I came here when i first moved to Tracy back in 2018. And I was not a fan back then, but i will say their food has definitely gotten better. My parents ordered bento boxes and they enjoyed their meal. I would say probably not the best spot for sushi. Quality is just okay and you get very little ingredients in the roll for the cost. Server was friendly but there was only one server and you could tell she was overwhelmed when it got busier and we saw our food sitting on the counter for some time. We would come back for the bento boxes but probably not much else. read more

I really enjoyed this little place. The signage outside does not match the menu; but that could be a property management issue. Hardly reason to fault them. Service was lovely. It is a very small space, so can be quite crowded and it is very strip mall - but this is Tracy we are talking about. Keep your expectations realistic friends!! 4 stars are based on what I would expect. The food was very good (not my greatest sushi and grill experience ever) the space is clean, the service lovely and polite and the prices reasonable. Me and the wife has been a regular at Matsumoto even before when the place was named Matsuyama. The food and service were always on point either dining at the restaurant or just calling them for takeout. The staff were always friendly and accommodating that we became close to start addressing us by our first name. The restaurant is very convenient to go to any day of the week and the fish on their sushi and sashimi are always fresh and their bento boxes are always a good option. read more

Tried this spot a couple of weeks ago for lunch. We noticed that the restaurant has two names. Outside it says Matsumoto Sushi and on the menu it says Matsuyama restaurant. Their bento box here is on the small side but the food portion was good to fill us up. My boyfriend ordered the beef teriyaki with mixed tempura and I ordered the salmon teriyaki and beef teriyaki. Overall, food was delicious and service here was quick and friendly. read more

I was so confused driving in the parking lot looking for Matsuyama, but knew Matsumoto had to be the place when I saw the 835 address # on the door. They are around the corner from Golden Bear physical therapy. I ordered to-go, based on their online menu. Miso Soup: average tasting, but good for the cold weather. potato Croquette: okay I wasn't expecting to like this so much but it was so perfectly potato-y inside, and perfectly golden and crispy on the outside. It came with a dipping sauce that tasted like yakisoba sauce. A lil on the pricey side for a $9 croquette, but it was tasty and would get it again. We ordered 4 rolls. 2 rolls were packaged per container, but we couldn't figure out what half of the rolls were. My husband and I pulled up the online menu and tried process of elimination to determine which rolls were which. We gave up and just ate them. I do wish they would label the containers with the roll names. I will request this in the future. They gave us plenty of soy sauce packets which at first, I was like dang...we aren't going to use that many...but we used them ALL! Their pickled ginger was a beautiful pink and delicious. I feel silly saying that bc it's just ginger, and how can you mess that up. Well, once you've had ginger that tastes like bleach, you appreciate sides like this that one wouldn't normally care for. Overall, for 2 adults: 1 croquette, 1 small miso soup, 4 rolls, + tax = ~ $80. Sushi is pricey in general so this is about right, as each roll was about $15-$17. For Tracy and anything else in this rural county, This place is as good as it gets. The Sashimi is Fresh. The Teriyaki has the right amount of grilling and enough Sauce to coat and saturate the portions given. There's enough "Themed Rolls" on the Chalkboard to the right of the establishment to keep any 1st timers from being squeamish and dispelling the idea of 'sushi' being just raw fish and rice. Overall, the quality is good if not exceeds any expectations from anything in this town. Surely, this isn't NOBU of NYC. So don't expect any of that here. But I can confidently say the quality is there for the prices offered. read more

I was craving sushi and came across this place on Yelp + it was close by so I decided to give it a shot. First thing, their website prices are not up to date. I went in store and the prices were significantly different as compared to online. It's about $2-3 more. I got the teriyaki salmon bento box with sashimi, crazy monkey, tiger roll and salmon skin hand roll. Everything came out to around $60 before tip. First off the sashimi looked sad and frozen...& the rice from the bento box was dry. My salmon skin HR was also sad.. it was so small and barely any actual salmon skin. Not crispy at all. Of my two rolls, I enjoyed the tiger. My favorite part was probably the yellow pickled and unagi. The crazy monkey was averaged and the salmon on top tasted weird. Onto the service, (I called for take out) they said it would take about 20-30 mins. So I arrived about 30 mins and they still didn't have my order ready. The cashier / server was pretty rude.. not only to me but the other customer as well. And when I asked for an itemized receipt (because the total was a huge difference instead of around $45 it was like around $60 which is basically another roll) she said they don't have it... so she just wrote the prices on a piece of paper... LOL what? Overall, it wasn't the woooorse sushi but it definitely was nowhere near best. Definitely did not satisfy my cravings. read more

