It's unfortunate but I was pretty disappointed with my recent experience at Kimono Sushi. This small sushi restaurant used to be my absolute favorite spot to stop at on my way from the East Bay out to Fresno and the Central Valley for work. I really loved this spot. The first time I ever came to this restaurant and tried their Ichiban Maki, I was hooked, because the knife skills needed to cut the cucumber so thin in order to literally make a sushi roll wrapped in a cucumber was amazing to me. But like many restaurants, I feel like it no longer gives me that same exciting feeling when I go there, and I definitely do not feel that I get the same value that I used to get. Very different today from how it was 2 years ago. In my most recent visit, I sat at the sushi bar like I usually do. When I placed my order, the waitress let me know that they were out of the Ichiban Maki, because they were out of the thin cucumber wrap. It's not that they buy this. The chefs have to make it and they have to cut it themselves. I know this is a tedious process cuz I've watch them do it myself in a previous visit. Ironically, there were two sushi chefs behind the sushi bar just standing there when I was ordering. I guess it's easier just to say that you're out of something rather than have your sushi chefs spend the time cutting up more cucumber wrap. Being that this is one of your most popular roles, I would think that it would be important to always have the cucumber wrap available. And if you do run out, maybe you would ask your your sushi chefs to start cutting some more instead of just standing there talking behind the counter. But maybe I'm just crazy. Either way, I ordered the Ichiban anyways, and instead I substituted soy paper wrap for the cucumber wrap. I order the ichiban all the time because it doesn't contain rice. So wrapping it in soy paper is just another way to wrap the roll and still enjoy a roll that doesn't have rice. The problem is, this is a $14.95 roll and what I got on my plate was something the size of a $5 roll. This thing wasn't even big enough to be calling an appetizer. I pointed it out to the chef and he just started at me like (you get what you get). I was kinda shocked but I didn't say anything more. Just ate my little roll and moved on. I also ordered a raging fire roll which does contain rice. My hope was at least with this roll, I would enjoy it and leave the restaurant feeling filled and satisfied. No such luck. Once again, I got a roll that was extremely small, covered in sauce and definitely not worth $15. It was basically the size of a cucumber making roll that I buy for my kids. But a cucumber making roll is $4 or $5. This roll is $15 and again one of their "Chef Specialty Rolls". Super embarrassing if this is what you serve as your chef specialty. Thankfully for me, I had started my meal with two appetizers. The nigiri sushi app and the sake fin. Both were great, but they are appetizers. What can I say. In the end, I spent $60 by myself to stop and grab dinner on my drive. Frankly, I left still feeling a little hungry. I know that sounds crazy being that I ordered two appetizers, two sushi rolls and a miso soup, but I'm not kidding. I was pretty disappointed. Maybe it was an off night for the chef. Even the best restaurants and chefs have bad nights. I may give this restaurant another try at some point because I still love the Ichiban Maki when it is made properly, but if my next experience is like this one, and if I continue to see sushi rolls the size of my pinky, it may be my last experience. Sushi is expensive enough as it is. The next time, if I do go back, if they serve me a what received tonight, I would probably send it back. Be better. Maintain high quality and provide value, and your customers will stay loyal. If you head down the cheap road, you will end up with a very quiet restaurant. read more

We decided to try a different Japanese spot for dinner on Tuesday. Whenever we try a new Japanese spot I always order the salmon teriyaki. It's my favorite dish to get. I didn't like the salmon teriyaki here, it tasted off. The sauce was light and not a thick glaze and it tasted different. Even the sauce for the tempura tasted different too. My boyfriend enjoyed the chicken teriyaki dish. His only complaint was that the salad had too much dressing. I thought it was fine and I liked that there was a lot of dressing. This is our second time here. Great food and at a good price just like a few other places in town but their only problem and reason of the two stars is due to their service. The lack of customer interaction and acknowledgment is a major negative in their industry. The amount of time to get just their attention ton order the attempts to ask for anything. The bags felt soooo light like air and had zero weight to them I questioned whether they even had anything in them! Now I know why their portions are quite small. Apps: jalapeño popper, agadashi tofu. The popper was 2 jalapeños sliced in half, so 4 pieces. Very small portion. Flavor was okay. Tofu portion was decent. Rolls: -Fuji Mountain looked big in the pictures but it was SO tiny. My goodness. The box was soooo light!! If you come to this establishment, I honestly suggest that you come here not hoping for much. Although the food was good (surprisingly their miso soup is one of the best), coming here on the Fourth of July was probably one of the things I regretted the most and I will probably never come back here until they improve their service and professionalism. We tried the bento sets and one roll, which honestly was pretty good. I was surprised by the teriyaki chicken, and miso soup, both of which were seasoned quite well. I would say that the walnut prawn rolls were a little undercooked in terms of the shrimp, but the looks of it were quite creative. Sashimi, on the other hand, was really fishy and was a big let down. It didn't even taste fresh. It just felt as if someone cut it and just left it there to rot. Also, the 5pc sashimi I got was way too small to be called sashimi. Also, just to put a warning out that Kimono is not run by Japanese people -- they're run by a bunch of rude Chinese people who honestly pretend that they are running an authentic Japanese restaurant. Just own up to it, y'all. I'm not stupid when I can see y'all communicate. I'm giving the service a blatantly honest one star because of how rude they treated me and my partner. The waitress was absolutely passive aggressive, and kept on rushing us in the process. What really ticked me off was the fact that the boss and the boss lady did not say anything about closing early -- neither was there a sign about closing early due to a family function. That was in their turn very unprofessional, and an