I really enjoyed Mr. Tu Bakery! This small Chinese bakery offers various baked items and pastries, as well as hot and cold drinks. I wanted to try their curry chicken pie, but was told that they did not have those available - either they ran out really quicky early in the morning, or the items are not offered all the time? I did try a 'fish breakfast sandwich', which was part of their bread/pastries selection - it was a soft fluffy bread filled with a fried fish filet, sliced cucumbers, lettuce, and some mayo - this was actually pretty delicious! It could have been warmer, but the sandwich was still fresh and yummy; great for a little snack! Staff were super kind, friendly, and welcoming. This is more of a to-go type of place, but I can see how this is a favorite with the locals. This is a very small bakery compared to the other ones that have a bigger storefront with much more traffic however, do not let that discourage you from trying their goods. I would say that the pricing is about the same as other stores that are more popular, however they are unique in their own way that they make more dim sum style desserts that are located in the fridge on top of their traditional Chinese cupcakes and pastries . Service wise. Some of the staff don't know English so it could be a little hard to communicate. I believe they do take card but I was paying in cash at the end. My total was about $30. I'm not sure how i ended up there, I think I was hungry, but I would definitely check this place out if you are around the area and need a little bit more traditional pastries. read more

Pretty cute bakery, would come back and try some more of the bread. My mom came by and bought a cake bread which was a cake that was invaded by bread; not my most favorite but it was interesting. I was more interested in the other bread that sounded good but didn't get to try. read more

Mission: to acquire a Chinese birthday cake with chestnut filling. Pre-requisite: no chains. As a person who tends to flock to the trendy French style Korean bakeries, I was at a lost. I did not want to go to Fay Da (bad customer service) or Taipan (their cake tasted very cornflakey). So I decided to walk down Roosevelt and try my luck. The new bakery with the White Rabbit Roll didn't carry chestnut filling, and Shakalaka wasn't opened yet, so I stumbled into Mr. Tu. The staff asked me in Mandarin what I would like and I asked about a chestnut cake. Just my luck, they do carry it! I placed an order for a 6" chestnut filling birthday cake for $30. When I came back on pickup day, the cake was ready in the fridge for me. Design? Very chic and pretty. They placed a Happy Birthday plastic plaque and wrote 爸爸 on the bottom. Taste? Right off Main Street, this little coffee shop is a great place to sit down and feed your sweet tooth. Not really many cheap and friendly places on busy Roosevelt Avenue to sit down and take a break. Mr. Tu's is one of those places. Even though we had some shumai from another place, the counter person here was so kind as to let us sit and enjoy our other food along with the coffees that we purchased. My wife and I sat down and relaxed unhurried at one of the small tables that they have inside here. It was great Vantage Spot to watch busy Flushing pass by. Roosevelt Avenue and Main are one of the main Metropolitan exchange Hubs where folks depart their buses and cabs and enter the subway system or vice versa. This little bakery is right outside the number 7 Subway stairwell. The buses of Roosevelt Avenue line the streets waiting for the thousands of folks that are on their way. Tu's is also right on the way as you walk down Roosevelt Ave. to "The Metropolitan's" Citi Field. What a nice little spot this is to inexpensively and unassumingly take a few moments as you're on the way. My lovely pregnant wife craves the breakfast sandwiches that are available here. She says that this resembles some breakfast items available in her native Taoyuan City on the island of Taiwan. Whenever I cannot sleep on a weekend morning, which is quite often, I come here to buy breakfast sandwiches because this place appears to open every single day at 6:00 a.m. It's great to get here at 6 a.m., and many people appear to agree with me, because there's almost always a line of early birds ahead of me buying baked goods! Food: the chicken cutlet breakfast sandwich is my wife's favorite. I personally love the turkey croissant breakfast sandwich, though I wish there was an option for chicken cutlet croissant or ham and egg with a croissant. Alas, this isn't available. I also recommend the Pineapple Buns! Buy over a certain amount, you even get a free World Journal Newspaper (while the day's supply lasts!) Service: the women behind the counter are beyond kind and extremely responsive to needs. Decor: everything is so clean, which is important for a bakery. The "sibling bakery" to this place is Apollo Bakery. Apollo makes the zongzi in the morning and has other items not available here, so be sure to check out both if you're looking for something specific, I know I almost always head to both! read more

