EXCELLENT BAKERY! We purchased a cupcake, chocolate chip cookie, smores brownie, a cheesecake, and a carrot cake. We all LOVED everything! Everything was super fresh and moist! The best items were the carrot cake, the birthday cupcake, and the s'mores brownie. The s'mores brownie was probably the best out of all 3! The marshmallow in the middle was so fluffy and perfect! I never had anything like it before! The bottom brownie part was rich and fudge like! The fudge layer on top was so DELICIOUS! The actual cake part to the carrot cake was one of the best I ever had! I do prefer a more cream cheesy frosting, but the icing was still good! The cupcake was so moist, and the confetti cake was delicious! The only drawback is everything was really pricy especially the cakes in the cup. I felt everything was a few dollars overpriced, but it wouldn't stop me from coming back. I HIGHLY Recommend Cakes by Nerwan in Astoria! read more

Cakes by Nerwan is amazing! They made a custom cake for my husband's 50th birthday, and it was absolute perfection. He wanted a Shakespeare's Globe Theatre cake, and after I sent a few examples, they said they could do it -- and they nailed it. The design was spot on, and all of our Shakespeare friends instantly recognized it and thought it was incredible. It ended up being the perfect centerpiece and talking point for the whole party. And not only did it look amazing, it tasted just as good -- rich chocolate cake with the perfect buttercream frosting. Delicious from start to finish. Thank you, Cakes by Nerwan, for making his birthday so special! read more

So I'm actually mad at myself for this one. I saw a sign that Cakes By Nerwan was celebrating 5 years of banana pudding so obviously I had to try it. The space is cute but I didn't realize it was going to cost me almost $12 with tip for a tiny mason jar and that's my fault for not asking. Why I'm mad is it was fine. Magnolia pints, which gives you more, goes for $10. I think the price is a little steep here for what you get and I know I could personally make a comparable version. read more

My husband and I have always loved the cupcakes from Cakes by Nerwan, so for his birthday, I ordered a custom mini vanilla cake with raspberry compote. It was adorable, the perfect size and incredibly delicious! The team perfectly captured the flavor and look we hoped for. We're longtime fans of their raspberry cupcake, and this cake version was just as amazing. The raspberry compote is one of the best things we've ever tasted!!! So fresh and perfectly balanced. (Seriously, please sell it in jars!!!) You can really taste the quality in everything they make. Highly recommend this bakery for both special occasions and everyday treats! read more

Nice little shop tucked in the middle of a very busy area. Passion fruit cheesecake: The cheesecake was nice and creamy and the passion fruit was very tasty. I liked the two elements separately... for me, it didn't work well together. Pumpkin Tres Leches: Very cute presentation. Nice and creamy. Tasted like super sweet pumpkin pie. "Roasted Pistachio Tiramisu" I am using quotes on this one b/c I don't recall the exact description. Again... VERY creamy, however, I wouldn't have called it a tiramisu if they didn't tell me what it was. My kids tried it before me and their first reaction was: "It tastes like perfume!" Upon closer inspection, there were a couple of flower petals on top. I appreciate their creativity, but, not for me. I am sure there are people who'd love this. read more

I tried to call but was told to order online. I tried to upload photos from yelp but it says the file is too big... this isn't very efficient. All I want to do is order a cake and online message says my picture file is too big and it won't submit my order, however there is no way to now remove the picture!!!! So frustrating!!!! I order cakes monthly and this is the least user friendly yet. Disappointing... to say the least. EDIT: After Nerwan reached out, still missing the point. I am allowed to share my experience on YELP whether that be negative or positive, it's my experience. To build on the issue- I want to order a cake, not submit an inquiry form and wait for someone to reach back out to me, then why not just help me on the phone? I absolutely have never ordered cake here before and will never come here again. Principal of the matter is- you serve a county that has the HIGHEST population of SENIORS and yet you tell people to submit an inquiry online, not even an order. No cake prices listed or flavors when you do try to order... I order cakes in one shot- no back and forth- simple pick a cake, what do you want on it, these are the prices, your cake will be ready-check out-all in one time. In person, online, or on the phone. Never had a place turn me down. Martha's the busiest bakery in Astoria- had time to discuss cakes with me and ordered all in one conversation. Once in person and once on the phone- no issues. I am all for shopping local and helping small businesses, but I also look for efficiency and convenience. Customer service isn't everyone's strong suit. read more

