I recently saw Strāta while passing city hall. The former establishment was an Italian restaurant we frequented and also had our small wedding reception, so I was curious about the new spot and feeling a bit nostalgic. I made dinner reservations for 4 at 5pm on a Sunday. I honestly thought the interior looked exactly the same. Maybe a different paint job? The restaurant was just as elegant as I remembered though. We had a table towards the front of the restaurant in the lounge/bar area. It was a nice change as we were always seated in the main dining room. Service was excellent. Francesca was our main server, but she was helped by one of her colleagues. Both were awesome, and there was essentially no gap in assistance. Food came out quicky too, which is always a plus. We ordered items to share including the layered potato app, octopus app, scallops entree, and burger. The scallops dish was the best in my opinion. Plump scallops over a flavorful puree. The burger was solid, and I especially loved the fries. The octopus and potato were delicious in their own right. I was highly satisfied with the overall taste and presentation of everything I ate. 3.5 Stars.. I was *so* excited to try this place out because of the other reviewers. Don't get me wrong. The place is gorgeous inside and a welcome addition to Downtown SJ. The service was great and so was the nice blend of old skool hip hop music that was playing inside. So why not 5 stars from me? The food just wasn't as good as I thought it would be. Let's get down to it. **Bread & butter $12-- First off, the presentation was excellent. The little mini buns looked like shiny poofy marshmallows. But once I took my first bite, I was so disappointed. The bread itself was on the dry side. The "parmesan rind cultured" butter had zero taste of parmesan in it. **Wings $18 seasoned with house ramen powder, sesame egg yolk jam, chives-- These were probably the best thing on the menu as I've never seen wings filleted into little french fry like strips. They were juicy and unique. However it seemed like they were chopped up so we could get less of a serving. **Rockfish crudo $18--steak soy aguachile, chili oil, serrano, shallots, cilantro, crispy rice $18-- Really nice presentation and the fish was fresh. The sauce was a great accompaniment, but I couldn't help but think about Trifecta's sushi when I ate this. If I had to pick, I'd go to Trifecta. **Burger $28--8oz dry aged chuck, garlic aioli, white cheddar, balsamic red onions 28-- First off, we asked for medium and the burger came on the rare side. We didn't want to complain so we ate it as is. The meat itself was tender and juicy but I just didn't feel like this was better than other burgers I've tried. Fries were also forgettable. The staff is very attentive, engaging, and will go out of their way to ensure you're comfortable. Unfortunately, the drinks and food do not match the vibe and price point (yet). I know they just opened up, so I'm sure it'll get better. But for now, I'll have to stick with an honest opinion and share our May experience. We tried several of their drinks and were not impressed, especially for the price point. None were memorable, so that tells you everything you need to know. We did their seasonal tasting menu. Their tuna tostada and pork torta were interesting, in a good way. Their crudo was my favorite of the night; very fresh fish and delightful agiachile. My husband's brodo was lovely, but my chicken fried morrels (which cost an extra $15) were overcooked and dry. I was very disappointed as I love stuffed morrels. The prime NY my hubby got was good. But my chicken roulade was very underseasoned, one-note and on the dry side, once again. I would skip the soft serve, but the chocolate hazelnut desert was fire. I don't think I got my money's worth, but my hubby was happy. I love Chef Roberto's food from Alter Ego and will definitely come back to give them another try. read more

We came here to celebrate my best friends birthday and to start the ambiance is nice, it does have a lot of moody lighting and their is parking garage behind the restaurant. The drinks we got were good and pretty and probably the best part of the place. But after that the service was very slow, as some dishes took over an hour to come out. We did family style and honestly each plate we got, we could only get one bite from. The plates are very small for the price. The prime ny that was $65 was 4 small pieces of steak and honestly we were expecting a larger piece of meat that we could share for the price that other steakhouses normally have. At the beginning of the dinner they acknowledged we had a birthday, but never did anything or offered anything for birthday at the end. All of us have worked as servers in restaurants before, so we understand proper service and we just did not get what we should have for a higher end restaurant. I want downtown businesses to work. I've been rallying for more upscale businesses, just like Strata. But Strata...you have some work to do to get me back in. Vibe and atmosphere is top notch, something that