Perfect way to finish the meal. We had a nice little conversation which made the whole experience even better. The atmosphere was really nice and the food was delicious. The small bites they offered were a thoughtful detail. Disappointing :( I know that chefs sometimes take their own interpretation of a classic dish..but when it's SO FAR from what the dish should be, I think you should be respectful enough to change the name! Heres a few examples for you: 1. Breakfast Crespelle - Please look up what a classic Italian crespelle looks like. It's a thin dough (almost a crepe) thats stuffed and rolled. You usually get 2 or 3 of them on a plate. *We got what looked like an half moon omelet with toppings. Let me add a skimpy amount of toppings. The flavor was ok but really underwhelming , not at all filling and NOT a crespelle. 2. Breakfast Piadina - Please look up what a classic Italian piadina looks like. It's a thin dough (almost a pita) with meat and cheese etc. thats folded, so it's a sandwich. *We got was a bagel like bread bowl with a small hole with meat and cheese. Let me add again a SKIMPY amount of meat and cheese with a fried egg on top and some white beans. **Let me stress that the meat and cheese portion was like SO SKIMPY that 75% of my bites were dense pretzel/bagel like bread! The flavor was ok but again NOT a piadina. Other disappointing items were the following: 1. Espresso. It was super sour. 2. Maritozzo - We saw there were some pastries in a display case by the counter and we decided to get the Maritozzo. We had no idea that we would be served the one from the actual case which was STALE AF!!! Thank god the cream was good because it was helpful to slater the stale pastry with it. Also, for 12:30 in the afternoon on a Sunday it was pretty dead for brunch in Pac Heights. I should have known something was up and walked out :( I considered coming back for dinner on one of their $30 pasta plates but after brunch I figured it would be another expensive "interpretation" of a classic Italian dish they will fall short on delivering. read more

Everything was good except the food. The vibe of the restaurant, the seating arrangements at the chef's counter where you can watch them cook, and the hospitality were amazing! However, I just couldn't justify this experience for a dinner for 2 for $150+. The pasta pie's meatball had a tofu like texture, more like cooked pate than an actual hearty meatball. For the pasta, the sauce tasted sweet, but not in a good way. But the kicker for me was probably some of the worst short rib I've had. I ate barely half of my portion before I packed it up to go (just to try to convince myself I'll eat it later, but 3 days after as I'm writing this review I've still avoided it in my fridge). The short rib was tender, but somehow still dry. The wine sauce was sour / acidic. I really wanted to like it but I couldn't. I rarely write negative reviews, but this experience was so bizarre that it genuinely left me wondering how this place stays open. I came in around 11am on a Saturday, which should be peak brunch time in the Fillmore. The restaurant was nearly empty, which in hindsight should have been my first clue. There was no host and no greeting when I walked in. I asked if I could sit at the bar and was told to "sit anywhere," with the kind of tone that suggests you've already inconvenienced someone simply by existing. When the server/manager finally approached, I asked what he recommended. His response was that he "can't tell people what to order" and that I "need to think for myself." Apparently asking for a recommendation at this restaurant is a philosophical failing. My order came out wrong and the dish I ordered arrived cold in the middle. By that point the entire interaction had become so uncomfortable that correcting anything felt like more trouble than it was worth. The most surreal part is that the manager/server's demeanor softened only when I was leaving, which made the whole experience feel less like hospitality and more like some strange social power exercise. I genuinely wanted to like this place -- but this was one of the most unwelcoming, lackluster dining experiences I've had in San Francisco. read more

I came to Mattina for dinner with two of my girl friends - they have a "Ladies Night" menu on Tuesday which is so cute! The deal is a spritz and flatbread (3 options) for $22. Since there were three of us, we tried each of the flatbreads. I liked the mushroom and prosciutto ones. I would not recommend the cauliflower caesar salad one - it sounded interesting, but it was so hard to eat because the lettuce was so big (not sure why they didn't chop it up some more), and there was also no sauce so ate really dry. We were still hungry, so ordered the Lumache pasta which was really good! I loved the creamy sauce. I loved the ambiance, it got super lively after 7ish and it was completely packed on Tuesday night! We had made a reservation through Resy, but the restaurant was really quiet on a Saturday night between 5:30 to 630 Started the meal with a wonderful glass of Sangiovese. The server recommended their new Piadina which was a thin but fluffy milk, bun bread with crisp edges and a sliver of cheese and mashed potato inside. It was delightful. It