Finally getting around to leaving this review! We came to Zoku for a date night back in May and really enjoyed it. We happened to come on a day they had $1 oysters, so of course we had to get some. The oysters were good, the sashimi was fresh and yummy, and we also loved the shishito peppers and seaweed salad. I couldn't decide on a drink, so I ended up double fisting because I wanted to try two different ones lol. No regrets. Both were really good! The restaurant itself is really nice inside too. Great decor, nice ambiance, and definitely a good spot for a date night. We had a great time and will definitely be back! read more

Always a great experience at Zoku whether you plan to dine in or pickup Togo, the service is always as good as the food! So many great options on the menu for everyone, even those that don't eat fish. The food is always fresh and delicious. They have so many amazing tasting things I recommend you try at least one thing new every time! If you're dining in they have plenty of seating to choose from including bar, sushi bar and regular restaurant dining tables of all sizes ~ they seem to be able to accommodate larger parties as well. Ramen is good, though the main focus seems to be the broth. Noodles are decent and absorb a decent amount of the spicy soup. The egg and pork are contrastingly weak, the flavorful soup overpowers everything else instead of complementing it. Otherwise, they have everything from the cozy atmosphere to the amazing service. I highly recommend this place if your into the sushi and alcohol instead, but for pretty much anything else: I highly suggest the location near Raley's. read more

Hubby was craving ramen, so we stopped in, but this place definitely seems more sushi-focused than ramen-focused. Ramen just doesn't feel like their "thing." Chicken Karaage (1/5) We were very disappointed. It wasn't true karaage, it felt more like frozen popcorn chicken with super thick batter. Not good at all. They also forgot the mayo that typically comes with it. I had to ask, and they brought out spicy mayo on the side. I only knew to ask because I've had karaage many times before, including during the time I lived in Japan. And I'm not comparing it to Japan standards, I've had great karaage here in the U.S. too. This just wasn't it. We ate a few pieces and then let our server know we couldn't continue. The server was very nice about it, and the manager removed it from our bill, which we appreciated. Ramen (2/5) When it first arrived, it had a slightly off smell and I was immediately hesitant. I didn't want to judge it too quickly, though. The broth ended up being very pepper-heavy, which was... interesting. Not necessarily in a good way. It just wasn't something I'd order again. Beer (5/5) Hubby loved his beer! Our only note is that we wish we'd been told it was the giant bottle size , that thing was huge and only hubby was drinking that night. Overall: The service was friendly. A friend recommended this spot for sushi and I'm so glad he did! We used to go to Livermore but now we can stay here in Tracy to eat quality sushi! From the beginning everyone here is friendly, professional, and helpful. If there is a problem, they remain courteous and always try their best to resolve any confusion. Also the owner and employees are regulars there and we love seeing their familiar faces when we visit. It's like they have a great employee fam going on! Ambiance is cozy and cute. I'm newly celiac and pregnant and have been craving sushi! The chef and our waiter were extremely caring, understanding, and cautious when I asked questions and was trying to find something to order. They created a fully custom roll for me with no cross contamination and to say I thoroughly enjoyed it is an understatement. Fresh fried calamari, you can tell that the quality is not just a small previously frozen pieces. Comes with a Creative non-spicy cilantro ponzu sauce. Cucumber salad. 850. Comes with shrimp, the cucumber itself is sour, but would have liked a little more sweet. The wakame (seaweed) salad is also just OK. I probably would not order again. Mango shrimp. 1750. Was able to substitute tuna for California roll. It was a great substitution, and very nice to accommodate. Overall great roll. Tempura bento. $23.00 came with two pieces of shrimp and several pieces of vegetable tempura (two or three slices of carrot, two broccoli, two green bean). The rice was very nice. Well made short grain rice. The tempera sauce was perfect classic traditional to put sauce sweet and shoyu you fish base. Miso soup was also very traditionally made. We stopped by last night for dinner and ordered 3 dishes: Tonkotsu Ramen, Dragon roll and Tako kimchee salad. The noodle is not their thing. It tastes like salt water. For $19.95 plus tax, it is way over price for a bowl of salt water, couple slices of meat and half of a boiled egg. The roll was ok. Tako kimchee is also salty, but it's acceptable if you serve it with alcohol. Also, we were not informed of a small charge when we used our card to pay. We only noticed that until the receipt is printed out. It should be communicated with the customer even if it's small, I think. Overall, our experience was not a good. read more