makes downtown proud. Servers are top notch, friendly, and know their products. Sadly, that's where the compliments end. I have a hard time paying $11 for a lumpia. Yes, a single lumpia. Charge $15 and put two on the plate, and I'll order it again. Fries that accompanied the burger were so salty I would have thought the chef forgot he salted them and gave it an extra dose. Plus the burger was ordered medium, it came dry and overcooked. Dishes were not timed correctly, and were brought to the table as they came off the line. Sadly, one person got their entree super late after following up and everyone was almost done eating. To the restaurant's credit, this item was not charged. Speaking about charge, you're an upscale place with upscale prices. Why nickel and dime me and charge 5% credit card fee? Just about everyone uses a card these days, and I just feel that's a useless charge. Absorb it somewhere. That's something I usually see at my local hairdresser. The issue we had was we were there to celebrate a birthday. Since it was in the reservation the hostess wished us a happy birthday. Being a fine dining experience, I assumed that that information had been conveyed to the server, but apparently not. After the dessert arrived with no fanfare I brought it up to the waitress. I really enjoyed the courses on the prix fixe I picked the chicken and it was good. I had the hazelnut chocolate dessert and didn't share . The staff was attentive and the lounge was really cute. Rollati was one of my favorite restaurants in Downtown San Jose. It's flagship corner spot anchored the neighborhood, sitting under the MIRO towers across from the iconic San Jose City Hall. While I was sad to see it go, I immediately lit up when I found out the proprietors behind it's replacement are the geniuses behind Eos & Nyx, Alter Ego, Still OG, Paper Plane, and Miniboss. Needless to say expectations were very high for Strata, especially since they are taking a huge risk on the menu. It's the first restaurant in San Jose to open with a Michelin-style fixed price tasting menu. Some like ADEGA have evolved into this type of experience, but Strata is all-in from day one. In the elegant dining room, that is the only option. Fortunately, it's one of the most affordable ones out there at $75 for 5 courses (with some optional supplements). You can also sit at the bar or lounge and order a-la-carte off a more casual menu. In the dining room you can add extra courses from the a-la-carte menu as well (which we did because we were really hungry). The first course was a tuna tostada with salsa macha chorizo, avocado, and cilantro and an al pastor torta with pineapple salsa. They were both delicious and felt like an upscale nod to San Jose's street food scene. Second was our favorite dish of the night. A rockfish crudo in one of the most unique plates I have ever seen. It featured white soy aquachile, serranos, cilantro, and crispy rice. You can also add caviar for an extra $25. I was told it was 1oz, but this is perhaps the one mistake they made on opening day because it was maybe 1/5 that at best. That sauce was so good that we spooned up ever last bit. Third up was a ricotta stuffed tortellini (optional shaved truffle for $15) and chicken friend morrels (extra $15). The morrels were amazing. One of the best mushrooms I have ever had. I should also mention that this restaurant group is know for amazing craft cocktails. I got a Bollywood Old Fashioned with chikoo, popcorn (?), and aromatic bitters. It did not disappoint. The 4th course was the main. We had the rockfish and the chicken roulade. Both were amazing, I'd get either again. The meat and veggies were perfectly seasoned and every sauce really stood out. There was a 3rd option we didn't try which was a Prime NY steak with garlic chive for an extra $25. We also added the burger from the lounge--it was super tasty and guaranteed we'd leave stuffed since we skipped lunch. Last but definitely not least were the desserts. There was a choice of a soft serve passionfruit ice cream with toasted coconut and brown butter crumble or a chocolate hazelnut semifreddo with candied hazelnut and cherries. We got once of each and enjoyed both but the chocolate hazelnut was the standout option. I couldn't leave without trying one more cocktail so I also got a "Tan Lines & Deadlines" for dessert. This was their take on an espresso martini with vodka, cold brew, coconut, turbinado, mole bitters, cinnamon, and salt. Easily one of the best dessert drinks I've had anywhere. To wrap up, this is the new king of date night in San Jose and the benchmark for Downtown San Jose fine dining. Their menu will change every 6-8 weeks, focusing on fresh local ingredients that are in season. It's pricey but overall a good value for the quality of food, service, and ambiance you get. My tip would be to avoid the upcharges and instead add a 6th or 7th course from the bar/lounge menu to try as many different dishes as possible. I hope I'll get try out a few of the different menus this year. I'm very happy to see Strata Downtown and wish them much success. read more

