Our kind waiter bright over water, bread and breadsticks. No olive oil, no butter just dry. For our lunch I decided on the cacio e Pepe and Lisa opted for the ragú. Both were delicious. For dessert we were told the owners mom made lemon cake so that was a no brainer. It was fabulous and paired well with espresso. Our waiter also brought us Amaro. It's a licorice like liqueur enjoyed as a digestif. Definitely an acquired taste that reminded me of Aguardiente. At the recommendation of our Vatican tour guide, we visited for an impromptu lunch on a Friday afternoon. Lorrisa ordered the cacio e Pepe and I ordered the Spaghetti all' amatriciana. We were both satisfied with our selections. Our meals started with bread service, both fresh bread and packaged breadsticks. We didn't receive any olive oil which might be the norm in Italy. For dessert, we opted for a slice of their featured lemon torta. It was enjoyable and we paired it with espresso. Finally, our server offered us a popular digestivi - Amaro. It reminded me of Jägermeister and I wasn't a fan. But I appreciated the hospitality and kindness of his gesture. In summary, we left content and with full bellies. The food was inconsistent. My food was terrible, while my husband's food was good. My ravioli had way too much tomato sauce, and was very acidic. The ravioli's themselves didn't have much cheese and spinach filling. The ravioli was 2/10 for me. My husband's carbonara he enjoyed and said it had good flavor. That was 8/10 for him. And the fruit dessert I ordered was lame. It tasted like a dessert for a child. You know those DOLE fruit cups for children that have a syrup in them? That's what it tasted like with some chopped fruit in it. Terrible. That dessert was crap. 1/10 for that. Our experience was split on the food. The service was not good. We were seated and sat there for 10 minutes with no water or anything. Waited and waited then flagged a server down for water. And he said "are you ready to order now?" Ready to order... You haven't even come over to us to say hi or introduce yourself as our waiter. You haven't brought us water or anything to drink.... What the actual eff dude. Terrible service. We watched this guy walk past us multiple times to serve the locals. But he ignored us. I get it, we are tourists, but wow the neglect was real. And the priority was given to locals and Italians. Even once he brought our food, he never came over to check on us. Didn't come by to see if we needed anything. We had to flag him down for the check. During our stay in Rome, we had dinner here on four of those eight days. Didn't know this place existed until our host recommended it to us. Was apprehensive at first having a business card of a restaurant handed out to you during check-in, but we did ask for a nice authentic Italian bistro. And that's what we got. It is located at a dimly lit corner of Borgo S. Angelo and Vicolo del Campanile, one wouldn't pay attention to this place at all. Our first dinner here was us getting in past 7PM without a reservation. The guy who greeted us first had to ask the servers if there was space for us. One of the waiters came to us and asked us if we'll be done by 9 pm. We affirmed, of course. Now, at this time, there were probably a lot of empty tables and we were wondering what the fuss was with us getting out at 9. We learned later that this place gets packed real fast and that patrons include a lot of locals. Oh, we also understood how Italians eat dinner. Slow, a lot of talking and with multiple courses. Needless to say after getting in without reservations for two more times, we had to do one on our last night, which was a Friday. The food and drinks were consistently perfect from day 1. Hit the spot every time, whether we were in for supper or cocktails. We learned that pizzas don't get sliced in Italy (unless it's takeaway), the Negroni and Americano taste kinda the same and a Limoncello is best served after dinner. read more

This place was our most favorite place to eat at in Rome. I initially found this during my research, and to my surprise it was actually recommended to us by our Airbnb host as well. We dined here on our first night in Rome. Our Airbnb was only a couple of blocks away which made it very convenient. The spot is in an unassuming part of the area - almost hidden. Everything we got here from pastas to the house wine and even dessert were outstanding. Service was also great - they have English, French and German translations of the menu. My favorites were the Amatriciana, Carbonara, Rigatoni con coda alla vaccinara and the Roman artichoke. Our server was also very nice. Devid was very personable - probably the best server we had during our stay in Rome. This place was also reasonably priced compared to everywhere else we ate, at least one or two Euros cheaper for the food. This place presents like a high end restaurant, but for half the price. The restaurant itself is beautiful, and the service was amazing. Our waiter was very nice, and the food came quickly. We got the risotto, the salmon and potatoes, the broccolini pizza, and the grilled lamb. The risotto and salmon were both impeccable. The lamb was tough, and they hadn't gotten broccoli in for the day so they informed us later that they replaced it with chicory which was just alright. Best meal of our entire 10-day trip to Rome and Puglia. Huge menu - more than the typical Roman Italian choices of the classic pastas, and all sorts of entree choices (including grilled chicken, which we saw no place else on our trip). Started with simple apps of grilled vegetables on toasted crusty bread - fabulous. Then a pizza with rocket lettuce (arugula) that was wafer-thin and delicious. For pastas, we went with a rigatoni with a tomato oxtail sauce that I will include in the annals of top-3 pasta dishes ever. The rigatoni was spot-on al-dente and the sauce tasted so rich without making me feel overstuffed. My wife went with spaghetti bolognese, which was perfectly done. One of the challenges when vacationing overseas is finding the restaurants that the locals frequent and enjoy. While TA and Yelp are helpful, they are really focused on other travelers, so it takes some additional effort to find a place that you would go to with your family if you lived in the area. This is that place. Right by the Vatican and easy to walk to if you are staying anywhere west of Piazza Navona. Oh, and the cost - for a half-liter of a very drinkable house white, an Aperol Spritz, the apps, pizza, pastas and two cappuccinos - was under €70 with gratuity. read more

This restaurant was recommended to us by a local chef. He told us this is where he liked to go to eat. So, we figured we should give it a try. We made a reservation thru The Fork. It was easy, and they were ready for us when we arrived. This is a very large restaurant that is a stone's throw from St. Peter's Basilica. We came for lunch after the Sunday noon Papal blessing. We were impressed by all the locals dining here. The restaurant is very modern; but, it embraces the old. In the main dining room, there is a glass wall that looks out onto the Passetto (the escape route for the Pope from the Vatican to Castel Sant'Angelo). Christian, our server, turned out to be very nice and attentive. We thought we would like to have pizza, but they do not serve pizza for lunch (only in the evening). No problem; my husband decided on the Lasagna (€ 10) and I can never resist a bowl of Rigatoni al Sugo alla Coda Vaccinara (oxtail), also for €10. Don't knock it till you try it, it is beyond delicious. We enjoyed a liter of their house red wine priced at €10. We felt the prices were very reasonable and that our dishes were delicious. It was not crowded but apparently much of the room was reserved for later. Surprisingly, my wife ordered a pizza, her first in Rome, and I didn't. Instead, I went with one of their several specials, Lasagna. Our server was engaging and helpful, and that was appreciated. It wasn't long before the food arrived, first a salad, followed by our entrees. My lasagna was a pretty dense stack of noodles with a good oily meat sauce. I could feel my fork cut through so many layers of the firm but still well cooked noodles. I knew going in this would be a substantial amount of food. I liked it, very tasty. Getting the bill and settling up went well and reasonably quick. That too was appreciated, it was late and we had a long hike back to our hotel. read more
