This place is old, but it's fantastic!!! You order your protein...they bring a salad, bread, & baked potato for each person. That's it! Your protein is cooked over a fire, right in the dining area! They serve your protein on a sizzling rolling tray to your table, and will put melted butter on your steaks upon request. The service is unbelievable, they brought plenty of everything and our drinks were never empty. It's casual and it's very old school...go! You won't be sorry!

The White Stag is a well known northwoods institution. I had the filet-mignon, which was very juicy and delicious. This was easily the best steak I've ever had. My meal was complimented with a refreshing Old Fashioned. The service was just as great as the food!

Grilled catfish, haddock and Ribeye steak.

Great service and thoughtfully prepared entrees for our group of four. Really enjoyed the classic ambiance. Their chargrilled steaks and fish were awesome.

Bermuda, onions, dip for the potatoes, which is whipped cottage cheese and chives. Very delicious.

First time trying White Stag Inn. Doors open at 4Pm, they start seating at 4:30. Easy to follow menu, lots of wonderful choices. Started out with a wedge salad with three different dressings and you can add blue cheese crumbles for two people extra. The entrées are prepared on a charcoal lit grill in the middle of the restaurant, which I thought was very intriguing. Food was definitely flavorful and cooked to perfection. Will definitely be back. The bartender was super nice and made really good old-fashioneds

This is a restaurant we go to as a family once a year around the Fourth of July (and based on the license plates in the parking lot, we aren't the only out of towners). Normally the food gets the job done and the service good. I am not sure what happened recently but a lot has been lost this year. We had a party of 13 that they split into two tables as they had another large party to seat. No problem. Rye old fashioned sour was pretty good. Wait staff was hustling as best as they could. However, should have noted a problem when we didn't place an order until 45 minutes in. Salad (lettuce) arrived at 1 hour 15 minutes. Mains didn't come until 2 hours after we sat down. Went to the manager who responded "I understand but you need to understand we sat 150 people at once." A thought: if you are going to post a sign outside your restaurant about not taking reservations, don't seat the place at once and bury your kitchen! Not even an apology, an offer to comp anything, or even acknowledging this was not practice they endorse. To cap it, I ordered a half chicken Daves way that was cooked to hell and back, and could only manage the dark meat before I gave up. Im sure this place survives on locals who get preferential treatment and annual visitors who have months to forget sins and come back the next year to maintain tradition. If you aren't in either of these camps, find somewhere else that tries harder.

Steaks were amazing! Cooked right where you can watch- the chef is on pointe. Salad always served with their 3 signature dressings. Baked potatoes with butter and their version of "sour cream"-cottage cheese with chives. Don't knock it until you try it! A timeless supper club with a great Old Fashioned drink.

This is my second visit to the iconic White Stag. We arrived just before seating time, so I had a chance to truly appreciate the history inside the building. We were seated near the chef's area, which was so much fun to watch throughout our meal. Our waitress was a bit lackluster in terms of personality and service, never refilled our waters but did check on us a couple of times. Once you are seated you are served warm rolls and a wedge of iceberg lettuce. There are three dressing to choose from, all delicious but I would have preferred a creamy option in place of one. My bf and I split a porterhouse steak and the filet of haddock. We added Bermuda onions, mushrooms, and blue cheese. The onions were plentiful, wonderfully grilled and still had a good crunch. The mushrooms were tasty but we were not given many. The steak was cooked to medium rare perfection but lacked seasoning. Luckily I had some leftover blue cheese to use as a topping. The haddock was flaky but a little disappointing in flavor for all of the good things I've heard. The highlight for me was the POTATO topping! Honestly, changed my life in how simple but delicious it was. I now make this at home regularly! I'd recommend this place for its old fashioned atmosphere, but don't expect the best meal of your life.

The fillet we recently had was gigantic, much larger than the listed size. Unfortunately, it was also torched.

