We ordered their specialty hainan chicken with noodles and fried chicken cartilage. The noodle soup severely lacked flavor, and the noodles had a weird texture to them. The chicken was okay - one portion was leg/dark meat and one portion was breast/white meat, so I guess it's luck of the draw with what you get. The fried chicken cartilage also lacked flavor and mostly just tasted like oil. They were really busy for a weekday lunch, and service was a bit hit-or-miss.
This place is similar to the one in Cupertino. Their menu is exactly the same. The Cupertino location is much bigger and don't feel as cramp. Seating in Cupertino location is definitely more spacious. In this location, since it's smaller, the tables are very close to each other. You can hear next table's conversation. There is no privacy. Be careful what you say during meal. The Chiu Chow Duck, Hainan Chicken, the noodle soup and Brined Tofu dishes taste exactly the same as the Cupertino location. Both the Chiu Chow Duck and the Hainan Chicken are their signature dishes. They are both excellent and are must-haves. The Brined Tofu is good too. Outside is crunchy and inside is soft. Recommend eating this as soon as it comes to your table, or outside crunchy skin becomes soggy. One interesting difference is this location has Braised Pork Knuckle in the menu while this dish isn't available in Cupertino. We tried it and it's excellent. The pork knuckles are tender and flavorful. The Wood Ear Mushroom salad is very disappointing. It's almost tasteless and the flavor is super weak. The one in Cupertino taste much better with stronger flavor. Despite we came for late dinner, we had to wait a little bit for a table. Once you are seated and after food is ordered, food came out fast.
We stopped by this restaurant during the Lunar New Year festival and as much as I thought I would like the noodles here, unfortunately I didn't. I was debating between the rice plate vs noodles but it was a cold day and I felt like I wanted soup more than rice. My husband, daughter and I sat outside as inside was packed. We could have waited but we decided not to since we were hungry and it was already 1:30pm. What we ordered: - Special Hainan Chicken Noodle: I ordered this one and I wasn't very satisfied with this. The hainan chicken itself was great but the broth just didn't taste that flavorful for me. It tasted a bit water down for me and I had to add a bunch of sauce for me to add a bit more. - Beef Brisket & Tendon Noodle: My husband ordered this one and they use the same original broth as chicken which I felt like the flavor sort of tastes the same. Nothing special. He thought the noodles were ok as well. - Pan Fried Fish Cake: We ordered this one as an appetizer and this one actually tasted good! Lots of flavor and super tasty. Overall I'd give this place 3.5 stars. I'll have to try their hainan chicken rice plate next time!
Came in on a Saturday morning and suddenly the whole restaurant had already filled up lol. Really shows you how good this place is Wonderful prices to serving ratio, and food is served really quickly Their broth was very tasty and the Hainan style chicken is well cooked. Great place for a bang for buck meal in the area!
Another place that I tried for Hainan Chicken and just as tiny inside as Tiny G's Slice for pizza. Order The Medium size of just the Hainan chicken and another order with the rice. The chicken was "on fire" and definitely prepared on point which brought back memories when I first had this item on my trips to Singapore! I definitely will be back again for their chicken and a solid 5 stars for tonight's order. Would I dine in? It all depends as the seating from what I saw is very cramped to the point I could probably grab bites of chicken from the table next to me- just kidding but the tables are close together.
So far, one of the best places for hainan chicken! Their chicken is always cooked perfectly and the meat is still juicy. Served cold to retain the bouncy texture for the skin and meat. The green onion on the side is addicting and wish I could order more. Cucumber salad was a nice inclusion and not too garlicky. Rice was nicely flavored and highly recommend to always get "oily rice." Fragrant with a touch of coconut as well. Fried calamari was ok but wished it was more seasoned. Wouldn't order that again. I did also get the chiu chow duck but forgot to take a picture. That was also pretty good and well seasoned if you like a lighter duck. Can't go wrong here without getting their signature dishes!
Arrived at around 6:30pm on a Sunday. We were seated quickly and made it before the dinner rush. They have a good number of food options to choose from, but I went with their specialty - the Hainan Chicken rice. The broth that came with the dish was flavorful. The dish came with a decent portion of chicken and rice, along with the cucumber and mushroom side and peanuts. May not look like much but it was filling. The chicken was meaty and tender; however, unfortunately, the flavor was lacking for me. The ginger scallion sauce is usually my fave part of the whole Hainan chicken experience, but this one was lacking as well. Hubs went with the duck rice - same in that the duck was meaty and tender but the flavor was lacking overall. Liked the fried chicken gristle and kiddo enjoyed the fried calamari, though. Service was good in that they kept our water cups filled and cleared dishes right away.
This restaurant was packed on a Tuesday night. I think they were overwhelmed because our orders were not placed correctly and some of our plates were missing items. We each got a plate of the hainan chicken with rice. I was surprised that the chicken was cold and lacked flavor. However I liked the rice which was flavored well along with the wood ear mushroom /cucumber side. The shrimp balls were also a pretty good appetizer but not a must get.
Rainy Wednesday and looking for hot soup nearby and we ended up trying this place - I shared the Laksa curry soup with my son and it's good - though they could have put more seafood for the price. The potstickers are also good - fast and friendly service. The choices of noodles offering is nice to have..
I came first time during pandemic. This time I ordered just quarter hainamese chicken to go as I heard ftom my friend their hainamese chicken is really good. It is busy restaurant. Last Yemen I came for the noodle soup. The chicken was about $11 -$12 after tax. It comes with the ginger dipping sauce and peanut. I wish they give more ginger dipping sauce.The only differeng with whole meal is the rice. The chicken was good. It was tender. Next time will visit and eat in.
Came at 7:30, and there was no line, so we got seated immediately. We ordered the special Hainan chicken flat noodle soup, a fried fish cake appetizer, and the beef combo noodle soup. This place never disappoints when I'm craving Hainan chicken. The chicken was flavorful and juicy--I was lucky to get the chicken leg on my plate. The staff was very helpful when we asked about their membership program. The place is clean, and I didn't feel cramped at all. There was plenty of street parking at that time.
This place comes recommended to me by my sister so we decided tog I've it a try and I will say the first time around I was slightly disappointed but now I find myself craving for this spot. The first time around my fiancé and I ordered the laksa noodles with the recommended fish noodles (absolutely hated the texture and couldn't finish it) and he ordered the hainan chicken over rice and an order of the beef tripe on the side. The laksa noodle soup broth was really good, I just wasn't a fan of the texture of the fish noodles. I ordered rice noodles with it the second time around and enjoyed the dish much more. The hainan chicken was pretty good, well-seasoned and quite meaty. As for the beef tripe, it was also flavorful but didn't care for it that much. Overall, we enjoy the food here and will definitely return.
Stopped by for lunch after visiting my auntie that lives nearby & oh my god it is delicious. Hainanese chicken is such a nostalgic dish for me because I grew up eating this dish & this definitely hit. I'm a big fan of noodles as well so combining Hainanese chicken and noodles? Heck yeah, sign me up! I got their knife cut noodles because I like thicker chewy noodles and it did not let me down. Their broth was definitely the highlight. I could not believe how flavorful the broth was. Would definitely come back just for the noodle soup.

