One family member likes to visit 88 Bakery & Cafe practically everyday or every other day. After day of shopping or walking around the neighborhood, we make a pit stop here to cool our jets and refuel. What is good about 88 Bakery & Cafe is that there is an area where you can sit and enjoy a cup of coffee (I like their coffee) and I get the bun with corn with bits of ham swimming in mayo (white cream). It's cool to sit and watch customers come into the store like the neighborhood traffic guard taking a break after walking in the brutal heat to check his phone. The lady who makes a stop after a day of shopping and sits in a table full of strangers and have a conversation before she boards a bus back home. This is a neighborhood bakery and conveniently located not too far from subway station right next to Walgreens. Come early cause lots of items are sold out. There weren't any pastries that stood out to me when I visited so I just got the traditional roast pork bun and a small milk tea to go with it. This is one of those mom-and-pop Chinese bakeries in Elmhurst. This one happens to have seating but it is smaller than the Rainbow Bakery one block away. Most of the customers inside are elders. As one of the longest running bakery franchises in the NYC area, 88 Bakery & Cafe (金师傅饼屋) is one brimming with confidence with its self proclaimed "best bakery in town" after a year renovation that saw a newer awning and a nicely decked out interior. For Elmhurst (#1) standards, this more than does the job. For some folks, it's really just about perspective. If this 88 Bakery was somehow in the middle of LIC and Sunnyside, it would be a god send. In places like Flushing or places with a higher concentration of Chinese bakeries, it may be somewhere in the middle or get lost in the shuffle entirely. If one is going to play the Chinese bakery game, either come in super early when everything is fresh and the aroma is permeating throughout the interior. There will likely be lines but the counter ladies are good at getting through it. Or come in during the end of the hour and watch them auction off the goods for a third of the price. The buns, pies, and filled pastries are tasty and work great as morning snacks. Over time due to what feels like smaller and smaller items, I've become more of a beverage man than anything. I always recommended a nice, HK style milk tea (hot or cold). It isn't fancy, but it's consistent and greatly appreciated. It may just be easier to ignore the rules entirely and just arrive sometime in the late afternoon when things are generally slower. Inventory is going to be limited, sometimes the staff looks tired (which they are, considering how early they open), and the internet (or whatever connection they're on) tends to lag and drag. I came in looking to get a tea drink. I asked for the lemonade but was told that they don't have it. No drinks from the right-most menu. Ok, I thought, I'll choose something else. I decided upon a green apple smoothie. Nope, they don't have that either. Haha. Finally I got the lychee smoothie. It was only $3 so it was expected that it's not going to be real fruit. A very disappointing bakery. There isn't that big of a selection of breads as you'd find in a Fay Da, Taipan or any of the Chinese bakeries you'd see in Flushing. The breads were also very yellow and looked more unnatural in color. The egg tarts were the flakey crust type but they didn't seem to be baked well and connected with its shell. read more

This is the BEST bubble tea place I ever been to. They do charge extra for extra bubbles. One thing is that their staff is always dry and they look like they're unhappy to work there. Other than that THIS is the spot for bubble tea. It's the only thing I ever got from there though. read more

Like every other restaurant and food service business they are hurting right now due to the coronavirus. But that should not give them license to turn this into a price gouging opportunity. Coronavirus, yes this impacts revenue and business costs are piling up. But 88 has increased their prices and at the same time decreased their portions. That is classic double dipping for a 100% margin markup. The roast pork bun I bought was all bun, the filling was literally just a smearing of sauce. It is a disgrace to call it a roast pork bun. Instead just call it a roast pork flavored bun. If that wasn't enough NYC has banned plastic bags so I brought my own. As the cashier packed the buns and coffee into their little paper bags then finally into a large plastic bag, I stopped her, saying I will use my own bag. I also asked that she doesn't charge me the 5 cents bag charge. She said she has to because the charge is for the paper bags. I replied wait a second, the plastic bag ban has nothing to do with paper bags. Also why are you packing each bun into its own little paper bag? You are just trying to make money in an already confusing time along with the NYC plastic bag ban. They were never the greatest bakery but their location is convenient. But this is Elmhurst with Chinese bakeries on every block. I suggest skipping this rip off and going to Rainbow Bakery maybe its one block over and 10x better than 88. A very good Chinese bakery along Broadway that I'd recommend checking out. The buns are fresh, the crowds are frequent, so turnover is high. And for the most part, they're cheap. One of the local favorites are the Egg & Dried Pork Pastry ($1.00) drizzled with a sweet baked crust and sprinkled with sesame seeds. It's light, not greasy, crispy and the perfect start to the day. The Hot Dog Bun ($1.00) is another tasty treat that does not feel second thought. The hot dog is plump and the bread is golden and fresh. Yum! You may find some of the other handful of Chinese bakeries less crowded and possibly cheaper, but these are one of the freshest and on average, very satisfying. read more

