Sizzling tofu plate
Liz C.

Located in the same plaza as Lion Supermarket, Yuan Bistro offers a variety of different Chinese dishes. The place is spacious with several tables and on a Saturday evening there were plenty of tables and no wait. We were seated immediately. Scan the QR code for the menu. We got the Japanese tofu sizzling plate, chongqing style spicy noodles, and achoy sautéed in garlic. The Japanese tofu was definitely our favorite of our meal. It came out sizzling on a plate and each piece of tofu was silky soft inside with a savory and umami sauce on the outside. Perfectly balanced and seasoned. The chongqiing noodles were okay - tasted fine but didn't blow us away. I thought it would be spicier and more numbing but it wasn't too spicy. The noodle texture was normal and the flavor felt like it could use something more. The achoy with garlic was good although I personally felt it could use a little more garlic. The staff do walk around and so you can flag someone down if you need someone. They won't bother you much during your meal. No American Express accepted here, only visa and Mastercard. Overall, it was good and we'd certainly come again for the tofu, but it didn't feel outstanding in total.

Came with my husband and family on Mother's Day. This was the only restaurant that didn't have to wait too long and so we thought to give it a try. Have to agree with the reviews. They have some really good authentic dishes. We love the string bean dish, chongging spicy noodle, cucumber garlic appetizer, the sizzling Japanese tofu. The fam thought their string bean dish was the best they ever had compared to the ones they had in other restaurant. Ambiance ok Service fairly fast and friendly.

Spicy beef with soft tofu

This is just a review on their food as my company did a catering lunch with them. The menu included bean paste beef which is spicy beef slices with soft tofu, braised chicken which is chopped chicken with bones braised in a brown sauce with potato, salt and pepper tofu, shredded potato with spicy sauce, and garlicky choy sum. We were told that the spiciness was toned down from their regular menu and I was able to handle the spicy beef with tofu although I'm really not good at eating spicy food. Still it's spicy, but the ingredients are generous, especially the beef. I don't like the braised chicken just because the chicken pieces have bones. The salt and pepper tofu is the worst because there's not so much salt and pepper flavor but mainly dried tofu. The garlic choy sum is tasty, the veggie are cooked softly and juicy yet not overly oily. Given that it's a spicy cuisine, I'll probably not visit the restaurant myself.

A hidden gem in town that offers great food with good portions. We came here for the highly rated crispy pork, which is sweet and tangy, but we're impressed with how good everything is. The spareribs, braised pork belly and pork feet were all amazing and flavorful. I love how they're rich in flavor. Definitely a great place to come back to.

Highly recommended A very down-to-earth, home-style spot that's great for regular meals. Everything felt comforting and familiar. The spicy pepper with dried tofu was my favorite -- super soft, tender, and really well done. Simple, satisfying food that hits the spot.

Spicy rattan lamb pot 藤椒羊肉

Tldr I love this place. Worth coming with a bigger party to order more things! I'm always sweating when I eat here. The spicy food is spicy and the non spicy food is yummy as well! My favorite dish is the 藤椒羊肉 spicy rattan lamb pot and it's always so good. The spiciness can be variable sometimes but the flavor is always so delicious. Sometimes the service is a bit slow but the food quality more than makes up for it. They are also very good about ingredients and taking things out or substituting when you remember to ask.

The duck is incredibly juicy and looks absolutely mouthwatering. The camphor tea aroma is rich and distinctive, with beautifully fragrant meat and irresistibly crispy skin. This place really has its own signature style when it comes to duck. Wrapped in the pancake, it's a perfect match and unbelievably satisfying. Each bite delivers layers of savory, aromatic, crispy, and tender textures. So flavorful and comforting that it pairs perfectly with rice. Highly recommended!

Lamb, Sour Cabbage

The weather's getting chilly lately, perfect for some hearty comfort food. Finally tried Yuan Bistro, known for its Northeastern Chinese dishes -- the homemade pickled cabbage is amazing. The lamb sauerkraut hotpot was super flavorful and huge for $38, easily enough for two. Loved the stir-fried mixed veggies, totally reminded me of home -- wish they had spring pancakes to go with it! Sizzling tofu was crispy and saucy, and the pork liver was fragrant without any strong taste. Four dishes under $100 -- great value for the Bay Area. Cozy, tasty, and definitely worth coming back!

A friend recommended this restaurant to me. I tried it and was pleasantly surprised. It has been a long time since I had such authentic stir-fried dishes. The dishes had a nice wok aroma, the taste was just the right amount of salty and not greasy. They were so delicious, especially the milky cereal shrimps. I really like them, they are very crispy and fragrant. You will love them so much. I highly recommend! ! ! Chongqing noodles tasted just as I imagined, spicy enough. The stir-fried pork from the farm was fragrant and not greasy, with a refreshing taste of green peppers. All of my choices today were a complete win, all delicious

their fried pork (Guo Bao Rou) is amazing -- super crispy and flavorful! Totally my go-to spot for Chinese food in Milpitas.

