Went in and sat at the bar, figuring we would have a drink and order take out, as no one (not a single patron or staff) was masked, despite governor's order requiring it. Now, I understand you can't eat with a mask, but the staff is required be masked, yet were not. Neither the hostess nor the bartender acknowledged us as we sat there for about 10 minutes, though were the only people at the bar! The tender was busy making drinks for the diners, but could at the very least have greeted us and said "I'll be with you soon" or something like that. He conspicuously avoided eye contact and after 10 minutes of being ignored, we asked a bus boy for a menu so that we might place a take out order. He was pleasant and handed us the menus, but when the bartender saw this he said rather gruffly "we don't do takeout". We feel like we were actually shunned for wearing a mask in their establishment, during a pandemic, when it is required by law. So, we left. And won't be back. Its quite clear they don't care. read more

Great steaks and even better salad dressings homemade. This cozy dinner club atmosphere helps you enjoy a fine dining experience with a large group or with that special someone. Steaks are cooked to your request. The only disappointment you'll experience here is that your meal is done. I highly recommend this place and make sure you get your picture taken with the white stag in front of the restaurant. read more

Meh. That about sums up the food from sides to main course. The tenderloin needed seasoning of some variety; the onions and mushrooms we had to go with it were burned, badly. The rolls were ok, kind of solid though. Salad sucked, as usual. Their dressings are great, but they don't save the sad wedge you get. Some add ins would have been great. Save your money, grill your own. read more

We come up north about 10 times per year. We have driven past White Stag Inn every time, and always wanted to try it. We went there Sat., June 2, 2012. We wanted to share a steak, potato, and salad. The waitress said that would be fine, and brought us a bowl with two chunks of head lettuce, about 1/2 head, and three rolls. When she brought our dinner, she told us that since I had shared my husband's salad, the "manager" said she'd have to charge me for an extra salad. When the bill came, we were charged $7. for the extra 1/4 of a head of lettuce. We won't be back. read more

What has happened to one of the jewels of the Northwoods? Steaks are now served on plastic plates. Shrimp are now served on plastic plates. Butter for shrimp isn't served with butter over a candle but in a plastic container like the ones you put catsup in at McDonalds. The steak and shrimp are not even warm when you begin to eat. I can only imagine Louis Senior is rolling over in his grave!!!!! read more

I have had incredible steaks all over the world and this is still my favorite place. The homemade dressing and cottage cheese and chives are added bonuses. The staff are friendly and so are the owners. The ambiance is very rustic and cozy. This is my happy place. Get the Ribeye MR "Dave's Way" and you will find steak nirvana. read more

Went here for the first time. They don't take reservations and remind you with a snide sign at the door. They don't split checks and remind you with another sign at the door. I didn't think this was a thing anymore, what with computers and all. Steak was very good. the only starch is a baked potato. Wedge salad with homemade dressings was good but would like to see some kind of toppings or options. Price point was quite high given the lack of options and compared to area competition. They lose stars for price, sarcasm and failure to be in the computer age. Will not return unless suggested by others for a group meal. read more

Wow! We were looking for a good place to grab a steak dinner on our last night of vacation. This place was awesome. Simple menu and the food was amazing. Perfectly cooked (med rare) filet and the salad, rolls and baked potato were great too. Can't wait to go back next time we're in the area. read more

But for the bartender who was full of himself, I had a nice experience, and due to him, they lost a star. If you go early, take note: they say they open at 4:30, but actually they don't start seating until 5pm. Might not seem like a big deal except when you consider that a lot of fun activities take place in the north woods after dinner just before sunset. The chef prepared my steak beautifully. They also have three wonderful home made salad dressings that are spiced in such a way that you can enjoy all three in your salad, or they stand alone very nicely as well. The down side is that they only offer iceberg lettuce, which is unfortunate in a day and age where there are so many wonderful choices of salad greens which could shine with their prepared dressings. Lots of competition in this region, I think I'll stick to some of the area's other culinary jewels. read more

I am a HUGE steak lover. I've eaten steak at hundreds of restaurants, including that very "best" steak restaurants, and the best steaks I've ever had are at the White Stag. In full fairness and disclosure, I probably am a at least a little biased as I've been coming here each summer since I was a little girl, and "going to the Stag" has years of wonderful vacation memories associated with the experience, but I can say that despite the idea of the White stag getting my mouth watering in January, I've never once been disappointed by my actual meal, even after driving over an hour from our cottage to get there. I personally love the Ribeye, medium rare (and it's a real medium rare), with extra onions and mushrooms. I also love the iceberg lettuce salad with the three mixed dressings, and the baked potatoes with the cottage cheese-sour cream mixture are heavenly. I will say it is a restaurant with a few quirks - it's not exactly elegant (the decor is a bit odd with wood paneling, many antlers, and a lot of faux masters - kind of an ersatz German hunting lodge?), it's kinda of in the middle of nowhere, and the menu basically just focus on steask with a few other choices (though I've been told the chicken and shrimp are good although why anyone would try those when the staesk are so good I have no idea). But the food I would honestly put up against the best anywhere, and isn't that what you're going for anyway? read more

