I love their green onion pancake which is super fluffy, soft, and delicious with their godfather sauce which is this sort of minced meat/flavorful sauce. They have a bunch of spciy dishes and stir fries, as well as stews etc. and generally their dishes are quite authentic. If you sit inside, it's quite cozy and casual with a few larger tables. I've also gotten their food for takeout which was still good, just a bit messier depending on what you order. Overall I prefer dining in just because some of their dishes are served on hot plates etc. to keep them warm while you're eating. read more

I've had better homemade ones. My favorite was the fried pig intestine. Crisp flavor with savory taste with a nice kick to the intensity of spice. The stir fried dishes were Legit too. I have ordered food from wonderful and have dined in. They seem really popular for to go / door dash etc orders. When we dined in they had almost 15 tickets lined up for to go orders. There were only 3 other groups dining in on a Thursday night, but the kitchen was super backed up and the food that we ordered took awhile to come out. We ordered the spicy boiled fish, beef and jalapeno, green onion pancake, fried tofu and pork, dan dan mian, and dry fried string beans. The dan dan mian came out first, it was a pretty small portion, the noodles were tasty but I think the size could have been a little larger. The spicy boiled fish was not sichuan style, it didn't have any numbing peppercorns and was more on the sweet side , I would not order this here. The beef and jalapeno was great!! Plenty of jalapenos, but on the saltier side so you need to eat it with rice. I also really enjoyed the string beans, fried tofu and pork, and the green onion pancake. (I'll probably be in their newsletter tomorrow. I welcome that!) I have spent $1000s at Wonderful and Chez Xue (same owners) over the past years. Anybody who regularly dines at these two restaurants probably knows that the owner is not all there. It's quite evident judging from their sheer aggressiveness and viciousness displayed in their newsletters (see attached photos), racist behaviors (search for foster city racist sign on Google), and shady businesses (~20% surcharge automatically added to the bill, and they have the audacity to claim that they are so generous that they __refuse__ tips). I falsely thought that this behavior was all okay and kept dining there because all these behaviors did not affect me personally. And it changed today: So we ordered take-out food (__only__ 8% surcharge compared to 20% for dining in). But we were in more hurry than we initially thought (also didn't help the food wasn't ready when we arrived), so we decided to have the "take-out" food on their tables outside. Honestly, I was happy to pay the 12% surcharge difference if they asked. After we started eating, somebody came out and kicked us out in front of all the other customers based on a sign that says "no takeout food allowed for dining in", NO DISCUSSIONS! Well, the first time being kicked out of a restaurant, and that's as a paying customer ($50 for 2 dishes). Needless to say, there is no way in the world I'll return to that place. What's the moral of the story here? By continuing to go to this restaurant despite all these red flags, I've empowered this restaurant to treat its customers like pigs. If you plan to go there today, please consider that you are nothing but a fat pig in their eyes, and they'll mistreat you eventually too. read more

I don't think they're indulging in hyperbole when they tout their authentic Hunan dishes. We tried the smoked pork with bamboo, which also included garlic, celery (somewhat of a novelty to me in Chinese dishes) and the ubitquitous red chile peppers. Here, the peppers were chopped, not served whole, so clearly meant to be consumed. The smoky flavor punched through, the bamboo is a tender revelation. One of our party proclaimed it the best General's chicken ever, and I have to say it was head and shoulders above the usual. No gloppy sauce here, again nicely seasoned with peppers, surprisingly enjoyable for what is usually a bastardized Chinese-American take. The onion pancakes surprised and delighted us. They seem to be rolled out very thin and then folder over multiple times, creating a dense stack that truly bears some resemblance to a stack a' flapjacks. Soft, pillowy, and the round meat sauce on the side was the chef's kiss. I don't know why locals complain about parking? There's a public lot right next store, and ample street parking. read more

