Pandan 班蘭 ($1.50), Classic 經典 ($1), Mango 芒果 ($1.50), Chocolate 巧克力 ($1.50) sponge cakes 包蛋糕

BLUF: 3.5 stars out of 5 stars. Not as good as Manhattan's best sponge cakes, but good enough. Kam Hing Coffee Shop (金興小吃店) and Spongies Café (紙包蛋糕咖啡店) -- both in Chinatown, Manhattan, make the best Chinese-style sponge cakes (紙包蛋糕 , literally, "paper-wrapped cakes") in New York City. Golden Sponge (金典紙包蛋糕), which takes over Original Cake's space in the revamped Golden Mall (黃金商場), seems to aspire to become the third business in NYC to specialize in sponge cakes, for Queens and Downtown Flushing in particular. Our first visit to Golden Sponge was during a soft-opening afternoon, when they had four flavors of sponge cakes remaining -- regular ('Classic'; 經典), Pandan 班蘭, Chocolate 巧克力, and Mango 芒果. Golden Sponge's sponge cakes are slightly denser, moister, and more flavorful than the sponge cakes found in most other Chinese bakeries (besides Kam Hing and Spongies); and are smaller and proportionately less expensive. Kam Hing's and Spongies' cakes are airier. It seems that Golden Sponge's flavors are generally stronger than Kam Hing's. A pandan sponge cake at Kam Hing, for example, tastes like a regular sponge cake with a hint of pandan -- one has to think about it; while a Pandan sponge cake at Golden Sponge has an identifiable pandan flavor. Golden Sponge's Pandan, Mango, and Matcha cakes have good amounts of flavor; their Chocolate and Strawberry cakes less so. The Matcha cake was a little powdery. Golden Sponge's regular sponge cakes cost $1 each; flavored sponge cakes cost $1.50 each. The 50% markup for a flavored sponge cake is seems excessive, but is negligible for small purchases. While Spongies Café is my favorite place for sponge cakes, Golden Sponge makes sponge cakes good enough that I might not travel to Chinatown, Manhattan, to get them. Accessibility: Golden Sponge is the first stall from Golden Mall's 41st Road entrance (by the Q58 / Q98 Limited terminus). This entrance has a short flight of 3 steps into the mall, while the Main Street entrance has a longer, narrower, and steeper flight of stairs. Golden Sponge has no seating, so everything for purchase is for take-out.

Can't beat the value. It's only a buck. Perfect size for tiny kids. My little niece loves them. Until Friday, November 7, they are having a grand opening special of $1 for all cakes. Personally I find them just ok. I tried a few of the flavors. The best one is mango. Strawberry was my least favorite. Other than sponge cakes, they do offer a few other desserts like egg tarts and mini souffles. Also drinks are on the menu but nothing special. Service. All the servers are super nice. And speak English. Located in the tiny basement food court. No seating. Takeout only.

Absolutely fantastic stuffed mochi. We had the mango pomelo cream cheese and taro paste coated in cinnamon crunch. The young lady put so much filling in! The mochi is pleasantly chewy and the fillings were delicious. The taro paste was my favorite of the two. I was really looking forward to trying this and it didn't disappoint!

Came to try one of their combos (A). It was for a large coffee & 2 sponge cakes. It didn't didn't specify what flavor on the poster outside, but inside, it clarified it by showcasing 2 other combos. Each combo after is 50 cents more to add a sponge cake flavor. The sponge cake as a single is $1 and is pretty small. I compared it to a remote (pic included), and it was half the size. Its a great size for a toddler. The value for the combos are not any cheaper. The traditional Chinese bakery sponge cakes are hard to beat for value and size (~$2). The tea was not strong either. Not worth a try unfortunately

Saw the viral mochi pop-up online and I love mochi so I had to stop by and try it. They're with the golden sponge shop now. Two flavors mochi cost me $9 and it is humongous. One can easily be shared by 3 people or more. The mochi is soft and chewy. I did taro and matcha filling. The fillings weren't too sweet, taro filling was a paste. The matcha filling tasted like very light and fluffy matcha whipped cream cheese filling. They have a variety of fillings available like red bean, taro, chocolate cream, matcha cream, strawberry cream, lychee rose cream, and mango cream. They also cover the outside in a couple options like peanuts, cornflakes, crushed Oreos, porkfloss. I did the cornflakes an it added just the right crunch.

