This place is old, but it's fantastic!!! You order your protein...they bring a salad, bread, & baked potato for each person. That's it! Your protein is cooked over a fire, right in the dining area! They serve your protein on a sizzling rolling tray to your table, and will put melted butter on your steaks upon request. The service is unbelievable, they brought plenty of everything and our drinks were never empty. It's casual and it's very old school...go! You won't be sorry!

The White Stag is a well known northwoods institution. I had the filet-mignon, which was very juicy and delicious. This was easily the best steak I've ever had. My meal was complimented with a refreshing Old Fashioned. The service was just as great as the food!

Grilled catfish, haddock and Ribeye steak.

Great service and thoughtfully prepared entrees for our group of four. Really enjoyed the classic ambiance. Their chargrilled steaks and fish were awesome.

Bermuda, onions, dip for the potatoes, which is whipped cottage cheese and chives. Very delicious.

First time trying White Stag Inn. Doors open at 4Pm, they start seating at 4:30. Easy to follow menu, lots of wonderful choices. Started out with a wedge salad with three different dressings and you can add blue cheese crumbles for two people extra. The entrées are prepared on a charcoal lit grill in the middle of the restaurant, which I thought was very intriguing. Food was definitely flavorful and cooked to perfection. Will definitely be back. The bartender was super nice and made really good old-fashioneds

This is a restaurant we go to as a family once a year around the Fourth of July (and based on the license plates in the parking lot, we aren't the only out of towners). Normally the food gets the job done and the service good. I am not sure what happened recently but a lot has been lost this year. We had a party of 13 that they split into two tables as they had another large party to seat. No problem. Rye old fashioned sour was pretty good. Wait staff was hustling as best as they could. However, should have noted a problem when we didn't place an order until 45 minutes in. Salad (lettuce) arrived at 1 hour 15 minutes. Mains didn't come until 2 hours after we sat down. Went to the manager who responded "I understand but you need to understand we sat 150 people at once." A thought: if you are going to post a sign outside your restaurant about not taking reservations, don't seat the place at once and bury your kitchen! Not even an apology, an offer to comp anything, or even acknowledging this was not practice they endorse. To cap it, I ordered a half chicken Daves way that was cooked to hell and back, and could only manage the dark meat before I gave up. Im sure this place survives on locals who get preferential treatment and annual visitors who have months to forget sins and come back the next year to maintain tradition. If you aren't in either of these camps, find somewhere else that tries harder.

Steaks were amazing! Cooked right where you can watch- the chef is on pointe. Salad always served with their 3 signature dressings. Baked potatoes with butter and their version of "sour cream"-cottage cheese with chives. Don't knock it until you try it! A timeless supper club with a great Old Fashioned drink.

    Simple, one page menu

This is my second visit to the iconic White Stag. We arrived just before seating time, so I had a chance to truly appreciate the history inside the building. We were seated near the chef's area, which was so much fun to watch throughout our meal. Our waitress was a bit lackluster in terms of personality and service, never refilled our waters but did check on us a couple of times. Once you are seated you are served warm rolls and a wedge of iceberg lettuce. There are three dressing to choose from, all delicious but I would have preferred a creamy option in place of one. My bf and I split a porterhouse steak and the filet of haddock. We added Bermuda onions, mushrooms, and blue cheese. The onions were plentiful, wonderfully grilled and still had a good crunch. The mushrooms were tasty but we were not given many. The steak was cooked to medium rare perfection but lacked seasoning. Luckily I had some leftover blue cheese to use as a topping. The haddock was flaky but a little disappointing in flavor for all of the good things I've heard. The highlight for me was the POTATO topping! Honestly, changed my life in how simple but delicious it was. I now make this at home regularly! I'd recommend this place for its old fashioned atmosphere, but don't expect the best meal of your life.

It was pretty good, but disappointed that it wasn't a true beef wellington. My fiance ordered the 'crab stuffed haddock'. My fiance told the owner that his fish tasted fishy, he asked bluntly if he wanted anything else. No apology. My fiance then ordered the cornish hen. Our waitress brought back a half cooked cornish hen (no wild rice or vegies that was described on the menu) and kinda plopped it on the table. We felt they weren't happy that we didn't approve of their crappy fish. We didn't appreciate their attitude at all! The positive: their bartender was nice and made a good old fashioned.

As with many cases this season they were very short staffed and trying to offer good service to those that had made reservations. Our server had several tables including one of 16 people. I can't believe how good the service ended up being with Karen our waitress. As a seasoned vet in this Industry she was on top of everything. Additionally the food was Breyer than I had hoped for. We all started with the salad bar which was clean and organized. They did end up running out of ranch dressing which was a disappointment but that was the only thing that fell short the entire evening. After the salads the four of us has the French onion soup which was better than most I've had. This was followed by our main course. Two of us has the 10 oz. Fillets, on had the 16oz ribeye and lastly one liver and onions. All the steaks were fabulous and the liver was also good from what I hear. There was no rushing, Karen our server timed out servings perfectly and the evening turned out spectacular. A big kudos to the Manager for getting us in. This will be a part of our rotation moving forward. Don't forget to make reservations!

While not as chic as a fine dining establishment in a metropolitan area like Milwaukee, Madison, Chicago or New York, it's as classy as it gets north of highway eight. We made a reservation for a Saturday evening - they could have accommodated us as walk-ins (and walk-ins are welcome) but I'd err on calling for a reservation and securing a table, especially on a popular day of the week. With a reservation we were promptly seated and waited on. I started with a dry martini and my wife picked a wine from a pretty decent wine list. It was a great martini--see my photos. Many of the items on the menu are what one would expect, but there were a few that piqued my interest, in particular the schnitzel. As a frequent visitor to the Austrian Tirol and Bavaria, I had to give it a try. My wife opted for salmon. The entrees included soup or salad. I went with lobster bisque and my wife went with chicken noodle soup. The bisque was rich and flavorful. Though the bread stick was out of a box as opposed to baked in house, it was an acceptable accompaniment to the soup. As for the entree, the schnitzel was prepared the way I like it--pan fried and not deep fried. With a properly breaded, seasoned and crispy crust, the pork itself was perfectly cooked. I could eat a schnitzel like this every day! The Spätzle was fine and the sauce tasted good but it was a little thin. The red cabbage was definitely sour but lacked the sweetness necessary to balance the acid. I'd suggest that the chef check out the red cabbage recipe from Alinea which has an excellent balance of sweet and sour. And one more suggestion to mimic the schnitzel I've had in the Tirol and Bavaria, a dollop of sweet jelly to spread on the cutlet--preferably a white wine jelly fortified with herbs like rosemary. That said, the dish was great and I would order it again. I only took a bite of my wife's entree, but the hollandaise and salmon was good. She especially liked the kale. To end the evening we shared a dessert. My wife makes a DG tiramisu and we've had some great tiramisu's in Italy. This one was right up there, though the espresso soaked lady fingers were a bit weak. Nevertheless, as you can see from my photo, we demolished it. A nice grappa or Tirolian schnapps would have been the perfect finale but alas the bar was not that well stocked. All in all a decent dinner, a place I will return to in the future, and a great addition to the culinary scene in the region.

Everything we ordered was delicious, and I highly recommend a crock of their house made soups. I had the French onion and it was so good. For mains my husband ordered the steak tips with spaetzel, friends got the pasta, but the real star was the empress chicken! It was perfect! Also.. I would be a let down if I didn't tell you to order the cheese curds. Fried perfectly, light and crispy, not greasy.. and so so so good!