First time here, and we came specifically for the "guobaorou". Both the guobaorou and the fried pork chunks were unanimously approved by the four Northeasterners at our table--this is truly authentic old-school guobaorou. Finding this level of quality in the Bay Area is incredibly hard. We highly recommend it! We hope this hidden gem thrives and continues to maintain its high standards for a long time. And to our genuinely skilled Northeastern chef--please don't leave!

Sliced Beef in Spicy Sauce ($14.99)
Rachel L.

My standards are very high when it comes to Chinese/Sichuanese food because my mom is Sichuanese and has introduced me to so many authentic spots. That being said, Yuan Bistro is a good option! The spice is there but not overpowering; good for those that like spicy but can't handle extreme spice. The highlight from our meal was the Braised Pork Belly. Succulent chunks of tender pork belly, quail eggs, and tofu puffs in a delicious fragrant sauce; not spicy but tasty nonetheless. Everything else was also good but I will say that I've had better versions of these dishes at other restaurants. Still, not bad at all. I actually found that everything tasted even better as leftovers. My only suggestion is for them to add more numbing spice to their dishes to replicate that signature Sichuanese flare. Overall, the food here was solid! Good place to satisfy your Chinese food or spicy food cravings. The service was just okay; they really just do the minimum of giving you your food. Spacious spot good for family-style meals too!

The flavor is comforting and well-balanced without being overly salty, and the texture is smooth and satisfying. I highly recommend pairing it with their dough stick (youtiao). It's crispy on the outside, slightly chewy inside, while still staying light and fluffy. Dipping it into the congee completely changes the experience and honestly feels like a must-order combination. Another standout for me is the steamed spareribs with black bean and taro. The spareribs are tender and flavorful, and the black bean sauce adds a savory depth without overpowering the dish. Service continues to be efficient and well-organized, even when busy. One thing I noticed is that the restaurant is especially popular with elderly customers, which honestly says a lot about the food being comforting, traditional, and consistent. Almost every table had some combination of congee, rice rolls, and steamed dishes, which seems to be the way to go here. The Shrimp Rice Rolls are the clear star--the rice noodle is incredibly smooth and thin, which is the mark of a great chang fen. They don't skimp on the shrimp, and the sweet soy sauce ties it all together perfectly. For something heartier, the Wonton Noodle Soup features a very clean, savory broth and snap-to-the-bite noodles. The Pork Congee is also a winner; it's silky, flavorful, and exactly what you want on a cold day or when you're craving something soothing. We also grabbed the Shiu Mai, which were plump and well-seasoned with a great meat-to-shrimp ratio. The kitchen is efficient, and the flavors are consistently authentic. It's a reliable spot for a great quality, traditional meal that never misses the mark. About a month ago, hubby and I came here for an early lunch on a Sunday. We came in time before…read morenoon as the restaurnt became quite busy after. We were seated near the kitchen so we were able to look in and see BTS. The restaurant is very spacious, clean and bright with a modern design. There are booth tables against wall and tables in the middle of the restaurant. A QR code is is availble at the table for you to view menu and order. I actually like this better as I don't feel rush to order and gives me the chance to look through the menu without feeling rush to order. Iced water was brought out instantly. We ordered the following: 1. Lamb skewer, spicy: you can smell the intensity of the spice when the dish was brought out from the chili powder. The meat is moist and grilled well w/ a nice crisp. There is no gamey smell. I took a first bite but the chili powder slightly burned my gums. Had to ask Hubby to shake some of the chili poweder off the skewers for me. Its a messy dish but very tasty. 2. Spicy beef soup w/ wide noodles: Noodles are HUGE! About 1.5 inches wide and forever long. I had to use the scissors to cut it up. Noodles are good. Chewey texture just as I like it. Comes with a whole egg and beef. The broth has a nice spice to it and unlike other spicy noodle soup I've tried, it does not taste oily or overwhelmed with spices esp Sze Chuan chilis. It had a good balace of savory and spiciness. 3. Wide noodles w/ braised chicken: This dish is delish but it's a BIG dish like a whole chicken was prepared! Can feed up to 4-5 people. It's the size of a medium pizza or even a Large. The thick sauce is very flavorful but not salty. It comes with potatoes, carrots, onions, green bell peppers, and dried whole chili. Its not spicy but may be for kids as we have a high spicy tolerance. Only thing about this plate I didn't like it there's bones. We ended 2 more meals with the leftover. The noodles are hand pulled in house as we sat by the kitchen and saw the kitchen staff making it. Food comes out pretty quick and service is very good. The staff are very attentive and met our needs promptly. We definitely will return to try other plates as the menu is pretty big.
