This is one of the busy cafes in Elmhurst that has the most variety of items. They offer things such as cakes, Chinese breads, mochi donuts and more. I decided to try their Coconut Pandan cake which was enjoyable except for the jelly they had in the middle. The cake itself was pretty moist and the cream had a nice Pandan flavor. The Portuguese egg tart is what you would expect from one of these bakery's, very basic but it was nice and flaky. The milk tea was also okay, we asked for less sugar so it was not too sweet. We also got the sesame mochi to go and this was delicious! Definitely the best thing I bought from this bakery. The sesame paste was nice and strong but not too gritty and the mochi was super soft. I was here on a Friday mid-morning. There were a tray of buns and the crust as well as the bun was hard. Had to search for softer buns. There was a tray of Tee-Doy decided not to buy any of them because they were all hard. Got 2 of the fish sandwiches and 2 of the chicken sandwiches. The prices for both sandwiches and bun have jumped up since January. I stopped here to get items for family and relatives/friends. Not impressed with their chicken sandwiches for they were hard and there is tendon in one other chicken sandwich has area that was not edible. The quality definitely not what it use to be here. Just like the one in Flushing, this place is serving the neighborhood some unique rotating items as well as an array of more proper dessert items behind the display case, so it's a twist on your classic Chinese bakery items. They will have a few classics like pineapple bun but a lot of their offerings are newer/modern such as black sesame pastries, mexican bun, japanese souffle minipancakes, etc. I like coming here to see what new items they have as they change relatively frequently and they're especially good to come for Chinese New Year as last year I was able to get some longevity peach buns and some lunar new year themed cakes. They also had white rabbit cake and other interesting things. It's a small place, and lies right next to the rainbow dim sum spot which is also good, so go there for lunch and come here for dessert! read more

I'm a regular at several other Rainbow Bakery locations but I was in the Elmhurst area today and was craving shrimp rice roll (my go-to order at the RB near me). This is my first time at the Double RB. This location so far is the only one I've personally been to with seating available AND accepts credit card/Apple Pay... already off to an excellent start. Inside, there are rows of different bread selections and they offer hot dim sum as well as made-to-order steamed rice rolls. I decided to try one thing from each menu (except the cakes). From the breads/pastries displays, I grabbed a cocktail bun (雞尾包). At the counter, I ordered an iced coffee milk tea (凍鴛鴦) from the drinks menu, a siu mai (燒賣) from the dim sum menu, and fresh shrimp rice roll (蝦腸) from the rice roll menu (helpful hint: there's also a dried shrimp rice roll on the menu which tastes drastically different (iykyk) so if you're getting shrimp, it's best to clarify which one you want). One thing I love about RB is the fact that they charge pretty fair prices for the selection they offer. For about $5, my rice roll is freshly made-to-order and comes with 6 pieces of shrimp. The taste of the shrimp roll was not bad but wasn't exactly as I had hoped (because as I've said, it's my go-to at the other locations) so I guess it's not very consistent amongst the different locations. The texture of the rice roll itself is great, up to par, not too chewy, and absorbs the soy sauce just right. It's the shrimp that tasted a little off (you can tell the shrimp were also tossed in a little late because otherwise, it would've been encased by the rice roll or at least sticking to it). The cocktail bun that I had saved for a later time was nothing to write home about; a little on the sweeter side (it's normally both sweet and savory) and the dough is quite dense. My favorites of this visit would definitely be the siu mai and the iced drink I got. The siu mai lacked shrimp but the pork filling was very flavorful, juicy, and had a nice chew to it - I sometimes make siu mai from scratch at home so it's rare that I find one that matches the way mine tastes, I only wish they would put some shrimp in there (well, maybe not from today's batch). The iced coffee milk tea was the perfect ratio for me (the recipe is supposed to be 50/50 but I prefer mine to be closer to 40/60 (coffee:milk tea) because even though it's less caffeine, the coffee wouldn't be overpowering the smooth taste of milk tea). I recommend giving this bakery a try if you're in the area and looking for a cheap breakfast or in my case, both my first meal and a midday pick-me-up to get me through the rest of the day. The staff is friendly and there's seating (limited). All the tables were packed when I was there but I managed to get one within 3-5 minutes of waiting. I (very regrettably) did not drive today so it was nice to be enjoying a quick, hot meal indoors away from the freezing cold temperatures. read more

Elmhurst has several Chinese bakeries but this one on Broadway is my go to. The variety and fresh out of the oven taste from every pastry I've had, no matter the hour, makes this a reliable visit. Be warned that your favorite may sell out fast though! They have a wonderful custard bun with a swirl top, a rectangular taro bun, and generally distinguish their buns more so than FayDa or Tai Pan, when a displaced brown bun can surprise you with a completely different filling when you get home. They have the tasty fish sandwiches for under $4. There are limited dim sum items but dim sum nonetheless. Service is hit or miss but generally efficient. Since they expanded the space it feels more open and is pretty fresh and clean. I've never hung out in there but there are a few tables in the right, where the separate dim sum and drinks shop used to be. This is a great stop for quick and tasty eats. read more

I've never actually been to this bakery before since my mom usually tells me to go to FD for a particular pastry. Rainbow actually has a great variety of buns and Pastries. My parents don't care for it but I think it's a better selection and it's cheaper too. Reg egg tarts are $1.75, Portuguese $1.90, lava cheese $3.25. I didn't care for the lava cheese..but the Portuguese, although not the best I had, was very smooth and creamy. Will definitely come back and try their pastries. read more

