Ask your server for drinks that are not on the menu or let the server know what you're into and they'll whip up something awesome. Half shell oysters are so delicious and fresh. So great to see a new sushi restaurant in the Tracy area! Out of all of the sushi places I've had in Tracy, Zoku has definitely taken my #1 spot to go to. They just recently opened over by FoodMaxx - inside, everything's been completely revamped from the restaurant they took over. Everything looks newly renovated, plenty of TV screens everywhere, and overall seemed really inviting! ***SERVICE: It was surprisingly busy for a Tuesday night, but then again they do have limited hours only for dinner at the moment. On the service aspect, it was a bit slow (getting seated, having our order taken, receiving our food, receiving the check - we arrived at ~7:15pm, and left at around 8:30pm). I'm sure it'll get better as time goes on though since they're on the newer side, but being attentive and proactive is definitely something they could work on! ***FOOD: Fish quality was great! Again, better than others in the area. My partner and I ordered a decent variety of items: + Vegetable Tempura (5/5): Two of each vegetable made it perfect to split for two! Each item was evenly battered and tasted super good. The tempura sauce stood out a lot in a good way - it was hot and fresh and had a stronger soy sauce taste. + Zuke Tartare (3/5): I was disappointed by the presentation since it didn't look much like the photos I saw on Yelp - it was garnished heavily with garlic chips that overpowered the rest of the dish, and it looked as though it had been toppled over then hidden by the shisho leaf. Taste-wise, I wish there was more than just tuna, avocado, and garlic chips - I think they forgot to add sauce? But, had I known this, I would've just opted for a roll with similar ingredients instead. + Caterpillar Roll (3.5/5): A decent roll! The rice was a bit dry and it was a little heavy with the unagi sauce which similarly to the Zuke Tartare, overpowered the taste of the roll. + Salmon Nigiri (4.5/5): Fatty and fresh! The rice to fish ratio was okay, I wish there had been more rice but the nigiri overall was great. + Unagi Nigiri (4.5/5): Similarly to the salmon nigiri, it could've used more rice (both were also a bit dry) but it had a nice and subtle sweetness to it. It's important to remember that they are new, so I'd probably give it some time before deciding to visit again. But, super happy to see another sushi place in Tracy! read more

Run, don't walk, to this new sushi restaurant in Tracy! There are multiple Japanese restaurants in Tracy, and I've tried multiple, but none even held a candle to this place!! Zoku has a nice chill ambience to it, and was ~70% full when we walked in. Short wait until we were seated, their menu was surprisingly small and easy to understand. The sashimi really showed the quality of their fish. The portions are enormous - I was used to thin slices marked up at other nearby competitors but these were chunks! Based on their fish quality, I'd have no hesitation ordering their nigiri or rolls next time. Service was good; not super proactive but every time I raised my hand wait staff did come relatively quickly. New Sushi Restaurant in Tracy, I would have to say takes the #1 Sushi spot in town. Zoku is a sister restaurant to Amakara from what my server was telling me, which is crazy because Amakara in Dublin is my all time favorite place! Now I don't have to drive so far! Ambiance 10/10 Nice dim lighting, chill music & vibes. Low key just the way I like it Food 10/10 Clean tasting fish, very good quality. Tempura could have been crispier. Spicy Tuna could have had more flavor maybe a little more spice, sesame oil & soy. Tuna tartar was missing a salt component. Is tasted like fresh cubed fish, on top of fresh avocado and garlic chips. Service. 7/10 So our server was new with no prior experience but she did the best she could and that was the best measuring tool. She will be get better & feel more comfortable over time. What a disappointment to show up on New Year's Eve and find the restaurant closed. No signage indicating it would be closed. I watched multiple people walk up, just as I had, to find the doors locked. The good news is we drove across town and had a wonderful sushi dinner at Kengo. read more

