Pastrami on rye
Brian G.

I got the pastrami on rye here and thought the rye bread was good and had a strong flavor. However the pastrami was not tender or sliced thin enough and I could not bite through the meat without pulling out big chunks from the sandwich. The flavor of the pastrami is fine. They put a pickle in the takeout box that had juices seep into the bread making it soggy. For almost $30, this was not worth it at all.

We finally gave Super Mensch a try for dinner. There was a cancellation so we got a 6pm table for two in the parklet. It was cozy and the music was vibing in fun Friday way. When we sat down, there was a couple with a big dog blocking the way to get in. No one's fault-just pointing it out as super cozy seating. We ordered the latkes to share. I had the arugula salad. He had the pastrami sandwich for one. The latkes were little hash brown squares. They were tasty, but didn't give the greasy potato flavor or smell of Jewish comfort. They were more like hash brown blocks. The arugula salad didn't have enough flavor, but it was filling. He loved the pastrami with toasted bread and just the right amount of mustard. When we were eating another group sat on the other side of us with two big dogs. All three dogs watched us eat.

I am surprised this place doesn't have more stars. Parking is definitely horrible as it is anywhere in the Marina, but the inside is cute and they had a lot of seating. The food was overall pretty good, the watermelon feta salad had an interesting topping... I don't think it would order it again. The dips and the warm bread were definitely the star of the show! So yummy and warm. The servers was fast. Everyone was really nice. Would go back for sure

We stopped into this restaurant today for an early dinner/late lunch and had an overall good experience. We shared the dips, ordered multiple matzo ball soups, and had the latke. The matzo ball soup was very fresh and comforting, and the dips were flavorful and enjoyable. The latkes were decent, though after eating many latkes over Hanukkah, I'd personally rate them a B-. They didn't taste quite as fresh as I prefer, and the sauce was a bit skimpy. That said, I appreciated that they were served in a classic, at-home style with crème fraîche and caviar--exactly how I would make them myself, just a little more generously. Service was fine, and the food came out very quickly. We didn't order drinks since we're not drinkers, but when we walked by later, the place was packed and had a great vibe. Everyone seemed to be having fun, and it definitely feels like a positive addition to the neighborhood. The concept and ideas are strong, and I hope they continue to refine and settle into their rhythm. In a new Marina/Cow Hollow spot like this, it would have been nice to meet the owner or have someone stop by the table to say hello, but overall it's a place I'd be happy to revisit. I will give a four for now and hope they can freshen up the menu, maybe take a page from Orens or Hummus Bodega the reigning champions of Jewish foods in SF. I wish them the best of luck!

Very small, very loud, interesting use of space. Supposed to be a deli with a full bar. More like a bar with noshes. Clever use of names for cocktails and sandwiches. One would think that things like matzo ball soup and latkes would be stellar. The soup was tepid. Never been served soup not hot. Chicken broth was tasty. Matzo balls were fluffy and tasteless. It was a very small serving for the price. Was really cup of soup, not a bowl. Latkes tasted reheated from frozen with scant toppings. They were the size of silver dollar pancakes. Disappointing for Chanukah. The hot dog was a hot dog and pickle on a plate. Period. No slaw, no fries, no potato salad. There was nothing special about the fatuoche salad. Disappointed in lack of imagination. Even though we had a reservation we had to eat in half an hour as there next reservation was books got that long later. What about us? No heaters outside. Had higher expectations.

The first time we tried going here, they unfortunately ran out of pastrami (it was a late reservation so I don't blame them at all.) This time we made a reservation for a weekend morning to start our day off with some jewish deli classics. Staff was attentive and very accommodating, as I asked for mustard on the side and no fish roe on the latkes which they did without hesitation. That was much appreciated! Maybe an unpopular opinion, but I actually liked the reuben a lot better than the pastrami sandwich. Just better texture and flavor profile all around. But the all-star of the meal was the chocolate cake. So divine and indulgent! Reminded me of the iconic one from Matilda. Absolutely massive slice so be prepared to be eating cake for another day or two.