We were pleasantly surprised by this little bakery off 31st st on 23rd Avenue. I had heard and read mixed reviews about their cakes and pastries. As the Thanksgiving holidays were upon us, we ordered a ThanksGiving cookie gift box, brownies, four buttercream cupcakes, and a five-inch velvet cake with sprinkles. I am told the cake was a great success, as it was a birthday cake; as I wanted to test their indoor dining standards, we ordered two cups of tea and ate dined on two of the cupcakes. The total price came to $101, including surcharges and tips. That seemed a little expensive, in my opinion. They charged $2.99 as a credit card fee! The cake shop is small, with samples of pastries and sweets around the store. You will also notice a giant teddy bear in front of the seating and a picture using the theme of the sweet dream from The Eurythmics. Al.l-in-all an enjoyable experience and better than I expected! read more

I guess I should thank the MTA for closing Astoria Boulevard station, because if I did not start using Ditmars Blvd station as a substitute, I wouldn't have discovered Cakes by Nerwan! The cupcakes are great. There are usually 6-8 different kinds of cupcakes you can choose from, and I like how options are small enough to not get confused or overwhelmed. My go-to is birthday cake cupcake, but I recently tried the Apple Pie cupcake and I just cannot get enough of it. The cinnamon butter cream is top notch and I enjoyed having a little bit of sautéed apples inside the cupcake. The store is often open late, and sometimes I can't help myself wander in to grab a cupcake on the way home at night. read more

Stopped by on a Friday evening after passing by on the block. No one else inside and still plenty of items behind the counter to choose from. Wasn't trying to go overboard, so settled on two cupcakes - the Samoa and Chocolate Birthday ($9.57 total with tax). Items are placed in a sturdy to-go container so the icing on top does not get ruined. Trying the Samoa cupcake - the cake base is good - light and fluffy with a sweet (coffee?) interior. Unfortunately the icing is not very good; stale tasting and with an oily texture that does not go well with the cake on top. Similar situation with with Chocolate Birthday, good filling and cake, not so much the icing. Service is quick as no one else was inside, and they do have options here. Probably would not get the cupcakes next time. read more

Ordered an Oreo buttercream cupcake. Total came out to $4.22. The inside of the store is super cute which was what drew me into the store in the first place. The actual cupcake is pretty small. I have passed by this place before but didn't actually get to try it until now! Cakes by Nerwan is a fairly new dessert spot in Astoria. They sell cupcakes, cake jars, flower pots, brownies, and more! I was in the area with my sister who is vegan and she was excited that they have vegan desserts here. We went with the Vegan Oreo Cheesecake Jar (~$8). For a non-vegan like myself, I was surprised with how creamy it was. I liked the Oreo bits being soft and the cheesecake part being sweet and creamy. There was a good portion of both Oreo bits and cheesecake. It was enough to get a bit of both in each bite! I must say for one cake jar, it is pretty expensive. It seems like a one-time try for me. If I'm back in the area, I'd consider trying their other desserts, but I would skip the cake jars next time. read more

I just randomly happened to see this place when I had intended to stop by a donut place a couple doors down. First off, they have a short cute, very Instagrammable sign! Secondly, their Nutella cupcake is one of the best chocolate cupcakes I've ever had (and I've had a lot, believe me). It was incredibly light and moist, and it wasn't overwhelmingly chocolately. The icing was light and fluffy and the little bit of Nutella inside the cupcake was an absolutely delightful surprise. I loved this place so much, i went back the next day and grabbed 6 more. The icing is a lighter, fluffier icing, which is a nice change from the heavy, thick, super incredibly sugary icing. read more

Amazing cake and quality, and amazing sweet staff. I've been doing my cakes with Nerwan for a very long time and she delivers every single time. Birthdays, gender reveals, baby showers, she's always been super attentive to detail no matter the occasion. My family, who are super critical Hispanics LOL, rave about Nerwan's cakes too so that's how you know it's AMAZING. My usual go to is vanilla sponge with the white chocolate raspberry filling, it's to die for!! Oh and sometimes I just come to get my fave, Oreo cheesecake cupcakes, because it's been a long day. Disappointing and rude! Don't waste your time, run the other way! I did a ton of research leading up to my baby girl's 1st birthday, including communicating with 2 other custom bakers in the city. I was so excited for months leading up to her big day, following the shop on IG and even being willing to drive out to Queens to pick up the cake. When I initiated contact, sending photos of what I wanted, all I received were curt one-line e-mails, with no clarity at all on what the design would be (for example, I was told I couldn't put a 2D elephant on buttercream on the side...how am I supposed to know that, I'm not the one who's a baker!) The final straw was being told I they wouldn't give me a description or sketch of what the cake would look like. If I'm spending $500+ dollars for a cake for my daughter's big day, minimally I want to know what it's going to look like and most certainly don't need the attitude. Save yourself the grief and contact LikeButter by Satoko who is a true professional; courteous, detail-oriented and an amazing baker in the city! read more

