We were trying to get our waitress, Esmeralda, for 10 minutes looking to order our last batch of happy hour menu items at 5:50 pm. Apparently that is too close to the end of happy hour at 6 pm because you're going to wait longer than 10 minutes to even be able to flag her down. I saw that she was being a host and bringing people to their tables outside while I was inside a table inside trying to flag her down without being too aggressive. When I was finally able to flag her down, it was 6:03 and she said there was nothing she could do to get in the last happy hour even though we've been trying to get her. And after I mentioned that, she immediately became defensive and said she was always nearby and it was our fault for not being able catch her earlier. I understand that's good that she was seating people and that it was busy but you can't blame me for missing the happy hour time when I've been trying to call the one waitress over. I think this restaurant needs to get more waiters who are not double shifting as a host too or at least check up on people near the end of happy hour so they're not missing out and leaving a bad experience. Or better yet, just increase their happy hour past a literal one hour. Overall the food is good, drinks are good, the service is too slow at times. A friend and I decided to spend Galentine's Day with dinner at this place. The reviews and the menu looked great, so I made a reservation for Friday at 6:00 p.m. Since this is in downtown San Jose and parking can be awful, I called ahead to ask about parking availability. Jon returned my call and mentioned that the parking structure across the street offers free parking for the first 90 minutes, with minimal charges afterward. This is usually true unless there's an event at the SAP Center, in which case parking is paid. On the day of our reservation, we left early to account for traffic and parking. I'm glad we did, because I couldn't initially find the parking structure and spent about 10 minutes circling downtown. Eventually, I took a chance, and parking ended up being easy to find in the structure that evening. From there, it was less than a one‑minute walk to the restaurant via the San Pedro side. There's plenty of outdoor seating. I didn't notice heating lamps, but I assume they have some. The restaurant faces a street closed to traffic, so there are only pedestrians and rickshaws, which makes it very pleasant to sit outside without dealing with cars. We chose to sit inside since it was chilly. We were seated immediately, though it took a while for the server to come over--I had to catch her eye to get service. Once we did, the service was great. The menu features small plates meant to be shared, though the prices are standard. We shared a cheese board with three cheeses and accompaniments, a plate of three small empanadas, a beef slider, and beignets for dessert. The total came to about $100. The restaurant was almost full and noisy, which was expected, but the music was unnecessarily loud. The bread and cheese were delicious. The empanadas could have been better (they lacked flavor), and the slider was satisfying. After the small portions for the main meal, we were pleasantly surprised by the beignets--we received six generously sized beignets with caramel and chocolate sauce, and they were the highlight of the meal. There were plenty of vegetarian options on the menu, as well as some gluten‑free choices. I also tried the bubbly flight, and the pours were generous for the price. The drink menu is extensive. Okay, we love the food and the drinks here, the ambiance is great, yet what kills me is at how inefficient this operation is and it only seems to be getting worse. This is our 3rd time here and it's gotten amply worse with each go over the last year. Management needs to figure it out and decide on being a high end restaurant with wait times or registrations, not churning people that are borderline pissed off like I was waiting for 40 mins with a half empty restaurant. On Super Bowl Sunday weekend, you can't be shedding people from line with a freaking half empty restaurant as this looks and reflects really badly on District. My three suggestions for improvements to help destress your staff and also optimize the operation to give it this very high end feel that it has and can be: 1) Limit the food menu as right now it's too diverse and clogs the wait times for food turnaround 2) Reduce the kinds of cocktails that are made or create a set specialized menu to not bog the bartender down with side drinks 3) Remove reservations from being an option or tighten up the reservation timeframe to reduce downtime in the restaurant This restaurant was operating at 50% capacity today following clean-up from a party that ended 3 hours prior to us showing up after 8:30 pm (party ended at 5 pm) and the fact that there were reservations and people not there on time nor accounting for the Super Bowl weekend is such nonsense!!! You also are stressing your staff out who understand time pressure and do not need to feel this from inefficiencies set by ownership. Food pictured below and definitely wanted to enjoy dessert yet couldn't give another 30 minutes of our time here tonight. Hopefully this changes in the future so we can come back and until then, I gave this place 5 stars for the first 2 rounds and had high hopes that it would change in between after settling in further and it hasn't. read more