New Jewish Deli inspired restaurant with great food and fantastic cocktails! It's a cute cozy spot with limited seating inside (3 tables, a high top and counter seating) and outdoor seating + a covered parklet. I definitely recommend making a reservation ahead of time. It's easy to make one ahead of time through Open Table. As I was waiting to check in with the host at the stand, I overheard them having to turn away a party without a reservation. I picked a counter seat on my res since I only came with a party of 2. The cocktail menu is so fun! I'm not a big drinker but there were so many drinks I wanted to try. I ended up picking the Borscht cocktail and it was delicious. It had that earthy beet flavor with some sweetness. My friend had the pickle michelada which was made with pickle beer, it was very pickley. For food, we shared the latkes, the pastrami on rye, the house made bagel with lox, and a slide of chocolate cake. Everything was delicious! We especially enjoyed the latkes, the pastrami and the cake. The latkes were nice and crispy, they went well with the apple sauce and sour cream. The pastrami was tender and flavorful. The chocolate cake was very moist and chocolatey, you could easily split it with 3 people. We couldn't finish all the cake and took the rest home to enjoy later. Our server was also very nice and fun. I will definitely come back so I can try more things on the menu, especially their cocktails!

Halibut Crudo w/ sesame tuile, black vinaigrette, avocado, preserved lemon, schug ($18)

Guy: "What's good here?" Server: "The pastrami, it's like Katz's". Guy: *Looks at us and our pastrami sandwich* Guy: "No, I'm good, my body is my temple..." Damn, talk about making us feel like heffas. I like a thicccc stack and I've been finding excuses to go to The Marina/Cow Hollow for Komeya's matcha latte so here we are. From the Causwells' team, Lilah (AZN fusion) rebranded to Super Mensch and opened 9/24/25. It's a small place so rezzies are highly recommended. Indoor and outdoor seating. M E N U Modern takes on Jewish deli classics with deli, sweet+savory inspired cocktails (e.g. babka, borscht, and matzah ball). Everything is housemade. Full bar. 6% sf mandate. F O O D * Halibut Crudo w/ sesame tuile, black vinaigrette, avocado, preserved lemon, schug ($18): https://tinyurl.com/5xu4xjbj Fresh, mild slices of halibut with strong, punchy flavors (schug, Yemeni hot sauce was not spicy) mellowed out by the buttery ripen avocado. The tuile provides a nice crunchy contrast to the soft fish. * The Super Mensch: Giant pastrami on rye, spicy brown mustard ($39): https://tinyurl.com/44v34ysa My picture doesn't do the pastrami justice. I know it looks dry AF from the lighting but it was juicy, well-marbled, and fatty, in a good way (not too salty). A thiccc stack in between soft rye bread. Unfortunately, the bread lacked structural integrity with the bottom slice arriving soggy and breaking apart when picking up. It became a fork and knife sandwich. Served with a large pickle but it was hella salty. While a delicious sandwich to share, they could have included a scoop of coleslaw or potato salad for $39. * Potato Salad w/ herbs, sesame, wild salmon roe ($10): https://tinyurl.com/yksye7vp Sadly, they were out of the latkes by 12 pm (opens at 11 am) so we went with this. Good creamy tang and burst of salty umami from the roe but the potatoes were underdone, on the hard side. S E R V I C E Our server was warm, friendly, and attentive. Prompt food service. A M B I A N C E Modern with vintage touches. Three tables inside with counter seating. Two sidewalk tables and three tables in the parklet. P A R K I N G Very difficult street parking. Nearest garages: 2055 Chestnut and 3236 Pierce. Overall, it was a pretty solid meal AND a huge improvement over Lilah (IMO, the food and low abv cocktails there were not it). The steep pricing of their sandwiches makes Super Mensch prohibitive to go on the regular tho (total: $91.78 for 1 app, 1 sandwich, and 1 side).

What a vibe! I came here on Saturday with Kylie and Bobby. There were a few people outside and some other joined when we were eating but it was quite low key. The food was delicious. Matt helped us during our meal and he even let me try the pastrami before choosing because I always get confused between pastrami and corned beef. While there is no GF bread, we all still shared the latkes, Cole slaw, and potatoes. Loved the Sando but the matzah ball soup has nothing on my grandma Judy's. Will be back when I'm SF and loved the music, aesthetic, and all around energy.

