Decently good Asian food, good service. Their Boba Tea is a little sweet for me, but otherwise it's a solid spot.

Now, the way that it was served at the event I was attending may partially be to blame, but I have quite a few comments on this food. I was attending a cherry blossom themed event, and this was the food they featured. There was a spread of California rolls, sweet potato rolls, chicken dumplings, teriyaki chicken, and noodles. I skipped the Cali rolls because those are never my go-to, but I got a couple of the sweet potato rolls. They were pretty basic and loose, but were decent with soy sauce. The dumplings were quite cold. The teriyaki chicken tasted like rotisserie with a sweet sauce all over it. And the noodles were rather plain and just room temperature. I solved the temperature problem with the microwave, so that wasn't so big of a deal, but the taste of everything overall was really bland. This place has been going down hill for years. It just gets worse. I ordered pickup and arrived 5 minutes after my pickup time. They did not see the order in the system when I showed my confirmation. Then they said it "just came through" and promised to have my order out in 10 minutes. Then they told me they do not have Udon noodles that I ordered. This is the last straw for me. I've been eating here since they opened, many years ago, and the food is consistently yummy. Super fresh and flavorful always great service. The restaurant is also really pretty! I love how you have plenty of privacy in the booths. Another plus - always plenty of parking. read more

Reading the reviews had me question if I wanted to visit this location. Thank goodness I didn't let what other people were saying dictate my decision to stop by! The food is great! It is cooked fresh and the menu is creative. The customer service was warm and the bar drinks were stiff. The prices were fair. And lots of customers came in for carry out. I don't know why it had bad reviews here. I will say the portion for the price was not worth it for me. But the quality of the food made sense. Maybe you get less food cra use it's better quality? When I first moved to this area, Zen was a hidden gem that I often frequented. Something has changed. After some pandemic related quality issues, I stopped going regularly, and today went for lunch, for the first time in two years or so. It was awful. To start with, I had a boba tea. The tea itself was good. But, the boba? I thought they put blueberries on my tea. They're dark, rock hard, and chewy. This means they're either overcooked, or more likely, old. Also, the price on this tiny cup is outrageous. Particularly when you consider it had all of seven pearls in it. Okay, okay... onto the miso. It's very clear, very bland, and has a kind of fishy taste to it. I couldn't finish it, and I could handle a 55gallon drum of miso soup. Yurk. I ordered the sashimi lunch special. My white tuna was ice cold and slightly frozen. The regular tuna and salmon were okay -- the red tuna was actually quite good. The California roll, well, it's a California roll. It was fine. Oddly, the side salad was covered in ranch dressing, which is not a good companion for sushi. The service was fast and friendly. The food presentation was downright gorgeous. And, the place was sparkling clean. Guys, get the food quality back up and I'll come back. I used to order twice a week. But, right now? Not sure what's going on with this place. It's been in this location a long time and it used to be pretty good, but the reviews within the last year or so seem to indicate a downward spiral. Now it's more hit and miss. The empress fish entree was good, but the crab fried rice was a disappointment -- It tasted good, but the lump crab the menu promised was nowhere to be seen. Basically 19 bucks for a plate of rice with one baby softshell. The service was fine, but I could see how the slightest surge might throw that all out of whack. Like so many older family run joints, they've adjusted to the new DoorDash economy by trimming staff to the bare bones, while bags of to-go orders get cold by the door. One day when I visited, a catering order for 300 people (I asked) was getting packaged up. Zen's cash register might still be doing well, but it's easy to see how quality and service for dining in could get lost in the shuffle. read more

I had a good experience and the food seemed pretty tasty--until I asked for a to-go box and found rat droppings inside! Gross! This completely changed my impression of the place. Hence the two stars. Now I understand why we were the only customers in the restaurant from the time we ordered, ate, and discovered the droppings. They need to get an exterminator in there as soon as possible and have regular visits to prevent this from happening again. Additionally, I suggest making the place more inviting by removing unused furniture and opening the sushi bar. Please do something about this! read more