My foodie Friend and I were walking her dog and we were actually walking to the coffee shop down the way when she noticed their sandwich board sign out in front stating they had happy hour and! We had to go check it out!! I went to the bar to ask if we could sit outside and the bartender gladly seated us after checking the weather app on his phone! So sweet! It was actually raining often on earlier and we didn't think about it! Lol we were really just excited about oysters! The drinks were perfectly balanced with a little kick thanks to the bartender, Travis and the oysters were freaking huge!! It was two for one during their happy hour, so we got a dozen and two well drinks! The Moscow mules were perfect!! We were thoroughly impressed with the ambience inside the restaurant as well as their rustic modern look. Outside it was a traditional patio lake setting with heat lamps! Everyone can order family style for the table and nothing is really meant to be had individually. I find that at company events if people can order for themselves, they tend to do so. Our table had 10 people and we did not sign a contract this time. We came on a Tuesday around 5 PM and were able to be seated after the servers pushed a few tables together for our party. The caviar was fresh and served as it should be- on a marble spoon lying atop pink sea salt contained within a seashell. We ordered approximately 60 oysters for our group- clearly the best Happy Hour deal they have to offer! The tuna crispy rice was good, the wings were well seasoned albeit veering towards the saltier side, and the ice cream trio (mint white chocolate, vanilla, and muscovado sugar) was very creamy and well done. I've had "okay" meals before, but none so expensive with such long wait times. After being seated on a Thursday night, it took a while to get someone to check in, thus beginning our two hour journey. We ordered all of our food at once. I don't know if he wrote it down or tried to memorize it or he just hoped for the best or he rubbed it into his hands and then blew it into the air like fairy dust, but it seemed like everyone was confused. At one point, we were brought a cheese plate we never ordered. A different guy came to confirm our order. Yet another different guy told us the sliders were coming up soon, even though we already had ours. And, later, our waiter wondered if he could get us anything else, and we're like, um, yeah, the rest of our food. As for the food, the fine fried chicken slider came out first, which is an odd appetizer. I even saw the table next to me ask "One?", like you're supposed to cut it into four pieces. Anyway, if they're open to constructive criticism, they should offer 2 for $14 rather than 1 for $9. The $14 arincini balls were sad. The balls themselves had a nice crispy edge which really holds in the lack of flavor. They are completely dependent on the smoked tomato sauce, for which they give you enough for one, maybe two if you plan ahead, possibly three if you ration. If I want to nitpick, they are supposed to come with crispy spinach- we only got a pinch of watercress. Then came the $19 margherita pizza (stanislaus tomato, fresh mozzarella & provolone, basil leaves), which we assume is pre-made because when we ordered it, the guy said, "Yeah, we may have one left." My wife disliked it, saying the crust was soft cardboard with sweet sauce that reminded her of elementary school. I didn't think it was bad. Of all the items, I'd dare say it was the best value around. Get it, a-round? ($19) After getting a box for the pizza (I decided it would be better after some time in the air fryer), we got our $11 house-cut fries (with fresh herbs, truffle parmesan, and aioli dip). Actually, the couple next to us, who got there after we ordered, got our fries. We probably got someone else's. We agreed that was the best item. To make up for the wait time and mistakes, the waiter offered us one of two desserts (normally four, but they were "out") To quote my wife, who found the whole dinner irritating, the (normally) $13 chocolate pot de crème (butterscotch mousse, graham cracker crumble, torched marshmallow) was for bozos, and didn't eat her half. The meal was okay (three stars), but the long wait times and inconsistent service made this a rare two-star experience. Our first time here with reservations for 8 people and 2 infants (no chairs needed) celebrating 2 birthdays. As soon as we walked in a staff member presumably a manager came over to speak to us. When she found out, we had 2 infants she scolded me and told me I should've made a reservations for 10 people. I apologized and told her we would appreciate whatever she could do to accommodate us. Then she proceeded to drag chairs around, very loudly and everyone in my party could tell she was annoyed. It was not a very welcoming feeling at all, and it started to put a damper on our birthday vibes. My friend and I had Sharks tickets at SAP Center and wanted to do dinner first. This was a new place to me so we thought we would try it. My friend got there first and it took quite a few minutes for someone to come over to the host stand to greet her. It seems they were very short staffed that night, at least earlier in the evening. My friend finally got seated at one of the high top tables which was fine. I arrived shortly after. Then it took quite awhile again for the waitress to come over to take our orders. The food came quickly though and it was tasty. I had the ROASTED BUTTERNUT SQUASH PIZZA: goat cheese crema, malted onion, sage, hot bourbon honey. This was very flavorful but the hot honey did not taste hot to me and I have a low spice tolerance. Overall a really good pizza. Loved all the items on it. My friend had the BUTTERMILK FRIED CHICKEN SLIDERS: pickled fresno chili slaw, spiced honey remoulade. She thought they were tasty. Overall good food but the service was lacking. More staff did end up showing up later in the evening so service got better. On Sharks game nights, they really need to staff up a bit earlier in the evening as people will be there. read more

