I am completely obsessed with Goodtime Bar. I can appreciate their unique selection of wine, as they focus on natural wine. Not my personal cup of tea, but they do also offer sake and a few beers also. The first time we went, we ordered the arancini, bucatini, and the heritage pork katsu. I am a big advocate for trying new things every time I go to a restaurant, but it was so good I ordered the same thing the second time I went. Arancini is flavored with Japanese curry with creamy fontina in the center topped off with kimchi mayo. Holy f. These quite literally put the traditional Italian ones to shame (sorry not sorry). Next was the bucatini. It had tom yum butter, lime, basil- all the fix ins of what you want from tom yum flavors with the luxuriousness added from the butter. It was sinful. Last and certainly not least, is the pork katsu. I cannot even remember the last time I ordered a pork katsu, but something told me to order it. Thank God I did, as it quite literally changed my life. If they ever take it off the menu I am not sure I would be OK. It is crispy and is swimming in this koji butter, but the key is that it is NOT greasy. I quite literally think about it all the time. To the point where I had it twice in a week. Service was great, bartenders are so friendly. The place is cute and vibrant. Keep in mind it is small- limited seating inside and a small patio outside. But so worth the wait. Ambiance 5 Wine 5 Service 5 Food 5 So why the 4 rating... TBH there's a good chance that I'll adjust it soon, but if I could give a 4.5 I would. First the knock, and to be fair, it's probably just an opinion / idea. Given the birth of natural wine and the South Bay, it would be wonderful to see a curated selection of tasting flights, no more than two or three options with anywhere from 3 to 6 wine wines each, priced accordingly. Maintaining a proper wine menu when all you do is natural wine can certainly be a challenge. If you wine flights depending on what you have would certainly elevate the customer experience by educating more people natural wine and helping them make better choices when it comes to a bottle purchase. I paid $61 for a bottle that was recommended, and at that price point I wonder how many people who are new to natural wine might be turned off. Chris was a wonderful host and certainly the right person to engage with customers around their various wines. Given how small the space is and how busy it can get, a weekly tasting flight menu might be a good way to engage those customers who are waiting to order at the bar and perhaps even spark a more productive conversation with Chris. We ordered the peach and ricotta dish with Thai basil... wow, a wonderful surprise. Peaches are always battling in and out of the top spot on my summer fruit list and this combination was downright dirty and delicious! We also ordered the raw oysters with watermelon mignonette. Another wow! I didn't expect the little spice kick and it was a perfect pairing to the sweetness of the watermelon. If anyone knows the recipe let me know, I'd bottle that mignonette and take it with me wherever I have oysters!! My friend and I walked in on a Wednesday night and there were only a few seats filled / no wait time. You get your pick between a few tables indoors/outdoors, the bar, and a couch area which I felt really completed the community-forward space. We ordered at the bar and got a number to take to the table. You're able to sample a few things before deciding on which glass to commit to, which is always nice to have. All of the wines (tried whites, rosé and oranges) and food were amazing and really added to the overall experience! Still thinking about the tuna tostada and tom yum bucatini -- excited to pay them another visit to try more of their food menu. The service was consistent and was another huge plus on our experience. This establishment requires you to order at the bar (makes sense it's a bar), and then they did you a number for the table so they can deliver your food. Any drinks you order they will make it right then and there for you to bring over. In terms of food, here is everything we ordered and my thoughts! *Deviled eggs: You would think since it's deviled eggs, there wouldn't be anything too special about them but I appreciated the small pops of salmon roe that added a nice textural play with the creamy eggs! * Bluefin tostada: Absolutely delicious with fresh tuna, paired with mango, on a crispy wonton chip. What a rich treat. * Arancini: The twist of fusion flavors was great. I love how the Japanese curry added a nice mix of umami, paired with the sharp creamy kimchi sauce. They had hardcore EDM playing, and call me old, but that's the last thing I want to hear at a wine bar on a Saturday night after work. The wine suggested to us also wasn't our favorite. I've had my eye on this spot for a while, but I'm unsure of my feelings on it. Right off the bat, there's only like 3 tables inside but quite a few outside, which makes it a great spot for a warm day but bad for any other weather. You also have to order at the bar, and the food takes a long time to come out. The Arancini was good, very light curry flavor but the kimchi mayo was good. I would pass on the beef tartare, it was just okay. The tom yum bucatini seemed to be really popular on social