The customer service was terrible. I went to request a cake and the lady who I asked ignored me when I was asking her for help then. Then she roles her eyes and comes back I asked and she told me to scan the QR code but it was just a menu. So I was confused and asked an other worker the lady said the guy who takes the request leaves at 4:00pm. So I looked at maps and called their number and I explained what I wanted and the lady who was actually nice said order in the store then hung up mid way into me talking. so I decided to tell my bf if he can go figure out how much my cake would cost he asked and the lady said there's no one who does costume cake there at all even though the lady who was actually nice told me he leaves before 4:00pm and my aunt has order her before now I'm just lost. I have always loved buying at this bakery and buying cake or bread. I don't know if it's under new management or what's going on. The last time I went I wanted to make an order for a cake. I waited for some people to pay first. I knew they saw me and expected the workers to notice me standing there and help me. Two of the ladies just acted like I wasn't there and ignored me. I had to go up to one of the ladies and say I want to make an order. I showed her from a picture they have there for a kids Pokemon cake and she said with an attitude wait 15 minutes. I waited. I ordered some donuts with a different lady who saw me there feeling awkward there meanwhile since I was there with my son. I wish I had gotten her name. There is only one nice non racist lady out of like the 4 workers who were there that day. I paid 70$ for the cake and expected it to be good like the previous cakes I've ordered or bought. Double Rainbow Bakery offers a lot of great pastries. I love how big the store is, compared to its other location. The service is usually swift, as this bakery is buuusy. It has a lot of food traffic. There's always a line, but it goes by fast. The ambiance is casual, and they are conscious of restocking throughout the day. Personally, if I'm around the area, I always score with the ever demanding dinner butter buns. So fresh, light and filling. Other favorites would be the hot dog buns, hot soy milk, pork buns and egg tarts. I work in the area and have been going to this place for so long. I always noticed that there customer service is not the best when it comes to customer that are not Chinese. I am a Latina ( people always confuse me for middle eastern 90% of the time) and enjoy having a peaceful rising. Therefore, always pay with exact change to make minimal interaction with the women at the bakery. I normally order a regular coffee ($1.35). Today, I paid with the change in the picture attached. I asked for a regular coffee cream and sugar. The women made the coffee, I gave her the change in her palm. She flipped through the change, took the rusty quarter out and flicked it at the table. I took the quarter and tried to explained that it was given at the laundromat. Before I finished my sentence, she threw all the change she had in her palm at the counter and snatched the coffee off the counter (as if I was going to steal it). The whole interaction was so belittling and not worth being late to work. Yes, the quarter is rusty (I got the change back from the laundromat) but totally not worth the tone level, service and mannerism. Customers from other ethnicities are bullied and treat with suspicion.They create a battle field when there is none. Protect your energy and stay away from this place !!! read more

Pretty much identical to Rainbow Bakery of Woodside. Of the few Asian bakeries along Broadway in Elmhurst, this is definitely the best one. I love their pineapple bun. They come out nice and warm early in the morning. The "pineapple" top is really delicate and had a really nice mild sweetness and crispiness. The pastry itself has a certain finesse that is missing in many other pineapple buns around the area. Their steamed buns are also really good and only $1 each. My favorite is the chicken bun. The filling is plentiful and flavorful. I've also had their various other pastries that have been very good. The curry pie is the only item that hasn't been a winner for me. The curry flavor was weak and the pastry crust was not as crispy as I was hoping. It's the one thing I don't think I'd get again here. I have to give this bakery ONE star (since I can't give no stars). I was in Queens having lunch with a friend and as I was walking to the subway, I passed by this bakery and noticed their cakes. I was in a hurry so I took down their phone number to call in about their cake prices. Keeping in mind that this is a Chinese bakery and customer service is rarely a concern.. my interaction with the employee was so horrible that I must write a review. So here is what happened, I called to inquire prices on their 3 tier cakes. The lady told me to come in to look at the cake instead. I asked, "Can you just give me an estimated price over the phone?" She responded rudely "Come in to look at the cake because I don't know what you want." I told her what I wanted and asked for an estimate but she kept interrupting me. Then I hear a click... she hangs up on me... is it really that difficult? So I called another Chinese bakery to ask the same questions and they were more than happy to provide me with an answer. I Love this place. I live in the apartment building right next to them and cannot do without my morning coffee and almond pastry. The ladies that work here smile and greet their customers. One staff in particular, AMY, is very friendly and even ask how your day is going. I've compared their coffee with the nearby bakeries and nothing comes close. They also serve dimsum and ice cream. I enjoyed my latest visit. I had purchased a small hot tea with milk. It was sweet and delicious, just as I expected. When I visited around 4 pm on a Sunday, they had a short line, and two ladies working behind the counter. The cashier was friendly and helpful to me. I also saw that there were some stools to sit on, but I was in a rush so I sipped my beverage slowly as I walked out. I ended up eyeing the pastries, but not getting any of them. I avoid this place because the girls are SO RUDE. They roll their eyes when I ask them questions about what is in the pastries and they keep asking "That's it", when I keep wanting to buy more. There are also no signs for price or ingredients, hence the questions. I did have a nice experience with one of the new girls. I've been coming to this bakery for about 10 years. I only go there about 2-3 times a year, because my parents love their pastries and force me to buy tons of it every time I go to visit them in FL. Every time I go there, I spend about $40-60 and I always leave very angry; like they're doing me a favor by selling me the pastries!! But back to the FOOD...everything there is amazing! The cakes are very light and cheap. All of their food is very fresh, they bake it on site. Their coffee and bubble tea are one of the best. Their dim sum is also pretty decent. I tend to stop by in the morning because it's close to the train station. The workers might be a little rushed and not very friendly but that's because they're trying to get you in and out. There's usually a line but the wait isn't too long. I enjoy their iced coffee and iced milk tea. It's nothing extraordinary but it's better than most Chinese bakeries I've been too.
