we spent the day packing and wandering Prati. After drowning our sorrows at a few cocktail emporiums in the early evening, we walked into Su e Giu without a reservation close to 9:30. The two guys working the front showed us to a table, and we proceeded to have a perfect last night meal. Our appetizers and pastas were great, service was friendly, and I spent time reflecting on how wonderful Rome is, rather than thinking about our return to the fractured States. Really enjoyed our dinner here. The server was great gave good recommendations and even brought us a complimentary zucchini appetizer. We shared the fried calamari and anchovy appetizer, which tasted fresh. I had the lasagna and it was excellent. My wife got the ravioli and really liked it she said it was a unique and tasty dish. For dessert we shared the Crème Catalana. The server brought it out and torched the sugar right at the table, which was fun to watch and tasted perfect. Great food and genuinely exceptional service. We had a delightful dinner for our family's last full night in Rome. When we arrived as the restaurant opened at 7:30 (with a reservation), the place had a couple of other diners, but within minutes after we got there the place was full and other parties were being turned away. It's a small dining room with only a few tables; the kitchen is on another floors and the meals arrive (and the used dishes returned to the kitchen) by dumbwaiter (a process that the kids enjoyed watching), The host, who introduced himself as Richard, suggested that we begin with a collection of fried starters -- suppli both with red sauce and cacio e pepe; fried sage; and fried artichokes. These were interesting. My wife also ordered a starter of artichoke which was incredibly tended, much more so than the other artichokes we have had in Rome and Naples. The host had a number of other recommendations from the menu, several of which we followed. Service was very friendly and gracious throughout -- chatty even. It was very sweet. Then it was on to the pasta dishes. The grandchildren had gnocchi, ravioli stuffed with sage and butter, and manicotti with red sauce. I chose the pasta alla su e giu (with sausage, pecorino and red sauce, topped with a generous serving of arugula, while my wife chose the same ravioli that our granddaughter had chosen. Our daughter-in-law chose pasta alla gricia, with pecorino as well as slivers of bacon and fried artichoke, while Sam chose the pumpkin soup, which in addition to being delicious was a very large portion, almost more than he could handle My son and I also chose main dishes -- he the pasta alla gricia, and me the lamb cacciatora. I had assumed it would come with a red sauce, like the chicken cacciatora to which I am accustomed in the US, but instead it was a slightly sweet brownish gravy. The lamb was unbelievably tender (if a bit fatty and bony), and very delicious We would have stayed for dessert, but we were stuffed and we needed to get the children home to bed (they fly back to Zanzibar tomorrow evening). But the host would not allow us to leave without dessert -- we were gifted with a small bag of biscuits, which he said had been made with wine, flour, sugar and X. Cacio e Pepe - the signature Roma dish was a perfect balance of cheese & pepper just lightly dressing the al dente pasta, so well made. Eggplant Parmigiano- Not the american version but a more traditional take which is probably how it suppose to be as it is tender slices of saute eggplant that melted in your mouth as it paired with a light but rich tomato & garlic sauce and topped with a dusting of mozarella. Oxtail Osso buco- wow! by far the best dish of the trip....braised fork tender falling off the bone rendered fat oxtail of goodness bathing in a home made tomato sauce pool of perfection! This evening Mary and I had a wonderful dinner at Sue e Gui Cucina Romana in the Prati district of Rome. Daniel, the son of the chef and part owner was gracious and conversational and made great recommendations for our dinner. We started with a crispy sage leaf appetizer made simply with sage leaves lightly battered and fried in olive oil. Yummy! All of the pasta is made fresh and Mary selected Ravioli ricotta e Spinach while I selected Saltimbocca alla romana (Veal slices in Roman style) and both dishes were delicious. After dinner we opted out of dessert, but Daniel brought a treat to the table consisting of two sugar coated cookies and suggested we soaking them in our wine as a final treat. They were Wonderful! So far one of the best meals we have had in Rome. We would both highly recommend this restaurant, both for the family atmosphere and the great food. We hope to return before leaving Rome. read more