My family has been coming here for years. The Stag offers a pretty consistent experience and a very specific menu consisting of steak, fish and one chicken option. It's a typical Supper Club setup: you're encouraged to spend a little bit of time at the bar and have a few drinks before you're seated for dinner. However, on many occasions we were able to be seated immediately which is a plus. One of the highlights of the Stag is probably the salads: everyone at the table receives a quarter head of lettuce which you manually slice in your own wooden bowl and then douse with their three delicious homemade dressings. The dressings work well together and you end up having a sort of "soup" in your bowl. A large baked potato also arrives with your entree. The main attraction, however, is the charcoal grilled steaks. They're prepared inside with the grill master visible to the diners, so if you're paying attention you can actually see your meal being prepared. Almost every time we have gone to the Stag the steaks have been prepared absolutely on point for what you ordered. You usually don't need to "order down" a steak's preparation level from medium to medium-rare, for example, to ensure that the steak won't be torched. You're able to order sides of grilled onions and (usually fresh, on our recent visit they were canned) mushrooms, as well as a few dessert options too. Everything comes drenched in their fantastic au jus, which also serves the purpose of helping to save your steak if it's overly cooked, an experience that we've had recently. Usually, our visits are pleasant and enjoyable. The staff can sometimes be slightly difficult or seemingly annoyed, but there have been recent improvements. Just like any other business, the pandemic has presented unique challenges that require them to adjust business practicand menu items, and quality has recently declined slightly. I'm used to fresh mushrooms (and they should be fresh for a $5 price tag) and perfectly cooked steak (for the fillet it's about $36 per). I'll give them another try after things turn back to normal, and you should too.

Fortunately the cashier immediately recognized our confusion and inquired, "Is this your first time here?" And then quickly, but clearly, she explained their system which included placing your order with her and then picking it up at one of their prep stations, or selecting something from their readymade options and then returning to pay at the cashier's counter. Now that I know how it works, our next visit will be a breeze. We were looking for a light lunch so I decided to go with a freshly prepared sandwich - an avocado egg salad sandwich on toasted whole wheat. It was really green - which might not be the most appetizing color for an egg salad - but the balance of egg, avocado and herbs (including cilantro) was just right. The salad was creamy and well seasoned. The bread was under-toasted - I like to see some nice golden-brown on the surface and not just a toasted texture on a slice of bread. My dining companion took a readymade Italian sandwich which he enjoyed. While it skewed generic, it was obviously prepared the day it was sold. All in all we were satisfied with our lunch. Now that I know their system, I'm anxious to return to try the rest of their menu. While my initial rating is "average," that could easily go up. Especially because we don't have many classic deli options in the Northwoods of Wisconsin. BTW - the deli restaurant is integrated with a full service bar which is accessible through a portal into the next door building. I'll have to check that out later.

Service was friendly and quick. Never waited too long for a drink or for food to come out. All in all, very pleased with the meal. Reuben was one of the best I can recall in recent years. Crispy bread, good corned beef, plenty of sauerkraut and dressing. And I found it interesting they added smoked gouda as well. Overall, excellent, excellent sandwich! One of our party members ordered the broasted chicken, which looked and smelled amazing. She said it was excellent. Great portion size and I may try that next time. Another had the bacon Gouda burger and said it was good but messy. And he wasnt the biggest fan of the garlic bread instead of a bun, but said it was still tasty. Messy, but tasty! Other than that, drinks were not bad and were comparably priced to other places in the area. We had brandy old fashioneds for the most part. Have had better but they were still good enough to have multiple! Soup of the day was beer cheese chicken chowder, which was light and flavorful and surprisingly good (I am not a beer cheese person usually but would have this again if given the chance). Fiesta poppers for the appetizer were quick to come out and a great start before entrees rolled out. No sitting and waiting around at all between courses. Overall, very good experience and we will be coming back again to try more of the menu!

As with many cases this season they were very short staffed and trying to offer good service to those that had made reservations. Our server had several tables including one of 16 people. We all started with the salad bar which was clean and organized. They did end up running out of ranch dressing which was a disappointment but that was the only thing that fell short the entire evening. After the salads the four of us has the French onion soup which was better than most I've had. This was followed by our main course. Two of us has the 10 oz. Fillets, on had the 16oz ribeye and lastly one liver and onions. All the steaks were fabulous and the liver was also good from what I hear. There was no rushing, Karen our server timed out servings perfectly and the evening turned out spectacular. A big kudos to the Manager for getting us in.