We came in on Friday night around 5:45-6pm for happy hour our Server: Haile. I wanted to like this place, but we left frustrated. My friends and I work in healthcare and stopped in for a quick bite/drink after long shifts before our evening plans. We wanted something simple and fast, an IPA and a shot of Patron. I pointed directly at the menu when ordering. What I received was not what I ordered. Per my receipt, I was charged for a Hazy IPA which I sent back and the other waitress was able to give me the correct IPA, which is more bitter less hazy and Don Fulano tequila, was not Patron, which does not agree with my stomach and I spent the entire night with severe gut-wrenching pain and had to miss our plans in Santana Row. Haile gave me the wrong drink order, due to poor listening skills, not to mention she forgot to put in the order for our food We came in at 5:45/6 for happy hour specifically to pop in quickly, and it took almost an hour to get our food. What we ordered was the crab rolls which came out quickly. We asked for the HH burger medium rare , it came out tough,, well done, stiff as a meatloaf and the flatbread was so undercooked and soggy and gummy. Probably because Haile forgot to order it and they were rushing to get it to our table.. Who knows. I would not order it again. I do want to give credit where it's due , the other waitress on the floor (not Haile) was very attentive. She brought us purse hooks for our bags and was genuinely looking out for us, and we appreciated that. She also had exchange my beer to the correct one. I understand mistakes do happen but order accuracy and timing matter is essential for customer service. I hope management uses this as a coaching moment on listening and confirming orders. She really made our first time at Strāta fantastic - I have not felt so taken care of at a dining establishment in quite some time. She also made some great drink recommendations - the peas & thank you cocktail was a savory delight. Now let's rewind and start from the beginning. Walking in, we were greeted by the hostess and quickly seated (we had a reservation). The ambiance is modern and stylish which is on brand for MO Hospitality and they were playing all the 90s and early 2000s r&b and hip hop hits! We were ambitious and got the potato pave, chicken liver mousse (served with a brioche toast topper), rockfish crudo, seasonal flatbread (with corn, peppers, ramps), scallops, burger (came with a heap of fries) and the chocolate hazelnut semifreddo to finish. Cocktails included after dark, peas & thank you, chrome & silk, and each was well balanced and dangerously smooth. Since we were seated at a smaller table and ordered quite a bit to share, Jomuckha planned out the order in which the dishes would come out instead of having everything come out at once - a thoughtful touch. They even pre-cut the burger for us since we told them we were splitting everything. The standout dishes for me were the rockfish crudo and scallops. Liver mousse was a heavy app and much bigger than we expected but I'll never complain about bigger portions! Throughout the service, multiple waiters came by to refill our waters and refresh our plates and silverware. Attentive but not intrusive. This weekend we came back for our second visit to Strāta. We love that they change up the tasting menu every 6-8 weeks. Even if we like a restaurant, we're not likely to come back all the time to eat the same exact food, so this is a great reason to come back to Strāta often! This trip we also brought a friend who was visiting from out of town. We arrived a bit before our reservation so waited on a couch in the bar area. The waitress that served us there was perfect. She was attentive, offered to get us food menus to review while we waited, walked us through all the choices and was quick with our cocktails which were both interesting and well balanced. I hope they switch up the cocktail menu from time to time as they continue to get settled so we can have new things to try. We then moved into the dining room. All of the staff there were attentive as well. You have a choice between ordering from an ala carte menu or the tasting menu and we did the tasting menu. We didn't end up doing the wine pairing but we were most interested in the sake when our waiter described it. He remembered and brought us a little taste when we got to that course which was most appreciated. For dinner we ordered a bottle of wine. We appreciate the variety on the wine list and that they have so many reasonably priced bottles. We also love the ambiance of Strāta - it feels like a nice restaurant without being stuffy. It's dimly lit but no so dark that you can't see the menu which some places do. The volume is also perfect. We really enjoy the food at Eps & Nyx but it can get SO loud in there. At Strāta, the music is loud enough to be clearly heard but you also can comfortably talk at your table without feeling like you're yelling! Thanks, Strāta team for a great experience. I don't know what was better, the food or the service. We had an incredible