Zoku has been one of my favorite Restaurants to go to when I visit my best friend in Tracy. Unfortunately, my last to go ordered was a different experience. I ordered my usual, the dragon roll and the edaname. The edaname was grilled but bunt. The dragon roll tasted like the seafood was bad. I'm not sure if they have someone new in the kitchen but I ended up having to throw away the dragon roll. read more

Went yesterday to celebrate my mom's birthday. Sushi and sashimi are pretty good quality. Chicken teriyaki was good, my parents liked that it wasn't as sweet as other chicken teriyakis. Waiters are very sweet, but food comes out very slow. Oysters were very small though, in my dad's words, they were too small to even taste haha. Also make sure to keep in mind that they do charge a 18% service charge for parties of 6 or more. We accidentally double tipped an extra 20%, since we didn't read the bottom of the receipt, so just want to make sure no one else makes that mistake. read more

We came in in a Sunday night a little after five so right after they opened for dinner service. We were greeted upon entering and immediately seated with our choice of the sushi bar. It was our first time there so we asked our server for a few recommendations which he swiftly offered. We ordered a few lychee martinis which were very good! I was craving oysters so we ordered half a dozen and few nigiri. Both were absolutely delicious but I did get some shell pieces in my oysters but there were very flavorful so it didn't take away from the overall experience. After our appetizers we ordered three rolls (one of which was our servers recommendation). All three were great. The service was great and everyone there was very friendly. The food is amazing!!! Many Japanese restaurants use kale leaves for the decoration, because it is cheaper, but here they use Shiso leaves which is very authentic. And I love Shiso! The quality of seaweed is also very good. I can taste it. They don't shortcut or do the cost cut with the little but important things. That is the good sign! And all the staffs are very friendly! Value is definitely there. The interior of the place was spacious and very inviting. Server was very accommodating. Food is really good. We got the Pork Katsudon, Beef Teriyaki, Agedashi Tofu and the Soft Shell Crab. If I had to nitpick; it would just have to be the rice itself. It's too separated, firm, and does not really complement some of the meals. Maybe use jasmine rice or a variety of sticky rice for a more cohesive dish. Cocktails was also a delight. To start I have been here multiple times, the food is good which draws us, but we are always met with disappointment in the experience. In the summers the AC is constantly broken, which to me raises alarms in a raw fish establishments. But today I had my last meal at Zoku. Upon arrival, the restaurant had an unpleasant, musty odor, reminiscent of mold or dampness--a serious concern for any establishment serving food. It smells like the floor is not being seriously cleaned after services...or maybe even ever. Despite it being a Saturday, the restaurant was noticeably understaffed. We were informed that several menu items were unavailable--the chef wouldn't make a chefs special roll... The plates our appetizers were served on were chipped all over so unprofessional and embarrassing. In summary, this restaurant suffers from serious operational and service-related shortcomings. I would strongly advise management to address these foundational issues before expecting patrons to return--or recommend the establishment to others. I was craving sushi but in all the years I've lived in Tracy, sushi out here never hit the spot. I've seen this place on yelp and never had a chance to try, so thought I'd give it a shot tonight. Arrived around 6:50pm, party of 1. I was sat immediately at the sushi bar. The place was pretty busy, and it seems like they have a decent amount of staff on site, however It took about 10-15 minutes before the host came to ask me if I had been helped yet, and that he would go get someone. About another 5 minutes, someone came to take my order. I ordered the Zoku Punch from the bar, Chef's Nigiri, and a Three of a Kind roll. Drink was about 10 minutes to come, food another 15 after the drink. 1. The Zoku Punch was pretty good. Not overly sweet, and you cant taste the alcohol. I would order again. 6.5/10 2. The Chef's Nigiri - i saw one chef plating on a wooden long plate, it caught my eye, but when I was served mine by another chef, it was served on a regular blue sushi plate. Was a little disappointed the presentation was not the same. Also, a little disappointed the nigiri's were not introduced to me. Most sushi restaurants you go to, if you order a chef's special (omakase -nigiri, sashimi), the waiter will always tell you what is on the plate since it's not on the menu that way you know what the chef has made and what you're eating. Flavor wise everything was good, fresh and the flavors were well balanced. One had wasabi under the fish which i wish i was warned ahead of time. Would probably order again 7/10 3. Three of a Kind: Comes with salmon, tuna and hamachi with some veggies. It was not rolled properly so the roll kept breaking. One side was thinner than the other for rice. Overall fish was fresh though. 6/10 Overall my experience here was good, but could have been a lot better. Restaurant set up was nice, vibe was cute. I do think the staff seemed a bit overwhelmed and the service chaotic. If they are able to work out some kinks in the service, this restaurant will be around for a long time. My waitress was extremely friendly though! Not the best sushi spot I've been to, and a little overpriced ($55 for everything i ordered). It was way too hot in that restaurant to be serving sushi. They also have a poor ventilation system which made dining there even worse. The air had that greasy aroma. It was fully packed so service was extremely slow however the girl who was serving us was very friendly. I had hoped that the food would save the day but maybe we just came on a bad day because the fish seemed not very fresh. Everything tasted... off. Came back here. The sushi was still pretty good but they didnt give us any wasabi or ginger. Thats the number 1 thing you put with your sushi no matter what spot. Everything was pretty good however the calamari was a bit soggy and tasted like it was fried in used oil instead of fresh oil. Their menus change so beware when ordering similar items. We wanted the Hawaiian poke which comes with wonton chips. When we looked at the menu, there was only spicy tuna poke. We ordered that thinking it was the same poke as the Hawaiian poke. When it didnt come with the chips, i asked about it and they said we didnt order the right poke. Anywho...no big deal, just kind of confusing. Sushi was still pretty good. read more