media, but it was sooo salty. I've been wanting to try out the Goodtime Bar for a while, so I decided to walk on in at odd hour on Saturday. Expecting to just get a single glass and a snack for a quick tasting. Even at that odd hour, there weren't any seats left inside so I just hanged around the bar counter with a glass standing and they were nice enough to just serve me there. The bar has a large collection of the natural wines and the staff were very knowledgeable and kind, and the whole vibe felt like a good time. I saw the steak frites, and it looked so good, but the plate looked quite huge! But I couldn't resist, and decided to order the whole plate and oh my was it worth it. The steak was juicy, prime rib eye, medium rare on the rare side. So juicy, meaty, soft, but not too soft still retaining tasty texture to bite into. But what really elevated the steak was the yuzu and peppercorn. The spice was there distinctly to augment the steak, yet, it never got in the way of the fabulous taste of the rib eye. Top it all off, the fries were crispy with right touch of the salt. Together a perfect dish. I finished the whole big plate easy in probably less than 20 min. But wait, this is a bar after all. What took the whole experience to the zenith was the wine pairing. I've asked the bar tender what would go well with the steak plate and he recommended me the some red, sparkling natural wine. The wine was unique in that it looked like, but wasn't like a rose. Some how it was light and bubbly yet it retained the deep complex flavor of the red. Swirling, the wine refreshing the flavor of the steak while the steak complementing to the flavor of the wine. This wine, was a perfect match to complete the meal. The whole plate truly worked in unison, kudos to the chef, and the bartender! (In fact, the chef was mozying around the bar and I had to express my gratitude, but he seemed rather, not to the point of annoyed, but indifferent to it lol) I had to get more. I ordered the bluefin tuna and oh my. The tuna was so darn fresh, strong fresh flavor of tuna, with the lime zest and the sauce to give the right kick, all on the tostada crunch. The wine pairing was again immaculate. The whole tostada was gone before I truly knew what had happened. I then saw people ordering the creme brulee. I was pretty stuffed at this point but I had to get it. Red miso, madagascar brulee, what an odd combination I thought. But I do remember the sweet can go so well with salty and this was the testament to it. Brulee was soft, creamy, eggy, sweet, the potent swath of vanilla, but that hint of red miso, empowered the flavor and the scent that each scoop and the bite I took was kept emboldened. We had a party of 4 and ended up waiting around 10-15 minutes for a larger table inside to open up. There's a decent amount of outdoor seating if you don't mind that, too. It got way busier around 7pm when we left, so plan accordingly. I did enjoy sitting outside with the lighting and music. DISHES: Arancini -- I was skeptical about kimchi + arancini ... trust! This was our choice for a girls' night out. It started as a relatively casual restaurant, which later turned into a club-like place with a DJ later in the night. I will say, the food is fantastic. Everything we ordered from the oyster starters to the steak was great. I do suggest ordering smaller plates and trying out the various options they have. Service was personable too. Newly opened, I think they are trying to establish their customer-base. To address the rumors, I do want to say that it is Vietnamese-owned (in a lot of the IG posts, I read that it was a Korean-owned restaurant). Not that any of this matters lol but did want to correct that misinformation. Lastly, why the four stars. Just a preference for me, organic/natural wine is not my jam. Goodtime Bar isn't just one of the best wine bars in SJ, it's hands down one of the best restaurants in the Bay Area PERIOD! This popular hotspot is one the best new things to happen to Downtown San Jose in a long time. They have an extensive collection of unusual wines (as well as sake, zero proof drinks, and some beers) by the glass, where you just let the helpful bartenders know your tastes and preferences and they're happy to pour you a taste until you find something you like. But for me at least, where they really shine is their food. Chef Alex Whiteman creates an ever changing list of shareable small plates (with some signature staples that can never leave) that are some of the most creative food in the Bay. We got to try a few drinks that were picked out based on our preferences and then we chose which glass we wanted which created such a fun experience. (They serve food here too!) We tried to go to Good Time Bar a couple of times, but unfortunately, each time we encountered loooong wait times. Thankfully, on a slower Thursday, we were able to snag a table inside for a party of 4. We each ordered different drinks to try all of them seemed interestingly experimental and quite different from what we were used to (in a fun way). Two drinks that stuck out were the pickle beer and the yuzu spritz. The pickle beer tasted so much like pickles ... duh, but it was a lot better than expected. It was definitely cool to try, but honestly would not order it again. I thought the yuzu spritz