We got there as they were opening. Ordered bruschetta and then waited for almost an hour in a hot restaurant for our main dishes. We watched a number of parties (at least 5) get their dishes before us and very quickly. Just as we were asking for the check to pay for the bruschetta and leave they said the food was coming. When I asked why it was taking so long they said it's because the food for the others were "pre-orders from the offices" and our had to be made fresh. The most unfortunate part is the food was not that great. We got the Spaghetti with meatballs for the kids, the Bucatini, Lasagna and Spaghetti Carbonara. All of the dishes were too salty and definitely not worth the wait. This is my go to restaurant when in Roma, because it is not far from the area in which I visit, but also it is very delicious!! I remember visiting Su e Gui years ago and learned that the restaurant is a family owned restaurant. The staff is always very efficient, friendly, and always provide a great service. The main area is pretty tight to sit in (small dining area), but the downstairs area is a bit more spacious with about 4-5 extra tables. Upon opening you can expect the restaurant to already be pretty full so definitely have a back up plan. I have ordered many dishes here, but my go to is typically the seafood risotto because I am never disappointed. Su e Giù literally means up and down in Italian. This cute little restaurant in a quiet Italian neighborhood near the Vatican has 3 levels, though my favorite is upstairs. If you get there early enough ask for the table upstairs that overlooks the main dining floor. Daniel, the owner, is warm and welcoming to all that visit. I have been going to this restaurant for years because Daniel is so friendly, and the food is great. His wife makes all the dishes and is equally as warm and friendly as her husband. The food can best be described as home cooking, delicious home cooking - the kind of meals grandma would make. The toasted bread with sun dried tomatoes is good but the real star is the sausage that is served with this appetizer. Honestly, it does not look like much when it arrives, but this sausage is soaked in wine for a minimum of 1 hour. It is absolutely delicious, cut into small pieces and eaten with the bread and sun-dried tomato. A true surprise! Their soups are hearty and homey and served piping hot for those of us that think that the hotter the soup the better it is. For my main meal I just wanted simple pasta, so Daniel brought me spaghetti with red sauce topped with fresh basil. It was just the right amount and perfect with some of their grated parmesan cheese. The food was beyond fabulous. The first night we had eggplant and ravioli. The meal was amazing and we talked about it the whole next day and decided we were not going to find anything better so we went back. We had appetizers and my wife had the eggplant and I had the pork shank dinner. I took Ricardo's suggestion and it was delicious. We had the tiramisu for dessert which is a must. We had an amazing meal and created a great memory with this small family restaurant cranking out homemade family meals with the nicest service. One of our friends ordered the lamb which was very good. My husbands pasta tasted delicious. It was the pasta with porcini mushrooms! We will definitely be back when we are in Rome. Rome is the home of Carbonara pasta, and Su e Giu know their carbonara! BTW it's my fave kind of pasta. It's a small restaurant which is the kind of place you want to choose in Italy. Fresh and homemade everything: breads, pastas, desserts. This was one of the best meals I had in Italy. We were a group of 13. Others selected Cacio e Pepe, lasagna, pasta bolognese. This was one of our favorite meals in Rome! It was close to our hotel near the Vatican and had a cozy feel with outdoor seating in what seemed like a residential area. It is a family run business. The food is cooked by the father who is in his 80s and has run restaurants in his Rome his whole career and the son and his wife were our servers. They spent a lot of time bringing out special treats for everyone to try and chatting with customers and the pasta was the classic Roman fare we were looking for. It is small inside with some outdoor seating as well, and it looked like it may have an upstairs. We saw many businesspeople coming in for lunch. I had the Risotto Alla Pescatore, or seafood risotto. It was perfectly prepared and chock full of fresh seafood including clams, mussels, calamari, and some type of shell-on shrimp. The portion was huge but I ate the whole thing!
