I came here with one of my girlies after having pho. We were craving shaved ice but didn't know if it was still in season since it is 20F outside. I showed my friend a pic of someone eating patbingsu 2 days ago and she immediately recognized the place. She calls it the "gold spoon place" because they serve their shaved ice in a cute, heavy gold bowl with matching gold spoons. From outside, I could not tell what they sold but once we walked in, I saw the duk or rice cakes against the wall. They specialize in rice cakes and we sampled one of them (too bad I don't know what it was called..) There are only two patbingsu options - red bean $7.99 and cinnamon $8.99. We got the red bean and waited for the lady to bring it over. My friend and I were confused because the menu didn't say what else was included but I looked at previous pics and it looked pretty epic! On top of shaved ice, she piled on red bean paste (definitely homemade), dry date chips, duk, dry figs, and fine khaki colored powder. It is very different from the patbingsu I have tried at other dessert cafes. It was mildly sweet from the red bean paste, which is why I gave it 5 stars!! (I hate sweet stuff, maybe it's from working as a dental assistant for 3 years?) It is a healthy and "cleansing" way to end dinner. Two other reviewers have stated that there is a language barrier. I have not tried communicating with the lady since I came here with a Korean friend and she ordered for the two of us. But I believe that non-Korean speakers may have trouble ordering if they do not know what they want. The menu was simple, so do not expect detailed descriptions of each item. I will be returning!!! If you don't speak Korean its very hard to communicate with the lady that works there. She spoke very little English and couldn't explain to me what the products were. Also their tea menu is in Korean too and it doesn't have an English translation nor could the lady tell me what kind of tea the store offers. A little disappointed that I didn't have the choice to pick what i wanted cause of the language barrier. But in the end, i got a buckwheat tea (with free refills) and it comes with a type of rice cake dessert (for free). Came across the place after having dinner next door. It is a clean desserts store and the ladies there barely speaks English. All of their desserts are labeled in Korean, so if you're not Korean- keep your fingers crossed because you won't know what you're buying. We bought something called Injulmi and a whitish flour cake with raisins. The Injulmi is bland and has no taste. It has no expiration on the label and there's no mention of refrigeration. Within 24 hours, mold started to grow. Absolutely Disgusting. But desserts were disappointing with bland taste. It's like eating a piece of white toast. I tried both the cinnamon (sujeonggwa) bingsoo and regular patbingsoo (the only two flavors offered). I liked the presentation with the gold spoons and metal bowls. They both had jujube chips and rice cakes - yum. The cinnamon one has a strong soojunggwa (korean persimmon punch) flavor. It's VERY cinnamon-y, almost spicy, and has pieces of persimmon as well. The regular patbingsoo was good too although i thought the red bean was a little too thick and bland. Some parts of the ice weren't shaved fully either and I got some chunks. It's not a big deal usually but because the size of the bingsoo itself isn't that large, the ice chunk seems bigger proportionately. They are less sweet and much smaller than most patbingsoos sold around the flushing/bayside area (a little bigger than half of one). But they're cheaper too ($8 / $9), so that's sort of fair. Personally, I like cocohodo's bingsoo much better. I think this suited my mom's taste though, so I'd probably bring her back here. I walked in here next to a more trendy coffee shop, immediately had I been fascinated with the interior, music and vibe. It's so quiet and chill, very sincere space with wooden furnitures, well presented wall of traditional Korean sweets (rice cakes, mochi, candies, etc), many of which I could not even name. We were craving for red bean sweets so we ordered the red bean shaved ice and the red bean portridge, which was warm. I love the milky flavor of the shaved ice, the red bean paste was very sweet and creamy. I didn't like the portridge too much, it was not salty or sweet, it was not hot or cold, just lukewarm which was strange. The metal spoons they served represent YeDon's aesthetics, the tea cups were beautiful, I had a green tea and my friends had buckwheat tea, they all smelled very nice, the hostest came to refill our pots whenever we needed, it's a quiet place to have girls chit-chats. read more

It is definitely a place with non-standard patbingsoo/shaved ice. The shaved ice is expensive for the amount you're getting so I would only recommend going for the novelty of the flavors that they provide. They do taste pretty good. When I went, they completely forgot to my order. I went to the register with my receipt 30 minutes after ordering (and noticing that the 3 other groups after mine all got their orders). The lady was like "did you order with me?" and I said I ordered with the other lady. Then she goes to the back with my receipt and is asking "what is this order??" They apologized and got my order out within 10-15 minutes but no explanation, no service, nothing. read more

A very small and simple bakery/cafe shop. They have an assortment of traditional rice flour-based korean breads, cakes and cookies. I wanted to buy all of them! You can tell they put a lot of time, detail and effort into making their bakery items. It was a refreshing step away from big chain asian bakeries. They value their craft and take great pride in making what they make. Small shops like these make me so happy to support small businesses. Their bingsoo is really the best I have had - just like a lot of the other reviews say. It was light and refreshing. It feels very artisanal and of high quality. They add crunchy dried dates, which I have never had in bingsoo before. It was the best invention and idea ever. I don't think I can ever have bingsoo without these crunchy dried dates again, nothing else will compare. They give you red bean compote on the side. Like everything else they have, the red bean compote is made from scratch. You can really taste and feel the difference in quality in this cute shop. I'm not too fond of their rice flour cakes because I don't like half mochi half bread - like cakes. But it was very cool and unique to try this traditional korean style bakery. read more

