I've been going to Zen's for the last few years. I keep coming back because the customer service is good and there is definitely a family atmosphere. When it comes to food there are good and not so good days. I always pay attention to who is at the sushi bar, I don't like how some people make my sushi so I will not order it if they are working. So on that note I do wish that there is more consistency. Im big on cleanliness and I haven't really had a huge problem with it but I do wish gloves were used by those who make sushi. I have been a regular customer here with my mom and dad. We are obsessed with the hot hot rolls. Sometimes they are under staffed and we have to wait a little longer, but it's not the staffs fault. The only reason I'm taking a star away is because on multiple occasions my mom has ordered hot and sour soup and we've had to send it back every time because it wasn't steaming hot or even relatively warm. This establishment has gone way, way downhill. After making my husband wait a half hour to collect a carry-out order long before called in, they forget to include part of our order and - wait for it - when my husband called to speak to them about it - hung the phone up so as not to answer the phone. Additionally, I have gone in recently for lunch only to be poorly treated by the hostess - an older woman who is incredibly rude. The manager - who I've met and is very nice - is never there anymore - which is largely the problem. He needs to be doing more of just that - managing. I was craving Szechuan so I went to Zen and ordered Szechuan chicken. I haven't had Szechuan in a while, but I know what I received is not it. Szechuan I've had in the past is a brown spicy sauce that has a slight sweetness. The Szechuan I received today was not spicy at all and it didn't have a sweetness to it. To be honest, the sauce was very bland. I went to Zen about three weeks ago and ordered shrimp with broccoli and triple delight. The triple delight is suppose to have a sweet ginger sauce. I visited Zen for lunch and I don't think I'll be returning for pepper steak. I should have tried the sushi since that is in the restaurant's name but the way my keto lifestyle is setup- I opted for the pepper steak. When it arrived at the table, it looked delicious but smelled awful. It didn't taste much better either. I ordered the Aji tuna tacos, which are usually great, but they came and the tuna was filled with sinew. . It was pretty much inedible she brought tuna Sushi instead of the ordered salmon and offered to switch it out, but we chose to keep it because she had said the tuna was very good today. I had a craving for hot and sour soup after feeling some mild side effects from my flu shot. I've been here before for carryout as it is close to my home. Being that I am a Chinese American, I consider this "bad" Chinese food. Not that it is bad by any measure. It satisfies a craving but it is Americanized Chinese Food, far from being authentic. There are times that is exactly what I want. One of my other local go to places is out of business so that makes Zen the closest and most convenient. I do love that they offer sushi. This particular visit, I wanted the hot and sour soup and my daughter told me about the value of the combo meal. So we each picked our items- she got the orange chicken with chicken corn soup and I got the shrimp lo mein with the hot and sour soup. Both came with a small appetizer of gyoza and crispy prawns. Was it the most delicious food I've ever had? No, of course not. Did it satisfy the craving? Yes! Very easy to call ahead and order and the food was still hot when my daughter brought it home. I've only been inside myself one other time for a pick up. I'm just glad to see local businesses making things work in these current times. read more

Our first time here, we walked in unannounced with a party of six at 8:00 pm. We found the place very astetically appealing and very clean. Our server "Matt" was very nice and attentive. We were asked about drinks and appetizers right away and both came very quickly. Our main courses on the other hand we're very slow to come out considering they were not very busy. The food was very good, too many dishes to mention all but I had Sushi, a vegetable roll and the fire roll which both were fresh and very good. I definitely recommend Zen. read more