Ordered godfather noodz, scallion pancakes, and intestine&tripe dish. I wish the godfather noodz were spicier, but it was just mild to me. I did enjoy the flavor and the noodles, but it didn't impress me too much. The scallion pancakes were definitely the most layered scallion pancakes I have ever seen. Trying it once was enough for me. I did bring them home, cut them in half horizontally, then toasted them in my toaster oven to make them crunchier, and finally slathered the godfather sauce/tripe&intestine leftover all over them. The intestine&tripe dish doesn't exactly pair well with the first two dishes we ordered, but it definitely stood out on its own! There was so much that we had leftovers and ate them for the next three meals! My bf who can't handle spicy, enjoyed it so much despite breathing in mumbling spicy several times. xD Overall, the ambience was nice and I really liked the feng shui. Service was great! She even asked how we were liking our food midway which is always a great sign. Food left me wanting more especially for the price. Why I am giving this establishment 2 stars is because we ordered takeout and when we got home, the potstickers had only 6 pieces, when prior orders came with 8 pieces. When I called to let them know that I only received 6 potstickers, when on their menu, it says it comes with 8, the lady on the phone told me that they changed it and that their menu now says 6. I'm gonna say it again (and continue to ruin w/e street cred I have left): this is my new fav restaurant in the bay lololol The good: Loved their boiled fish dish-- there's two: an $18 one we ordered by accident and one for $25 that also had tofu and cabbage.. we wanted the latter but the $18 was so delicious and thicckkk and packed with freshly cut garlic I can't even complain. Probably one of the yummiest I've ever had And don't even get me started on their ants climbing on tree dish (Vermicelli noodles soaked in Sichuan peppercorn sauce and pork)... ugh I still think about it The meh: I actually didn't finish writing this review until now and unfortunately, I went again and orders the boiled fish and the broth was not as thick or garlicky as I remember.. still delicious but it was more watery as you'd find in other places... and we also had their fried boneless chicken dish but my bf was saying it wasn't spicy enough and the pieces weren't dark meat like he's used to... wonderful has left such a good impression on me the first time, though that I will still give it five stars + will try to suggest they make my fish broth thicker next time lol read more

The first time we ordered the smork fried rice which was very delicious along with the kung pao chicken which I'd rate 5/5. However the second time we came here we ordered the Dan Dan noodles, iron pot tender beef and iron skillet shrimp. The Dan Dan noodles were okay. The tender beef wasn't very tender and compared to the iron skillet shrimp, had the same filler vegetables. They were mostly bell peppers, onions and celery. The sour flavor of the sauce in the shrimp dish wasn't good either. I would avoid these two dishes. Overall I think this place has better dishes that I have yet to try. read more

Excellent Chinese Restaurant on Broadway in Milbrae. Food -5/5- The food was amazing at wonderful. Very large portions for each dish which is always nice! Smoked pork with bamboo shoots was super delicious and unique. They use a 100 year old process /recipe for the smoked pork belly so it was certainly authentic. The fire beef dish was also delicious. The scallion pancake was amazing as well and is not fried like your typical scallion pancake. It's more of a Bao type dough and comes with a super flavorful meat based sauce. Definitely a must try! Ambiance - 5/5 - loved the ambiance here. We sat in one of the booths in the back that was very private. Also seems to be great for groups as well. Service -5/5 - Top notch service here. We were seated very quickly when we arrived. The waitress who served us was very attentive and answered all our questions. While trying to decide where, in Millbrae, to order dinner from the task suddenly grew amusing. I was interested in one well-reviewed place until I noticed their 54 out of 100 "health score". The next place I zeroed in on sported a score of 50 out of 100. The third place was 44 out of 100. By this time I was laughing. "Just how low can we go here in Millbrae?" I wondered. Then I found "wonderful" which I suddenly recalled someone recently recommending to me. Their health score - not something I generally pay a lot of attention to - was a solid 84 out of 100 and that in itself was encouraging. Without much further research, an order was placed, paid for, picked up, and brought back to me for consumption. We picked right, no doubt about it. As the bags from "wonderful" were being emptied I couldn't help but notice how lovely the food looked. Each dish came packed in a plastic rectangular container with a see-through top. The portions looked ample and attractive and I was glad. As many have noted, "wonderful" is a bit more expensive than other places but at least the extra cost seemed warranted when I saw how attractive the dishes looked. Between four of us we ordered numerous dishes and the only one that I didn't warm up to was one I see many people on here recommending: the Green Onion Pancake, a specialty of the house. I was expecting (hoping for) the usual thin, oily, onion-flavored pancake and what I got was something that looked more like thick pie slices. Though the "godfather sauce" that accompanied the pancakes was good in itself, I couldn't warm up to the pancakes and it was the only thing ordered which didn't get finished off. Not to worry as everything else was good. Very good. I'll let the pictures speak for me here but if someone suggested ordering again from "wonderful" I'd be interested in doing so and trying more items but not unhappy if we ordered the exact same dishes. If health scores are dogging your decision of where to eat stop worrying. Wonderful has both a good score and good food. Look no further. read more

