August is one of my favorite places to go for brunch at Santana Row. We've been multiple times, and it's always a great spot for a relaxing weekend meal. I especially love their pancakes, and the crab eggs Benedict is another favorite. The coffee is consistently good, and the staff is always friendly and attentive. What I also love about August is the location and atmosphere. It's the perfect place to sit outside, enjoy brunch, people-watch, and then spend some time strolling around Santana Row afterward. Mezcal Old Fashioned (off the menu) - requested it made w chocolate bitters; bartender came out to table side to inform that he didn't have these on hand, but suggested he use their housemade bitters instead. turned out well! $15 Brucato Woodlands (digestif) hit the spot as a proper after-dinner drink sipped neat. It's a California-made amaro w dominant flavor notes of elderberry, cocoa nibs, black fig, and citrus; glad to see it offered on the menu alongside both green and yellow chartreuses :) Service was excellent even though they were busy at times, our server was thoughtful to check in periodically while bussers were polite. Note: Walk to the bathrooms is long -- need to pass through the entire restaurant and then down a long hallway in the rear, so just keep in mind if you are bringing children or elders. Nearest parking garage is underground but has elevators up to street level and is close to restaurant entrance. Nice date spot! Augustine's coffee has quickly become one of my favorite spots for a grab-and-go coffee at Santana Row. I've tried both their double espresso and their iced coffee, and both were excellent. The coffee was smooth, flavorful, and exactly what I needed. What impressed me the most was how fast the service was. It was even quicker than Blue Bottle, without sacrificing quality. If you're looking for a great coffee on the go, this is definitely worth stopping by. The staff is very friendly as well. My husband and I came for dinner and ordered the Crab Donuts, Herbed Salmon a la Plancha, Grilled Peaches & Stracciatella Salad, Crushed Crispy Potatoes, and the Rigatoni Bolognese. Crab Donuts- The crab filling was flavorful, and the light, golden donut created a nice contrast in texture with the creamy stuffing. Herbed Salmon a la Plancha- This was one of my favorite dishes. I loved the combination of the salty and tangy sauce, the zucchini, and the slight crispness of the salmon skin. Taking a bite together of the salmon, skin, zucchini, and sauce together was delicious. I was surprised. Grilled Peaches & Stracciatella Salad- This was refreshing. The juicy and sweet peaches went so well with the creamy stracciatella, while the arugula added a subtle peppery taste that balanced everything nicely. It almost acted as a palate cleanser for me. Crushed Crispy Potatoes- nicely crisp on the outside with the right amount of saltiness. Simple, but I just wanted to keep eating it. Rigatoni Bolognese - The pasta was cooked al dente and the rich meat sauce was full of flavor. I'd say this was a comforting dish with nice flavors from the meat sauce. The service was fantastic. Our waitress, Sierra, checked on us often, kept our water glasses filled, and cleared our plates promptly throughout the meal. As for the ambiance, we chose to sit indoors, which was quieter and more intimate than the lively outdoor patio. There was a soccer game going on, so the outdoor area had a fun and energetic atmosphere as guests ate and watched the game. Overall, we had a memorable dining experience at Augustine. I came here for a birthday brunch and it was a very pretty restaurant. It's located at Santana Row. When you get there, the restaurant is very pretty and aesthetic. There is seating inside and outside. The service was very attentive. We were a larger group so it took a while to get all of our food. When we got the food, it was not super hot but maybe because it was a large group. The food itself was good, but not super flavorful. The quiche was good, but the croque madame was better. We had some friends visiting from out of town and this place was the best location that worked out for us to meet. After I saw that this restaurant was created by the same group that manages Spruce in San Francisco I became a bit more excited about trying it out. However, I should not have had my hopes up. While the ambiance, decor were definitely on point, and the service was also good, the brunch food unfortunately fell a bit short. I couldn't quite pinpoint this part of it, but my husband pointed it out- the experience itself starts off with the menu, which isn't organized in a classic fashion- they're organized roughly by "sea," "ranch," and for brunch, a separate "brunch " category. Each category mixes all the typical types of dishes, so under "garden" you have all the vegetarian dishes, including appetizers, brunch items, bread and some main courses (like pasta). My other half's comment is that if the food had delivered, or if the waitstaff had been trained to guide us on how to order (perhaps a few small dishes to share, or one from each category etc) this could have been overlooked or seen as a fun whimsical way to dine. Unfortunately neither of those things happened. The waitstaff did ask us if it was our first time dining at the establishment and we confirmed, but then we were just welcomed nicely. The food was priced about what you expect at most places- however the portions were very small. The plating was a bit lackluster- plates seemed too big for the food on the plate, food was placed in a way where it looked like there were empty places where something else could have gone (a lemon wedge? A fresh edible flower? ). The food itself was fine. Just fine. Not amazing. Not bad. Just....fine. I had the poached salmon tartine, and I suppose I was hoping it would be as amazing as the salmon club at Poppy and Claro (that sandwich is out of this world delicious to me- generous portions as well, excellent plating...but they only open on weekdays). We also had the breakfast plate, the lemon pasta (from the "garden" category"). My younger son ended up eating an off the menu mixed fruit bowl which was delicious but..just cut fruit. Good visit with our brother and sister in-law to Augustine. My sister in-law selected Augustine as a go to restaurant since we were visiting from Oregon. I will say the Duck Confit Cannelloni is a bit misleading. I expected more Duck flavor as it was filled with cheese and spinach. My sister in-law