Came here with some friends to try their patbingsu. We were not disappointed! The ice was so light and delicious you couldn't feel guilty eating it. We had the redbean flavor one. They don't have many flavor choice but. I definitely recommend trying redbean. The cafe is cute and cozy. I'm an English teacher of Koreans and they took me here today. I've had papingsu from a huge variety of places and this place had 2 kinds only. They were definitely the *best I've tried*. $7.99 and $8.99, only 2 kinds to choose from, one with beans (nothing from cans) and dried dates, and one with cinnamon/pine nuts/I forget what else. Both excellent; try both if you can, and bring a friend. They come in beautiful gold bowls with matching gold spoons. Papingsu is a shaved ice desert, usually with some milk, and with sweet red beans. Some other toppings usually accompany it. The other one is not papingsu but LIKE papingsu so just say "Shaved ice dessert with cinnamon, not the papingsu" and they should understand, because I think "pap" means beans (one part of that word means beans, i don't know which). The various rice cakes mostly have stickers on them with ingredients. They are excellent prices. Try whatever looks interesting! Anything and everything. Rice cake is mochi. You know mochi, those little marshmellow-looking dough balls that come as an optional topping at red mango? That's rice cake. This is a rice cake shop. They also specialize in this shaved ice dessert I was describing, and they have a few types of teas. The tea is from Korea and is very high-quality. We had chamomile, which consisted of a little tea bag with about 10 chamomile flowers, wholly intact. Really pretty and very delicious. They have samples at the front. One of my favorite rice cake desserts are the little colored balls. They have some sort of filling; I forget which, maybe honey-sweetened bits of walnuts. Injulmi is also good, especially the kind with a bit of honey (vs. non-sweetened; just look at the ingredients). Many places add sugar to injulmi which is really good, though I don't know if this place does. They also have sesame seed snacks, as sesame is a very popular ingredient in South Korea. For a taste of common South Korean desserts, just go and pick a variety of items and share with some friends, but first and foremost I recommend the shaved ice dessert! read more

I was a little skeptical about how the shaved ice would taste with nuts but the sliced almonds and dried dates added a nice crunch that was a nice contrast with the red bean, rice cake and shaved ice. The product is great - it's their customer service that's the problem. Went in around 6pm today to look around and grab a few to take home. From the moment I walked in- it was a bad experience. For a Korean business, there was no usual greeting or welcoming (and it wasn't a language barrier, as I am Korean) and I was just ignored. When I went to pick up a piece from the counter, she (the owner) watched me like I was going to try and steal it (it's just $2 pieces btw). And when I came to get rung up, I spoke Korean and that's when she opened up more, but still took a call while ringing me up. She didn't finish ringing me up, and just walked away on the call. The 2nd woman came over and just took the money, placed the receipt on the counter and walked away too. I had to bag my own things, while their backs were to me. Again for a Korean business- it's unusual to be treated this way, without any type of greeting or response. Very rude. Good product, but horrible service. Don't think I'll be going back. read more

Price is similar to other places but this place they don't add any fruits or ice cream just milky shaved ice and sweet redbean paste with some ricecake and dried jujube fruits. I have been having crazy shave ice cravings, so came here to try theirs. The bingsoo itself was good enough (served in a glass bowl, but not quite enough toppings). What turned us off was their attitude. We were questioned whether we really wanted bingsoo since they were closing in 40 minutes (!!) I don't know about you, but I don't think it is possible not to split one bowl between two in 15-20 mins max since it, you know, melts. While we were waiting, I asked about their special order rice cakes for milestones (quite spendy). The owner (?) Was nice enough to show me the book, though she declared it's too early for me to make any orders. Then, they proceeded to complain loudly with another regular on how the business is slow, etc. There was no background music btw. If I really want some rice cake to go, I may drop by, but wouldn't eat here again. On the positive, they DO speak at least some English, enough to complete transactions. read more

Had to come back for a 2nd time, in less than a month, to buy two versions of the Korean rice cakes (Honey Dduk and Baram Dduck). No doubt will be returning countless many more times in the near future. Whoever we share them with are also surprised how good they taste! Not quite sure about the language barrier that previous reviewers mentioned, perhaps the company fixed that problem now. If a Jamaican and a Trinidadian can communicate effectively with Koreans, then this is my proof that we all certainly shared the same language of English. Very frustrating because there is no English translation menu whatsoever. From the outside I couldn't tell what in the world this business sold or offered, and it is hard to see what they sell through the windows so I went in and looked for myself. They sell traditional korean rice cakes, both sweet and savory and various teas. It looks very cozy, clean, and the offerings look tasty. The staff seems nice, welcoming, and willing to help but there was difficulty from the language barrier. Prices seem reasonable at $2-4 for bite size treats but it really turned me off that nothing was in English so I had no clue what anything was. I'll be back when they decide to put up some English!!! And they REALLY need to put up a picture or SOMETHING (like an English word; or a picture menu) outside on their door/window to show passerbys what they sell. read more

My mom ordered two of their box sets for New Years Day at my in-laws. One was filled with various types of dduk (rice cakes), and the other with traditional Korean treats. To be honest I only liked a few of the dduk types, but it may be because they were all made of healthy ingredients. Best authentic shaved iced. Quality of ice is perfect; light, fluffy and soft. The ice has a hint of coconut flavor in it. Absolutely delicious. I do wish they had a green tea flavored one though. read more