This was the only option close to the subway way where I could sit and rest for a little bit, and get a cheap snack. I wish there were other options nearby. Maybe I just went during a bad time of day (late Sunday), because their selection of pastries weren't that great. They consolidated all the leftovers onto one tray, but there seemed to be a surplus of hot dog buns. I ended up getting a steamed white bun from the hot side. It wasn't roast pork, which I expected, but a patty of pork & scallions. It tasted fine and was Huge, for $1. But I expected more selection and quality (some of the buns didn't look so great) for a bakery in a busy section of Elmhurst, and right in front of a bus stop. There's high turnover in the seating section, but there are a lot of seniors that hang out there. I wish the decor was nicer- sleeker, less ramshackle. we ordered a cake here for my brother's birthday and they charged us for $25. And when we ordered it they said we didn't have to pay anything when we came to pick it up. A week later, today, we came to pick it up. The guy packaged the cake up all nicely and then when he handed me the cake he said we had to pay $5 extra. Excuse me? So I asked him why and the rest of the coworkers were looking for the cake book to check prices and they said the person calculated it wrong. Well it was their fault and they're telling me to pay. I didn't bring money cause I wasn't expecting to pay. And so I was saying that it was unfair that they were telling me to pay for their mistake. What kind of service is this? And I was speaking English and they didn't speak English and the girl next to her was just waving her hand to the girl saying no no no to just forget it. And she asked me if I still wanted the cake. Uh. It's my brother's birthday today. And we paid $25 for it. And they asked if we still wanted the cake? And the flavor was supposed to be green tea. It is not green tea -.- I don't think they should have made me pay when it was a mistake on their part. They even called us in the middle of the week to tell us the picture wouldn't fit and we asked to change it and that was it. They didn't tell us we had to pay extra or anything. Cake is pretty good too, typical sponge cake base. Although it's a bakery, I recommend this place as a good place to get bubble tea here as well. Although this is not a chain bakery, they do have some good stuff, particularly cake roll (with melon, vinilla, coca, and chocolate flavor to choose from) and cha siu bau (bbq pork bun). I was walking around here after my dinner. I found a few boba tea places, but there were lines, and I was too impatient. As I was about to leave, saw the boba tea offering at this bakery store. Didn't try any of the bakery, but they look pretty good. Noticed after dinner time, they had a specials on some of the day old bakeries that many people were buying. Anyway, I wanted some sort of boba tea. Their menu was basic, so I just got a passioni fruit with black tea and boba drink. I got the large one for $4.25 i think. Size wise, it was a good size as I'm still working on it as I'm writing this review. It's been about 2 hours, but I think i just had too much to eat earlier. The flavor was good as it's not watered down (many cheap boba places would water down their tea, which I hate). It's not very sweet, but just enough for flavor. The boba is chewy, but in a good way as it's not overcooked or undercooked. My only complaint is that they don't do the top seal that the true boba tea should have. They have this round top like they use at the 7-11 slushy drink. I'm not sure why it's the dome shaped round top for this, but I would like far better if it's the sealed plastic top that boba tea were originally made. read more

The coffee is always stale & the macarons taste old, the only reason I come to this bakery is strictly for the Steamed Chicken and Shiitake Mushroom Bun, it's the size of a Big Mac & packed with chicken, mushrooms & vegetables how can you go wrong. The actual bun is extremely soft, every bite is a explosion of flavors in your mouth, all this for under $1.50. Try to get here before 3pm, they always sell out of the chicken one. 88 Bakery is a small little Chinese owned bakery in Elmhurst. They make a variety of buns, cakes, and some sandwiches. Their bubble tea is okay but their coffee kinda stinks. Their coffee often leaves a nasty sour after taste in my mouth. Most of their buns are pretty good. The red roast pork buns are actually red here unlike some other Chinese bakeries where it comes brown looking. The hot dogs in their hot dog buns are too salty for my taste. Egg custards are pretty well made here. It's not too runny. Red Bean buns are also tasty and large too. The coconut with cream bun is my Uncle's favorite. If you like coconut shavings on your bun with cream, go for it. All of the buns here are soft and fluffy. After a 30 second microwave re-heat when you take them home, the buns (especially the red roast pork) taste delicious. Verdict - Everything is fairly priced. Nothing is expensive here and service is great. Elmhurst train station is just down the block. It's a good location on Broadway. I just wished they made a better cup of joe. read more
