I'd been coming to this bakery in Flushing for awhile now. It's such a great addition to the Flushing community. The staff is friendly and it's easy to communicate with them especially with cake orders. I ordered this pika chu cake for my sister's birthday and it was $25 bucks. The filling includes custard and taro. I really love this cake it's so addicting. It's really delicious, you can't just have one slice. The cake has a moist sponge cake texture and it's so light. Also in most Chinese bakery, their cake is not so sugary, it's about right. This bakery has bar stool seating where you can enjoy your coffee and pastries. They don't have a bathroom and it's cash only. Order the cake in advance, there's a picture board of cake pictures that you can choose from. They also sell many tasty sweets such as cream puffs, taro buns and so much more.
I was really dissatisfied and disappointed with the quality and outcome of the cake. I only gave it two stars because the person I spoke to on the phone was really nice and patient. However, the sponge cake didn't taste like anything, literally like nothing. There was barely any fruit even though I asked for fresh fruit (mango, strawberries, melons). It was a lot of icing, way too much inside and outside. The cake didn't look exactly like the picture that I chose out of the catalog which was disappointing. I was also disappointed in the fact that, they don't do custom cakes but then I saw on google reviews they've done it for other customers. When I had requested about custom cakes, they said they don't do any so maybe it was a language barrier. Overall, I wouldn't comeback here again, I've had much better Chinese cakes, this was utterly disappointing :(
I'm surprised I haven't seen anyone post about their cream puffs. Must be a hidden secret. I got a taro cream puff and I wish I had ordered the Oreo and chocolate to try also, next time. I think it was $3.75 a cream puff and it was huge, way bigger than the cream puff place in sky view mall. It was really thick layer of taro that I thought would be too thick and sticky, but it wasn't. I'll stop by to try the other flavors.
Went in to order a cake for 60 people, was told to get the 18 inch although I wanted the 10 inch. I settled for 12 inch ($100) which was too much for 60 ppl. I ordered a chocolate cake with pudding and lychee jelly filling. The top of the cake had various fruit such as grapes, apple, kiwi, dragonfruit, peach. It had macarons & chocolate on the side. Everybody who tried the cake loved it! I loved it! I only wish they had various cake slices to try. I wanted to try the green tea and the chocolate beforehand to see which I wanted.
This used to be our go to bakery for cakes but the quality has gotten so bad that we'll no longer return. We order an 8" cake at 3pm and they said it will be ready by 5 pm. It was ready but terrible looking. The cream was so thick, like 1 in thick so we only got 7" worth of cake. The taro had chucks that weren't fully cooked and no taro flavor like before. I ate a small piece of eggshell too. And did I mention the design?! Horrendous! Look liked it was done by a 6 year old. They also got the name wrong even tho it was spelled 3 times over the phone! Last but not least, the service was terrible, had a very mean attitude when we went to pick up the cake. Would not recommend this bakery to anyone! Ever since they changed owner, the quality dropped dramatically.
I ordered a birthday cake for my mom's 80th birthday last week. I picked up from the store on 9/13/2024. The background of the cake looked pinkish. I questioned about the color. The store staff told me that was the food color of the gel. I paid $60 cash (cash ONLY like any other chinese stores in Flushing). My husband picked me up. I tilted the box a little bit when I sat down into the car. When I opened the box to show my husband the cake, I was shocked to see the cake got smooshed to the side of the box. The chinese characters on the second row disappeared. Obviously the cake was not kept cold enough. It melted! I returned to the store. The staff members did not care. To make it worse, after we ate the cake, everyone got diarrhea. The fruits on the top and in the filling were NOT fresh at all. NEVER buy any cake from this store again!
I usually go to Shengkee Bakery for birthday cakes with layers of white creme and fruit, but this place beats it! Not only is the cake fluffy, but it's prettier in terms of design and shape as well as tastier and bigger for a better deal!
I called in to order a small 6" panda cake here the day before a party and it came out perfectly...that is, until I accidentally dropped the cake box a few steps away from the party. Yup, of course I would. But even in its rather deformed state, the panda cake still looked oddly adorable and the birthday boy laughed it off saying that it made the cake even more memorable (what a good sport!!). The cake itself was delicious - I ordered a matcha green tea cake with a layer of pudding and a layer of fruits/jellies inside, and it had just the right amount of sweetness. The sponge cake was soft and moist, and the cream wasn't overpowering at all. It was a huge crowd pleaser and there wasn't a crumb of cake left by the end of it! As for the ordering process - it might be better if you know how to speak Mandarin, but English worked fine over the phone as well. You have the choice of 1) the size of the cake 2) the type of sponge cake - vanilla, chocolate, or green tea 3) the fillings - fruits, jellies, pudding, chestnut, and/or taro and 4) a custom message. All this customization plus some candles was a steal for my 6" panda cake, which came out at only $20. I'll definitely be back to order cake here again!!
I always preorder my cakes here! The regular vanilla cakes with pudding and lychee fruit as well as the strawberry icecream cakes are delicious! The price is also reasonable about $20 for a 6 inch regular cake and $35 for an 8 inch ice-cream cake. They also do custom cakes like a mahjong table or custom photo prints.