I notice Cakes by Nerwan walking to the train station at Astoria. It's pretty new as I've never seen it before and have been around the neighborhood for years. I was just craving something sweet and sugary and decided to go in and try it. The staff was really friendly and welcoming. She had a continuous smile while helping me and was very kind. It was half a dozen for 23$ including tax and a dozen for a little less than $40 I believe. It was a little more expensive than I expected. I usually get my hard to beat, amazing cupcakes from Brooklyn Cupcakes, which is $15. I got a half a dozen, and my favorite was Nutella and chocolate chip. I was a little disappointed by the taste. The cupcakes were good, but they were very dry. Even so, they are delicious and worth trying if you're in the neighborhood, but they're not a go-to for cupcakes in my opinion. ALSO, the special cupcakes like the unicorn and mermaid cupcakes cost more than the other ones and are not half a dozen for $23. read more

While I'm confident this business make fabulous cakes The ordering process is ridiculous. I've ordered many cakes and have never had such an unpleasant experience. I called and was very politely directed to the website. Really? Then the website doesn't clearly state what size cakes or even what flavors are available. Could it be the cupcakes listed can be made to cakes? I have no idea. Then the coup de grace... no prices. Just "what is your budget" ... so if one persons budget is higher than the next does the 1st one pay more for the same cake. This was so very disappointing. read more

I am absolutely obsessed with this place. I discovered them during the pandemic when they had a cute little table outside of the shop selling a bunch of things, including cake jars which are truly a gift to this earth. But honestly I've been stopping by most Fridays ever since. Nerwan never misses. She's always putting up new things while also keeping the classics around. The banana pudding is better than Magnolia's. I know it sounds dubious, but trust me. I literally bring everyone I know into the shop and have family members order custom cakes from her as well. Other than everything being unfailingly delicious, they have always been super COVID safe so you know they care about their customers. Razan (Nerwan's sister) usually works the front and knows my order before I get in there. Even if there's something new, she can guess what I'd like. That's how much they value their customers and I've seen them be the same with other regulars. If you're in the area and you don't stop by, you're really missing out. If you don't believe me, check their ig to see all the cool stuff they do! I really can't compliment them enough. read more

Cake is tasty, but be very very specific when ordering from this store. Neither the design, which was beautiful, nor the flavor was what I ordered. I provided a picture of a cake the owner had already made and asked for it to have the same texture. For some reason the design was only done on the bottom half of the cafe, missing the splatter on the rest of the cake. I ordered a raspberry dark chocolate butter cream. That is how it is written on the menu. What was given to me was a raspberry buttercream with dark chocolate chips. There is no mention of dark chocolate chips on the menu. Because of the menu, I expected a dark chocolate buttercream with raspberry flavor of some sort. If it had said dark chocolate chips I would have gone with a different option. I don't like chocolate chips. When I complained about this, I was told that if I wanted more information I should have asked. A menu is supposed to accurately represent an item. Instead I was told "what is listed is what is made"...clearly not. This cake was for a special occasion, and was disappointed with the customer service. Oh and to top it off, there was maybe a few chocolate chips spread out. It was really just a raspberry buttercream. EDIT: I asked for a partial refund, not a full refund as being purported, I didn't have time to wait for any changes to be made. That's not the owners fault, yet the design should have been made to specifics from the get go. There was no "bullying". I complained, that's different from bullying. read more

I was really excited to support this place, and after tasting her cakes (by paying for individual samples), I was enthusiastic knowing the product would be at least decent. But the online ordering system for a custom cake is an absolute joke, especially after I went in person to ask about just ordering it face to face and being redirected to the online portal. I tried ordering one of their custom samples initially, and was quoted in between 3 and 4 hundred dollars, but when I asked to jump up just one size, conversation totally stopped. I tried a follow up email, and radio silence. So I went back into the online portal (after my failed in-person attempt) to try ordering another style option (for only ten more servings than the initial order they left me hanging on), the quote jumped to 1776 dollars. Ridiculous! If you really want to make beautiful cakes for actual people, maybe try to work with them when they're there right in front of your face, instead of relying on shady and unreasonable and extortionist practices. (Edited to note that the business responded to my initial dropped email within minutes of my posting this review. They simply do not care about anything but their online reputation. They absolutely do not care about you. Avoid at all costs). read more
