Been seeing a lot of reviews and videos from @kittycateva of this place about this huge Mochi. Since we were in flushing, we decided to check it out. For the filling, you get to choose 2 or 3 fillings, but we got 2 fillings to try out. We got the mango pomelo & strawberry with rice powder for the dusting. They accept cards unless it's $5 but they do not take discovery cards. Super fresh and not overly sweet, which I was surprised by. Located inside Golden Mall a block away from Main Street. No ambiance wise, just a typical food stand inside a food court. Easy to miss it if you don't know the store name since Golden Sponge doesn't indicate they're selling mochi unless you're actually there yourself or you see a picture from someone's review. Besides the giant mochi, they also sell very affordable sponge cakes ranging from $1 to $1.50. The giant mochi is getting viral for being the size of a huge blob and the different fillings you can have being stuffed inside (wrapped with the mochi) depending on various prices. My friends and I got the giant mochi with four fillings. Total turns out to be $14. We have chosen mango pomelo + cookie & cream + strawberry + lychee rose. We're amazed by the vibrant colors side by side next to each other. It is a very cool process to watch the staff make it in person. Would be best to eat the mochi freshly made. Don't try to eat it by yourself though because it's way too fulfilling imo. Best to split the whole thing between 3-5 people. The ratio of cream cheese to the fruit pieces is mainly 8:2 which I didn't expect it. To be honest, I am expecting more fruit and not only few pieces as garnish. Realistically, you're eating 80% cream cheese and 20% of the thin mochi consistency. If you're lactose intolerant, it might not stomach too well in your digestive system. The staff has mixed in everything together. However, I can't tell what I am exactly eating or if I can actually differentiate between the 4 filling flavors. Its presentation of the pastel cotton candy colors is top notch nonetheless. Picture worthy for IG/TikTok, although taste wise falls short from here for me. Overall, there's way too much cream cheese inside. Also, the mochi texture gets lost within the rich filling. The first two bites are fine. But as you keep digging in, you get the feeling of being overwhelmed by a sugar overload. Therefore, you will feel very full after just a few bites. Another thing is that, they should've provided chopsticks or forks rather than plastic spoons. Not gonna lie, but it's pretty hard to actually scoop the mochi up. Like I'm saying, I don't recommend this dessert for those who can't tolerate anything dairy. The giant mochi is officially a "once-and-done" dessert for me. Might be great for filming a viral video, but save that money for something else more worthwhile instead. read more

I've been a long time fan of Kam Hing sponge cakes in Manhattan Chinatown. So when I heard that Golden Sponge Cakes opened in Flushing, I knew I had to go check them out. I knew it would be really hard to beat Kam Hing sponge cakes but I had hope they would be similar. But, Nope, Definitely NOT as good as Kam Hing. Maybe my expectations were too high but I was disappointed. Golden Sponge Cakes have pretty good texture and has a wide variety of flavors but they lack that delicious egg flavor. I also found the flavors at Golden Sponge kinda artificial. I tried 3 flavors: -- Original ($1): good but didn't have that good eggy sponge cake taste that Kam Hing has. -- Pandam ($1.50): this was good but the flavoring was a little artificial tasting. -- Mango ($1.50): ditto to the Pandam. Good but artificial tasting. Would I go back to Golden Sponge? Maybe. I very rarely go to Manhattan Chinatown these days but Kam Hing is definitely my choice for sponge cakes. So Golden Sponge is still a good option even though they're mediocre. read more