And then it snowballs into a serious conversation about this bakery that your friends have been getting birthday cakes from since forever, and this is the first time you've heard of their name. THIS BAKERY CUSTOMIZES CAKES WITH PUDDING FILLING. Delicious, glorious pudding. Kinda like the glorious pudding in your bubble tea. You can choose so many different things other than pudding too -- fruits, mangoes, more mangoes, etc. For the cake part, you can choose: green tea, vanilla, or chocolate. P.S. $25 for a small cake that feeds 4-6 people. Cash only. P.P.S. My God. How did I not know about this place until now?!
The baker at Sun Mary Bakery is very creative. Their cake designs are unique. Most of their cakes are priced reasonably. Check out their cake book for a cool design for your friend or family's next birthday cake! Tip: the store is on a side street from Main, 41st Rd, and is directly opposite the Q58 bus stop.
Decided to stop by this bakery to try out just one thing since I wanted a small snack and it did not disappoint. I've been seeing a couple of reviews about their taro paste cream puff and knew I had to try it because I love a slightly sweetened dessert and I also really like taro paste. I would definitely go back and get it again another day. The Taro paste is added to the center very generously and the whip cream is nice and light with only a hint of sweetness. On top of this, the bread was not overly heavy and had a nice crunchy top. The service was very quick like any other Chinese bakery. I will be back another day to try more of their items. read more

The photo speaks for itself. Do not buy cakes from here also you will not get refunded. Clearly they put no effort into making their cakes at all and ruin people's special days by giving them something that looks nothing like how they show on their displays. So disappointed. read more

I grabbed 2 small things from here that made this place worth eating: an egg tart and Hong Kong Milk Tea. The egg tart was soft and crispy, and the milk tea was strong and sweet. Everything I was looking for in a milk tea was there. Would highly recommend people try out their milk teas. read more

Not sure if the owners of the business changed but the bakery is actually called Sheng Mary. The customer service is excellent. Spoke over the phone to order a last minute customized cake and was surprised the cake would be ready in 3 1/2 hours. They have vanilla, green tea, chocolate cake layers with fillings of chestnut, taro, fruits, and pudding (similar to the kind in boba drinks). You may choose two different fillings without extra charge and its a three cake layers. Varies designs to choose from as well. Posted up the cake design options and updated prices as of 4/2022. The reason for the one star being off was the green tea cake needs more green tea flavor. Otherwise, definitely give it a try. They also have different pastries and cake rolls as well. read more

For years, before the Yelp Era (B.Y.E.), I have been coming here occasionally to get cute cakes. I would only come here if it was some odd time, say, really early in the morning at around 8 a.m., because parking in the area is nearly impossible. Forget attempting to walk on Main Street; good luck! It's probably not easy to tell if you aren't looking for it, but it appears that this place is Taiwanese owned. Taiwanese style pastries have been quite the rave for a while now, so I am glad that this place has survived for so long despite the competition. For $20 each, I got two beautiful six inch cakes. I bought two because we could not decide on what flavors we liked, so I got one for my cousin's birthday and one for my own. Yes, I was shamelessly buying my own cake for my own birthday, lol! (Rather depressing, actually). In terms of flavors, I strongly recommend green tea with Taro filling. The second cake I got was filled with pudding and walnut paste/jelly. It was interesting, but Taro with Green Tea kicked butt. The box of egg tarts were amazing! Get them if you get nothing else!! I still like Yeh Bakery's green tea flavor more, but for cuteness, Sun Mary can't be beat! read more

3.5/5 Update 4/22/17: The cakes here are creative, and you can choose from flavors such as green tea, vanilla, and chocolate, and fillings such as chestnut/taro/red bean/pudding/etc,. Sometimes the cakes here are overly creative, that it can get overwhelming. I recently purchased a custom cake(vanilla base w/chestnut and pudding layers) from here for my grandma's birthday. Unfortunately, this cake was only meant to be eaten in one day, since the bottom started growing mold the next few days. (+) -The vanilla sponge cake layer was tasty, and texture was moist and soft. -The cream was sort of heavy on the palate(too much butter, perhaps) -The chestnut+pudding layers were OKAY(did not really like that much) (-) -The fruit was not ripe! I had to chomp down on a kiwi, and the strawberries were bitter-tasting. ===== One of my favorite Chinese bakeries in Flushing! Pastries and other baked goods are freshly baked on the premises daily. Although I've never tried the cakes here, the breads do not and will not disappoint. By the end of the day, the highly sought after Honey Cheese Toast is almost always sold out by 3-4PM. Everything is well made and certainly no ingredients are skimped on. "Quality over quantity" is reflected throughout the baked goods here. Likes: 1. Very creative cakes! They have all kinds of animal cakes on request! 2. Cheap prices. An animal cake is about $22. Custom cakes are usually $28 depending on what's in it. Their cakes are an estimate of $18-$30. 3. Other than cakes, their other baked goods are also pretty delicious! 4. Excellent location. They're near the 7th train. 5. Great customer service. They're very attentive and friendly. Dislike: The quality of some baked goods have declined. For example, the walnut buns have less walnuts now and the price has increased from $1 - $1.25 Tips: You have to order 24-48 hours in advance for a custom cake of your preference. read more

