I've been eating here since they opened, many years ago, and the food is consistently yummy. Super fresh and flavorful always great service. The restaurant is also really pretty! I love how you have plenty of privacy in the booths. Another plus - always plenty of parking.

Reading the reviews had me question if I wanted to visit this location. Thank goodness I didn't let what other people were saying dictate my decision to stop by! The food is great! It is cooked fresh and the menu is creative. The customer service was warm and the bar drinks were stiff. The prices were fair. And lots of customers came in for carry out. I don't know why it had bad reviews here. I will say the portion for the price was not worth it for me. But the quality of the food made sense. Maybe you get less food cra use it's better quality? Stop by and give this location a try.

This presentation is beautiful, especially for a lunch special. But, some of the fish is near frozen. Plus, ranch dressing!?

When I first moved to this area, Zen was a hidden gem that I often frequented. Something has changed. After some pandemic related quality issues, I stopped going regularly, and today went for lunch, for the first time in two years or so. It was awful. To start with, I had a boba tea. The tea itself was good. But, the boba? I thought they put blueberries on my tea. They're dark, rock hard, and chewy. This means they're either overcooked, or more likely, old. Also, the price on this tiny cup is outrageous. Particularly when you consider it had all of seven pearls in it. Okay, okay... onto the miso. It's very clear, very bland, and has a kind of fishy taste to it. I couldn't finish it, and I could handle a 55gallon drum of miso soup. Yurk. I ordered the sashimi lunch special. My white tuna was ice cold and slightly frozen. The regular tuna and salmon were okay -- the red tuna was actually quite good. The California roll, well, it's a California roll. It was fine. Oddly, the side salad was covered in ranch dressing, which is not a good companion for sushi. The service was fast and friendly. The food presentation was downright gorgeous. And, the place was sparkling clean. Guys, get the food quality back up and I'll come back. I used to order twice a week. But, right now? There's a taco bell and a jersey mike looking pretty good.

Crab fried rice with no lump crab
paul s.

Not sure what's going on with this place. It's been in this location a long time and it used to be pretty good, but the reviews within the last year or so seem to indicate a downward spiral. Now it's more hit and miss. The empress fish entree was good, but the crab fried rice was a disappointment -- It tasted good, but the lump crab the menu promised was nowhere to be seen. Basically 19 bucks for a plate of rice with one baby softshell. The service was fine, but I could see how the slightest surge might throw that all out of whack. Like so many older family run joints, they've adjusted to the new DoorDash economy by trimming staff to the bare bones, while bags of to-go orders get cold by the door. One day when I visited, a catering order for 300 people (I asked) was getting packaged up. Zen's cash register might still be doing well, but it's easy to see how quality and service for dining in could get lost in the shuffle.

Rice and a second to-go box minus rat droppings.
Deb ..

I had a good experience and the food seemed pretty tasty--until I asked for a to-go box and found rat droppings inside! Gross! This completely changed my impression of the place. Hence the two stars. Now I understand why we were the only customers in the restaurant from the time we ordered, ate, and discovered the droppings. They need to get an exterminator in there as soon as possible and have regular visits to prevent this from happening again. Additionally, I suggest making the place more inviting by removing unused furniture and opening the sushi bar. Please do something about this!

There is a lot to choose from the menu. You have the classic Asian dishes and sushi. Even though it was a Sunday, they let us order the Beef with Broccoli from the lunch combo menu which included a soup and spring roll. We also ordered the Happy Family which has shrimp, scallops, chicken, and beef with mixed vegetables in brown sauce. Food and service were very good. Plenty of free parking.

Scorpion Roll, Salmon Sushi, and Lychee Martini

I stopped in today for an early evening solo date. The food was great quality. Atmosphere was calm yet active. Customers were in and out picking up food as well as being seated. Servers were very kind! Efficient, clean, and soft volume of top 40's music playing in background! I would return & highly recommend.

Food came out cold! Service was poor by server section 3. The sad thing is I used to love this spot! I came almost every day for lunch when I worked in the area. The quality has simply gone down. Would no longer recommend, unfortunately

Drunken noodles with chicken. Didn't like : (
Donyiel C.

