What a good time at the Goodtime Bar! Came on a Tuesday after work around 6:30 for dinner with some coworkers and it was still pretty empty. They're a natural wine bar so of course we got some natural wine. I went with what the bartender suggested - orange wine which paired well with the rigatoni. Apps were yummy, I could eat 4-5 of their deviled eggs. Moules frites were a hit too, the sauce was delicious and would highly recommend dipping the fries in the sauce. I got the corn rigatoni which was heavy but also delicious. Crème bruleee was good but really wanted to try the panna cotta and they were out. OMG, I am truly impressed with the food here! Most restaurants have at least one so-so dish, but not Goodtime Bar. Went here on a Saturday night with a girlfriend and we ordered: Steak Fries, Bucatini Pasta, Clams, Tomato & Cheese Dip (AMAZING! ) In fact, every single dish was completely on point. The vibe inside is super fun--there's a tiny bar lit up by a spinning disco ball. However, the ordering process is pretty disconnected and chaotic. You normally have to order food and drinks at the bar, but because the entire interior was so packed with people waiting for tables and pre-dinner drinks, the host kindly offered to help us at our table. I am completely obsessed with Goodtime Bar. I can appreciate their unique selection of wine, as they focus on natural wine. Not my personal cup of tea, but they do also offer sake and a few beers also. The first time we went, we ordered the arancini, bucatini, and the heritage pork katsu. I am a big advocate for trying new things every time I go to a restaurant, but it was so good I ordered the same thing the second time I went. Arancini is flavored with Japanese curry with creamy fontina in the center topped off with kimchi mayo. Holy f. These quite literally put the traditional Italian ones to shame (sorry not sorry). Next was the bucatini. It had tom yum butter, lime, basil- all the fix ins of what you want from tom yum flavors with the luxuriousness added from the butter. It was sinful. Last and certainly not least, is the pork katsu. I cannot even remember the last time I ordered a pork katsu, but something told me to order it. Thank God I did, as it quite literally changed my life. If they ever take it off the menu I am not sure I would be OK. It is crispy and is swimming in this koji butter, but the key is that it is NOT greasy. I quite literally think about it all the time. To the point where I had it twice in a week. Service was great, bartenders are so friendly. The place is cute and vibrant. Keep in mind it is small- limited seating inside and a small patio outside. But so worth the wait. First the knock, and to be fair, it's probably just an opinion / idea. Given the birth of natural wine and the South Bay, it would be wonderful to see a curated selection of tasting flights, no more than two or three options with anywhere from 3 to 6 wine wines each, priced accordingly. Maintaining a proper wine menu when all you do is natural wine can certainly be a challenge. If you wine flights depending on what you have would certainly elevate the customer experience by educating more people natural wine and helping them make better choices when it comes to a bottle purchase. I paid $61 for a bottle that was recommended, and at that price point I wonder how many people who are new to natural wine might be turned off. Chris was a wonderful host and certainly the right person to engage with customers around their various wines. Given how small the space is and how busy it can get, a weekly tasting flight menu might be a good way to engage those customers who are waiting to order at the bar and perhaps even spark a more productive conversation with Chris. We ordered the peach and ricotta dish with Thai basil... wow, a wonderful surprise. Peaches are always battling in and out of the top spot on my summer fruit list and this combination was downright dirty and delicious! We also ordered the raw oysters with watermelon mignonette. Another wow! I didn't expect the little spice kick and it was a perfect pairing to the sweetness of the watermelon. If anyone knows the recipe let me know, I'd bottle that mignonette and take it with me wherever I have oysters!! I came here with a party of 8 for a birthday celebration. There are no reservations, just walk-in / first come first serve basis. The bar was pretty busy with groups at all the tables so we had to sit outside on stools at a fold up table. You walk inside to place an order then you get seated at a table. if you're looking for a laid-back but still curated vibe, highly recommend paying Goodtime Bar a visit! My friend and I walked in on a Wednesday night and there were only a few seats filled / no wait time. You get your pick between a few tables indoors/outdoors, the bar, and a couch area which I felt really completed the community-forward space. We ordered at the bar and got a number to take to the table. You're able to sample a few things before deciding on which glass to commit to, which is always nice to have. All of the wines (tried whites, rosé and oranges) and food were amazing and really added to the overall experience! In terms of food, here is everything we ordered and my thoughts! *Deviled eggs: You would think since it's deviled eggs, there wouldn't be anything too special about them but I appreciated the small pops of salmon roe that added a nice textural play with the creamy eggs! * Bluefin tostada: Absolutely delicious with fresh tuna, paired with mango, on a crispy wonton chip. What a rich treat. * Arancini: The twist of fusion