seems that they changed their menu pretty frequently since she said it was their first night serving it. We also had a beets and octopus small plates came with small chopped slivers of octopus yellow beets, along with the red cabbage side that was cooked and pickled. Both were delicious. We had a hard time deciding which pass again since they all seemed intriguing, the one we ended up getting was the maltagliati which was amazing with oat pasta and beer braised chicken . It was flavorful and addictive without being too heavy of a dish. Went for a birthday dinner. They have a nice selection of pasta and drinks. I had the Arancini. Sorry but looked like little turds. The rice was just ok, needed more flavor. Then the Mafaldine pasta made of spinach with "bolognese deluxe". It was tasty, a little salty but still good. What I didn't like: The door. It was freezing and I don't know how many times I had to paise my meal and stand up to close the door. They have to fix it or put something between the tables and the door to stop the cold from outside. The Tiramisù. This is an American version. It had sea salt. Really? First time in my life I had this dessert with sea salt. Terrible. A botton layer of hard chocolate which was unexpected. Didn't mind but the cookie under that chocolate had also salt. I don't like salt in desserts. Then the mascarpone cream. It wasn't mascarpone. Tasted like vanilla pudding. Super sweet dessert. I can say it was the worst Tiramisù I had in my life. If you're going to play with this is totally fine, but you have to put on the menu it is an American twist. Service was slow but on was a Saturday night. The restroom was clean and pretty with that flower wallpaper. Liked the soap. Sorry but this place is not for me. One right after the next so wasn't as enjoyable for 2 people sharing everything. 2 pastas are not pictured one was very good, the ravioli! Came here for their neighborhood nights special menu which includes a bruschetta, main, and dessert for $45 per person. The ambiance is cute and cozy with a nice neighborhood cafe vibe. For bruschetta we got the ricotta & mushroom and pea & mint w/horseradish toasts. The bruschettas were both good but I found the mushroom one to be a bit too salty and acidic and preferred the light and herby pea & mint bruschetta. We shared the pappardelle and tagliatelle for mains and I really like the tagliatelle with marsala mushrooms and lot of parm. The pappardelle was good as well and I enjoyed the lamb cheek but just wished there was more protein. Dessert was a yummy semifreddo strawberry pie. Overall the pastas were yummy but I thought the flavors lacked depth and with so many great Italian spots in the city, I would probably go elsewhere for Italian. I also thought the pasta itself was a bit overcooked. The neighborhood nights marketing is fun but really it's not a great deal given the usual prices of the dishes. I had finished my errands in Pac Heights early and decided to reward myself with breakfast. I remembered wanting to try Martina, so this was the perfect opportunity. I got the eggs al forno and it was pretty yummy. The toma cheese added decadence with the rich yolk, which was just set. And the charred Brussels sprouts added smokiness and a crispy texture. The bread was perfectly toasted and rounded out the dish. Service was okay. They may have been short staffed that morning, though there was at most 2 other parties during my time there. One gentleman couldn't wait to place his order any further and left. I didn't wait that long for my order. Though, I had to look for my own utensils. Interestingly, despite the restaurant being empty with no lines, a party who was waiting on one more person wasn't allowed to be seated. They had to wait in the cafe area. So this place is pretty strict with its seating policy. As for the decor, it's very calming with its natural tones. I was in the cafe area where there was a lot of indirect light. It gets darker further in. I'd like to come back for their pre fixe dinner menu. read more

I was told it would take a few minutes to come out, but it was more like 15, but I didn't mind too much since I was reading and enjoying the ambiance while sitting at the window bar. Perfect spot for people-watching! The coffee cake was delicious and warm - it has a delightful fruity (apple?) component on the bottom layer, and a yummy crumble on top. Came here for their special Thursday menu that we saw online! When we first got sad, we weren't given the special menu, but upon request we were brought the menu with a $35 and $45 option. I chose the $35 option and was able to select from a salad/warm starter and a pasta dish. It also came with the milk bread. Honestly, the milk bread was absolutely delicious. The salad was quite nice too and a good sized portion and the pasta was nice as well. I wouldn't say it was the most standout pasta I've ever had, but I loved that there were a lot of vegetarian options to choose from from a creamy mushroom to this delicious tomato and corn ravioli of sort. The hostess was a bit snotty about it when we showed up without one, despite several empty tables when we arrived and still plenty when we left. They did eventually agree to seat us at the counter. I had to ask for water