Officially this is my favorite place for Chinese food. I've been there numerous times but now time for review. The flavors are authentically Hunan-style cooking. The menu is extensive as it has some of the unique foods that you normally can only find in China. Must to try: pork burger, lamb cilantro, and chili wings! The restaurant provides very good value for your money too. Lastly, the service was excellent. Our waiter constantly checked on us and changed plates. I stopped by here a while back on my way up from the South Bay. I had the cilantro beef... it was super dry, took probably 25min to bring out and the staff was somewhat rude and hard to communicate with. All of this together I would have probably given 2 stars but I'm not in the business of trashing a business on Yelp as stuff like this usually catches up to the restaurant. What drove me to post this is that the owner has recently been tearing down other restaurants in the area on another online forum. While also flaunting that he does not tip the wait staff, although he is a frequent visitor. Even after the restaurant was notified and went above and beyond (fully refunding his bill) he is doing 100x the damage to them by dragging their reputation through the mud online. With that, I was motivated to share my review and experience because this person should focus on their own business rather than repeatedly visiting mid level bar in sf, not tip their staff, then do major damage to their reputation online. read more

The mapo tofu with pork and the garlic eggplant are our favorite dishes. When you order the mapo tofu - ask for EXTRA SPICY EXTRA NUMBING. Otherwise, there isn't enough spice or sichuan peppercorns in it for the delicious numbing effect. read more

This place lives up to its name! Authentic Chinese food that is a bit on the pricier side, but absolutely wonderful. We ordered 4 dishes and it was enough for 4 people with ample amount of leftovers. Service for indoor dining was also very quick. Definitely recommend this place for its food and service. Godfather's Noodles: this is one of their specialties and it's delicious. The topping / sauce they make is spot on and you can even eat some with extra rice. Hunan Smoked Pork with Fried Tofu: also one of my favorites from the meal. The pork has a really nice smoky flavor and pairs well with everything else in the dish. Boiling Hot Fish Fillets: be warned -- this is huge! make sure to order some rice to enjoy that soup. Fish fillets were tender and everything was spiced well. Eggplant with garlic sauce: not sure if it's always seasoned like this, but the eggplant was way too sweet. I've had this place on my list for years, been wanting to try it especially after it had made it to the Michelin bib gourmand list. The thing with chinese cuisine is that it's best to do it family style, that way every one gets to try everything. I stopped by after getting pampered, I was starving, but i know I cant finish a single dish by myself. Since I'll be taking home leftovers, I'm just going to order 2 things just to try it out. They have menus out at the store front if you want to order for takeout, indoor and parklet seating available. Menu ordering is by popularity. Ended up picking the first item in the noodle section and near the last in their specialties. Considering how i was just dining by myself, this girl who was playing host and server was very attentive. I sat outdoor, not the smartest on a sunny day, there isn't any shade. I sat there hoping not to get sunburned while waiting for my godfathers noodle and my Hunan tripe. The dishes were huge, I don't know why I'm surprised. They can definitely feed 2-3 people. I did change up my noodles to be hand pulled. It's just the typical jiajiang noodles, with some minced meat and sliced cucumber. It's good but nothing special. The tripe dish put my noodles to shame. If you are a fan of spicy food, order this instead of spicy boiled beef or fish. This one had the heat and had the aromatic flavors from cilantro. The tripe was very crunchy. I couldn't stop myself from eating it. I made it through halfway just to have everything packed and wolf down the other half about 2 hours later. Definitely a staple northern chinese cuisine, better service than what I had imagined. I can see how they made it to bib gourmand. read more