time here tonight! Every dish was better than the next. The drinks were great, our server was a doll, and the owner came over several times to check on us an told us about the dishes and make sure everything was up to par (oh boy was it!). The wings are a MUST order! The crudo also will stick with me. Not pictured, we got all 3 desserts, and the were unique and delicious! Service was on point, beautiful set up. We came for the set menu, were walked to the dining room area from the bustling bar. Despite the bar being so busy and visible from the dining room, it was pleasantly quiet in the dining area to where we could chat at our table without yelling unlike some other newer places downtown. Dining room is beautifully decorated. I was however not a huge fan of the water glasses, which were short and awkward...but they were refilled plenty. The best items were the rockfish crudo and the desserts. The pasta was cooked to perfection. Can't believe we saw some folks leave their desserts largely untouched! Cocktails on the pricey side but inventive. Would love to see a NA drink pairing option. Only thing I was mildly disappointed in was the steak. It was cooked perfectly and the sauce was nice but the steak itself tasted unseasoned. A touch of salt on the meat itself would have gone a long way to make it shine. Overall nice premise, good promise. I would go back again for a special occasion meal. read more

Being remembered and welcomed back adds a warm touch that elevates the entire dining experience! Thank you especially to Andromeda, Aaron, Steven, and Ron for your time and attention. -It was a more full and busy restaurant this time around (due, no doubt, to the success of the previous menu) but nothing was lost in the service despite the increased demand. Thank you for making this a priority! Food: -Pork Belly Bun: perfect texture! I'm not usually a fan of pork belly but this was not too chewy and was perfectly spicy! 4.75/5 -Korean Tart: FAVORITE! I would eat a plateful of these. Well rounded sesame flavor and the various textures all come through! Loved the crisp from the cracker and the asian pear on top. The egg yoke jam tastes like you took the best bite of a runny egg. Great combo! 5/5 -Rockfish Crudo: bright flavor! Tastes very yummy and seasonal with the strawberries. Served over a kimchi emulsion with chili oil - just be careful to get a good mix with each spoonful to adjust the chili oil to your preference. Also topped with crown daisy leaves and gochugaru to add even more complex flavor to the Korean theme. Again, love the crunch from the tapioca chicharron- helps make each bite a perfect bite! 4.85/5 -Ricotta Stuffed Tortellini: I can't stress enough my appreciation of having enough tomato, mushroom, and sauce to make each tortellini a perfect bite. Very rich flavor packed in a thin tomato sauce with bright accents from the ricotta. Delicious! 4.9/5 -Rockfish: a substantial dish served with the fried rice! You will not leave here hungry. Like last time, it's ok to order the rockfish twice because they taste very different! The charred Asian pear is so nice! You still get a crunch but a deeper flavor from the char. Needed a spoon to get all the foam to go with each bite. The egg yoke jam is a favorite for adding flavor without adding too much food. I would buy a jar of it! 4.95/5 -Soft Serve: the honey tastes to pure and rich. Definitely high quality! Very good on its own as a sweet treat at the end but even better when eaten with the Bingsu if you have the chance to order both! 4/5 on its own, 5/5 together! -Bingsu: Korean shaved ice with tiramisu, matcha, and strawberries on top! Definitely not too sweet on its own, even with the sweetened condensed milk. I'm a big matcha fan so I was looking forward to this one. 4/5 on its own, 5/5 together! It was like a giant matcha latte. Drinks: -Sunstone cocktail: I'm not normally a fan of mezcal because it can be overpowering, but the smoky flavor doesn't stay and it's sweet at the end. Loved the charred tomato garnish. Yummy and bright, goes well with the welcome bites! 4.8/5 -Riesling: perfect sweet to balance the spicy from the chili oil in the rockfish crudo! 4.9/5 -Sake: FAVORITE! Had to write this one down so I can find it later. Light and crisp, perfect balance with the tortellini! 5/5 -Chenin Blanc: same wine from the previous menu but still works so well with the rockfish. 4.9/5 -Espresso Martini Shooter: so balanced and sweet! Bold enough to keep up with the matcha latte combo dessert. I was wired from double caffeine but totally worth it for the experience! 