This is one of the best and cheapest bakeries for cakes in Flushing. I fell in love with their mango cake years ago, it's covered with slices of fresh mango and filled with mango custard. *drools* then I found out they also make cute pig shaped cakes which are great for bday parties. Their 8 inch bday cake is only $22, how can you beat that price? especially when the cake tastes great, too! Oh, their manager/boss are very friendly and helpful. So go there! read more
Late minute birthday cake for when you thought someone else would be getting the cake, but that person totally thought someone else was going to get it? Sure! Sun Mary has saved many a birthday dinner with their adorably frosted cakes. There's always some variation of puffer fish, pig, or other small animal cake available for last minute walk-in orders. The taste and value is great too. We usually like to get the mango pudding, or taro flavored cake. Now, as for their regular bread offerings, I'd say it's quite solid, but their flavors are different from the typical Chinese bakery. If you buy nothing else, you MUST try the thick cheesy honey toast at least once. It's only available in the mornings and they run out pretty quickly. Best time to get it is around 10am, when it's freshly baked and the cheese is still oozing..... ahhh... I just gave away the best secret of Sun Mary. Everything else offered here is a new adventure, because it usually doesn't taste like what I imagine it would. But that's not necessarily a bad thing. *Service: I might be biased but the people here are the nicest in the world. On a recent morning, I picked up some breakfast and while it was getting wrapped to go, I open my wallet and realize I forgot to bring cash. :'( Entirely embarrassed, I tell the lady, "sorry but I don't have any cash on me," and push the bag back to her. Instead of brushing me off, she gives me my order and says, "You forgot? It's okay, just take it, and pay me back tomorrow :)" I'm like, :O "What!! Really? Thanks so much!!" Yes, I know I know, it's not like it was a million dollar order, but the fact that she was kind to me when it would have been just as easy to tell me to *$&% off just made my day. So... not that I'm telling you to go here without bringing money, but... uh.. just go and know that this is why small local businesses are just awesome. *For those cynics out there, how would she have known that I'd likely yelp about this! ;) read more

Type: Prosperity (dragon) cake Cake flavor: Green tea Fillings: Fresh fruit and pudding Serving size: 15-20 Price: $50 Honestly, this kind of cake is just good for the fun factor. It looks impressive as there aren't many bakeries that pipe a dragon on their cakes, but look elsewhere if you care about how it'll taste. I placed an order for the cake two weeks in advance, and the "fresh" fruit filling was really just canned fruit. The fruit on top of the cake was pretty old (no one ate the fruit), and the pudding was just in random parts of the green colored cake (no green tea flavor whatsoever). For the cake base, you can choose from vanilla, chocolate, or green tea. Available fillings (pick two): fresh fruit, pudding, chestnut, and taro. Maybe I picked the wrong combo??... All in all, the cake served its purpose in the looks department. Everyone was very amused, especially when my dad cut off the dragon's head with no hesitation. read more

I'm so Hungry.... I purchased one of my favorite buns for breakfast- the Pickled Mustard Bun (Green crunchy stuff). When I picked it up it felt light as a feather but I figured I'd give it a try. - The top of the bun where the slice is (and the filling is Normally spilling out) is closed indicating it had nothing inside. - Upon looking inside I would say there was a Total of 3 tsp of filling in the entire bun... on a small bed of Iceburg Lettuce - WHAT? Generally these types of buns have 1tbsp of filling per bite! What the heck is Alice talking about you say? Just take a look at the picture I posted. You'll see. I added 1 Star for the cute cake photos other yelper's posted. I just hope those aren't empty inside either~ This place is a rip-off. And I'm still hungry! read more

Best Chinese/Taiwanese Bakery !!! Get the 'green tea so' and 'phone lay so' Both flaky crust with a chewy center, flavored not too sweet but the perfect bite. The size is small; between a golfball and a handball size. Cost $2.50 -$3 but it is worth getting. I especially love the green tea ! I also get my cake from here too. I asked them to bake my cake earlier that day and by night time, I can still taste the freshness of it. Seriously, better than manna, taipan, and those bakery nearby. It is a little pricy but it is well worth it. read more

My family always get our birthday cakes here. They have cute default cakes. You can always customize what toppings and flavor you want. Some options are lychee jelly , taro and even green tea for the layers. read more