Great spot for Chinese food! I've come here for dinner a few times now, and it's always been great. Parking in the area can be a bit difficult on a weekend, so be aware if you have a big group. Even though it can get pretty busy, I've never waited more than 20 minutes. My favorite dishes are the godfather noodles, especially with the hand-pulled noodles. The flavor of the meat is really tasty and the noodles have a great chew. The dandan noodles are also great! The sautéed string beans are also delicious, and super garlicy. I've also had the iron pot chicken wings, which have a nice spicy kick and great crunchy texture. The lamb and cilantro stir-fry is also great! The flavors are really tasty and satisfying to eat with rice. The mapo tofu is also great here, with a good amount of spice though I wish there was more meat. Personally I thought the boiling hot fish fillets were just alright, but they do have a really good spicy kick. I also was intrigued by the green onion pancake, which is really different from other places I've had it. It's super fluffy bread, with meat that can be added. The portion for this is pretty big so I'd recommend skipping unless you have a big party. The service can be slow at times, but they only have a few people running the restaurant and dealing with to-go orders so it's understandable. It can be hard to get someone's attention to get napkins or other requests, but we've never had to wait too long to order or for our food. Stopped by here this week to pick up lunch after seeing the great reviews and the Michelin Bib Gourmand here! I showed up early, but they were super speedy with the order and I definitely appreciated it! Lots of seating in this restaurant that seems a bit packed in, but it was completely empty when I was there - so kind of worked out! The food here was a 3.5 stars for me...we ordered: 1. Beijing jjajang meean - I was craving jjajang myun and saw this on the menu so I couldn't resist...boy was it salty though! I would definitely pass on this next time.. 2. Godfather's Noodles - the hand-rolled noodles are AMAZING, but this minced pork sauce was also super salty to me. Feeling sad since this was so highly rated by everyone else...poops! 3. Green Onion pancake - I REALLY liked the green onion big pancake. It was like a big loaf of bread ...and I do love all carbs, so basically this was an easy favorite! 4. Beef noodle soup - my favorite noodle dish of the 3 we ordered. The soup was perfectly seasoned and the beef wasn't overcooked. There was some questioning on whether or not the dishes had msg in it...but I didn't get crazy thirsty in the middle of the night, so the verdict is still out. 5. Smork Fried Rice - The smork was legit good..but the rest of the rice was kind of flavorless to me. Still had really good reviews on yelp, so maybe it's just me?? Overall good experience! When we were here during the bustle, it seemed very understaffed. It seemed like there was only 1 woman taking the orders, and there was only 1 bus boy. This place specializes in smoked pork (smork), so you will see this in a lot of dishes. I had the smork with smoked tofu, godfather's noodles, and dry sautéed string beans. The smoked tofu was a little weird tbh, but I guess it's an acquired taste. The godfather's noodles were delicious and full of flavor. The string beans were cooked nicely. The smork reminded me of bacon in presentation, and I recommend giving it a try. read more

We're big fans of wonderful! It's conveniently located in downtown (close the BART and Caltrain), but if you're driving there's also plenty of street parking and lots! The menu has a nice range of options! While no one dish has wowed me so far, it's a generally tasty meal every time. I would say the dishes are on the saltier side and occasionally lack flavors other than salt, but I've still enjoyed every meal here. As far as prices go, it's still one of the better places to get a couple of dishes and rice to split! I always hope to eat here again when I'm in the area. read more
