We always enjoy our time at "The Stag", including its more formal, supper club style, including signing in upon arrival, the lack of reservations, time at the bar before dinner, dark, dimly lit ambiance and interesting pictures on the wall. However, as with the most interesting places to eat, there is a certain way things are done here. First, you do not have many choices, and it's better that way. They know what they do well and they stick to it. First, you will have bread service and salad. The salad will be served as a quarter iceberg head, which you will cut up and apply three available dressings. The dressings can be applied individually, but are meant to be mixed. If done appropriately, you will have a soup of dressing after finishing your salad. I have never experienced a salad service like this anywhere else, and it is really fun to watch the uninitiated experience it for the first time. Second, you will get one of few protein options: beef filet, porterhouse, ribeye, or a few other, non-beef options, like swordfish, haddock, and chicken. Most people probably get the steak, and of any restaurant I have been to, this is one that you will get the exact doneness level you specify. Do not undercut your doneness to anticipate an overcooked steak - if you order medium rare, that is what you will get. The steak is delicious and is served from the open charcoal grill to your table via a charcoal heated platter, complete with a ladle of flavorful au jus. You can even watch the grill master prepare your steak; it is a unique and fun experience unlike any other restaurant I have been to. Third, you will receive a baked potato with sour cream and chives. Options aside from this are grilled onions and mushrooms. Fourth, you can get an ice cream drink for dessert, and that is about it. Very simple, very well done. It is refreshing to know a place that so understands their strong suits that they do not offer options they cannot deliver on. There are not many things left up to chance here. You will get the salad, you will get the potato, and you will get the steak or protein you ordered in the level of doneness you specify. A Hoosier obsessed with supper clubs and make it a point to go to one every time I am in Wisconsin. This one however was a huge disappointment. Cocktails were fantastic, the food was not. Steak was way undercooked had to send it back, and that is something I never do, so it was really bad. No seasoning and bland. Salad was just ok, and sides were fine. Service was painfully slow. I did not notice anyone under 55 working there. As far as the ambiance that was great, exactly what you expect in a supper club, dim and cosy. In conclusion go somewhere else. My husband got NY strip steak & me the swordfish. They were both grilled on their indoor charcoal grill that you could see your food being grilled. We went to this supper club today because it was highly recommended by someone we know. We had high expectations and we really should have set the expectations at the floor. The "salad" was just lettuce. The bread was clearly reheated as some parts of it were very hard. We were cool with that thinking steaks cooked over charcoal would be exceptional. They were the opposite. We ordered medium rare, the centers were cold and blue. The meat quality was terrible. And there was absolutely no seasoning. The server said "we rely on the charcoal, it's not for everyone" didn't offer to cook up the steaks and then when we asked for boxes she threw away one full baked potato and my husband had to stop her from tossing the other. We are now home. I seasoned and cooked the steaks up to mid rare and it's fine but for the price, I definitely expect decent quality beef. This was full of gristle. Womp womp. Prior to our first time visit at White Stag we had 2 friends of ours highly recommend it. As it turned out the four of us were very disappointed...first our server, Alicia, was way too rushed in answering our questions and taking our orders. I said to her "you seem like you're in a hurry". She responded, "I have an order that is up to serve". That is fine, but she could have excused herself and served the order and came back to us with more attentiveness. Many other good restaurants have done that before. We ordered drinks and were promptly served, although none of us cared for our cocktails or ever asked how they were. We also ordered our entrees, both couples ordered the same, filet mignon and the "colossal" shrimp. One nice touch was the entrees included a side and a wedge salad with 3 choices of very good home made dressings. Unfortunately, the wedge salad and dressings were the highlight of our dining experience. I also ordered the optional, crumbled blue cheese to add to my salad. We all enjoyed our salads. Then came our entrees. The chargrilled steaks looked great, but the "colossal" shrimp were not what we expected. The shrimps were a decent size, but what they call "colossal" are the way that they are prepared and served...8 shrimps total with sets of two intertwined to make them appear bigger than they really are. They tasted good but not "colossal" as marketed. The fillet mignon that my wife and I also shared was supposed to be prepared medium, however, it was clearly medium rare...too rare for me and not piping hot. It also had an odd taste from some seasoning but we didn't know what it was. The other couple also shared a filet mignon and after each took a bite said it tasted like cheese and couldn't eat it. Our server never came by to check on our orders until we were just about done. My wife and I did eat most of our steak although aside from being under cooked it had that weird taste. The other couple mentioned to the server they could not eat their steak. A manager came by and after a brief discussion did remove their steak from the bill. If you're local, you know how amazing this place is, and if you're a visitor let me explain to you This place is one of the best restaurants you can dine at. The food is immaculate, service is top notch and the price is more than fair considering the quality! My wife and I had the ribeye "Dave's way." This will be one of the best steaks you never knew you had to try The flavors are bold, and the steak just melts in your mouth. Everything starts with a head of lettuce and 4 salad dressings, french, clear, russian cream and caesar garlic. Dinner rolls are also included. We also ordered mushrooms and onions to go with the steak, both grilled to perfection. Lastly, you get a russet potato loaded with butter, I recommend also getting the cheese and chive topping in lue of sour cream. While the food is fantastic, our server was the star of the show! Cyndy gave us 10 star service! It's no surprise considering she has been serving her for 37 years wow! So attentive, very nice with a bright smile and clearly knows everything about this place! Last thing I will note is that I ordered "The Robin." An old fashioned with maple syrup, very tasty. As this was my birthday dinner we received a blackberry sundae This supper club has been around since the mid 1956 and clearly has a vibe that fits that era. I've been a regular at the Stag for 30 years, but I'm not coming back. We arrived around 4:30, and there was no wait, but they wouldn't seat us because all the four-person tables were full. We asked if we could sit in the other section, but they said no. We also asked if we could sit at a six-person table in the main section, even though 3 were open but they told us no and said it would be a 45-minute wait. So, we walked out and will never return to the Stag. When we left, we sat in the car for about 20 minutes looking for another place to eat, but no one else showed up during that time. The management at this place is terrible; they don't care about their customers who have been coming to their place for 30 years. Never again! read more