We ordered two bentos with beef teriyaki and chicken katsu to go. Rice and salad were okay but the beef and the chicken were too dry. Not the best I've had but okay. One thing that I can't accept was there was HAIR in my sushi! (See picture) This is just disgusting and we'll never order food here. read more

Food is really good here, and the staff is super friendly. We've ate here 3X, gotten takeout twice now during the pandemic. Most recently is today, Wednesday Feb 3rd, as I type this in my car. I phoned my order in at 6:36 pm, was quoted 20-30 minutes, I've paid and tipped, and am in my car and it's 7:37 pm, 1 hour & 1 minute to get my order to me. I don't feel comfortable blasting these guys completely and giving them 1 or 2 stars because it's a nice friendly family owned business. They're very nice and polite, and make a great meal. You can't leave people waiting in their cars an hour for take out though, not an hour from when you said the food would be ready. It's just flat out not acceptable. I'll try and throw more business there way, but this problem needs to get fixed ASAP. At the very least, quote people longer time for the food to be ready, if they can't handle that, then they can dine elsewhere. I think they'll find most people would be willing to wait, at least I could show up when I know my food is done or close to it, but an hour? C'mon now. read more

If you're looking for a good California roll then I guess this is your place but if not, you should look somewhere else because every single role is essentially the same thing. If you go down the list of sushi rolls, everything is crab meat, and avocado with some slight variation. Located in Tracy and one of the few Japanese restaurants open till 9pm on a Sunday. They are open almost everyday of the week but closed on Tuesdays. Very small inside with a welcoming staff and ambiance. They have take out options as well if preferred. Other restaurant locations in Lodi, Galt, Stockton and also Discovery Bay. Different locations have different days of operation so check with their website. We ordered the Vegetable tempura and Gyoza to start. Both came out very quickly and was cooked perfectly. For our main course we ordered the Chicken Teriyaki Bento box which was good and the table shared the Golden Dragon & Spider-Man Rolls. Both rolls were very tasty and even had the special request right with cashews on half the Spider-Man roll. All in all this is a great spot for Japanese dining. Very clean, friendly and fast staff with delicious food. Highly recommend! read more

Great sushi restaurant. I ordered a Red Dragon sushi roll and a tempura appetizer. I opted to door dash this order and it promptly arrived. Much to my surprise the red dragon had a personalized message written on the box lid. "Happy New Year" Gary C. And my favorite restaurateur Robert signed it. A nice gesture for the New Year. Now for the food. My Red Dragon roll was spot on. Spicy tuna and a tempura shrimp. Nearly arraigned and included the pickled ginger and a good amount of their awesome Wasabi. Now for the Tempura appetizer. All of the items were cooked perfect and still warm. The tempura dipping sauce was great as usual. If you are considering a good sushi or Japanese style meal you can't go wrong eating here. Although this particular meal was door dashed. I've eaten inside their restaurant and it is a nice atmosphere and very clean. The proprietor "Robert" is a nice guy and the staff are great. They offer Japanese beers and a selection of Sake. Meh. Food was just okay, nothing special. For starters we ordered the garlic edamame as an appetizer, for a restaurant that was not busy at all that evening, they took a fairly long time to bring it out. And when they did, we unfortunately had to send it back because there was TOO MUCH GARLIC. I'm taking an insane amount. The edamame on top of that was over cooked/steamed because it was so soft. The garlic, as mentioned was just far too much and my family and I love garlic, so for us to say this means something. When they brought it back, it was still super soft and a little less garlicy, but we felt like they just rinsed them off and re-served us. I ordered the Golden Dragon and it was okay. Pretty small roll I'd say compared to other sushi restaurants. There was about 8 slices which typically I feel that sushi restaurants give a little more. I will say the garnishing sauce had a good taste to it, other than that, the roll was nothing special. For 4 rolls and 1 appetizer, we paid a little over $60 which I found to be a little pricey for this small town. read more

This is the last time we will dine here. The staff were very cold, it felt like we were a burden to them. The food was just ok nothing extraordinary. The sizes of the rolls have downsized.... So it's not really worth it. The biggest no no is that they added a 20% service charge to our bill. We were only a party of 4 (2 adults and 2 kids). They had the audacity to add 20%! We went back on a Sunday and once seated, I was ecstatically giddy to see they had a roll called the "Reno Roll"! My first name is Reno so I instantly took ownership over this roll. I ordered it! I ate it! It's mine! The one star off was for not being open on Tuesdays. One would argue that the Reno roll makes up for this. However, I was hangry on that Tuesday!