Have been coming for years. Wedge lettuce/salad, haddock are outstanding, drinks are cheap. Service is on par for the price. Like any place up here, don't expect speedy meals on holidays (like a few reviewers complained about -- come on, really?). To give 1 star because of 1 slow experience after 30 years of good food/service isn't fair. read more

We were hungry and some distance from the Twin cities so stopped here. the usual disgusting Wisconsin restaurant. Salad is a hunk of lettuce with some horrible dressings brought to the table. the prime rib was served swimming in some liquid as is the norm in Wisconsin with no place to dump the crap out. Wish McDonalds was in these rural areas.A good idea is to pack a lunch when visiting Wisconsin even though Door county has some passable food(due to the number of Chicago people who visit no doubt) read more

Great traditional northwoods super club. Love it every time I go. The salad dressing are made in house and delicious. You can even buy some to take home! read more

We were burned and so was some of my food! The White Stag Inn in Sugar Camp was always our "special" dinner go to place. BUT Friday night they happened to be training a new chef - not my problem but I paid the price. My steak was ordered medium and it came almost raw. Okay they can cook it some more but hey, onions burned black. Nope that is not good! Our waitress was good and the drinks good and fair price...dinner was very very disappointing. Our meal was very pricey and either under cooked or burned. Yes we did tell our waitress but there was not any compensation for this. Had anyone asked as we were leaving how it was - we would have told them but the door area was empty. We won't be coming back or recommending it to anyone and we've been going there for 40 years. If they were training a new chef...the senior chef should have been overseeing what he was doing...not out in the diningroom talking with friends or sitting at the bar. Really disappointed in this special night out. read more

Ive had better food in the area for less money. I had the pork chops and my wife had the shrimp. I thought the place was a little pricey. I mean ...you get a lot of food but I wasn't impressed by the price point vs the value. I wouldn't go back! read more

I would not even give it one star if I didn't have to!!!! Worst place I have eaten at in years!!! Salad sucks and the steak is....... well put it this way, I'll had better steaks at Ponderosa streak house!!! Poor service, and way over priced for poor quality food read more

Salad should never just be a head of lettuce. Literally not even cut up, nothing else with it. Was hoping that would mean the steak would be amazing. 31 for a filet mignon and I've honestly had better steak at Applebees. 5 dollars for grilled onions and they were burnt. Rolls were hard too. Left thinking the best part of the meal was the butter. Service was not great either. Only giving this a two because I might be biased since I live in Madison now, maybe this is good for the Rhinelander area (disclaimer, I did grow up here). Also, pretty unanimous agreement among our group that everything ordered was not good, especially for that price. I didn't even want my leftovers. read more

Went there for a special dinner. We were served by a server who just started and there was nobody over seeing him. At these prices I expect a seasoned waiter. Not someone who doesn't know what they're doing He didn't know anything about the wine options. He said "well I'm only 18 years old and I don't know anything about wine". I finally had to go to the bar to ask about their available bottles of wine and the manager assisted me. Thank goodness. We ordered fillets and they were very good and done according to our wishes. I had requested blue cheese on my steak and the waiter did not give it to me. When I brought it to his attention he said that he could get it for me; it's in the refrigerator. I said I did not want cold blue cheese, I wanted it melted on the steak and he said "oh I've never had anybody request that before so I didn't know how to put that order through." All in all we had a good dinner however the service left a lot to be desired. If you go be sure to ask for a seasoned waiter. Not someone who's just learning how to serve. It ruins the dinner. When I brought this up to the manager he said "he's new and he's a work in progress." if that's the case then I don't expect to pay the same price as for someone who knows how to serve. read more

This was a wonderful dining experience. The north woods ambiance, the cocktails and the food was KILLER! We all got the En Brochette. Perfectly cooked. We also ordered mushrooms. One order feeds two or more. The potato topper was really tasty, as was the wedge salad and the homemade dressings they bring to the table. read more

We went to the White Stag Inn for our 22nd wedding anniversary. I look forward to the icy wedge of lettuce with the Russian dressing and blue cheese crumbles. I also got my personal favorite the smoked pork chop, which was delicious. One glitch at the time we went which was early was that they had forgotten to cook the baked potatoes, so they were not available during our meal. The service was quick and very good. I will continue to return to the White Stag Inn as it is always good food and service. read more

I went here with my family when they were in town visiting. We had a group of 7 and arrived a few minutes apart. They would not seat us until we all arrived. The waitress was rude to us the whole night. It took over a half an hour just to get our beverages served to us. The menu does not have alot to choose from and expensive. We did not like the salad either. A huge wedge of lettuce with a choice of 3 home made not so good salad dressings. Yuck. And no other veggies with the salad. No choice of soup...no choice of potato...you can only have a baked potato. We were the most unhappy about how we were treated by the waitress. She was rude and made us feel like we were an inconvenience to her. We will not go back. There are plenty of supper clubs with friendly staff and better menues that will get our business instead. read more