I would like to start by mentioning that the only good things about this place were the French fries, our espresso martinis, and the amazing, moody interior design. The restaurant has a dark, intimate, and alluring contemporary atmosphere. Unfortunately, the service left much to be desired. The bartender primarily focused on serving drinks with minimal nonverbal interaction. You have to make eye contact and raise your hand to get her attention, and only then can you place your food order. She never returned to check if we wanted more drinks or food. It's no surprise that there were no patrons during peak hours on a Saturday night in a popular downtown location in San Jose. I even asked if they could bring a dessert with a candle after dinner, and I was willing to pay for it; it didn't have to be free. However, nobody followed up on my request. The person at the entrance only said, "Happy birthday!" and I assumed we were on the same page, but they never brought what I asked for. When it was time to pay, I was not shown an itemized receipt; I was only given the total amount. After that, the bartender left the terminal, and I couldn't ask for the receipt. When I pressed the print button, nothing happened--it didn't print. While the bartender wasn't very friendly, she did have some pretty cool tattoos! I won't be coming back, but I hope they can improve their service. They have a nice restaurant, good food, tasty drinks, and a great location in downtown San Jose. read more

We made reservations and the tiny girl who greeted us asked if we'd be okay with a high table and I said I'd prefer a regular table. She then became very curt and said the low tables were for reservations, which I pointed out I made one. She then said I should've requested a regular table, which the reservation process did not offer the option. We sat at the high table and I didn't give it more thought, but she apparently was stuck on it as I noticed people who came after us were having their orders taken ahead of us, their drinks we're coming out before ours and so on. Luckily the polite young man was their and began assisting us. Sadly professionalism was lost on her. Wandering San Pedro Square prior to a Sharks game without a plan is usually not a good idea, luckily for us District was available to save the night. While sitting at a table usually requires a reservation, the bar does not require any and you can have food there so it's a great arrangement. It's much bigger on the inside than the outside lets on with really high ceilings and wide dining area that surrounds a large bar. We came in during happy hour which offered $9 drinks, $8 wings, ceviche, and deviled eggs, and $7 basket of fries. In addition to this we ordered a mushroom pizza and some Guinness Business. The food was very good and the drinks were well made, the Guinness Business made great use of a Guinness reduction and had great balance. The happy hour was very worth it and I would make this a prime location for when I'm in San Pedro before a Sharks game. read more