Came here 2 days in a row and both times were a disappointment. Both days there were items missing from my order. First day I had to take the loss since I ordered take out, I second day I checked the itemized list since I knew things that we ordered never made it to the table. They charged us $50 worth of sushi that never made it to the table. $50. Half of the bill. It shouldn't have been a shock to anyone that we never got what we ordered if there was a dedicated server to each table. You have what appears is the bartender acting as a server, one actual server, and the hostess acting as the 3rd server. All doing their other primary jobs in addition to trying to serve multiple tables. It wasn't busy but it's just unorganized. No one checked on the table after taking our order unless we flagged someone down. The sushi that did come out came out fast so I had a feeling that the items that were missing weren't going to make it to our table. Thankfully we checked the receipt (that we had to ask for) before paying. Again, I can't stress enough, they'll come by with a card reader and tell you your total but won't show you a receipt. Ask for a receipt. Lastly, it's very hot inside with little airflow. Please prop open a door, invest in a fan, or turn on the air. A man who appeared homeless stopped in for a beer, used the bathroom, then left. He passed by our table to go to the bathroom and for the remainder of our stay it smelled like urine. 2 stars read more

Went for the first time with some friends on a Friday night because we love Amakara. We arrived at 6:30 and they put our names on a list. We were told it would be around a 30min wait. 2 HOURS LATER, we are still not seated, and servers are taking shots at the bar with other customers. We had to flag someone down in order to just get a table. A gentleman came out and apologized for the delay and poor service and offered us complimentary drinks for the inconvenience. Nearly 30min later, our drinks hadn't come out yet. Shocker. Food was good, I will admit. We saw at least two of the servers taking shots (I believe a birthday was being celebrated) and finally someone yelled at the server to immediately get us our drinks. As we neared closing time, an inebriated server (Spencer, I believe) apologized and offered to comp our drinks.... (Which were originally offered to as an apology for the poor service). Yikes Really shocked at the management here and lack of professionalism especially considering that it is a sister restaurant of Amakara, a reputable restaurant. Zoku is a consistent date night spot for my husband and I! They have a very laidback, cozy atmosphere and when you sit at the bar everyone makes an attempt to interact with their customers. While they don't have the largest sushi selection in town, their fish is fresh and their food is always excellent across the board. I find their Tonkatsu Ramen to be among the best in town with a large serving, perfectly cooked soft boiled eggs and pork belly and the option to make it spicy. Their specialty oysters and sesame fried chicken are amazing and we order them whenever they have them! If you are looking for a quiet date night spot with quick service, this may not be the spot for you as it's not really the vibe Zoku seems to be going for. I've been wanting to try this place out for a long time now. I have yet to dine in but, I did have a Shrimp Mango Roll to go today and I must say, it was 5 stars worth of goodness! It was an excellent fusion of flavors, loved the citrus touch which complimented the sweetness of the mango! The freshness of the real crab and shrimp were evident too. I placed my to go order on the phone and was quoted a 20+ minute wait which was accurate. The woman who took my order was also very pleasant and helpful. Upon walking in during dinner time, the ambiance is dark but open and nice. Not too many tables but that is alright. Staff is very pleasant, smiling and greeted you upon entering. Food was AMAZING! We ordered the hamachi carpaccio, jalapeno hamachi roll and the red dragon roll. We also ordered 2 watermelon margaritas and some saporro beer. Everything was just amazing. Found out from one of the workers that this is the sister restaurant of my fave Amakara in Dublin. Well no wonder the food is amazing. My one complaint is wish that their menu is just as versatile as Amakara.. oh and they need better ventilation as at one point it got really smoky in the restaurant. I would have given the food 4.5 stars, the taste were awesome! But as you can tell from the pics, they're missing the wasabi and ginger! It takes away from the sushi experience. They told us 35min, no problem as hubby had to drive 15min to pick up, but it took 1hr. So he waited another 30min, and all the while all they had to do was pour the miso soup, which was a little on the salty side. For $80, I want my wasabi and ginger! Easily the best sushi in Tracy and possibly one of the best in the East Bay area. The fish is fresh. The rice is cooked absolutely perfect. They definitely get really busy and sometimes it does take a little while to get drinks and food but still well worth the wait. I'm not much of a yelper. I don't like to leave bad reviews. We've been here about 5 times. The food is always good. Some of the best food in Tracy. However the service the last 3 times has been pretty bad. Tonight being the worst. My family and I very understanding. We're in the industry. So we get it. However this place is lacking some serious management. The amount of different tasks each person working today was ridiculous. There seemed to be a manager before but haven't seen him in the last few times we've been in. The staff seems to care and wants to do a good job but they are being set up to fail. I hope that whomever reads this doesn't take it personal and instead can take some constructive criticism, and hire yourself some more help.