4.9/5 Extras: -plating is beautiful and purposeful as always on gorgeous handmade ceramics! -disco vibe for the music this time. You can easily hold a conversation, the music is not too loud, and the acoustics of the room don't make it feel like you're only listening the the conversations around you, even as a solo diner. STRĀTA released their 2nd installment of their tasting menu inspired by Korean cuisine and it was an absolute hit. The wines they offered by the glass were thoughtful. These are my highlights: the welcome bite tartare on a nori chip. The honey driven chenin blanc with a strawberry kimchi crudo; The mildly effervescent and floral sake with that steak ssamjang, fresh herbs, and pickled garlic; and a sexy ass moscato with their soft serve. They also offer several supplements from their lounge menu. Do not miss: the chicken liver mousse, the octopus, crab lumpia, steak tartare, or blooming onion & caviar. Strata is such a nice addition to downtown San Jose. The space reminds me of something you'd find in SF or LA. We celebrated two bdays here. Drinks and food were delish. My faves were the chicken fried morrels and the chrome and silk. I usually favor meat dishes but the morrels were actually really meaty. The flavor was so unique that I don't know what to compare it to. The chrome and silk was refreshing without being too light of a drink - it hit just right. Adorable restaurant and had a nice open feeling. We came for dinner and loved all of the decor that felt upscale. I ordered a Float your Boat Cocktail that had rum, coconut orgeat, passion fruit, lime, and jasmine. It was such a good drink with tons of flavor but a decent amount of alcohol! We decided to share some dishes off the la carte menu with small plates. We tried the Steak Tartare w/ filet mignon, aji amarillo aioli, shallot, chive, potato pavé, shiso, and radish. It was amazing and had tons of flavor with decent portion size. We also tried the Ricotta Stuffed Tortellini w/ white verjus beurre monte, legumes, spinach, parmesan. The housemade pasta had a nice flavor swimming in a sauce made with butter and juice. But the portion was so small it was really just for one person. The last dish was the Strata Flatbread which was just so good! Doughy bread with a ton of flavor and big portions for two. Its a little pricy and they do a Prix Menu as well. Service was good and the server was quick with our food. Tons of parking down the street. They do have a happy hour that I would love to check out versus dinner food. I came for the Strata. I stayed because I couldn't find a single layer to complain about. We had the chance to visit Strata for both its pre-opening and grand opening, and somehow they managed to make a great first impression twice. We went with the $75 prix-fixe and wine pairing, which felt like one of the best dining values we've had in a while. Every course earned its place, and the wines weren't just along for the ride... they were true supporting characters. Special shoutout to the sommelier, who made us feel smarter about wine without making us feel dumb about wine. That's a rare talent. And then there's Captain Ron. Every restaurant needs a Captain Ron. He steered the evening flawlessly (nautical pun fully intended), made us feel genuinely welcome, and somehow anticipated what we needed before we did. The food was delicious. The service was exceptional. The vibe struck that sweet spot between polished and comfortable. Safe to say we've already gone twice...which feels like a pretty good indication that this place has us hooked. Here's to Strata's next chapter. The restaurant is seated in the heart of downtown San Jose. A very elegant and classy bar with high ceilings and natural light. Had a few happy hour items to start the meal then moved onto the tasting room. Each course was wonderfully curated. Featured was welcome bites including Al pastor and tuna. Second course agua chile that had a slight kick. Third course was between a mushroom tortellini or morel mushroom. Main course was steaks and rockfish. Ended with a hazelnut ganache ice cream. Went to strata for the first time this past weekend. The drinks were amazing! Ambience was a vibe. It felt dark and each table felt secluded even though they weren't too far from each other. It was a busy night, but it didn't feel too crowded. Food was amazing as well. Loved the tuna, truffle pizza, I'm not very big on octopus but i think that was our tables favorite. Also the waiters knew their drinks so it definitely helped when we asked for advice on which to choose. read more

We came for happy hour on a Thursday. Had the burger and strata flatbread - both were amazing, as well as multiple drinks off their happy hour menu. We also tried a cocktail on their full menu (Peas & Thank you). It was a tasty combination of sweet and vegetable/herbal flavor, and something that we couldn't easily make at home. There was a slight mix-up on charges for the happy hour items, but they graciously made corrections. Overall, a wonderful experience in food, drinks and service. read more

Had an exceptional experience at Strāta in downtown San Jose! The food was creative, beautifully presented, and packed with flavor. You can tell a lot of thought and intention goes into each dish, and the rotating menu keeps things interesting. The cocktails were excellent as well, and the owners and staff did a great job explaining the menu and making us feel welcome. The atmosphere strikes a nice balance between upscale and comfortable, making it a great spot for a date night, celebration, or just a fun dinner out.