flavors was great. I love how the Japanese curry added a nice mix of umami, paired with the sharp creamy kimchi sauce. They had hardcore EDM playing, and call me old, but that's the last thing I want to hear at a wine bar on a Saturday night after work. The wine suggested to us also wasn't our favorite. It was a Chardonnay that almost tasted more like cognac, which just wasn't for us. For food, we tried the deviled eggs, hamachi tostada, prawns, bucatini, and steak frites. I've been wanting to try out the Goodtime Bar for a while, so I decided to walk on in at odd hour on Saturday. Expecting to just get a single glass and a snack for a quick tasting. Even at that odd hour, there weren't any seats left inside so I just hanged around the bar counter with a glass standing and they were nice enough to just serve me there. The bar has a large collection of the natural wines and the staff were very knowledgeable and kind, and the whole vibe felt like a good time. I saw the steak frites, and it looked so good, but the plate looked quite huge! But I couldn't resist, and decided to order the whole plate and oh my was it worth it. The steak was juicy, prime rib eye, medium rare on the rare side. So juicy, meaty, soft, but not too soft still retaining tasty texture to bite into. But what really elevated the steak was the yuzu and peppercorn. The spice was there distinctly to augment the steak, yet, it never got in the way of the fabulous taste of the rib eye. Top it all off, the fries were crispy with right touch of the salt. Together a perfect dish. I finished the whole big plate easy in probably less than 20 min. But wait, this is a bar after all. What took the whole experience to the zenith was the wine pairing. I've asked the bar tender what would go well with the steak plate and he recommended me the some red, sparkling natural wine. The wine was unique in that it looked like, but wasn't like a rose. Some how it was light and bubbly yet it retained the deep complex flavor of the red. Swirling, the wine refreshing the flavor of the steak while the steak complementing to the flavor of the wine. This wine, was a perfect match to complete the meal. The whole plate truly worked in unison, kudos to the chef, and the bartender! (In fact, the chef was mozying around the bar and I had to express my gratitude, but he seemed rather, not to the point of annoyed, but indifferent to it lol) I had to get more. I ordered the bluefin tuna and oh my. The tuna was so darn fresh, strong fresh flavor of tuna, with the lime zest and the sauce to give the right kick, all on the tostada crunch. The wine pairing was again immaculate. The whole tostada was gone before I truly knew what had happened. I then saw people ordering the creme brulee. I was pretty stuffed at this point but I had to get it. Red miso, madagascar brulee, what an odd combination I thought. But I do remember the sweet can go so well with salty and this was the testament to it. Brulee was soft, creamy, eggy, sweet, the potent swath of vanilla, but that hint of red miso, empowered the flavor and the scent that each scoop and the bite I took was kept emboldened. This was our choice for a girls' night out. It started as a relatively casual restaurant, which later turned into a club-like place with a DJ later in the night. I will say, the food is fantastic. Everything we ordered from the oyster starters to the steak was great. I do suggest ordering smaller plates and trying out the various options they have. Service was personable too. Newly opened, I think they are trying to establish their customer-base. To address the rumors, I do want to say that it is Vietnamese-owned (in a lot of the IG posts, I read that it was a Korean-owned restaurant). Not that any of this matters lol but did want to correct that misinformation. Lastly, why the four stars. Just a preference for me, organic/natural wine is not my jam. Goodtime Bar isn't just one of the best wine bars in SJ, it's hands down one of the best restaurants in the Bay Area PERIOD! This popular hotspot is one the best new things to happen to Downtown San Jose in a long time. good time bar is such a vibe! The food is yummy, the people who work there are amazing and it's just overall a good place to chill. It's like Japanese inspired food with a European inspired vibe, right here in the Bay Area and I'm obsessed! I got there as soon as they opened and the staff welcomed me in. Came to yap with a girl friend who was visiting and we never felt rushed. It's not very large inside but there is also outdoor seating with heat lamps. Everything we had was so incredibly good, I'm still thinking about it. The leek confit was chef's kiss, I wanted to lick the plate. I didn't get a picture of the pork belly but it was phenomenal and the perfect level of fatty. A complete hidden gem. The food was pure perfection. I've never had a better more elevated tostada and the summer peaches, too die for! The bucatini is enough to dream about. I love it here!!!! My friend and I came on New Year's Eve and we arrive right when it opened at 4pm. The service was amazing and thoughtful. We got to try a few drinks that were picked out based on our preferences and then we chose which glass we wanted which created such a fun experience. (They serve food here too!) The spot itself feels like a hidden gem! There are a few tables inside maybe about 3 or 4 and outdoor seating as well. We sat in their small couch area which was comfy and cozy for us to sip and chat. I did see a sign that it's a shared space and they ask for a 90 min limit so that other ppl can also use the space.
