I was hesitant about going through with our Monday night Wildflower reservations because reviews regarding impatient service gave me some pause. I'm glad we looked past them and gave Wildflower a try. Genuinely friendly and thorough service, innovative menu, and remarkable execution. Atmosphere perfect for a date night - fun quirky details all around the interior.
Tracy was our host, but popped in here and there to clear our table and send some dishes our way. We were lucky to have Lola as a server. They don't offer a paper menu, only a QR code you access on your phone. But if you have any questions at all, the servers are well-equipped with knowledge about the various menu items, cocktails, and meads.
For drinks, we had:
* Frontier Fog cocktail ($15): Gin-based with earl gray and lavender. Can't go wrong here. They use shaved ice made from the frozen cocktail. I think it's made kind of similarly to a milk punch, using lemon and milk to clarify the cocktail. It came in a very charming teacup. So tasty!
* Toasted Caramel mead ($19): She recommended this one over the Chamomile once she heard that Steven didn't have a huge sweet tooth. He was appreciative of this rec since this mead ended up having great depth to it.
* The Colorado Sky cocktail ($15)
* Gimme Thyme cocktail ($15): Pretty strong, but not overt about it.
For our meal, they started us off with a complimentary small bite: tomatillo with corvina. Spicy and delicious! We were considering the Wildflower Focaccia but figured it would be too much, so decided against ordering it. Also thought about the Hickory Watermelon and the Kabocha Mezzaluna (sounded like an incredible autumn dish but perhaps too heavy). We mulled over the corvina dish because of how tasty the small bite had been, but Lola advised us to go for the NY strip steak based on the other dishes we were ordering.
In the end, we settled on the following:
* Lamb tart ($21): The tartare sits on a fantastic crust, with a phenomenal meringue topping. Probably one of the better tartares I've had. Contrasting ideas of tart (breakfast/dessert) and tartare (usually a dinner thing?), very interesting combo. Tomato-forward, which I liked.
* Denver meat and cheese ($28): What a fun board! The Berkshire spicy coppa was perfect. Triple cream blue cheese, so much fun. Didn't love the brigante, it was a little dry and most of the flavor was back-ended. There was SO MUCH piquillo chutney we didn't end up finishing it, but I wish I'd had room for it. Also can I mention this board came with their focaccia? That worked out well!
* Ricotta cavatelli ($26): This came with a house-made burrata snow that was shaved and frozen? You're supposed to mix it in to melt it into the sauce. Rosemary breadcrumbs seemed a little too salty and overwhelmed the rest of the dish. Lots of flavor here. I liked the broccolini texture. I wish the burrata had been a normal creamy blob to counter the breadcrumbs.
* NY Strip Steak: This came with a mole verde boasting 27 ingredients and cooked over a 2-week period. It was kind of a hard sell for my fiancé since he's not a mole fan, but as soon as we tasted it, the two of us just looked at each other in shock. SO GOOD. It felt like not enough meat for the mole verde but let's be real, we finished off that mole like it was a soup. It comes with a blue corn tortilla served pani puri pastry style, gigante bean puree sitting inside? Super surprising. The puree texture is exquisite and goes a long way. Would absolutely order again if it's still on the menu when we're back next.
* Wildflower Honey Semifreddo ($13): We got this one on Lola's recommendation and loved it. This dessert is reminiscent of an escalated honey bunches of oats. Marsala foam?? I haven't had honey brittle this thin and it works perfectly.
We were one of the last parties to leave the restaurant, but didn't feel rushed at all. We'll absolutely be making another reservation whenever we're next in Denver. read more