and ice about four times, but hey, persistence paid off and hydration was eventually achieved. The prix fixe is a solid deal, but the menu changes often, so try not to get your heart too set on anything specific. The appetizer course is your choice of bruschetta from about three or four options. Then comes a pasta (or fish) dish, followed by dessert--which on our night was strawberry gelato. Sadly, the poor kitchen staff was battling to scoop it because it was rock solid. Maybe a gentle pre-scoop warm-up next time? What a great spot near Fillmore! I attended a holiday dinner last night here at Mattina with a group of 15 people. It can be hard to find a restaurant to accommodate such a large group, and this restaurant is classy and comfortable. The acoustics in the space made it very loud, but our group was also quite large, so I'm not sure if that's an issue normally. For starters, we tried the little gem salad, arugula salad, brussel sprouts, arancini, and meatballs. The brussel sprouts were delicious. Additionally, the pasta options were creative, unique and fun. We ordered the bucatini, tagliatelle, lumache, and maltagliati. I enjoyed the bucatini most. The maltagliati was interesting but reminded me of chicken noodle soup minus the broth, so I wouldn't order that again. For dessert, we ordered the pecan pie and cranberry crisp. The pecan pie was amazing and I would order that again. The crisp was a bit too tart for my taste. I am a non-drinker, so appreciated that they had a few mocktails and other low ABV options for folks. The rotate their menu seasonally, which keeps things fresh and fun. But luckily even on a Friday night, it was easy to get a table for two. They serve cal-italian inspired food, and boasts a wide variety of options. We got a mix of apps and pastas as we meant business, love trying the different pastas of SF: 3.5/5 Arancini was good with a salsa rossa sauce that was which had the consistency of chipotle aoili and was giving me those vibes, but the arancini was nothing too special. 4/5 Pea and mint bruschetta was unique and I did like the bread a lot, however it was slightly burnt on the edges. But their bruschetta was a highlight for sure. 2/5 Box cut spaghetti was too salty and creamy to really thoroughly enjoy. I felt like it was a wasted opportunity to have some taste really good, and not sure if I noticed anything special about the pasta. 4.5/5 Lumache was the best part of the meal with creamy tomato sauce and perfectly cooked pasta. The breadcrumbs were a tad bit too much and could have had less of it to make a bigger impact on the dish. I just didn't think this place met the hype after having this place bookmarked for a while. Was in the area and had our dog with us and luckily found this dog friendly place! They even had a dog friendly indoor space! We ordered the buccatini, tagliatelle, maple chili brussel sprouts, pasta pie, mushroom latte and lurisia chinotto. Everything was delicious and service was great. Modern Italian with California twist. We enjoyed the radicchio and orange salad, beet and octopus, lamb skewer, and the corone pasta, plus two cocktails. The cocktails were mediocre, but the food was very good. Salad was a bit overdressed but portion was large. Beet and octopus was pretty good. The stars were the lamb skewer and the corone pasta. The lamb skewer had a lot of flavor and the right amount of fat versus char. The pasta was a really interesting shape (it's basically one piece of pasta in a spiral with filling). Definitely recommend these two items. The chocolate cake for dessert was also very good! Indoor and outdoor seating. Indoor has tables as well as counter seating by the bar and the open kitchen. Yet another delicious Italian restaurant in the city. Mattina has a beautiful and aesthetic interior, plenty of dining tables and bar seating for any occasion. While for the most part we enjoyed the meal, there were a few things to comment on. The food was overall flavorful but the pasta dishes were inconsistently seasoned and cooked. A few of the pasta entrees my party ordered were either too salty or overcooked. In terms of service, the man at the front-of-house was very polite and accommodating. Our waitress on the other hand seemed absent, rushed, and frantic. To be fair, they seemed understaffed for a busy Friday night. I noticed that the front-of-house was also helping bus tables. Visited on a Saturday afternoon and was able to be seated upon arrival. There was one person serving and taking orders for every table. Considering the interior is more on the intimate side, they did their best serving everyone as quick as possible. The menu is very straight forward. I'm not the most knowledgeable about pasta names so I had to use Google for a visual reference, but I heavily used the descriptions to decide what to order. Grilled octopus 3.5/5 - grilled so tender, I think could have been improved by some acidity or salt. Could've just had a little more salt or lemon wedge on the side, would've made it a 4-5! Fall squash and kale 2/5 - unfortunately too bland (and I cook blandly at home). We took the squash and dipped it in the oil and juice from the grilled octopus to add more umami lol MUSHROOM TAGLIATELLE 5/5 - MUAH. This was both of our favorite.