I was stunned to see that I hadn't done a review of this place since I eat here ALL THE TIME. It's a fusion place and I very rarely eat anything but sushi (their pan fried dumplings are most def worth a sample, though). The sushi here is consistently fresh (with the exception of an occasional chewy flounder or red snapper) and they're well prepared. The portion sizes have shrunk over the years but I know that the cost of severely perishable food is always on the rise so I can't gripe too much about that. I have to say, I am addicted to their Zen Roll. It is just an amazing collection of flavors that come together perfectly in your mouth. I'm salivating now just thinking about it. Thank goodness no drowning in soy sauce salt lick, PTL. We ordered shrimp rolls, and they were delicately crispy and hot! My sesame chicken had real chicken and sesame seeds sprinkled on top. I came her about two years ago for the first time and had their vegan general tso and I remember it being so good. I went again today size I was craving it and it wasnt the same at all. The general tso was overwhelming sweet and vegan protein had a weird after taste. I did however order the ahi tuna taco and shrimp fried rice and they were both DELICIOUS! the ahi tuna was beautifully sliced and glazed with this tasty vinaigrette. The shrimp fried rice was full flavor and it was moist and not dry like mist fried rice that I've had. The service was quick and done politely. I was really looking forward to trying this place- why? It's new for one, and it's got a replica terra cotta warrior in the window. How cool is that? Walk in the door, and you can see that someone clearly went to design school- the place looks upscale, trendy, open, friendly, and inviting. My favorite touch, because I'm a pushover, is the waterfall thingy that greets you as you come in the door. For food? I went tradish. Teriyaki chicken- ok, slightly bland. Not overly sweet like other places. The Miso soup was unfortunately bland, but at least it wasn't overly salty. My companion liked the food, but also felt that it was slightly bland. So, it may not be the most traditional, but it's a great place to take a date for the decor alone. Oh- Almost forgot. You're going to meet the friendliest wait staff you've ever seen here. When my bf decided we were getting sushi at his favorite sushi place, I was shocked that it was in Burtonsville. What could possibly be out there? Apparently really good sushi! We ordered a chirashi, sashimi platter, and white tuna roll. The chirashi was solid! It came beautifully presented in an ornamental, round platter. That sushi rice was seriously the best I've ever had! a perfect blend of flavors. The sashimi platter has very fresh, almost buttery slices of fish. I was seriously pleased with the red snapper and salmon. I felt presentation wise it could have been much better rather than sticking it on a white plate. White tuna was outta this world!! Zen's is my neighborhood restaurant for all things Asian. I ordered the tofu pad Thai to find that the tofu tasted as though it has been cut in strips ahead of time, fried and tossed with the rest of the ingredients at the last minute. When done this way, the tofu doesn't absorb the other ingredients that make this dish so amazing. Normally this dish is great, and I'll give it another time, incase this was a one-off experience. The Good: The restaurant itself was very nice. Very modern on the inside. It had a bar area, sushi area, and a good amount of seating. The staff was also friendly, and very attentive and helpful. The Bad: The food just didn't do it for me or my family. It's rare that nobody in my family of 5 likes anything when we eat out. We all got different entrees, and we like to share, but no one cared for any of the Main dishes. I got general tso chicken and it was just huge chunks of breast meat fried and covered with sauce. The meat was dry and hard to cut. My fiance got the kung pao chicken, my daughter got chicken and broccoli, and my son and youngest daughter shared chicken lo mein. None of these items are new to us, but nobody cared for any of our meals from here. We even tried to swap but it was just not going to be a good day for us here. Note: My family hates egg drop soup. Absolutely hate it. On their menu for soups they offered Hot & Sour, Chicken & Corn, and Wonton Soup. 2 of us ordered chicken & Corn which was egg drop soup with chicken and corn in it. No description on the menu. The Review: As for the asian grill aspect of this restaurant it was a complete miss for me and my family. First impressions are sometimes the only impression that you get to make some times, and this one was not a good one as far as the food goes. I will say that I did not get a chance to eat any of the sushi here, but the trays that were passing by going to other tables looked really good. Let me say- I used to love this place. I used to come all the time and always requested the server Kenny. He had the best customer service! It's unfair to change my review based on one experience but I was so dissatisfied and embarrassed because I highly recommended coming here with a friend for his first time. We were not given any silverware (or chopsticks), the waitress came by so solemnly that we had to get up for water after waiting an additional 5 minutes just to be polite, she didn't ask how the meal was, we watched her roll napkins with a coworker and chat for a very long time (which is completely fine with me as long as she would come make sure her customers were ok after 10 or 15 minutes!!!???), when I asked if I could make a substitution for my dietary restrictions she said she wasn't sure but said I probably couldn't