Furthermore, I appreciate how they respect the COVID regulations, and offered me free curb side pick up. (PS They were very courteous.) Now on to the cake itself. First off, the cake was moist and dense at the same time, which I really liked. It wasn't too overwhelmingly sweet - this is important, since I served it to older adults, who are not fond of super sugary, diabetes inducing cakes (hahah ). But they appreciated the cinnamon-y taste from the pumpkin spice cake. Furthermore, all the fruit on the cake was fresh. There were pomegranate seeds, blueberries, blackberries, and strawberries. All 1000% ripe, fresh, with the right amount of sweetness. The fruits did not seem to be pre-frozen and thawed either. Lastly, the rosemary and cinnamon sticks were a very nice touch to the cake. It made it look more earthy in my opinion. Most importantly, my grandma loved the cake! So thank you very much for putting a smile on my Lola's face for her birthday!

The tables are close enough and small enough to hear what your neighbors are saying to each other, imagine what they think of you? LOL I noticed speaker music was playing a bit louder then the last time I was there. The fact that patrons have to shout over each other while sharing speaker music doesn't help with the ambience of enjoying a delicious cake over an interesting conversation. I ordered something new this time, a delicious lava cake with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Why didn't I see that description on my check? Strange. I also visited their website online, and noticed a lot of Stock Ai made photos and videos. I even found the website hard to navigate as well because it wasn't loaded with actual cakes and up to date pricing. So quite honestly the online website wasn't helpful with what they had in the shop. * Perhaps a future improvement between tables might be an above head moveable divider which actually could provide some privacy. Something I guarantee would be way more inviting than the current seating arrangement. The Review Guru Long Island NY

It is super sweet and even sweeter with whipped cream. It is unlike any hot chocolate I've ever had. Get it. For dessert, I like the Pineapple Shortcake, which is available at the Forest Hills Martha's, but not in Bayside. I thought I saw it once, but it turned out to be a Lemon Meringue cake. Instead, I'll go for a slice of Apple Pie, Strawberry Shortcake, Blue or Red Velvet cakes or the Oreo Mousse. If you would like to enjoy your cake and coffee in house, there is table service. There are plenty of 2 topper café tables, but if you have a bigger party, they will park a bunch of them together for you, if it's not too busy. If you get here before 8pm, tables are readily available, but it can get crowded as the evening progresses. We were surprised recently, when they sat 6 of us with no wait. They are open before the crack of dawn at 6am until 1am on Friday & Saturday nights. I imagine that the ovens never cool off and the bakers are there on the overnight shift to bake plenty of cakes ready for the next day. It's not unusual to still have a line to order out at 10-11pm and the display cases are still packed with cakes & pies.

It's absolutely amazing, and the filling is very generous--it feels like heaven in every bite. Another favorite of mine is the chocolate layer cake: rich, velvety smooth chocolate that isn't overly sweet. The only thing I don't agree with is that they do not clearly tell customers that dining in adds an extra $1 charge to each item. Yes, check your receipt. I'm expected to tip my waitstaff and also pay an extra dollar per item just because I chose to dine in. For example, the cupcake is usually $4.75 to go, but they charged me an extra $1 for dining in. Their cake slices are usually $9.50 to go, but I was charged $10.50. I also tipped 20%, so the added charge felt frustrating, especially since there was no clear notice. When I asked the waitstaff about the $1 charge, she said it was entered that way because I dined in. When I later called about it, the manager simply said, "Next time, just order to go if you don't want to be charged extra." That response was disappointing, especially since there was no visible sign explaining this policy, and their dine-in menu does not show separate pricing. I really think management should fix this to avoid misleading customers. Transparency matters. Don't get me wrong--I would still come back because their cakes are amazing, but from now on, I'll always order everything to go.

Over the years, I have tried many of their desserts since it's one of the only decent dessert options around the area. However, it would not be my first choice if I had others. With that said, my whole family and many of my friends all agree that their best item is the Berry Napoleon. That is the one cake that I do enjoy from this shop. We often buy a whole cake for a group gathering or birthdays. As for dining in, there's always a lot of people inside the store and it gets a bit loud. Not my favorite place to relax and chat with my friends. That's why I only buy takeout when I do get the Berry Napoleon. I think I do prefer the Astoria original location more.