Terrible experience. I can't even comment on the food since I never got mine. We had reservations when they opened at 5. Waited an hour for part of our food to come out. Hour and a half in, two of us still did not have our food. Then only 1 roll come out after the wait. Apparently they were understaffed. However the server was nonchalant about it the whole time. If they were that understaffed they should not have continued to seat people to ensure they could accommodate their guests. At the end they only offered to take off the roll we never got. We went for mothers day dinner after we decided to give it another shot after a horrible experience after first month after it opened. Last night, got seated fairly quickly. Noticed that our waiter took longer than usual. Also he was very chatty to the next table and we were just waiting for him to take our order. 10 minutes passed and finally came to our table. Took our order and everything. Food came out pretty quick and was very good! Unfortunately we ordered edamame and was sold out. Waiter was still very chatty with table next to us. I was surprised to find a quality sushi spot up in Tracy! Me and my friends have ordered here multiple times and enjoy the quality of the dishes. The slices of sashimi are thick! We enjoy the rolls as well. The chef's special roll is definitely a fun one to get. We loved most of the creations the chef has made for us and we'd get it more often if it weren't double the price of the other rolls. The other simple rolls are what you'd expect. Food was amazing! We started off with the calamari and the pieces were thick! It came with a good sauce as well. We also got the chirashi, sashimi mix, and Ikura. The fish was fresh, and the pieces were pretty good. My only thing was the service. I know it's not the servers fault but the restaurant was for sure understaffed. Only two waitresses. It took 15 minutes just for someone to give us water, and it took almost 30 minutes just for someone to check on us and give us the check. I had to wave someone down. The people next to us waited a long time for one roll to come out. There was a big group of people at the front door not even being acknowledged or helped. Food is great though just hire more people. Also it seemed like one of the sushi makers family was there so they for sure got all their food fast and quick lol. read more

Y'all need to try place out! Lived in tracy a year but haven't found any favorite spots since the bay has soooo many good places. Zoku is my newest obsession in tracy. I went with my parents of friday night and the tables were filled. Seems like a great place for dates, hangouts, and for family. The staff was super friendly and checked up on us frequently. We ordered a whole bunch of things but I recommend getting the sashimi. We got the 18 piece which came in a really cute sushi boat. The fried oysters were good too. The batter was light and crispy. Parents tried the zoku punch and hot sake. They said it was good! Will be coming back soon :) read more