There is a lot to choose from the menu. You have the classic Asian dishes and sushi. Even though it was a Sunday, they let us order the Beef with Broccoli from the lunch combo menu which included a soup and spring roll. We also ordered the Happy Family which has shrimp, scallops, chicken, and beef with mixed vegetables in brown sauce. Food and service were very good. Plenty of free parking. read more

I used to live this restaurant! We went there for lunch today and it was HORRIBLE!! To start off with, there were three of us. We only received silverware for two no matter how many times we asked. The pork dumplings came out but we were never given plates. The dumplings didn't have any taste to them at all. The sushi didn't taste like it normally does. I tried to tell them and one of the servers got mad at me. He told me that the fish was from the same company that they have used for 12 years. I told him that another part was dry. He told me that I let it sit too long. He told me no matter what that he needed to charge me something for it. He ended up charging me for 50% of the cost. I asked for a refill in my drink. One of the staff had a balled up tissue from wiping his nose in his hand. That tissue touched the rim of my glass. He knew that it did and just walked away. read more

I work nearby, and this place has gotten better since I first started going. The food has always been decent and the lunch specials are good and they give a lot of food. The inside atmosphere is what has improved. The most recent visit I got a sushi lunch special that comes with a soup (appetizer), rice, shrimp w/ broccoli, sushi, AND a salad. The sushi is overpriced and really doesn't taste fresh either. - spicy tuna: pretty much just mush - shrimp tempura: the shrimp had a funky taste and just overall bland - hot hot roll: we used to love it but the combination of a funky smell and weird tasting shrimp and added way too much siracha. I like spicy but the amount of siracha plus jalapeño made it unbearable and lips burn. Just don't come here if you looking for good sushi, try anyone else tbh read more

It came with fried rice, spring roll and soup (I picked chicken wonton). Presentation of the food was nice ... a good portion. The soup was pretty good and a perfect amount for lunch. I usually order from here all the time and the sushi is amazing. today when i went i had ordered my regular order (that i've had hundreds of times) i usually get eel sauce on the side to dip my sushi in but the eel sauce i had recieved was not the usual eel sauce i get. it tasted sour and expired. when i went back to get a new one they told me that was all they had and didn't even offer me a new one. the consistency was like barbeque. unfortunately i will not be returning because i cannot eat that rotten eel sauce with my sushi. read more

We ordered chicken chow mein but they gave us this chicken in lots of onion. And no noodles in it. It cost us 60 dollars for three items. When I called them they kept saying this is called chowmein in some parts of the world and it's a noodle dish in some parts of the world. I don't know what he means. Im pretty taken back by the poor reviews here. I've been here at least 10 different times and am yet to have a poor experience. I go with coworkers routinely and no one ever complains. The meal deals have huge portions and are your typical Americanized Chinese food options. And the sushi is absolutely their highlight, for me especially. If you're expecting extravagance and over the top Chinese food in BURTONSVILLE you're out of your mind. It's better than an exclusively take out option and the staff is extremely friendly and accommodating. They've allowed my coworkers and myself to finish eating our meals up to 20 minutes after closing. It's unfortunate that people just passing through were so quick to bash a good local spot. Phenomenal sushi! Ordered a kani salad and whatever dressing they put on there was to die for! We ordered three rolls: spicy salmon, zen specialty, and salmon avocado. We've been going to Zen since it opened in Burtonsville years ago, and we lived nearby. Since moving to Downtown Silver Spring (10 miles away), we order takeout occasionally when planning on being in the area. This visit was so disappointing. I ordered the seafood fried rice, which is supposed to include shrimp and lump crab. There was no lump crab, not even real crab. They substituted fake crab (fish) sticks, which I would never order. My daughter ordered drunken noodles with chicken. The noodles were completely tasteless. I don't know what's changed with their chefs or management, but we won't be going back.