I recently visited Special Hainan Chicken and had such a great experience. I've always loved dishes like intestines--it's part of my culture and how I was raised. I know it's not for everyone, and it can be hard to find a place that prepares it really well. But this restaurant did it perfectly. The intestines were incredibly clean, tender, and flavorful--no smell or anything that would make you uncomfortable. You can tell they really know how to cook it right. What made it even more special was that my son decided to try it for the first time--and he loved it! That moment meant a lot to me. On top of that, the prices are very reasonable. I'll definitely be coming back and highly recommend this place, especially if you appreciate authentic flavors done right. read more
Popular lunch spot here in Millbrae, I lucked out each visit either coming before the crowd formed or had a late lunch. They do have outdoor seating, not that it would help much when the lunch crowd is huge. Since the store name emphasizes on Hainan chicken, i havent quite explored their other menu items. First time I had the Hainan chicken rice plate, another time I had the noodle version. Funnily I find their rice plate version smaller portioned than the noodle soup, however it's not a true Hainan chicken experience without having oil rice. Both dishes serve Hainan chicken with scallion oil marinade and roasted peanuts. While noodles have oyster mushroom and spinach, rice plate has pickled veggies. Overall it gets the craving settled, its not the greatest though. The noodle soup was an interesting option. It feels a bit like when youre making noodle soup at home and just tossed in random toppings. I had corn, spinach, oyster mushroom. Definitely not a combo I see commonly. The soup was not bad, its drinkable, not salt at all. However its a bit odd to pair it with Hainan chicken, perhaps better with fishcake or meat balls, I did see a meatballs version. They do have other noodle style and broths to choose from, such as hot and sour, laksa. They do offer fish paste noodle if you want a teeny tiny bit more protein. Overall food is okay. It's nothing to rave about, even though I love Hainan chicken. read more

We saw this place got recommend in a social media app and went to check it out. The price was amazing, the plates were around $15 each which is a steal! The food quality, however, was just mediocre. We got the Hainanese chicken rice and the pork trotter rice. Both were served with a soup on the side. The soup was nice and warm. The Hainanese chicken rice was honestly pretty good. The rice was fragrant and flavorful and the chicken paired well with the rice. The pork trotter rice was not good unfortunately. The photo made it look like it's braised in soy sauce. The dish however looked nothing like the photo on the menu. The pork trotter fell apart and it was bland. There were also a lot of bones in the trotter that made it hard to eat. Not sure if I would go back to this place, but the value is worth it though. read more

