Yi Mei Bakery is one of those discoveries, courtesy of my mom's impeccable taste in cheap eats. Whenever we're in the neighborhood, it's a must-visit for a quick and tasty meal. Their hot milk tea is a cozy, comforting drink that warms the soul. Fay Da's milk tea may still hold the title for my favorite, but Yi Mei's version is a very close contender. The sponge cake? A pleasant surprise. Despite some folks claiming the bread isn't fresh, I've never really had a negative experience with them. But then again, I only get the sponge cake and I can't differentiate fresh vs not fresh between them (I'll just assume that if it's NOT fresh, I would have been able to tell). I think Yi Mei has been in Elmhurst for over forty years. Props to businesses surviving in NYC. I haven't visited much because my mom preferred other neighborhood bakeries, however, I like to taste test and support bakeries that make their own mooncakes! Since Lung Moon in Chinatown closed I was excited to see the rows of mini moon cakes here. I got a little plain lotus paste one to try ($2.50). It was fresh and the texture was soft. Bad service I don't recommend this place. I bought $3.75 items and give them $20 bill the lady returned me only $1.25 . I tell her that I give her $20 and she start arguing that I give her $5 . This particular chain is Taiwanese and also has a location in Flushing. Have to this location about a dozen times over the years, generally speaking the quality of buns and pastries are better than most other Chinese bakeries in the area. The price is slightly higher than other places to reflect this too. I like how the flavor of the filling is authentic but isn't as sweet as some other places. The storefront is small and basic--one small room with buns and pastries lined up on the shelves with prices displayed. Cakes (full and sliced) a visible in glass display cases on either side of the register. My favorite Chinese bakery in Elmhurst. I like my savory foods and I think the best part of going to the Chinese bakery is to be able to buy buns (bao) that have high value. These buns can be eaten for breakfast or brunch style. Usually they sell out buns quickly if there is a rush in the morning. I love my hot dog buns and they do it justice. Bread is soft, moist, and has the right sweetness. It comes in a cheesy form too and they make it great. The chicken sandwiches are much better than others I've tried. They use actual chicken thighs and are meaty. Ham and egg are great. I love how they use Mayo in it. White bread is definitely the best. Has the best color on the outside and is always soft and fluffy. Sweetness and airy. I rather go with this than almost any bread you can buy in the supermarket. Makes great BLTs. This is a Taiwanese Bakery and filled with rows of buns. My favorite is the croissant which is buttery and goes nicely with a cup of coffee. The sweet buns are popular like the red bean buns, and the coconut ones. Roast Pork Buns are different than the one's that I am accustomed to. What's up with the filling peeps? Most of the fresh baked items made are by the window and displayed on trays. I steer clearly away from the stuff on the counter. The egg custard did not look so great, and I definitely not get the Italian cookies- stick with Italian Bakeries for this. Their sweet raisin bread, sweet cheese bread and even plain white bread are fantastic!! If you've never tried Chinese white bread, give it a whirl----it is denser than the white Wonder bread I was used to from childhood. It makes fantastic French Toast! They also sell a little six pack of rolls that have a pocket of butter in the center that are incredible. Very inexpensive, go and try some of the PRE packaged treats...you can try one coconut roll or one hot dog bread. . I know that a lot of Yelpers have rated them very poorly based on their cakes, so please keep in mind that my review is based totally on their breads which are consistently fresh and even warm out of the oven. Not as terrible as the other review. First they got an A from our dept of health. Does that mean that they are actually clean? You make that decision. Also, they have a good enough selection for the size of the store. The breads were fresh and everything is bought inside plastic. It is a standard bakery and they don't cost as expensive as the fay dat counterpart by a difference of ten to twenty cents. I bought a big loaves of white rectangle bread recently, only to find out that the bread is not fresh. I called, and the owner answered the phone. I told him that his bread is not fresh and must have been on the counter couple of days. He admitted that his bread is not made fresh everyday and he doesn't understand why I am complaining. It is disgusting tasting the white bread that