Cakes by Nerwan is amazing! They made a custom cake for my husband's 50th birthday, and it was absolute perfection. He wanted a Shakespeare's Globe Theatre cake, and after I sent a few examples, they said they could do it -- and they nailed it. I guess I should thank the MTA for closing Astoria Boulevard station, because if I did not start using Ditmars Blvd station as a substitute, I wouldn't have discovered Cakes by Nerwan! The cupcakes are great. There are usually 6-8 different kinds of cupcakes you can choose from, and I like how options are small enough to not get confused or overwhelmed. My go-to is birthday cake cupcake, but I recently tried the Apple Pie cupcake and I just cannot get enough of it. The cinnamon butter cream is top notch and I enjoyed having a little bit of sautéed apples inside the cupcake. They sell cupcakes, cake jars, flower pots, brownies, and more! I was in the area with my sister who is vegan and she was excited that they have vegan desserts here. We went with the Vegan Oreo Cheesecake Jar (~$8). For a non-vegan like myself, I was surprised with how creamy it was. I liked the Oreo bits being soft and the cheesecake part being sweet and creamy. There was a good portion of both Oreo bits and cheesecake. It was enough to get a bit of both in each bite! I must say for one cake jar, it is pretty expensive. It seems like a one-time try for me. I just randomly happened to see this place when I had intended to stop by a donut place a couple doors down. First off, they have a short cute, very Instagrammable sign! Secondly, their Nutella cupcake is one of the best chocolate cupcakes I've ever had (and I've had a lot, believe me). It was incredibly light and moist, and it wasn't overwhelmingly chocolately. I was so excited for months leading up to her big day, following the shop on IG and even being willing to drive out to Queens to pick up the cake. When I initiated contact, sending photos of what I wanted, all I received were curt one-line e-mails, with no clarity at all on what the design would be (for example, I was told I couldn't put a 2D elephant on buttercream on the side...how am I supposed to know that, I'm not the one who's a baker!) The final straw was being told I they wouldn't give me a description or sketch of what the cake would look like. If I'm spending $500+ dollars for a cake for my daughter's big day, minimally I want to know what it's going to look like and most certainly don't need the attitude. I notice Cakes by Nerwan walking to the train station at Astoria. It's pretty new as I've never seen it before and have been around the neighborhood for years. I was just craving something sweet and sugary and decided to go in and try it. The staff was really friendly and welcoming. She had a continuous smile while helping me and was very kind. It was half a dozen for 23$ including tax and a dozen for a little less than $40 I believe. It was a little more expensive than I expected. I usually get my hard to beat, amazing cupcakes from Brooklyn Cupcakes, which is $15. I got a half a dozen, and my favorite was Nutella and chocolate chip. I was a little disappointed by the taste. The cupcakes were good, but they were very dry. Even so, they are delicious and worth trying if you're in the neighborhood, but they're not a go-to for cupcakes in my opinion. I was really excited to support this place, and after tasting her cakes (by paying for individual samples), I was enthusiastic knowing the product would be at least decent. But the online ordering system for a custom cake is an absolute joke, especially after I went in person to ask about just ordering it face to face and being redirected to the online portal. I tried ordering one of their custom samples initially, and was quoted in between 3 and 4 hundred dollars, but when I asked to jump up just one size, conversation totally stopped. I tried a follow up email, and radio silence. So I went back into the online portal (after my failed in-person attempt) to try ordering another style option (for only ten more servings than the initial order they left me hanging on), the quote jumped to 1776 dollars. Ridiculous! If you really want to make beautiful cakes for actual people, maybe try to work with them when they're there right in front of your face, instead of relying on shady and unreasonable and extortionist practices. Cake is tasty, but be very very specific when ordering from this store. Neither the design, which was beautiful, nor the flavor was what I ordered. I provided a picture of a cake the owner had already made and asked for it to have the same texture. For some reason the design was only done on the bottom half of the cafe, missing the splatter on the rest of the cake. I ordered a raspberry dark chocolate butter cream. That is how it is written on the menu. What was given to me was a raspberry buttercream with dark chocolate chips. There is no mention of dark chocolate chips on the menu. Because of the menu, I expected a dark chocolate buttercream with raspberry flavor of some sort. If it had said dark chocolate chips I would have gone with a different option. I don't like chocolate chips. When I complained about this, I was told that if I wanted more information I should have asked. A menu is supposed to accurately represent an item. Instead I was told "what is listed is what is made"...clearly not. This cake was for a special occasion, and was disappointed with the customer service. Oh and to top it off, there was maybe a few chocolate chips spread out. It was really just a raspberry buttercream. EDIT: I asked for a partial refund, not a full refund as being purported, I didn't have time to wait for any changes to be made. I am absolutely obsessed with this place. I discovered them during the pandemic when they had a cute little table outside of the shop selling a bunch of things, including cake jars which are truly a gift to this earth. But honestly I've been stopping by most Fridays ever since. Nerwan never misses. She's always putting up new things while also keeping the classics around. The banana pudding is better than Magnolia's. I know it sounds dubious, but trust me. I literally bring everyone I know into the shop and have family members order custom cakes from her as well. Other than everything being unfailingly delicious, they have always been super COVID safe so you know they care about their customers. Razan (Nerwan's sister) usually works the front and knows my order before I get in there. Even if there's something new, she can guess what I'd like.