Placed a takeout order at this place and I couldn't believe they placed a fried eggroll on top of the side vegetables with sauce. What do you think it would happen??? That's right, a soggy, cold, wet eggroll. Definitely interesting?!?! Couldn't they afford to spend an extra $0.05 on a small paper bag and placed the eggroll separately? The chef probably had a bad day because the chicken was overcooked and tough. You had to dunk the chicken in the ginger scallion sauce to give it flavors. I'm disappointed because I'm a huge Hainan chicken fan but I found this to be inauthentic. Maybe I'm more used to Singaporean/Malaysian style Hainan chicken where the chicken is super tender and you dip the chicken in the sauce, but this place is completely different. The chicken is much less tender and somewhat salty by itself. There is also no sauce. There is a flavored green onion on the side which basically makes the chicken (scallion oily chicken) 葱油鸡 not 海南鸡 Hainan chicken in my books. The taste is not bad per se just not as good as I expected from the name. The oily rice also tastes different from what I'm used to for Hainan chicken. The place can be popular so you may have to wait for a seating. There is a small outdoor seating area in addition to the indoor area. This used to be a noodle place but the food is basically the same. The service is alright and they do come help you quickly. Overall it's an alright quick eatery but I just won't consider it Hainan chicken. read more
A place to go back to. The hainan chicken is very tasty. The chicken is cooked perfectly and moist. The green onion oil is perfect and it's you can tell it's freshly made. Got the beef noodle soup and it was delicious. The portion is good size. The noodles was cooked perfectly. The soup broth was flavorful. The beef was tender and flavored. Got this item Togo and the beef was still steaming hot when I got home. The peanuts here are delicious as crunchy. Fresh roasted peanuts with flavor. The chicken wings was hot and crispy. I think it could use a little more salt/pepper seasoning. The fries were ok. Sadly it wasn't much fries in a large take out box read more

Solid food, typical Chinese place level service. Got here at around 2PM on a Sunday so we thought there would be little to no wait but we were sorely mistaken. Wait was not long but we weren't able to get the table we were hoping for which was fine. Got seated and tables were relatively close together. They didn't give menus right away so we grabbed it ourselves which they apologized for. After ordering, they gave us our utensils but they only gave us specifically how many heads there were. Food was good. I liked the option diversity and the chicken broth was soo rich and tasty. I got the tom yum soup and it was great. The knife cut noodles were super tasty but I do think it would be tastier in a dry noodle vs a soup - I changed the noodle though so it was my choice. Either way, it was delish. The braised beef was super tender & everyone left satisfied! Would definitely return because I want to know what fish noodles are & I want to try more soups! read more

You can make a dupe of Hainan Chicken at home with a shortcut version but sometimes I just wanna enjoy some at a restaurant. Even though the recipe is fairly simple, it can be hard to perfect. Some chickens come out bland while others come out too dry. This dish is super popular here and the restaurant in general is quite busy. Arriving on a weekday around noon, practically every table had authentic Chinese dining here for their usual. We tried: $12.95 Special Hainan Chicken combo where you get a big bowl of customized noodle soup -- you choose the type of noodle and type of broth. We went with the original which was pretty simple but was not lacking in flavor. This comes up quarter chicken and upon arrival, I knew I should've order the half chicken instead. Chiu Chow Brined Duck $9.95 for a quarter. I love duck but honestly roast duck is the best way to go. This was like a soy sauce duck basically. All appetizers are $9.99 so we tried the SALTY SHREDDED CHICKEN which reminded me of Chinese Chicken Salad. I really liked the simplify of the onions with shredded chicken breast, although I would've enjoyed red onions more. The added salty peanuts were a nice crunchy contrast. SALT & PEPPER CALAMARI TENTACLES -- this one was a little disappointing as you can tell right away that the squid was previously frozen. They tried their best to coat it with a tasty batter but the squid itself was flavorless. Service was super prompt and we really had minimal wait for our dishes. This place is super casual but they're efficient. I would definitely come here again and try the Laksa noodle soup and MORE HAINAN CHICKEN!! read more