wasn't fresh. They used to be soft and fresh, before the pandemic. A big disappointment! Yi Mei has at least two locations in NYC, and the erstwhile pink and purple neon lighting on the front window of the Flushing branch (http://www.yelp.com/biz/yee-mei-fong-taiwan-bakery-flushing-2) was a recurring scene in my childhood. The quality of their breads and buns has dropped to 0, though. Now I can confirm that BOTH Yi Mei's Flushing and Elmhurst branches are terrible! Buy 2 get 1 free after 7pm. The peanut bun was extremely stale for only having sat out for a day (supposedly). I poked (gently!) at all of them and they were all dense and hardened. The roast pork buns are legitimately awful across both locations, the worst I've ever had. There's barely any filling, and what filling there is is horribly salty and looks to be just onions and food coloring. I don't know where they bake their buns, but that sort of consistency means it's coming from a factory off-site. All the buns are sealed in plastic instead of tucked in a wax envelope like many other bakeries. It's clear they aren't invested in having fresh products. I love my Chinese bakeries and in all my many years on this earth, this is one of the worst I've ever tried. There are so many good eats and other options around for snacks! I've become a regular with ordering cakes for different family events (engagement parties to birthday parties). The TARO vanilla cake is DELICIOUS!!! Right amount of sweetness on the cream and soft taro between the two layers of spongy light vanilla cake. Honestly the creme actually taste like what creme should be! Milky, right texture, and very rich in flavor and I'm not exaggerating. I've tasted cakes from Chinatown to flushing to 8ave Brooklyn to all over Elmhurst. This creme can matched up with Yeh's bakery (my favorite green tea cake spot). Majority of Chinese cakes has a a creme that you can tell it's fake off the bat...like artificial flavoring!! The creme is the first priority of cake, if that's messed up then The whole cake is garbage, because the creme is usually incorporated into the layers. Next the vanilla layer has to have the vanilla, eggy, milky taste. This place definitely has both. I would be back to ordering more! They also take customized orders!! And the designs are simple and neat!! And price range from 20s for 8" cake!! A must try!! PS: please call the day before to request the taro cake. I did a last minute request and had to substitute for a fruit vanilla cake. So for special orders and unique toppings I would advise to call a day in advance. This is the first time I tried this place. I usually go to a chinese bakery near my place. Went here today and ordered a Mixed fruit cake (for my daughter), some breads and a sponge cake roll. When I got home I realized they gave me the wrong cake. Instead of the mixed fruit cake, they gave me their cheese cake with three fruits on top. My daughter tasted the cake and was grossed out. I took and bite and realized the entire cake was bad. It tasted like roquefort cheese that sat int eh sun for two days or vomit after you vomit, ironically, that is what I did afterwards. When I examined the cake more closely, it had black mold on the bottom. Since my daughter took a bite already and would not vomit or spit it out, I have to watch her tonight and tomorrow for food poisoning. Needless to say, I threw EVERYTHING I got here away. This place is disgusting and I am usually a huge fan of chinese bakery shops. They may get an A for inspection but their place was a mess and their pastries are clearly not fresh unless you count fresh mold in that category. I would give this place a zero if it was possible. I like the mini pineapple buns here. They come 3 to a pack and are only 60¢. The fullsize pineapple buns are also 60¢. The iced coffee is delicious too and super sweet. I think that's about $1.50. I recently discovered this place and have been returning to get their raisin milk cream bread. These things are absurdly sweet! It's strange because I generally don't crave super sweet things--or dessert in general. However, it's getting to a point where I can't walk by this place without stopping in for a piece of bread. Since a few months ago this place is under new management and it's great. I have no issues with their pastries, and they're quite good. I ate pretty much all kinds, bread, cake, etc. Even when I brought home pastries and stored them for a few days, they were still okay, but don't try prolonging pastries like taro or any ones that have filling. They do have a warning sign alerting customers about freshness because people are dumb... Very rarely or at all there are stale pastries. The person who wrote that review in April probably didn't like any of the pastries