I was solo traveling this week through SF and stopped by for an early lunch. My phone was dying and I needed it to navigate and call Ubers. Wildseed is one of my favorite spots in SF. The ambiance and restaurant decorations are so welcoming, tastefully decorated. It's an all vegan spot in the Marina (also have a branch in Palo Ato) I have been here multiple multiple times but will do a review of my most recent visit. We walked in and were seated for a party of 4 quite immediately. For starters we ordered the Spicy Eggplant with Shittake Mushrooms. This was SO delicious, super spicy but very flavorful. We also got the Mezze platter - which was good. For mains we got the following: Spicy Sausage Pizza, Tofu Skewers, Wildseed Burger, and Impossible Burger (All Vegan, Vegetarian) The Wildseed Burger was phenomenal - super flavorful. The fries that came with it were good - they weren't as good as the Belga Fries I usually get though. The Vegan Sausage pizza was delicious, I usually get mine without cheese since I'm not a fan of vegan cheese. The peppers and marinara are delicious. I found Wildseed to be unfriendly for those of us with celiac disease. The manager seems either misinformed or misguided about how to serve us. To start, the menu identifies dishes as "cg" (contains gluten) rather than affirmatively identifying dishes as GF (standard practice). Also, Wildseed does not offer GF bread of any sort for brunch. The only brunch option is to order a $27 pizza. I ordered the autumn salad with the request that they substitute GF quinoa for the farro. The quinoa arrived as a "side" in a small bowl, so I could confirm it was in fact quinoa before sprinkling it on top. As I reached the bottom of the bowl, I noticed a different chewy texture. To my dismay, farro was hiding beneath the lettuce. I promptly spit it out and called the waiter. On the rare occasion a restaurant makes such a serious mistake, the staff profusely apologizes, offers an alternative and comps the dish. At Wildseed, the manager took the opposite approach. She tried to convince me that the salad was ok to eat because it was NOT FARRO, even though I could see with my own eyes that it looked just like the attached picture. She has no idea how sick a celiac person can get from eating farro. I insisted that I didn't feel safe eating it. After a long wait, they brought me a $27 pizza instead and removed the salad from the bill. The total for two was over $70 for a brunch without any alcohol. I'm never going back! read more

Review based on San Francisco Restaurant Week visit: I've been wanting to try Wildseed forever. When I got tipped off that their menu for Restaurant Week was going to be very worthy of a visit, it was my signal to finally check it out. For $30, I'd say it was good value for their 3-course meal. In San Francisco, lunch in a similar trendy restaurant in an upscale area like this could easily run close to $50. And I for one, definitely appreciate a deal, especially during a recession (only going to get worse) when I'm thinking hard about where I want to spend my money. The appetizers were easily my favorite. The Mexican Corn Cakes with fresh charred corn are a popular dish and was the star for me. The Ceviche of King Trumpet Mushrooms were equally good. The Ceviche was more of a broth, which I didn't expect, but did enjoy. For a carnivore like myself, the Chicken Sandwich was surprisingly better than I'd expected for plant based chicken. However, the chicken arrived well before my companion's Orecchiette All Pugliese entree. So that we could actually have our entrees together, they voluntarily removed the chicken and said they would re-make it. It tasted to me as if it was kept warm under heat lamps or something. Regardless, it altered the texture of the bun, and not in a good way. It was unfortunate because I did like the plant based chicken. I'd say the Orecchiette was meh. Somewhat bland and I wasn't big on the somewhat mushy texture of the Beyond Sausage. The texture of the Vanilla Coconut Panna Cotta was inconsistent. One was served very chilled and had a very smooth and silky texture, the way it should be. The other was served room temperature with an almost clumpy like texture. More pluses than minuses, especially with the apps and vibes. I'd like to try more of the menu. Good introduction (and good deal), thanks to San Francisco Restaurant Week. read more