A decent Taiwanese bakery in Flushing. Pastries and breads are always baked fresh in the kitchen towards the back of the store. I always get brownies here, but try to try something different each time. Chocolate Brownie($1)- The texture is similar to that of a cake, but I really like it. Really moist, chocolate-y, and not too condensed. Watermelon Slush/Smoothie($3.50)- When I saw plastic cups filled with chopped watermelon way at the front, I had to get this! I haven't had a true watermelon slush/smoothie in ages. The watermelon slush/smoothie here was alright though. Too watery and much too sweet. I would be better off buying a whole watermelon from the supermarket and making my own. Chocolate Melon Bread($1.25)- It's like a Pineapple Bun or a Japanese Melon Bun, but this tasted pretty good! This also tasted pretty chocolate-y. The bread was not too soft and easy to chew. read more

A clean, friendly bakery with nicer decor than many of the surrounding places. The quality of their baked goods is good and you don't have to pay a premium for the nicer atmosphere. Their coffee is a bit bland so I have to say, Quickly got my vote in that specific item. However, their breads are fabulous and so tasty and most of all - FRESH! Their items are bigger than most Chinese bakery around the area and the prices are pretty reasonable. Despite the fact that this shop is so tiny, I always find a seat to enjoy my goodies! The location, as others said, is so convenient. It's just across from the New World Mall on the Roosevelt Ave. side. We came here because a friend of a relative raved about their mooncakes. Now, I love mooncakes as much as the next girl, but when they grow mold within 2 weeks of purchase (with mooncake day not even having arrived yet), it really makes me wonder what the heck is going on. Not to mention at $6 a pop, that is $12 down the drain due to poor packaging/manufacturing. I don't visit Flushing enough to go back w/ these products (not to mention, that would mean I'd have to keep the mold infested cakes in my house). Why 3 stars, you ask? Well, the lotus seed filling in these moon cakes are REALLY yummy. It's super smooth, and has just the right balance of sugar and other. I much prefer the larger moon cakes (w/ the traditional outside), to the smaller individual ones w/ the flaky outside, but all my large mooncakes had to be tossed, so I'm stuck w/ the little ones (which were $2 a pop). I come here to get their lemon braid roll. It's fresh, airy and full of lemony deliciousness. The lemon custard is smooth and it doesn't have an overbearing taste like the ones at Maxim bakery. It is what it is, and it certainly serves my purposes just fine. The two or three older patrons who are always spotted at the tables seem to agree. I usually stop by for coffee with milk tea* and a pastry during my Sunday morning commutes to church. It's conveniently located right outside the 7 train and across the street from my bus stop. The selection of pastries isn't inventive or varied but you can find usually find all the classic Chinese bakery buns and cakes. I tend to go for the multigrain raisin bread because it's less sweet and has raisins, which is a good filling in my book. Next to the register, they usually have a small basket with discounted cookies/breads that may not be as fresh as the shelved ones. My experiences with items from this bin haven't been any less great than buying the supposed fresher ware. Fifty percent saved never hurt my wallet any, amIright? *Yup, in one drink. Genius. If not for the super-sized caffeine level, I would drink this all the livelong day. read more

We stopped by this little bakery shop after a belly full of xiao long bao, and found some decent chiffon cake at slightly above average costs. That being said, the cake was light, fluffy and recently baked, which is an automatic win. It is certainly the cleaner alternative in Flushing and I'd consider returning to try out some of their other Chinese bakery items. read more

This is your standard Chinese bakery in the middle of a very Chinese-heavy neighborhood. I usually grab a drink and a pastry on my way to work. They may not have as many offerings (when it comes to pastries) as, say... Taipei or Fay Da, but they offer the standards, like sponge cakes, lemon rolls, and taro buns. They're fast and usually quite courteous to you as well, which is not always the case at other Chinese bakeries in the area. read more

The location makes this bakery incredibly convenient. I'll usually frequent this place for a coffee or milk tea and a raisin bread right before heading to the 7 train. The prices are surprisingly much cheaper than competitor bakeries. They have a large selection of fresh baked breads, pastries, cakes, and little meals.