or doesn't like any sort of asian pastries in general(and that's fine, we all have different tastes). I don't get why people leave bad reviews for these places like bakeries, cheap takeout, etc, there is a certain level of quality, it's cheap food? What do you expect? I've eaten at so many cheap chinese/asian takeout restaurants, bakeries in flushing, bronx, manhat, elmhurst you name it, and the quality is well, the quality people expect it to be. But I could be wrong and maybe it was a bad pastry day. Also, because this place has a less well rep than the other bakery down broadway, I am quite certain less people frequent it during the after 7pm sale. Makes no sense when the bakery near Broadway has so many customers, yet this one runs the same deal and has tons of pastries left. They both offer similar deals, so if you're looking to stock up, just walk a few min north, can't beat their 3 for $2 deal imo. I really don't like giving places bad reviews. But when you own a bakery, you don't sell stale goods if you want to stay in business. I purchased a cake here several years ago and it was good... maybe it was a different owner. Anyway, I very recently purchased two small single chocolate cake deserts to have with my Dunkin Donuts coffee. When I got back to where I was going I bit into it and the icing was way too sweet. Then, the chocolate cake itself was dry like cardboard. My friend tried it and agreed it was stale. I walked back and asked if I could exchange the other desert because it was dry. Immediately the counter lady said "no change" and "don't worry, it was made fresh this morning"... How could a piece of cake go stale and dry like cardboard in 9 hours? Yi-Mei's has been around for quite some time now in Elmhurst, Queens. It use to be owned and operated by Taiwanese people. I'm not too sure if Taiwanese people still run it but back in the day, this bakery would easily get 4-5 stars. Their bread smelled amazing. Rich, buttery, and tasteful. Today, it's so-so. I would say, they still have the best buns and bao's on Broadway in Queens but it's nothing compared to the bao's from Taiwan. Verdict - Looking for cheap breakfast? Compared to the branch in Flushing, the Elmhurst head store is cramped and offers limited variety of buns. Moreover, the buns, tarts, etc. do not seem fresh. The bread seem to be freshly baked, but then they are placed on the uncovered carts before being packaged. The door to the bakery is left open. I question how sanitary everything is. Everything tastes okay here. My favorites are the onion hot dog and the chicken roll, they are all $1 each. The green tea roll used to be so good but they started putting more food coloring because the color changed from bright grass green to darker green tea and it tasted bitter too. Now let's move on to why I gave them one star: 1. Owner is borderline rude. I'm sure she didn't mean to be rude but she does have a "It's my store so if you don't like it, feel free to leave" attitude. Woman, a smile goes a long way and when you have customers entering your store, you better be nice instead of ignoring them. 2. I understand that this is not a coffee shop and service is non-existent BUT when there's a line of customers, you and your staff should at least be courteous enough to drop everything you are doing to help speed up the check out process. I always come in the AM before going to work and the fact that there's only one cashier taking coffee orders and ringin the bills while two others aren't helping bugs me. It's the AM, we are all on the way to work, you need to work fast!!! 3. This is the most disturbing part even more than the fact that they added food coloring in their green tea roll cake: their sanitary grade. As of this writing they only got a C from the Dept of Health. How bad is a C? I don't know. BUT about a month or so ago they got completely SHUT DOWN for a week for sanitary (or pest?) issue! And even after that, they still haven't learned their lesson and could only pass a C grade?! Worse, they try to conceal the C grade sign by moving it to the top corner of their door where it's less visible to people. 4. They do NOT make their bread in-house. When I was in the neighborhood for work I would stop by to pick up dessert for a dinner party or to share with family since authentic Chinese pastries aren't easily found on the upper east side of Manhattan. Yi Mei has one of the best loaves of bread (amongst Chinese bakeries here in NYC). When really fresh, you can eat it plain and be very happy. Hint: Buy a big loaf and keep one half in freezer. Yi Mei also has other cakes and pastries for sale. Personally, I'm not a fan of the (Taiwanese) style of "pineapple" buns (bo-lo baos) but the other stuff here is good. Get the bread! read more