The BELGA FRIES with vegan herb aioli, vegan chipotle aioli, curry ketchup. GREEN FALAFEL with soy tzatziki, cilantro, seeded flatbread. SMASH BURGER with impossible meat, tomato chutney, vegan chipotle aioli, coconut american cheese PIZZETTA marinara, coconut mozzarella, coconut parmesan which we were able to hold the mushrooms and truffle oil. Dining in their outdoor area under the warm heaters this January was one of the most memorable parts of our trip to San Francisco. I truly enjoyed our entire meal. As a vegan who visits the city once or twice a year, I had heard of this restaurant sooner, but didn't make an effort to check it out until recently. I'm glad I finally did. I would recommend what we ate but seems the menu has rotated already, but I can praise the mezze plate and spicy sausage pizza. Price wise, it is steeper than I would call a great value. Sadly, it was evident from the dishes I ordered that the person or persons preparing them had very little culinary training or expertise. I ordered the mushroom zeppole which weren't light and crispy as would be expected. Instead the fritters were oily and stodgy due to being fried in oil that wasn't at the right temperature and because the moisture in the mushrooms had leaked into the dough. The second item I ordered was the Waldorf salad which was massively over dressed and limp on arrival. It was also apparent that the person preparing the salad had only rudimentary knife skills as the dicing of apples and vegetables in the salad was massively irregular. Dessert wasn't much better. I ordered the beet-chocolate cake with milk chocolate gelato and bruleed banana. The crumb of the cake was tough due to being over mixed. Additionally the cake was dry due to being over baked. The texture of the "gelato" was more like that of a sorbet and was grainy not dense and creamy as you would expect for a gelato. These are all rookie mistakes. Full disclosure, I'm a former cook (at fairly well known restaurants) and it would appear that the chef , at least that night on New Year's Eve, wasn't running QA on plates as they went out. In one restaurant in which I worked, QA was run on every station's plates BEFORE serve up. Then we'd have about 45 minutes to make adjustments. I think what confuses me about the poor quality of these dishes is that it would have cost the house far less in overhead to make smaller more perfect dishes than to serve large poorly prepared ones. On a brighter note, our waitress was very accommodating and attentive. To conclude and to paraphrase the mighty Jay Rayner, these were dishes that would have been served at a wedding reception filled with regret, in the hotel of sorrows just off the highway of broken dreams.... read more

My friends were visiting from Chicago, and though open to new experiences, they are not vegan. After our meal, they said they could eat like this every day! Wild Mushroom Zeppole - $12 If you order an appetizer, this is a really unique and delicious choice. Tons of umami of course, soft and fluffy, lightly fried on the outside. You get 6 pieces here, and the aioli is great. Spicy Yellow Curry - $19 This was good. I really enjoyed that they switched up the rice and went forbidden. Nothing to write home about, but it's nice to have such a variety of cuisine. Warm Beet And Banana Chocolate Cake - $12 I honestly wouldn't recommend this. It's more of a flourless chocolate cake than a regular cake, which isn't my favorite, especially when combined with the gelato, which has essentially the same texture and flavor. If you like a lot of very rich, dark chocolate flavor, you may enjoy this. Me, I was a bit overwhelmed with one flavor and one texture. Cookie Skillet - $12 This was quite yummy. The cookie was nice, I loved the sea salt on top, and who doesn't love a good scoop of (vegan) ice cream melting into the crevices? At Wildseed, the price vs. portion isn't always the best. Came for brunch after having a dinner here a few weeks ago. Service was great, food was good and the menu was varied. Honestly our party of three had a difficult time deciding what not to get. Chilaquiles were flavorful. I got the French toast which was incredibly decadent but as a vegan can never be ordered. My MIL got the spicy sausage omelet. Having recently tried twelve month in Burlingame, I think Wildseed has better food at better prices. Will definitely return and definitely recommend. We had a reservation for 7:30pm on a Friday. The hostess stand was swamped when we arrived so it took a little time but when we finally spoke to them, we were seated quickly. Cocktails were amazing but overall service was