Ordered takeout from this spot for the first time and the whole process was super convenient. I called in my order and the food was ready in about 15 minutes--still piping hot by the time I got home, which I really appreciated. I tried their special combo: laksa soup with fish noodles. The soup itself was full of flavor--rich, aromatic, and comforting. However, I wasn't a fan of the fish noodles. They had a strong fishy taste and the texture wasn't quite right for me. Next time, I'd definitely get the laksa again but swap in regular noodles. It is also on the oily side though. My husband ordered the knife-cut noodles with spicy sauce. It was just okay--nothing really memorable, but not bad either. We also tried the Chiu Chow deep-fried shrimp balls, and honestly, they were a bit of a letdown. They weren't very crispy, and the flavor didn't really stand out. We're planning to come back and try one of their rice plates next time--there's definitely more on the menu we want to explore. read more
We stopped by right before closing so the shop was entirely empty. We were seated and quickly ordered because we came here for one thing and one thing only. Their hainan chicken and noodle special! For $15, you get a whole order of a noodle of your choice with a side of hainan chicken. I came here with my mom and boyfriend and two orders of the special was more than enough for us. The noodles are nothing crazy but still very good and filling. On the other hand, the chicken is quite excellent. The service is extremely fast, so great spot to stop and grab a quick bite! read more

Service was good, staff was friendly! We ordered the hainan chicken rice, hainan chicken combo with the normal rice noodle, chicken laksa and beef brisket rice. Everything was good! Small restaurant that gets pretty packed during dinner time. The main dish they advertise is their hainan chicken rice plate which tasted pretty good. The chicken is cold and I loved the pickled veggies on the side. I also tried their laksa broth udon noodles. The broth tastes exactly like the liquid from Hong Kong curry fish balls. As for the tentacles, they were pretty generous with the serving size. The flavor is on the saltier side and the tentacles are decent quality. read more

Solid Hainan Chicken dishes all around! Definitely good value and not San Francisco Bay Area pricing. Staff is very welcoming and friendly. Small indoor eatery but outdoor seating is also available. I've dined here twice for lunch. Good experiences both times. Lots of take out orders and there can be a wait during the lunch hour, so be aware. Parking is convenient. Give them a try! read more

I really wanted to like Special Hainan Chicken, but unfortunately it didn't live up to the name or the price. The portion was surprisingly small for the cost, and the menu was confusing -- especially the $1 add-on for soup, which felt unnecessary for something so basic. The service was also a letdown. Staff were curt and seemed impatient when I asked questions about the menu. As for the food, it was just... not good. Noticed this place when making a stop at TP Tea and decided to order takeout for dinner. Special Hainan Chicken has a lot of Chiu Chow style type of dishes. I always order brine tofu when it's available at restaurants and tofu was cut in half then deep fried and brined in their sauce. I personally prefer a thicker cut of tofu and the sauce was light and didn't flavor the tofu enough. I also ordered the mixed meatball soup with flat rice noodle and accidentally ordered the (C02)brined duck over rice instead of the (C01)Hainan chicken by ordering the wrong number and then correcting it but the lady didn't hear me and I didn't find out until I got home. The meatball soup was exactly as I had imagined and was super rich in flavor, however the brined duck was a bit dry. I came across Special Hainan Chicken and had to check it out! A fairly, new spot in Millbrae serving Hainanese Chicken and soup noodles. Their prices looked reasonable and the food pics looked good! The place was clean and decor is like a Hong Kong-style cafe. It was a Friday afternoon around 12:15 and there was a waitlist! When I signed up, we were #6. But this line went quickly and we were seated within 15 minutes. We got our order in after a 5-minute look at the menu. Then in 10-15 minutes, we got our food! Quick service! ***OUR PICKS*** BRAISED BEEF STEW AND BEEF TENDONS (appetizer/side) ~ A nice portion of tender beef stew and soft tendons! We enjoyed this and added it to the soup noodles that went with the chicken combo dish. 4/5 SPECIAL HAINAN CHICKEN COMBO ~ Rice noodles in original broth, with a quarter portion of Hainan chicken with green onion sauce and roasted peanuts. I chose the flat rice noodles and kept the original broth. You get a large bowl of noodle soup and a side of chicken for $13! What an awesome deal! The chicken was tender and the noodles were fresh, slurpable, and silky. Though the broth was a bit sweeter than expected, it was still good. The sweetness may be from boiling it for 20 hrs. 4.5/5 CHOICE OF NOODLES: *Thin rice *Fish *Knife cut *Vermicelli *Udon *Flat rice *Instant CHOICE OF BROTH: *Original special chicken broth boiled for 20 hrs *Laksa *Tom yum *Chiu Chow Soup *Tomato PORK KNUCKLE OVER RICE ~ Braised pork knuckle, served over a bed of freshly steamed rice, and seasonal vegetables with original broth. We got about 5 pork knuckles with a side of pickled ginger, smashed cucumbers, and wood ear mushrooms. It was tasty and good! Love the chewy texture! 4/5 3 plates fed the 3 of us. We were quite full and could have possibly saved some, but took it all down! I can't say it's the best we've ever tasted, but it was certainly good and satisfying.