absolutely uncourteous way to not remind your patrons and assume that we all know. LOL. Also, no soy sauce on tables? Horrible customer service. Ran out of one protein, kept insisting on another that I mentioned I was allergic to from the beginning. Cute little sushi spot. Open later than most spots in Tracy so decided to give it a try. The sushi was beautiful decorated! Some shaped like flowers or hearts. The sushi was very cheap compared to a lot of places in Tracy! The menu was super big filled with many options. They offer ramen, udon, sushi, sashimi, chicken teriyaki, and more! Hands down one of the best sushi spots in Tracy! The service was fast and friendly, and the atmosphere was clean and welcoming. You can tell they take pride in their food and presentation. We tried several rolls, but the standouts were definitely the Donald Duck and the Magic School Bus rolls--both were absolutely delicious! The Donald Duck roll had the perfect balance of flavor and texture, and the Magic School Bus was not only tasty but super creative. Each bite was bursting with fresh ingredients and bold flavors. We ordered one bento, I asked if the teriyaki chicken was white or dark meat but the poor girl could not understand me and ended up saying yes white. It's dark meat fyi. Everything looked old. The meat, the rice and three pot stickers (probably purchased at Costco) were dry, hard and old. The salad was basically mayo and lettuce and it was trash. Spicy edamame was made with jarlic and chili oil and it was ok. The cool running roll also looked old. The tuna on top was small and dry looking. The service was prompt! Their menu had several pages to offer a variety of items including sushi, bento box, udon and appetizers. The prices are very fair that we ordered 8 rolls, an order of spicy calamari and 4 miso soups. Every roll was good and tasted fresh. If I had to rate them, it would be.... AWARENESS: I was told by a friend and fellow sushi lover that Kimono Sushi, which had taken over the old Blue Fin sushi restaurant served Uni (Sea Urchin), so you know I had to try them out. NARRATIVE: Like I mentioned above. Kimono's is located in the same space that Blue Fin once occupied. Walking in on a Friday afternoon, I was promptly greeted, seated and my drink order was taken. Looking about the new (old) place, I did noticed they have done some decorative updates and upgrades. New paint and carpet and the sushi menu is pretty extensive. I order a few sashimi items, one of which was Uni. And the presentation and the fresh seafood did not disappoint. SCENE: Kimono's is located in the Home Depot shopping center area. Ordered online and it was ready by the time I got there. Efficiency: Check. They got my order right, I had asked for cucumber substitute as I can't eat avocado. I ordered a tuna and salmon maki. Hamachi maki. Spicy tuna. Rainbow roll. Spicy poke. Ranging Fire. And Cool Runnings. Everything was well made. Nothing fell apart during transport. One of the roll, the slices was a bit inconsistent but not a big deal as you still get the entire roll. I liked that they don't use too much rice. A lot of places just stuff their rolls with rice, that is why they look so big. Could they use a bit more fish? Yes, but guessing the price would then be higher. Taste wise, it wasn't bad. The Spicy rolls were Spicy but not overly powering. Fishes didn't taste "fishy" which is a good thing. No fishy aftertaste. Price wise: Pretty on par with the other sushi places around there. As were the portion sizes. I've ordered here a handful of times over the years and they have been somewhat consistent, for the most part in terms of their food quality. I've only had 1 bad experience there but it was only one of their rolls. The fish was not looking fresh, so I didn't eat it. Ambience: Hard to say. I've always tried to order to go during non busy times. I've never been there when there are a lot of people. So, if you go during non peak hours, it's nice and quiet, minus the tvs that are playing. I can tell you the fish being used is not fresh at all. Every sushi roll we ordered was tasteless and the sushi itself was flat. Although ordering multiple rolls left us unsatisfied, it's okay. My partner gave their baked mussels, which he ordered, a 7 out of 10. Everything was bland; and didn't exceed our expectations. We often try different sushi restaurants in Manteca/Tracy and have experienced the best of sushi elsewhere. But we did agree that their miso soup was delicious. I enjoyed my lunch Bento! You get a generous amount of food for such an affordable price. It also came with a miso soup and a side salad which was very nice. I called in my order and the service representative quoted me a 15 minute wait. I showed up 15 mins later and my food was packed and ready to go. They were even thoughtful enough to secure my miso soup in plastic wrap just incase the soup container wasn't secured. Not one drop spilled out so I was really grateful for the extra touch. The restaurant is very quaint on the inside with table and booth seating. The customers who were dining in seemed to be enjoying themselves. The worst sushi place I have ever been in my life and I have been eating sushi for forty years. If I could give it negative five stars I would. To start the waitress didn't understand I wanted to sit at the bar. Then she reluctantly came forward to take my order. I hate giving my sushi order all at once. I want the experience of ordering one piece at a time through my imate san. Anyway she said I could so I order a salmon skin roll and the imate san just turns around and goes in the back. By the way there was this guy just sleeping in the corner. After a while the waitress comes with the most skimpy salmon skin handroll ever. She then asks what else I want. I don't know I haven't decided. So then I attempt to order Taro. No one acknowledged me then ten mins later the waitress tells me they are out. Frustrated I order a salmon egg nigiri from her. Ten mins later it comes out. Well anyway by this point I am done and I ask for the check. I let the waitress know this was the worst sushi experience of my life. Then when I ask she informs me the imate sans don't speak English. So I just pay and leave. This place is utterly terrible and it deserves to be out of business. If you want sushi in Tracy just go to Safeway and buy some premade, it will be leaps and bounds better than this sorry excuse for a sushi place. Just terrible. read more

I've been here multiple times as there are no other alternatives for sushi here, but for what we have it's alright. The size of the fish on some of the sushi is too small and there is way too much rice. I have ordered online before and the fish was sooo small they obviously skimped on it.