Can't beat the value. It's only a buck. Perfect size for tiny kids. My little niece loves them. Until Friday, November 7, they are having a grand opening special of $1 for all cakes. Personally I find them just ok. I tried a few of the flavors. The best one is mango. Strawberry was my least favorite. Other than sponge cakes, they do offer a few other desserts like egg tarts and mini souffles. Also drinks are on the menu but nothing special. Service. All the servers are super nice. BLUF: 3.5 stars out of 5 stars. Not as good as Manhattan's best sponge cakes, but good enough. Kam Hing Coffee Shop (金興小吃店) and Spongies Café (紙包蛋糕咖啡店) -- both in Chinatown, Manhattan, make the best Chinese-style sponge cakes (紙包蛋糕 , literally, "paper-wrapped cakes") in New York City. Golden Sponge (金典紙包蛋糕), which takes over Original Cake's space in the revamped Golden Mall (黃金商場), seems to aspire to become the third business in NYC to specialize in sponge cakes, for Queens and Downtown Flushing in particular. Our first visit to Golden Sponge was during a soft-opening afternoon, when they had four flavors of sponge cakes remaining -- regular ('Classic'; 經典), Pandan 班蘭, Chocolate 巧克力, and Mango 芒果. Golden Sponge's sponge cakes are slightly denser, moister, and more flavorful than the sponge cakes found in most other Chinese bakeries (besides Kam Hing and Spongies); and are smaller and proportionately less expensive. Kam Hing's and Spongies' cakes are airier. It seems that Golden Sponge's flavors are generally stronger than Kam Hing's. A pandan sponge cake at Kam Hing, for example, tastes like a regular sponge cake with a hint of pandan -- one has to think about it; while a Pandan sponge cake at Golden Sponge has an identifiable pandan flavor. Golden Sponge's Pandan, Mango, and Matcha cakes have good amounts of flavor; their Chocolate and Strawberry cakes less so. The Matcha cake was a little powdery. Golden Sponge's regular sponge cakes cost $1 each; flavored sponge cakes cost $1.50 each. The 50% markup for a flavored sponge cake is seems excessive, but is negligible for small purchases. While Spongies Café is my favorite place for sponge cakes, Golden Sponge makes sponge cakes good enough that I might not travel to Chinatown, Manhattan, to get them. Accessibility: Golden Sponge is the first stall from Golden Mall's 41st Road entrance (by the Q58 / Q98 Limited terminus). This entrance has a short flight of 3 steps into the mall, while the Main Street entrance has a longer, narrower, and steeper flight of stairs. Came to try one of their combos (A). It was for a large coffee & 2 sponge cakes. It didn't didn't specify what flavor on the poster outside, but inside, it clarified it by showcasing 2 other combos. Each combo after is 50 cents more to add a sponge cake flavor. The sponge cake as a single is $1 and is pretty small. I compared it to a remote (pic included), and it was half the size. Its a great size for a toddler. The value for the combos are not any cheaper. The traditional Chinese bakery sponge cakes are hard to beat for value and size (~$2). The tea was not strong either. Absolutely fantastic stuffed mochi. We had the mango pomelo cream cheese and taro paste coated in cinnamon crunch. The young lady put so much filling in! The mochi is pleasantly chewy and the fillings were delicious. The taro paste was my favorite of the two. I was really looking forward to trying this and it didn't disappoint! read more

Saw the viral mochi pop-up online and I love mochi so I had to stop by and try it. They're with the golden sponge shop now. Two flavors mochi cost me $9 and it is humongous. One can easily be shared by 3 people or more. The mochi is soft and chewy. I did taro and matcha filling. The fillings weren't too sweet, taro filling was a paste. The matcha filling tasted like very light and fluffy matcha whipped cream cheese filling. They have a variety of fillings available like red bean, taro, chocolate cream, matcha cream, strawberry cream, lychee rose cream, and mango cream. They also cover the outside in a couple options like peanuts, cornflakes, crushed Oreos, porkfloss. I did the cornflakes an it added just the right crunch. read more

I love grabbing a few of these sponge cakes when I am nearby. Good for an early snack or quick breakfast break. Also very cheap at $1 for original and $1.50 for special flavors like pandan, ube, strawberry, chocolate chip, coffee and milktea. The rainbow one is their birthday cake flavor with sprinkles. There is also a make your own mochi stand to make a giant fresh mochi ball with lots of fillings next to where they have the cakes. They also sell eggtarts which I have yet to try but are about $2.75 but if you buy more you can get a discount. The cakes here are quite bouncy and not too dry but I like a more browned top. Also their size is slightly smaller than the other chinese bakeries but cheaper. The stand is actually easier to get to if you go to the side entrance of the mall around the corner as opposed to going down the stairs. There is really no seating here so its best to grab and go. The gals behind the counter try to make several batches throughout the day and helped me with picking the flavors. But these are definitely great to pick up for the kids to munch on after school or as a little sweet treat with bubble tea. read more

I tried the plain and mango sponge cakes and they were good. Definitely not as good as Kam Hing in Chinatown though, but decent for Queens. The plain could be a little "eggier" for a richer taste. The texture was fine, but the "mango taste" reminded me of artifical mango candy. Both flavors were light and fluffy. I wouldn't get the mango one again, though. read more

First time picking up their sponge cake. We got strawberry, durian, pandas and original. We tried the strawberry and durian and found them moist, fluffy, spongy and fresh. Tasted pretty good! It's in a basement mall that has been renovated and service is takeout. Didn't take pics. At $1.50 a sponge not too badly priced. read more

Perfect snack with my coffee. Very nice people working there. The price is very reasonable too - a buck for a classic. Like an elevated version of the angel food cake I grew up on. They are downstairs in the Golden Mall near the 41st entrance. read more
