This probably is the smallest of the Maxin bakeries, barely 10 feet wide, but is the closest to the Main St 7 train subway stop for convenience. They have all the baked goods that the bigger stores have, probably made at the one further down on Main St and delivered here in the morning. With the heavy foot traffic through here, I'm sure the baos here turnover rather quickly. I love to have a char siu bao for breakfast at the office in the mornings. A quick 30 sec in the microwave is all you need. Sometimes, I'll have a ham & egg or a 4 petal hot dog & bacon bun for variety. They had two kinds of hot dog buns -- (1) rolled the long way and (2) shaped in like a four-petal flower with four hot dog pieces. They except credit cards. However, there is a small fee. I paid $9.25 for five items, a bargain!!! The roast pork bun is extremely delicious, and full of delicious lean pork meat. I highly recommend this bakery. The location I went to was 4235 Main St. I can back the next day on Labor Day Monday before 7 am and again noticed two people going in. I bought two fresh baked pork buns for $4 total cash and ate one immediately. They were still warm from being freshly made. I gave the other to my Irish/English friend and she said it was wonderful. It is a pick up and go bakery selling Chinese sweet and savory buns along the shelves on the wall and milk teas ordered at the register. The buns ($1.55 each) are best in the morning, before noon. The bakery items are always fresh every time I come here and at 9 am they are warm. Towards 3 pm the selection is smaller and the buns are cold. This location has the best sweet topping bun (pineapple bun/bolo bao) around with three varieties of filling: red bean, coconut shred, and kaya cream. Talking purely about Maxin's pineapple (bolo) bread-- no fruits were harmed, this traditional Asian sweet bread just looks like a pineapple due to the cracks on the sugary skin covering the bread. The sugar skin layer is thin and more on the sticky than crumbly side but goes soooo well with the rest of the bread. There's no filling, but most of the bread beneath is slightly sweet (sans a few scant bites that tasted more like a dinner roll, but overall derrish). I think the best way to keep them fresh is to freeze them ASAP and then thaw them out when you want to eat them. Baking/warming them up changes their texture or makes them on the too-soft side. They're big enough for a light meal or a carb-loading snack. It's sweet, satisfying, and makes your tastebuds smile. I've had a loooot of different versions of this bread back at home, and this humble bakery's version is probably my favorite! The rest of their breads look a bit dated but who knows... might be as yummy as their bolo! For those who get appreciate the comparison between the two main Chinatowns, Maxin Cafe franchise is the Flushing version of Manna House/Fay Da in Manhattan. With the four stores situated within 10-15 blocks of each other, even Starbucks has nothing on Maxin. Of the four Maxin Cafe locations in Queens, the one on 40-06 Main is the smallest, no-frills bakery within a ten-block radius. It is perfectly located right off the stairway from the subway station next to Popeye's. Competing against the likes of Vanilla Cafe, Tai Pan, and Yi Mei Fung, Maxin stands out as the one bakery with the most reasonably priced baked goods and tea/coffee drinks along with a solid selection of buns including pineapple, cocktail, red bean, and roast pork. While the other bakeries are more focused on specialty baked goods, Maxin's selection is about the basic Chinese baked goods. The selection is actually even more impressive given the small space at this location. Lastly, if the banner outside doesn't already beat you over the head with the deal, bubble tea drinks are BOGO free until 9pm! read more

I took a chance to try their baked goods and I'm not disappointed. I wanted to find another bakery, other than Fay-Da and the New flushing bakery. I tried their coconut bun and wives' bread. Both delicious! I decided on these two since there weren't a lot left. The coconut bun wasn't too sweet and it's better when it's heated up. The wives' bread had a flaky consistency, had a red bean filling and was topped off with white sesame seeds. I've returned within the same week to buy the same things, but also decided to try their Chinese sausage bun (recommendation from the other yelpers) and red bean bun. I enjoyed the Chinese sausage bun, it's definitely a lot better when it's hot along with some sriracha. The red bean bun was bread-like with a red bean ribbon running through the bread. It was topped with almonds. The bun was not overly sweet and was quite enjoyable. I'd definitely continue to come back here for their baked goods and steamed buns. Having perused several of the popular bakeries in the area, I would agree that Maxin is probably one of the better options to get the most bang for your buck. It has all of your classic Chinese bakery buns at reasonable prices, although you can definitely get a better deal at Chinese bakeries in Brooklyn. Just sayin'. My awesome friend got me a walnut cookie and I really enjoyed it. But then again, it's something that's virtually impossible to mess up haha. If you're looking for something fancier, I would recommend checking out Iris Tea and Bakery instead. But for your run of the mill Chinese bakery buns/baked goods, Maxin is a solid option. read more

They have a summer promotion with 50% drinks, but its only limited to about four drinks...basically two... aka bubble milk tea or rainbow jelly milk tea. When you ask for it, sometimes, they say they dont have it maybe because 1) they dont understand you, or 2) dont want to give it to you because they are just advertising for more customers to buy things other than the "cheap" drinks promo. Anyways, if you ask for it and happen to get it, its a banging price of $1.40!!!!! Its great because they use REAL MILK TEA, not the powder ones at places like quicklys/kungfu/chai time!!!! My fave, the sugar-almond braid was not sugared enough compared to the ones they make over at the Roosevelt Ave. branch (where I'm a regular), but the "mismatch" (a.k.a half coffee half milk tea) was fantastic. This was my second stop in my hunt for Mooncake last week. From what I recall. The Lotus Moon Cake without any Yolks is $18 a box. The ones with One or Two Yolks are $22 or $24 or $28 a box. They also carried little ones and single serve normal sized one for like $4-5 each. That was what drew me into the place. There was this quite lady outside displaying Moonsakes and helping me select. There's no seating but everything looks bright and clean with a so so limited selection of pastries. It's quite close to the subway station.