Loved how food was served on a grill to table. Only potato is baked. Awesome place would recommend

Staple of the Northwoods, Great Simple Menu. They are always open, while on the pricier side I can't say the few times I go every year are anything but great experiences. read more

After listening to many people rave about the "stag", my wife and I decided to give it a try....very dissapointing. my wife had the shrimp and although they were a nice size the lack of seasoning and overall blandness was impossible to get over. i had the porkchops and was shocked to recieve them burnt dry. pork absolutely cannot be overcooked and my chops were crispy. the salad is a head of lettuce cut into wedges (borring) however the dressing were the highlight of the meal. in our opinion this restaraunt is completely overrated and we will not return. read more

Good food and great atmosphere. First time there, but will be back again. Limited menu true, but enough for everyone I think. Most of us had steak, but some had the grilled shrimp. All enjoyed their meals. Also the staff is extremely nice. read more

Our group of nine of us took a long five to six our drive for a snowmobiling weekend at Eagle River WI. We arrived with a big appetite, so we decided to eat at White Stag. A place that was highly recommended turned into a disappointing experience ever! The waitress was straight to the point in an obvious confusing way. We couldn't tell if this was her personality or just didn't want to serve us. After a long five to six hour drive we chose this place to eat. We arrived, were seated, beverage order was taken and then brought. Just like that, no introduction (not even her name) or "hey guys how are you", or "Is this your first time here" no smile and no kind of waitress customer conversation. She brought over the lettuce and rolls and disappeared until we were ready to order. Again she came took our order and disappeared until our order was ready. After she passed out our order, there was no " does everything look good" or can I get you anything else" and the most consideration thing to say after serving a meal " Enjoy". Well as she disappeared one of the wives had ordered the chicken (daves way) and it came back raw. Wellll! the waitress was no where to be found that we not only had to wait for our waitress but we had to ask another waitress for her. She came over to our table and when she was told about the chicken not being fully cooked, there was no " im sorry would you like me to throw this back on the grill" or can I offer you something else" or let me take care of that 20.00 bottle of wine you just ordered" no kind of accommodation, instead she snatched the plate from her hand (not hard enough to have the chicken fall off her plate, but obvious enough to know she was highly bothered). She didnt even bring the plate back, the Chef did and with no sympathy! She did not check on us and when she did it was as if she was in a hurry. Someone in our party was drinking a diet coke and yes requested a refill when ever she popped up, Come to find out there is a 2.00 refill and she did not even bother to let us know. We had to endure this inconvenience while eating our over priced average meal. When we got our check, a couple in our party notice there was an extra meal put on their ticket, when the this was addressed to the waitress, she snatched the check out of his hand, in a very disrespectful way. We were shocked at all that we were experiencing. She brought it back and placed it on the table. Well the raw then fully cooked chicken was not touched. She totally lost her appetite and yet was still charged. She went to explain the raw chicken situation to the older man behind the bar who claimed to half owner and he tried to justify it by explaining that the chicken is boiled then grilled process. No "im sorry for the inconvience" or " ill take care of that". He called the waitress over by her name CINDY, and asked her to take care of it which then CINDY snatched the check out of his hand!! Our jaws dropped, because now there was no holding back her dislike for our group. Her rudeness was brought to the attention of the half owner and he tried to justify it by saying "CINDY has been here for twenty-eight years". As if that makes it okay to act prejudice. Eight of the nine people sitting at that table are Latino, one of the wives is Caucasian married to a Latino. Each and everyone at that table are professionals have careers that sit in the forefront of Customer Service. i watched as she attended to other Caucasian customers and it was pleasant and accommodating, which made it dreadful to watch. The Food and Price are not worth this disrespectful service. Now if the food was great, I would give credit for the food, However in this case it goes hand in hand. Like I said, the food is average and the service was horrible.. read more

Wonderful! Delicious food and terrific service! We celebrated an early Thanksgiving in the Northwoods over Columbus Day Weekend and indulged in a fantastic dinner at The White Stag. It has been a family favorite for 30+ years. On this particular visit we had (1) 7 year-old, (2) 2 year-olds, and (7) adults in our party. Since we were eating out with a few youngsters, we arrived right at 5pm and were immediately seated in one of the front dining rooms (which they were kind enough to dedicate solely to our large group.) Three adults ordered the haddock, two adults chose the pork chops (the house special), and two had the en brochette, with a couple orders of mushrooms and onions shared between the table. All entrées were terrific- everyone cleaned their plates! We also appreciated that they allowed us to share our meals with the kids, so they could sample the different dishes without needing to order them a big meal. Between the wedge salad, baked potato, and fresh bread, our large group left full and happy. As one of our family members noted, "Now this is the authentic Northwoods dining experience!" Will we be back? Definitely! read more