Quality! Finally was in town and had the chance to Check this place out and I'm sure glad I did! When we walked in, we quickly got seated. It's a relatively small restaurant so I'm sure there will be some wait times! The menu had a nice selection of food and drinks. We got some hot sake and edamame to star! Both delicious. We then got two rolls. Both delicious and very fresh. The scallop one only had 3 pieces to it (bummer) but they were HUGE!!!! Almost too huge where you couldn't enjoy it all in one bite... but boy was it delicious!!!!! Definitely on the upper price of local food for this area... but sushi tends to be. This place has insane potential to be consistently awesome but they lack customer service in general basically. A big reason for this is they're understaffed, it's as simple as that. You can't put maximizing profit in front of taking care of the people who come in and make you money. We arrived to 3-4 open 4 top tables in the restaurant, and were told they were going to clean a table off to sit us. Why would you clean a table when there's 4 clean ones already, all ready to be sat if needed? We waited longer than we should've, especially considering this. The host could've just sat us right when we walked in. Server took a bit to come over, ok no big deal, asks us if we're ready to order, we order apps and ask for a few more minutes. We then order the rest of our food. The apps come out, and we finish both before we get our waters even? The thing about being short staffed a bit also is........you need to step up the pace a little bit, its what the situation at that time dictates. Then our food comes out, if I remember correctly, 1 entree at a time for the 4 of us, with my daughters coming out much later than the rest. They also forgot her soup that we ordered, and an extra roll that came way after as I think they forgot. Now the food to me is good, but rolls are normal size, normal fish portions, but expensive. You hit me with $20+ on a roll, it needs to be better than good. I had to get up to ask for our bill & a box, weren't really checked on during the meal either. My wife had 1 beer, & 1 saki. Bill was over $200. Even with 1 beer, 1 saki, & 2 apps, I thought the bill was high, especially for the service. Definitely a gem of a restaurant in Tracy. The food was amazing, the presentation and food was great. The sushi was really good and fresh. Very flavorful and delightful. My party of people ordered many sushi rolls and it was all very tasty and delicious. The service was really good, from the time we got in to the time we left the restaurant it was good vibes all around. The atmosphere there was really nice. I've been wanting to check out Zoku for quite some time. We decided it was a FriYay day at work- so let's go out for dinner! We came in right at opening, before the rush that came in near the end of our meal! The menu has a ton of options, and since I practiced restraint, I'll have to go back for a few other items that caught my eye. This time around, we got the assorted sashimi appetizer with tuna, salmon and hamachi. For being quite a newbie to the raw fish world, and very texture picky, I enjoyed the freshness of each type and would order it again. We also ordered the grilled edamame- which that addition of the char flavor made this something I would choose to order each time. The agedashi tofu was also quite tasty, but due to the textural aspect, I would have preferred a firm tofu. This is traditionally made with soft to medium-firm, so just something to keep in mind texturally! (I'd order it again though... I'd just have to prepare myself that it more melts in your mouth.) Lastly, there were 3 rolls I was bouncing between and settled on the Chili Spider Salmon roll with soft shell crab. I liked it, but I don't know that it would be the particular dish that would bring me in time and time again. I'm looking forward to trying some of the other options that caught my eye. Service was great- prompt, friendly and efficient. I like how they have the sushi bar seating and it was clean and uncluttered, unlike so many other places in the area appear to be. A big shout-out to our hostess Rachel! She was AMAZING! Came on a Saturday night around 7pm and it was really full in the restaurant. We were immediately seated with waters and menus. The selection of the menu was endless, there were so many great appetizers to sushi rolls it was hard to choose just one. Upon ordering, Rachel was able to help us out and give suggestions since we were struggling a bit. The food quality was great overall, the service was impeccable, and to much surprise as someone who has lived in Tracy for quite some time this spot is a must for amazing sushi! This place is amazing. The sushi tastes fresh, the rice is delicious and the drinks are on point. Our server was very attentive and so was the gentleman tending the bar. They both walked around and made sure everyone had what they needed. The music was also on point they were playing 2000s bangers so it was nice to sit eat good food and listen to great music. This place is slow-- like SLOW SLOW lmaooo. Every time i come here, I wait close to (and sometimes over) an hour or so for simple things. A salad, a mixed hosomaki, a specialty roll, etc. I understand that the kitchen is obliged to fulfill DoorDash and Uber Eats orders as well. but the in-restaurant service suffers time and time again. The servers are almost always very friendly and very apologetic for the shortcoming of the kitchen; the kind service is a bright spot unfortunately hindered by long wait times. If you want quality straightforward sushi in town, just go to Kengo. I've tried a few things here and I would have to say, it's not bad, but not that good (for the price). When I get the sashimi the cuts are irregular. Either it's big thick cuts or mildly thin. The fish seems ok but not quite fresh. I feel like with the rolls, sometimes it tastes overly sauced; so much so that it's hard to taste the fish. The rolls do fall apart too easily. I ordered the poke a few times and this was the first time it didn't come with chips. Guessing they either forgot or they no longer serve it with chips. Whether you're picking up or dining in, the staff here provide great service and are all super friendly and helpful. Shout out to Jeremey who works the bar and makes bomb drinks! Sushi that I've tried from here is definitely a 9/10 and they have other options too, great appetizers and if you're unsure they will give you recommendations and or explain anything needed to you about deciding on a dish! Our family has visited Zoku a few times, and they never disappoint. To start with, the grilled edamame is excellent. The short ribs (kalbi) are soft and tasty. The hamachi carpaccio is wonderfully flavorful. Every sushi roll is the perfect size and not overfull with rice. Service is impeccable, and the ambiance is reminiscent of the lower east side of Manhattan, NY. I would venture to say Zoku is arguably the best restaurant in Tracy and while it stems from Amakara in Dublin/Pleasanton, it far surpasses it in flavor and service. read more