was refreshing and the right balance of citrus and it paired nicely with our wide range selection of food. We decided to do family style between our group before we realized how small the portions were. We ordered the pork belly, chips and dip, mussels, bucatini, and bluefin tostada. The pork belly was so flavorful and truly melted in your mouth with each bite. The chips and dip were the best app and were truly a snack you could not stop eating. The mussels were cooked perfectly with a refreshing tomato butter sauce. The bucatini truly captured the tom yum taste; it was the most interesting pasta I've had in a while (in the best way). Lastly, the bluefin tostada was good, nothing special, but still good to try while there. Although all the food we had was quite yummy, I think our group size was larger than what the portions were meant to feed. I don't think I would come back with a large group, as I feel like you would really need to stack the bill for everyone to leave full. I also don't think I would come back for a full dinner service; that was our mistake. We should have looked at the portion sizes more. However, I think this place is perfect for a cute date night or for you to check out with one other person, as the food and drinks were great. I came with a group of 8 and we reserved a table which I would recommend as much in advance as possible. It very vibes inside but there is also outdoor seats. The staff is very knowledgeable about wines and recommendations. We got the steak frites per recommendation which is pretty worth the try. I also tried my friends pickle beer which was surprisingly tasty, it does have a pickle taste is you don't like that I wouldn't recommend but worth trying for sure!! read more

Went here for a date night and it was such a cute and cozy spot! We ordered at the bar and the bartender gave us free wine tastings before ordering which was super helpful in informing or drink orders. We ended up getting wine, tom yum pasta, Caesar salad, and a tuna tostada. The salad was my favorite (I'm a sucker for Caesar salad loaded with freshly grated parm and fancy greens). The tom yum pasta was also really good and creative. We weren't sure how tom yum would work in a pasta dish but it was delightfully spicy, sour, and creamy. read more

I don't recommend going to Goodtime Bar. We sat there for about 20 minutes and weren't able to put in an order. We sat there because the bartender told us that she would come by to get our order, but that never came. Most of the bar/restaurant was empty but we were never served. There were other people who came in after us who ordered and were served before us. I'm glad that we left to try another place to eat. Angkor Chef right down the street serves beautiful Cambodian food with great service and nice ambiance. I highly recommend against going to Goodtime Bar due to low-quality service and wait times. read more

Goodtime Bar is such a cool spot -- even if natural wine isn't totally my thing (just being honest!). I do love that they support local natural wineries and always have a rotating selection of bottles from many different regions. But for me, the real star here is the food. Let's talk about the fingerling potatoes. If I could only eat one potato dish for the rest of my life, it would be this one. The seaweed mayo sauce is to die for -- I wish they sold it by the bottle (I'd probably drink it... gross, I know, but it's that good). Besides the potatoes, the chips and dip is also incredible. That crème fraîche dip is just *chef's kiss*. Honestly, everything I've tried on the menu has been amazing! Major kudos to the chef. Also, they have Dole whip -- and not the sad imitation kind you find at random yogurt shops. This one actually (almost) lives up to the Disneyland version. Creamy, smooth, and not icy like most others. One of the best soft serves I've had outside the park. The vibe at Goodtime? Always on point. Cozy, cute, and there's almost always a DJ spinning or the disco ball's going. Come for the wine if that's your thing, but definitely stay for the food. read more

Employees are super friendly and we didn't feel rushed to finish and leave! Orancello spritz: 4/5 - looks and tastes like a sangria which I love! Yuzu spritz: 4:5 - light, refreshing, and a great pairing for different dishes Orange wine: 4/5 - light, smooth, and refreshing - paired nicely with the tuna pate! Deviled eggs: 4/5 - creamy, easy to eat, and flavorful! - ikura (salmon roe) provided lil bursts of flavor - loved the slight crunch throughout Fingerling potatoes: 5/5 - this was soooo yummy! flavors worked so well together - shiso adds complexity to the seaweed mayo and pickled shallots - definitely recommend and will order this again Tom yum bucatini: 5/5 - flavor bomb ‍ savory, a little tart, and a slight kick - loved the mint leaves on top that added complexity too Spicy tuna pate: 3.5/5 - a lil different from what I expected! Not sure why I never left a review for this spot. It's a small place. But it's pretty much always packed. They had the alcoholic dole whip float before that I really liked, but the last time I came for dinner, they didn't have it on the menu anymore. Their food items were delicious and innovative, but the portions are teeny for the price point. Hopefully they will improve that. read more