Maybe I should have read the reviews before coming here! I was in the mood for drunken noodles, was nearby and decided to check it out. I've had lots of drunken noodles and I can honestly say this was one of the worst I've ever had in my entire life. Not exaggerating! It was bland and flavorless. I couldn't finish it. The customer service was good, but I won't be back here. There were quite a few others in here - not sure they were getting, but I can't recommend this place! Sorry it's a no for me!!

Ordered shrimp fried rice several times off menu inside but when ordered to go; it's greasy and looks funny for 2nd time and unable to eat 1st and 2nd day. FYI

My go-to sushi place in columbia!…read more Food: 5/5 I cannot rave more about the freshness of the sushi here. I am a lover of tuna and regardless of the roll I order, specialty or regular tuna, they are all delicious. Upon arrival, I was shocked to see how packed it was, but that was telling of how good their food is. There were a lot of birthdays being celebrated that evening, and it was a Wednesday. They had a private room available, but there is a food minimum and you have to take your shoes off (floor table set up). Though we were offered the option, we decided to just sit in the main area since we were coming with a few older family members and didn't want them to struggle to put shoes back on later and they prefer sitting in chairs. They have sushi, teriyaki, platters and combination dishes. We all had something different, ordering from the combination options, teriyaki and some sushi on the side. Since we all ordered a special, it came with miso soup and salad. The food was brought out in a staggered manner - three out of the five of us got our food before the others, and they almost finished half of their dish before ours even came out. I had the beef teriyaki and I was shocked to see that it was a large piece of beef, and we were given knives to cut it up. I am used to the meats being already cut up, so this was different. The food was still good though! I will say that I wish there were more broccoli, than bean sprouts accompanying the meat - the dish was still delicious though! The chunk of meat was so large that I actually had leftovers to bring home as a second meal. The sushi was impressive. Not only was the selection so large and I wanted to order every single one of the special rolls (but I didn't because my eyes tend to be bigger than my stomach), they use all fresh ingredients. The shumai was unimpressive, but because everything else was good, I didn't really mind it. I feel like my rice bowl was not full, as most restaurants pack the rice into the bowl; whereas I felt like there were air pockets in mine so there was a little less. To my surprise, they had a decent dessert menu: several ice cream options, variety of mochi and a few cake selections. Because they knew we were celebrating a birthday, they surprised us with a large scoop of vanilla ice cream, topped with different cookies to share! It came out with a sparkler, and the employees singing along to a soundtrack played on the speakers. This really made my sister feel so special, and as I said before, it seemed like most of the larger parties there were also celebrating a birthday that evening. Delicious food, friendly service, easy parking and fun atmosphere!

The restaurant blends modern and traditional Japanese design and occupies the former space where a coffee shop once stood. There is ample free parking outside, though Friday evenings in this part of Columbia are notoriously busy. Food -- Thoughtfully presented, visually appealing, and made with fresh ingredients. Seafood Miso Soup -- A large bowl filled with whole fresh clams, scallops, shrimp, and green onion. A very generous portion--so much so that she brought some home to enjoy later. Salmon Skin Salad -- Pieces of salmon skin ranging from crispy to slightly chewy, mixed with cucumber, fish roe, spicy mayo, and eel sauce. A delicious combination. Signature Maki - "Maryland" Roll -- Beautifully presented with blue crab, shishito peppers (mild and slightly sweet), Old Bay-torched salmon, spicy mayo, and rice pearls. Both friends quickly devoured theirs. Prices felt somewhat higher than typical mall fare, but the freshness of the ingredients and attention to detail made it worthwhile. The entire staff we encountered were engaging and genuinely seemed happy to be there for their guests. A big nod to management for making hospitality an important part of the dining experience. One minor suggestion: the attractive menus could use periodic checks, as a few pages appeared a bit worn. I would happily recommend a visit--perhaps on a less hectic day so you can enjoy the décor and food at a more relaxed pace. There is also an outdoor patio that will be especially appealing once the warmer weather returns.

She acknowledged me with an annoyed look then started mumbling something under her breath that I could not understand. I chose to ignore it. I asked for one more sushi roll and a cup of water.