because they are strict on the lunch special (rules are rules but if you're unsure please just go ask because it costed me an extra eight dollars since I had to order a non- lunch special), my plate stood empty for a good 10 minutes and no one walked by when we needed the check so we had to get up to ask for it (not a big deal but it was a combination of things). The food itself is consistently okay and some days its good. Sushi there is good moreso than the dishes but I don't care how good the food is if I come to an establishment that I recommended to become embarrassed by terrible customer service. I tip very nicely- I personally believe that even if your meal is six dollars you should still tip five because waitstaff have to feed their families too. Nicely sized dishes, fairly full of veggies; however, we both were quite underwhelmed with our entrees. In my opinion, they really lacked flavor, and needed additional seasoning. So much so that my grandmother declined to finish her food, because she just didn't care for it. The lo mein looked good, but was definitely lackluster. Every good thing I have had to say in my previous review still stands. This visit my group came to eat the evening meal and we decided to order primarily Chinese dishes: we were quite pleased. I started out with some smoked eel roll sushi; it was as good as I had remembered it to be. We polished off three small pots of Jasmine tea and a bowl of hot-and-sour soup each while waiting for dinner to be cooked. I asked for additional vinegar to add to the soup and the waiter obligingly obtained a small serving from the kitchen for our table. The Chinese entrees arrived and looked inviting. Mongolian beef with onions was nice and smoky; Chicken with Broccoli was tasty, the chicken was tender and the broccoli still slightly crispy. Best of all, the shrimp with green beans was excellent: The beans had a slight char, not overcooked, and the shrimp were flavorful (just right cooking on the shrimp, even the shell on the tails was edible and flavor-filled). Everyone in our group was planning on not overeating, and my initial impression, when looking at the substantial servings, was that there would be leftovers to go home... No such thing! Out group cleaned the plates, the only leftover was a little steamed white rice that remained uneaten. I didn't understand why some of the waiters were wearing football jersies in a place that was obviously trying to be kinda classy though. It isn't trying to be a sports bar so that didn't make any sense to me. If the restaurant had a simple staff uniform, it would have bumped the place up a notch on the "snazzy" scale. Despite this, it's a nice place and would probably be good for a quasi-nice date in the evening. Second things second: I like salmon skin rolls. I say this not in a random, "I like turtles" kind of way, but that you can't always find them where you want to find them and sometimes find them where they SHOULDN'T be. And by that I mean places that have no clue how to make them. You can find them here, and Zen knows how to make them. The salmon skin was nice and extra crispy like it should be, not soggy and limp like you find it made so frequently. I might even say that it was the best salmon skin roll I've ever had, and I've had lots. Either way, don't skip this one if you like them. A heads up that the Sake Don and Tekka Don are no longer listed on the menu. They still have the Salmon Delight, though, and it was an adequate substitute that was fresh and tasty. The service was okay, although I would have liked a little more attention paid to my drinks and my plates since there were only a few people dining in the restaurant at the time I was there. The biggest annoyance that I could comment on, though, was the need for me to get up and get my own soy sauce from way down the sushi bar. Okay, "way" is an exaggeration maybe, there were only 7 seats, but one bottle Zen? One??? Come on now. And the waiter should have been on point with that since I was the only one seated there. Anyway, my legs aren't broken but I say, kind madam that looks like an owner or manager at the front cash register, you guys need to invest in some nice soy sauce pots and put one about every other seat. This was my first time here. Our table ordered 4 drinks to start and it took close to 30 minutes for our drinks to get made at the bar. The lady at the bar didn't seem to know what to do.. She was reading instructions which took forever. When the drinks came, they tasted terrible and artificial. They use very cheap mixers. When my sushi came out it was warm which was very concerning to me. My sushi should not have been warm. Everyone working seemed to be all over the place and not know what to do. There was a line out the door with people waiting forever to either pick up or sit in. No one ever greater us when we arrived. There seemed to be only one server for the entire restaurant which was ridiculous. I will not be coming back here at all. Terrible experience. read more