What a unique experience! Kinda of like dining in the round.... The chef cooks the food in the middle of the dining area! The White Stag has been family owned for, forever! And they do what they do very well. Salad, steak and potato (some other choices too). Nothing fancy... just your basic great supper club meal. The meal starts with a half a head of an iceberg lettuce. From there you choose from one of the 3 dressings on your table.... I would highly recommend the Russian and add the blue cheese! As I said, the chef prepares your meal on a charcoal grill in the middle of the dining area. White Stag has been a tradition with our family for years. We often have large groups (10-15) but not always. Unfortunately, our experiences in the last few years have been very hit or miss. We always wanted to excuse the disappointments and try again but after this last experience, we won't be back. On this occasion, It took 45 minutes just to get our orders taken, and we ended up being there for nearly three hours--without any extra courses or lingering by choice. These kinds of delays have happened for the last 4-5 years, regardless of party size. We generally all order steak and while the flavor is always solid, the ribeyes were disappointingly thin--closer to "steak-um" territory than a proper cut. In addition, all of them came out overcooked, which was a letdown for a place known for its meat and charging premium prices. From our perspective, the issue seems to be with appropriate staffing. This is a restaurant we go to as a family once a year around the Fourth of July (and based on the license plates in the parking lot, we aren't the only out of towners). Normally the food gets the job done and the service good. I am not sure what happened recently but a lot has been lost this year. We had a party of 13 that they split into two tables as they had another large party to seat. No problem. Rye old fashioned sour was pretty good. Wait staff was hustling as best as they could. However, should have noted a problem when we didn't place an order until 45 minutes in. Salad (lettuce) arrived at 1 hour 15 minutes. Mains didn't come until 2 hours after we sat down. Went to the manager who responded "I understand but you need to understand we sat 150 people at once." A thought: if you are going to post a sign outside your restaurant about not taking reservations, don't seat the place at once and bury your kitchen! Not even an apology, an offer to comp anything, or even acknowledging this was not practice they endorse. To cap it, I ordered a half chicken Daves way that was cooked to hell and back, and could only manage the dark meat before I gave up. Im sure this place survives on locals who get preferential treatment and annual visitors who have months to forget sins and come back the next year to maintain tradition. This is my second visit to the iconic White Stag. We arrived just before seating time, so I had a chance to truly appreciate the history inside the building. We were seated near the chef's area, which was so much fun to watch throughout our meal. Our waitress was a bit lackluster in terms of personality and service, never refilled our waters but did check on us a couple of times. Once you are seated you are served warm rolls and a wedge of iceberg lettuce. There are three dressing to choose from, all delicious but I would have preferred a creamy option in place of one. My bf and I split a porterhouse steak and the filet of haddock. We added Bermuda onions, mushrooms, and blue cheese. The onions were plentiful, wonderfully grilled and still had a good crunch. The mushrooms were tasty but we were not given many. The steak was cooked to medium rare perfection but lacked seasoning. Luckily I had some leftover blue cheese to use as a topping. The haddock was flaky but a little disappointing in flavor for all of the good things I've heard. The highlight for me was the POTATO topping! Honestly, changed my life in how simple but delicious it was. I now make this at home regularly! Yum! Best grilled shrimp I've had in years.... Price is not cheap for the shrimp but very affordable for what you get. The menu is very limited and all meals come with their wedge salad and a side of blue cheese. Their signature salad dressings are house made and you can mix them to your liking. We had a table for 8 people and tried a variety of items on the menu. Cost for the entire dinner was under $300 and that was including sodas, side of onion (see picture) and three alcoholic beverages. Being a Chicagoan I know that I am used to paying higher prices for meals so this bill was not a surprise for me but Eagle River area does not have very many options and this place is a must try! There's a reason why they have been in business for I don't even know how long.... Highly recommend taking your family out for dinner-there is no kids menu but the chicken and baked potato can easily be shared with multiple little kiddos. Fyi- don't get the pork chops. Ribeyes were more like New York's with almost zero decal. My husbands medium rare was more medium and my medium I'm was more medium rare to rare so we traded. Our friends medium well filet was more medium rare. Service was very attentive but the restaurant was far too busy and short staffed (like most of the restaurants up here right now) to bother her with the doneness. We have been going to the White Stag for 30 years. It has always been our goto. The salad and homemade dressing are fantastic. The baked potato with the chive sauce is also fantastic. The ambiance is great. Unfortunately the steaks were not very good. The strip steaks and ribeyes had a lot of grizzle. Some friends also told us they had some bad experience with the steaks also. I would rather pay a few dollars more for a better cut. I hope they read this review. I am really hoping they can make some improvements! read more

Don't waste your time. They were busy we had to wait an hour for our table. Took 15 minutes for somebody to come by after we seated to get a drink order. Server was rude and did not care at all. She was rolling her eyes as we put our order of drinks in. We had 13 people 2 tables and both tables had same issues. The steak was probably the worst I ever had. It was thin. I ordered medium and it was well done. I should have returned it, but I did not. I ordered the ribeye. The bill was over $600 with the tip.