So we thought we would give it another go with take out (the guy that answered was very nice). We had three rolls and none of them were good...I hate saying that. If you're looking for a decent and vibey contemporary Japanese restaurant in the Valley, look no further than Zoku's in Tracy. They're located quite conveniently in Gateway Plaza off of 11th and Corral Hollow -- and I've always wanted to try this place, until last night. The vibe in this place is immaculate, and I thought I'd share my experience on this particular restaurant: The food in this restaurant is not only exquisite, but it was also very rich in flavor and in texture as well. We ordered an udon (mind you, tempura was seven dollars each so I was taken a bit aback by that), but I was thoroughly impressed with the batter and how deep fried they made it. Talk about hot sake in a Japanese restaurant -- I think that was a first that I've seen (at least in the many years that I was legally able to drink). We also ordered some rolls as well -- specifically, the spicy crab roll and the avocado mango roll. Both were absolutely rich in flavor, I just love how many sushi rolls there were named after Tracy, which you have got to give a try -- they're a must at this restaurant! The service and hospitality started off a little awkward -- however, the lead server came up and took care of us and make sure that our needs were met. I absolutely appreciate the patronizing and exquisite service. The atmosphere was expansive, and it was open seating, although I wish other patents would be more considerate of the people around them because we were a little bit annoyed at them. Zoku deserves 5 stars for its service alone! Our waiter, named John Legend according to our receipt, gave the best service I've ever received in any restaurant. He was super kind and understanding on how long we took to decide our order since it was my party's first time here. He was happy to give recommendations and gave us the seaweed salad we ordered free of charge as it was our first time at Zoku. The seaweed salad was delicious, but a little different from other places. It wasn't as sweet but I appreciated being able to taste the seaweed flavor more. My favorite suggestion from John was the salmon belly. The salmon was so fresh and the extra fat in the salmon belly made it such a delicious bite. My younger brother ordered the chicken katsu, which was huge!! Half of the plate was filled with rice and the other half was chicken. He couldn't finish it so we had leftovers. The restaurant has a small bar area for drinks, a sushi bar, and regular dining tables as well so there's something for everyone! We had a terrible experience here. My husband, son, and I came in excited to try this place for the first time, but from the moment we walked in, we were treated poorly. The person who greeted us was rude, blunt, and dismissive, which immediately made us feel unwelcome. After being seated, another family was sat right next to us by the same employee. She immediately greeted them warmly and took their drink order, while we were completely ignored. We watched as more people came in, were seated, and had their orders taken, yet no one acknowledged us at all. After waiting 15-20 minutes without so much as a greeting, drink order, or any form of service, we decided to leave. It was very clear that the staff only chose to acknowledge and prioritize people they seemed familiar with, while treating new customers like we did not matter. When we informed the person at the front that we were leaving, she responded with the same rude, dismissive attitude instead of showing any concern or professionalism. First off, this place is so dang good! I stopped by shortly after they opened for my lunch break and I have to say I'm so happy I did. The hostess was super nice and the restaurant itself is clean. The atmosphere felt welcoming, especially considering there seemed two be a couple of regulars chatting with the chefs behind the counter about their vacations, etc. I sat at the bar and ordered chirashi and an order of takoyaki. I ordered a bit too much and ended up paking the takoyaki to go lol. The chirashi dish comes with either a soup or salad. I ordered the salad and was pleased to see that it was a good-sized salad. Other places just give you chopped lettuce but this one came with cucumbers and tomatoes. The chirashi itself was immaculate and came with an assortment of fish including scallops! The presentation was very nice and the fish were so fresh and melted in my mouth. By the time I got to the takoyaki I was pretty stuffed but I did try one before asking for a box. Unfortunately, the food was very disappointing. The fish did not taste fresh, and the rolls were extremely small for the price. On top of that, I was charged several extra service fees that were never mentioned upfront--I only found out after calling to ask. The person I spoke with was apologetic, but it didn't change that I paid nearly $70 for three small rolls. I would not order from here again, nor would I recommend it.