And they made sure everything was meeting our needs. The bourbon selections were great (though disappointing they were out of Weller 12 year, one of my favorites) but gave me another Weller at the same price. When the one I selected wasn't what I wanted, they changed it out with no issues. The food was good. We had the Winter Roasted Pear Salad, fried Brussel Sprouts , arancini and whipped buratta. Hellooo District. Who loves a good Happy Hour deal? How about happy hour deals on a SUNDAY?! From 4pm to 6pm, you'll get $7 drafts and bites, $8 well drinks, wines and yummy appetizers like fontina and spinach arancini or deviled eggs. $9 buys you an Old Fashioned cocktail, a Moscow Mule or their crispy chicken wings. Call me boring, but whenever I think of heading to downtown SJ and don't feel like the offerings at San Pedro Square Market, District is easily our first choice. There's plenty of patio seating when the weather is gorgeous. There are high tops near the big TV or if you prefer to engage with the bartender, grab a seat at one of the comfy chairs at the center bar. Since we usually go here with my parents and kid on a Sunday ;-) we usually book a table. We will come here early enough to take advantage of that amazing happy hour deal and then order a pizza and other entrees. Service is always pleasant and with a smile and by the time our bellies are full, my kid is also starting to have her witching hour, it's time to wrap up and go. I wish we could stay late enough to catch some live music (they had them off and on during the summer!) and explore some more of their wines/whiskey selection. We arrived at District San Jose at 6:45pm for a 7:00pm reservation. There was no host, and although the restaurant was half empty, no one acknowledged us. The couple in front of us eventually asked a waiter (Tyler), who rolled his eyes and said "we'll be with you shortly." They ended up leaving. When Tyler finally seated us, we asked for an outdoor fire pit table. He put us at a small table by the door and, when we pointed out that other fire pit tables were occupied by two-person groups, he said "well they shouldn't be there, if you don't like it you can leave." He then refused to call a manager and walked away. The couple behind us, who witnessed this, also left. Another waiter later apologized and told us to sit at the fire pit, but after 10 more minutes without service, we left too. We were excited to try District for the first time, but the rude and dismissive service--especially from Tyler--completely ruined the experience. Sadly, we won't be coming back. read more

Solid and a return affair for sure. I've been here a few times now that ranged in awesomeness to real good. Resy reservations is a good idea but not always needed, since walk-in usually has space. Center bar or seating around the wall or high tops. The Gambas Al Ajillo is one of my favorites as you can see with photos from 3 different orders . I've tried the Ahi Tuna on a toast crisp was a bit disappointing. It was crisp verging on hot and hard and wanting more tuna to give a bigger bite. The Scallops were one other favorite. Wide whiskey and drink menu. They did not disappoint. Bartenders can range but some are so knowledgeable that the experience is elevated. Enjoy! read more

The Scallops & Pork Belly were Delicious and of course the Oysters. Everything was Great. Although it was a bit rough service wise, Carlos and Andrew, Where awesome. They were very polite and cordial and made it a priority to make things right, and they did, This definitely won me over. Turns out they were extremely short staffed, and the place was very busy. The way things where handled, on top of the fact the Food & Beverages where Phenomenal, I will most definitely be back, (Hopefully fully staffed, lol) I Highly Recommend District. Until next time. You can always depend on District to have a great happy hour deal. Came here for a last minute date night and I was so happy to see they still had their oyster deal for happy hour! There's not that many places that offer a good hh deal anymore but this place always does. Love it here read more

Stumbled upon this while looking for a dinner spot for 6 people on a Saturday, and it did not disappoint in terms of food and drink options! I like how the windows are like huge garage doors and they open it so when our group struggled with deciding "inside or outside", we opted for the table closest to the giant window so we got both ambiances. -- Food - fries: eh... they were a bit overcooked, dry, and the aoli was just aoli... skip - ceviche: very citrusy, light, refreshing. I liked the plantain crisps it came with! - baby gem salad: I love this salad and how they made it! Watermelon radishes, avocado, lettuce that's crispy and dressing that complements every ingredient perfectly; they made this so well and it's a good, fresh flavor that helped us cut the grease from our entrees - Margherita pizza: as expected. Dough is slightly thicker at crust, crispy on outside, fluffy on inside - sopressata salami pizza: this is a flavor bomb! This was probably my favorite pizza between the two. It was quite heavy and salty though (good thing we had the salad and ceviche to help cut the heavy greasiness :P ) - chicken sliders: it's much better than it looks! Crispy batter on the outside, juicy chicken on the inside. Comes with two sliders. Friend originally really wanted the burger slider but ended up with the chicken and preferred the chicken instead - slider burger: they ask you how you want your burger cooked! I loved the burger slider more than the chicken. It had some jam and melted cheese, and it was just perfection. I could eat a hundred of them! -- Drink Ordered a whiskey sour and I enjoyed it! -- Service was alright. Almost felt like we were bothering our waiter, even though he was nice.