A bit of a contradiction. Rolls were good. Server didn't know what Junmai was but directed me to a good Junmai Ginjo. I've been looking for a good sushi spot comparable to the Bay area. Found this spot from a reference ( our tattoo artist), and it did not disappoint. The sushi was fresh and on point. Service was excellent ( we sat at the bar). The drinks were amazing and of mixology standard. Dolly ( our bartender and took our order) made us feel very comfortable and attended to. I love the vibe. This was a very pleasant surprise to find in the Tracy area. For decades the Sushi/Sashimi game in the area has been very lacking. Most of the options in the area are comparable to that of a grocery store. But Zoku is the one exception. It is actually the sister store of a very successful restaurant in Dublin: Amakara. If you're already familiar with that restaurant then you'll know what to expect here. Exceptional quality fish, exceptional service, and a fine selection of unique options on their menu. I highly recommend trying some of their contemporary concoctions, like the ceviche. But you can never go wrong with their Sashimi! First timer and I wasn't super impressed. It's nice inside (especially for Tracy), but the service and food was lacking. Started with tempura and it was hot a delicious. A little greasy, but still very good. Thats kind of where the problems started. I ordered the teriyaki chicken which comes with salad and rice. The salad was brought out first, which was a little strange, but I went with it because I was starving. Then my chicken came out and it smelled strange, was slightly burnt and overcooked, and the sauce was too thin. And then we waited. Must've been 20 mins of me sitting across from my wife with my food while she still waited for her sushi. I'll never understand a restaurant that serves one person at the table and lets the other just sit. In the meantime I asked for some more water and some hot sauce...and it never came. Finally, my wife's sushi arrived and by that time she had told me to go ahead and eat since my food was cold. She did love her sushi, but I think the experience overall left a lot to be desired. First yelp review EVER! Not a Yelp Elite or anything like that BUT, I felt like I NEEDED to drop my 2 cents because I don't understand how reviews here are 5 stars. Not sure if it was a one off day but I'd like to give my review and hope that improvements could be made. WARNING: I'm sorry in advance. I have a lot to say as this was a very bad dining experience. So, I'm very selective when it comes to sushi. I like to visit restaurants that are close to open waters (Bay Area) or ones that rave about fresh fish. My little sister wanted to visit for a last minute Friday night dinner date to check out the new Tracy sushi restaurant that Elite Yelp reviewers are raving about. I was skeptical but I wanted to try it out and support local businesses. Apparently, the owners have another restaurant in Dublin that is also quite popular. I had no expectations going in so I was looking forward to the meal. When we arrived, it was already slightly busy and no host to be seen. All the waiters looked busy so no one said "Hi" or informed us of what to do. I noticed a wait list on the front counter so I put my name down and other guest started to roll in. People were just crowding the front so my sister and I stood to the side to make room for more guest. Eventually, a waiter comes to say "Hi" but we were standing to the side. Thinking that the waiter would use the waitlist, instead they seated people who came in after us first! I was confused so I asked why, I find out that the Host scheduled called out and no other waiter knew how to host. I feel this is bad management for not having an experienced sub for the host. We were seated and given menus immediately after I asked about the confusion. Our table was wet and dirty (not wiped down) so we had to keep our menus off the table and it took between 10-15min before we were greeted. The intervals of greetings were very spread out to the point where my sister started timing them to make sense of it. The table next to us had the same things to complain about as well. We ordered + my review: 1. Grilled Shishito You can't go wrong with Grilled Shishito peppers. They're delicious on their own. The order came on it's own but I'm used to it coming with a dip and lemon wedges (usually some kind of citrus mayo side). My sister told me it's not unusual for it to not come with anything else so I caved and asked for a few lemon wedges - that DIDN'T COME even after asking a few times as reminders T.T 2. Agedashi Tofu This was the worst I've ever had. I'm sorry to say but it was awful and I love this simple dish. The coating of the tofu was extremely hard. The coating with the white bits were extremely difficult to bite so we only ate the tofu and tried not to eat the coating. I believe they might've used cornstarch coating instead of potato starch due to the whitish crumbs I see on it. As for the tofu, after biting into it, the interior started to crumble which led me to think they used medium firm tofu instead of silken or soft tofu. I could totally tell because when you bite into it, it wasn't smooth but instead crumbled. To top it off, it was missing the umami sauce. No seasoning either so it tasted like plain tofu. 3. Sushi & Sashimi Combination I liked the presentation of the sushi, typical for these sets. When it was served, the fish wasn't introduced. If I didn't know my sushi I would've been confused. The halibut, uni, salmon, and yellowtail were ok. I say ok because I could tell that the texture of these pieces were starting to feel and smell not fresh. The rest weren't fresh, especially the tuna/white tuna nigiri. It had a fishy smell to it and it crumbled in my mouth with a thready like texture. All of the nigiri had really hard rice, I'm pretty sure it was uncooked. I ended up eating the good pieces of fish without the rice. I couldn't finish this entree. I left the tuna and rice on my plate. 4. Scallop hand roll My sister ordered this so I didn't taste it. The one thing she did mention was that is was too spicy to the point where she couldn't taste the quality of the scallops. 5. Seaweed salad Normal 6. Hot Sake They had one size hot sake. It was taking a while to arrive so we asked for it as a reminder (they were really busy) but it didn't work. It never came. As we were getting close to finishing, the waiters realized it wasn't served and they asked us if we would still like it but our meal was almost finished and I was ready to get out of there so we declined it and asked to take it out of our bill. Overall, I think there could be some minor improvements. I'm hoping it was just a one off day but people looked pretty aggravated with the service. Quality of food and raw fish could be better so definitely don't think it's worth all the stars. Maybe their rolls are better? Not sure but, I usually measure the quality of a sushi restaurant based off of their sashimi and nigiris. read more

The Food: Extremely fresh and delicious. The raw fish basically melted in my mouth. I got the SPICY CRUNCHY RAINBOW and Chicken Kastu. The rice was very soft and fluffy, the chicken was perfectly fried, not too dry nor too chewy. Service: It was extremely fast, we got our food and drinks within 15 minutes of sitting down. Although getting our bail was a little harder since our waiter was also the bar tender. Otherwise, everyone was very friendly and welcoming. The restaurant: The day we went, our AC was down so it was a little hot. But we went during the night so the temperature was cooler. Hands down this place never fails us. After going out to try a new spot that failed us we had to come back here to our new spot. The vibes the food the drinks just everything is perfect.