slow. Food came out quickly though. This place felt very "hip" but I liked it overall. We ordered spicy cucumbers and the beet tostada to start. The cucumbers were not really that spicy but I still liked them overall. Beet tostada was very colorful but I could have skipped it since my meal was a large portion. For my main I ordered the sausage orecchiette. It was divine! The sausage was flavorful and the sauce was silky. I finished with the chocolate beet cake which was actually incredible. It was almost like lava cake. The banana that was served with it was creme brulee'd and was such a perfect pairing. Arrived at 11:30 with a reservation and got seated right away inside! Super aesthetically pleasing on the inside with all of the foliage, definitely an instagram-able place. The service was great! Our server came by to check on us a couple of times and filled up our water jug whenever it got low. Now for the food! We ordered a bunch of different items : Mexican corn cakes (7/10), the aioli was tasty and the corn cakes were sweet! Definitely a small sharable dish -- comes with three pieces. Banana fritters (9/10), the chocolate spread is nice and bitter, a good compliment to the sweet banana fritters! They were nice and toasty when they got to the table + crunchy on the outside but nice and soft inside. Omelet (5/10), nothing special, just your average run of the mill omelet. I wish they would have added more of the sauce all over the omelet because the flavor is very one-noted. Ceviche (3/10), I wasn't expecting anything seafood-like at all (plus I've never really liked seafood or really eaten ceviche) but this dish was extremely underwhelming. I would pass on it. Spicy yellow curry (9/10), the curry is literally SO GOOD but I definitely would say that it's a lot sweeter than most yellow curry that I've had. If i had to go back, I would definitely order this again! I've never had "forbidden rice" but it honestly went really well together. The color threw me off initially, but yum! Squash pizza (2/10), Probably the most disliked dish ordered out of everything. Everybody agreed that it was very underwhelming and not worth the purchase for it's price point. There really was no flavor whatsoever and there was like maybe 10 pieces of squash tops. Overall, the experience was just okay. To preface, I'm not a vegan but I went in with 0 expectations or presumptions of what the food would be like. I was definitely delighted to see such a large array of items and I'm happy that the vegan community has gained a nice little brunch spot that can hopefully get people to eat more conciously, but I probably wouldn't go out of my way to eat here again just because it is a rather pricey establishment. Wildseed is a great vibe for vegans to have full ownership of the menu - I'd say closer to 4.25-4.5/5 stars. RESERVATIONS: It is pretty easy to get a reservation for 6 mid-week for Sunday brunch! And the alc selection is great (loved the Elderberry fizz, very fruity). FOOD: Large group so we ordered and split! - Chilaquiles: did a good job for vegan chilaquiles (biased bc I love this dish in general!!) - Carrot/Lox: delicious - was very surprised how much I liked it. The carrot/capers were acidic and punchy on the bread. - Cauliflower: fried well and loved the sauce on the bottom! - Polenta Cakes: a bit mid. Need a bit more flavor (we added the salad on top for some crunch and that helped). - Mezze Plate: all the dips were pretty good, the multigrain bread was amazing! Feta was hit or miss at the table (I thought it was accurate but others were less into it). - Ceviche: super fresh, mushrooms soaked well and the vinaigrette was delicious - a good balance with everything else on the table. - Banana fritters: very fluffy but mild banana flavor. I saw them as a vehicle for the chocolate sauce on the bottom :) - Arugula salad: really good! Overall, my 5/5 recs are cauliflower, chilaquiles, and carrot/lox, and I would skip on polenta cakes next time. SERVICE: Servers were really nice, they were patient with my group (who showed up 30 minutes late lol). They did miss a couple of asks (hot sauce, coffee, etc) - just seems like they were understaffed for a Sunday morning. The last time I went to the Palo Alto location was a 5/5, but I wasn't as wowed this time with what I ordered so 4 stars. I think I was looking for a bit more flavor from most things! Also, I tend to prefer dishes thot go vegan by omitting ingredients instead of trying to sub every non-vegan ingredient for a vegan one!