loved her Branzino. Our daughter had the Crab Donuts and they were ok. My wife had the Linguine al Limon and loved it. The Basque Cheesecake was a hit. The most popular item on the table were the skinny french fries. The gratineed oysters came out shriveled and were too salty. The citrus cured salmon tartare was the weakest dish of the night. The flavors read like salmon with Montreal seasoning and yuzu, and the textures were off. The burger was fine, fries were standard. Service was actually the most notable part of the meal, and not entirely for good reasons. Food came out promptly and the staff were attentive, but our waiter made a noticeable shift midway through. The "are you good?" check-ins started feeling less like hospitality and more like a nudge toward the door. Dessert menus disappeared quickly and payment followed shortly after. A belated review, but a review nonetheless! I was here for a Galentine's dinner back in February and Augustine did not disappoint! The staff were so nice and attentive, even making sure to place the newest dishes down as we were taking photos. The private room we were in was really nice and luxurious feeling, as we didn't have to shout to hear ourselves over the other patrons' chatter. Highlights for me were the crispy potatoes. Oh, those were perfectly crispy but still soft. I could just eat that! I ordered the burger with fries and the burger was perfectly cooked. The bun was very squishy and all of the flavoring of the meat seeped right into it alongside the cheese. The fries were delicious too! Santana Row has A LOT of new restaurants and we haven't been to any of them. Well, we knocked off 3 (yes, 3!) in one evening: Suspiro, Augustine, and Zazil. Augustine was our second stop, after Suspiro. It was the complete opposite of Suspiro, vibe wise. It was pretty dead inside, darker, more serious, and honestly, we were a little worried. But we sat down at the bar and ordered two drinks (a clarified Long Island iced tea and The Aficionado with tequila, mezcal, braulio, maple syrup, walnut, and angostura bitters), truffle french fries, and a duck confit cannelloni. The cocktails were solid, but it was the service and food that impressed us. They were just super attentive and brought me all the sauces for the French fries - ketchup, aioli, and a crème fraîche with chives - which were perfectly made with real black truffles. The duck confit cannelloni could have been too rich, but it wasn't. Everything was understated, but just done really well. We were surprised! This was our second favorite of the night. read more

Came here for my 10 year anniversary and was super let down by the experience. We were sat by the host and our server didn't come to check on us or greet us at all until 15-20 minutes later. My favorite was the linguine and truffle fries. My partner asked for salt and our server deadass reached over to the table next to us (who just left) and gave us their used salt ramekin (that you dip your fingers in). Menu was explained in a clunky way- "just look at the prices to see what's a tapas size vs main size" is not helpful. During ordering, the waiter kept trying to get us to order more. When we asked which of two things were better, he insisted we just get both. I mean- just tell us because we were only going to order one more thing! After food came out, the waiter never came back to check on us. Water ran dry with no refill. Dishes took forever to clear, and check took forever to come out. - Salmon Tartare, $24 (5*) Wow wow wow! Excellent salmon tartare. The toasted rice added a delightful textural component. The little pops of spice from the peppers was perfect. - Vegetable Salad, $22 (5*) Hard to be inventive with salad, and we were a bit surprised to hear there was no dressing. But truly none was needed! The orange, beet, dill, goat cheese mixture in one bite was perfect! - Duck Confit Cannelloni, $30 (4*) Really flavorful bites. Just wish there was a little something fresh to cut through the richness. - Beef Kefte, $18 (3*) Despite being described as ultra tender, I found these, while flavorful, to be a bit on the dry side. - Value (4*) For well executed food in reasonable portions set in Santana Row ambiance... pretty good. - Final Word Some real standouts in food make me want to come back and try more. So many places on Santana Row are gimmicky. This is not one of those. They could reorganize or explain the menu better and really need to improve the service. This was my first time attending this particular bakery since my friend told me about it. She brought me a croissant from them and it was honestly the best croissant I've had in a long time!! I wanted to check out the actual store and see what other options they had. It's my surprise. There were a number of pastries at this Wednesday afternoon, and I was very excited!! The store itself was rather small, but there were a lot of table seats nearby and they had an outdoor patio area. I wish I could've bought a coffee, but I just finished lunch and was getting a pastry for later. I got three different kinds of pastries, A morning bun, a croissant and a cookie. (4) Rotisserie Chicken - this was tasty, but I wouldn't say it was mind-blowing or unique in any way. Chicken was juicy & had a good lemon/dill flavor; this was also one of the larger shareable dishes which makes it an easy addition. (5) Hand Rolled Cavatelli pasta - super tasty & a must order for me! The hand rolled pasta had the most unique texture + a yummy red sauce & fresh dallop of cheese on top = heaven. (6) Seared Scallops - this was surprisingly sooo good!! Scallops were cooked perfectly, but it was really the unique tomato sauce & grilled onions that stole the show. Cocktails - don't remember what we got but they were all pretty light and simple in taste. I think the martini like drink was def. the most boozy but I wouldn't say it was well balanced or complex. Def. had some amazing dishes here but also sometimes still question if it warrants portion or price. While we were excited to come, we were left sorely disappointed in the end In terms of service, it did take a while for a server to notice us. We've been for dinner and now brunch. The food, atmosphere and service are amazing. Well worth the higher price tag. For brunch, came on a Sunday afternoon. We were seated right away and sat on the patio. There are heat lamps. I had an espresso martini to start. On the sweeter side but I liked it. Had the ingenious crab eggs Benedict as my main. Wow!