First weekend of operation! We decided to check out the latest restaurant opening in our neighborhood as a last minute decision but went early around 5PM on a Saturday & were able to snag a spot at their communal table. I would recommend making reservations as they are very popular & it is a small restaurant. I had the egg cream cocktail to start & it tasted as an egg cream should & I couldn't taste the alcohol but I felt the buzz because I had an empty stomach. The sofa water is poured table side so the egg cream puffs up above the rim of the glass. It's garnished with 3 chocolate boba too. Very tasty cocktail. Being a native New Yorker, I'm familiar with Jewish delis. The latkes were pretty good & the salmon roe added the perfect amount of salt to the dish. The matzoh ball soup was delicious but the matzoh balls were a little more dense than I was accustomed to but still good. The watermelon salad was interesting because the feta cubes were as large as the watermelon cubes so we had a lot of cheese leftover. We were still feeling peckish & shared the hot dog on house made challah bun, which was very good. The huge chocolate cake was on display on the counter & looked so good that we had a slice for dessert. Yummy decadence! Service was friendly & helpful.

Black and white espresso martini, egg cream, chocolate cake

I was very intrigued by the concept and excited to check this place out. We came on a Friday at 5:30ish for a 5:45 reservation and were seated right away. The space is TINY but very cute. Our game plan here was pre-dinner drinks and apps. We got the matzah ball marg and borscht cocktail for round one, along with the za'atar chips, WAICL (chicken liver mousse on rye), and latkes. The beverage program is one of the most unique I've seen and both drinks were outstanding - very well balanced. The latkes were a must order! We were eyeing the chocolate cake and ended up deciding on a slice to share along with some dessert drinks. Round two included the black & white espresso martini and the egg cream, which had the seltzer poured in tableside for a nice presentation. The egg cream beat out the espresso martini, but both were good. The cake was HUGE - definitely easily split by a party of 3 or more. Service was friendly but not overbearing. Already thinking of coming back to try more!

Super Mensch is the real deal. Food delivers across the board, service was stellar, and it's such a nice vibe w the new. The latkes were varsity level! Crisp on the outside, soft inside, with house creme fraiche, salmon roe, and apple butter. Easily one of the best bites of the day. (Plus, latkes are square in 2025, who woulda thought?!) House-made bagel with lox was pulled off flawlessly. Bagel was dense and chewy (which I love), silky salmon, capers, onion, dill. Was really impressed they make a bagel of that caliber. We did the 5 dip platter: Hummus, roasted eggplant, cucumber labneh, honey bell pepper, and this incredible schug (I knew it as Zhoug). Warm sesame pita to scoop it all up. Could have made a meal out of this alone. I actually asked to buy a side of the schug to take home, so good. The pastrami on rye was stacked high and messy in the best way. Simple and reliable, exactly how you want it. I took half home and heated it up later, perfect late night bite on the couch. Also worth calling out the drinks. Their bar program looks so interesting, I'll come back just to try a few. The bagel and lox martini might be the most creative cocktail I've seen in a while. Super Mensch nails tradition with just enough flair. Strong addition to the neighborhood. Already planning my next visit.

Got seated quickly on a Saturday at 12 which is always great. Ordered the pastrami sandwich - I would give it a 7/10. Not the best pastrami sandwich compared to other deli shops in the city, but it was decent. The latkes were delicious - perfectly cooked and enjoyable, would give this a solid 9/10! Would definitely come back just to order the latkes.

After a park day at the Presidio, we wanted to move the party and we decided on Bar Darling. It was a Saturday afternoon and it was jam packed. Luckily we were able to get some space in the alley way for us to order drinks from our server. We've been on a Friday around 5pm on another day, it wasn't as busy, so definitely a great place to start and maybe end the night. In a time where craft cocktails have gotten really expensive, Bar Darling offers craft cocktails (their signature cocktails) all for $14 each. If you know Peacekeeper, you know there's a lot of thought and imagination that goes into their drinks and it definitely shows here. My favorites were the Mama J (tequila based) and the Jaji (mezcal based). The aesthetic and vibes of this place is 10/10. Definitely great for a group of friends and/or date night!

I'll note that the promotional photos online give a somewhat misleading impression of the ambiance. The actual interior is considerably more modest and utilitarian than advertised. We ended up seated outdoors beneath one of those industrial heat lamps, which was blasting uncomfortably hot air until our server kindly switched it off at our request. That said, the service was efficient and attentive. Our drinks arrived promptly despite the crowd, and the staff managed the busy room well. Nothing particularly memorable about the experience, but perfectly adequate for a casual evening out. A solid four out of five stars.
