First time here and wasn't too impressed with the food. I had the broasted chicken and I asked for it Dave's way (which is suppose to be topped off with garlic or something), the description on the menu said "fall of the bone", and I and also 2 other people from our table thought it was pretty dry and also didn't have any "garlic" flavor to it. The chicken was huge as you can see pictured but too bad it didn't taste good. I had a bite of the filet and that was definitely way better than the chicken. They have quite a small menu so I was expecting everything on the menu to be spectacular. I also didn't like that they have a speaker in the restaurant with someone yelling out the servers name and the ticket number..they had music playing and then every now and then it would cut off because of the person on the speaker yelling out orders. The ny strip steaks at this place should only be medium or better. I had one medium rare and has to bail on about 1/2 of the steak. For the cost and the area, there are better options out there for a steak. This is clearly a steak house as that is really the main items on the menu, and the cuts we got were not up to par. The place was doing a very good job of cleaning between diners but that seems to be the end of their Covid precautions. They did not seem to adjust their tables to allow for social distancing. The seating was pretty jammed even though there were other sections which could have been opened up to allow more social distancing. Only one of the staff was wearing a mask, if that sort of thing matters to you. I long for the day in which my reviews to myself do not have to include places Covid precautions. I would give them 2.5 stars if they had that. The staff was good, but the food was not worth it. read more

My two kids went to white stag the leadership program this year the very first time because they had friends coming with them. I felt so nervous when they were away and kept wondering how they would look like after a week. It was just wonderful to see them marching to the ceremony and in great spirit. On the way back, two kids talked a lot, the food, the activities, the team members and the patrol leaders. My husband and I were listening to them but all smiling. Each every kid should have an opportunity to go white stag at least once. Highly recommended! read more

Had a really great dinner at the White Stag Inn. Our server was Daleigh and she was fantastic. Very energetic, nice and had great recommendations. For entrees, we got the ribeye and haddock Dave's way (with garlic) and both were great. I was not super impressed with the homemade salad dressings but still fun to mix them. Would be nice if there was a little more to the salad like cucumbers, carrots and tomatoes. Overall, we really enjoyed the traditional dining experience and the great service. read more

I ordered the Kasseler Rippchen and it was the saltiest I have ever eaten. I told the waitress, and she said many customers have mentioned this. Her statement was, it comes from the supplier that way and there's nothing she could do about it. I then asked for the manager who basically said that's just the way it is. He did not offer and conciliation or offer a different meal. He was firm on that's the way it is. It comes from the supplier like that. I adamantly said take it off the bill. Due to their poor customer support I said I do not want anything else. So they then proceeded to charge me for the salad & potato that came with the meal. As part of our tour of Wisconsin Supper Clubs we had dinner at the White Stag this evening. We arrived at 5:00 and were seated and served immediately. When we left it was very busy as it tends to be on Saturdays in the summer. My wife and I both had steaks. She had filet mignon and I had the skewered steaks. Both were cooked perfectly. Cooking them over charcoal gives them a delicious carmelized crust. We both accepted the offered au jus, and it was delish. We are also fans of the wedge salads with three home made dressings. The menu at the White Stag is small. They do a few things very well with a lot of tradition. I love this place. Complaining about wait times in a Northwoods restaurant over 4th of July is like complaining about the church being too small at Christmas mass. read more

This is a place we have come for years and usually it offers really good steaks and pork chops, and I love the baked potato with cottage cheese and chive mix. We haven't been in a few years and decided to go back. We arrived at 4:45 and were one of the first tables seated (they don't take reservations), but it took 2 hours to get our food to us. It was clear they either forgot or were rushing because my medium filet was charred on the outside and raw in the middle. Two other people got cold steaks and the potatoes were not hot (but at least warm). This places holds a lot of nostalgia for us because we grew up coming here, but the food is not what I remember. read more

By far my favorite spot in the Northwoods. I have been coming since I was a little girl, 40 years ago, and my parents for years before that. So glad it hasn't changed a bit. There's a ton of nostalgia included in the 5 stars but the food is really great. All things from the flame broiled fire inside and you can watch the chef as he tends the meat on the fire. The salad is my favorite. It's a simple wedge, but 3 homemade dressings designed to mix. Entree comes with baked potato, loads of butter and tasty homemade cottage cheese/chive topping. Homey, north woodsy atmosphere, dim with beautiful paintings on the wall and a traditional old fashioned bar. It is delicious in its simplicity. Please never change! read more

Excellent food and service on a busy Labor Day weekend. Wait time estimate was even less than the estimate. Nice pacing as you're not seated until they can serve you. Waited at the bar with a generous pour on cocktails and very very busy bartenders who managed to still be friendly and welcoming. We've passed this place a hundred times but our first visit. From the minute, our party of 4 walked in until the minute we left, the entire dining experience was terrible. The hostess was very pleasant and told us it would be about a 10 minute wait (they do not accept reservations). The bartender, whom we found out is the manager and owner, was not friendly and actually very rude. Our waitress never introduced herself and again very unfriendly. When she brought, the 3 compartment salad dressings to our table, she very roughly put it on our table causing one of the salad spoons to the floor. She stated she'd go get a new spoon which never happened. Once our steaks were brought to our table she took the prongs and started pushing the prong into our steaks stating "I just told the chef off and he's not talking to me now so I don't know which steaks are medium or medium rare"! She then said she'd bring our baked potatoes to us when they were ready. After hearing the chef call out table 19, and having all of us with only half our steak left, I got up to find our potatoes. I asked the chef and he said "yes there are potatoes and he'd been calling table 19 twice for our waitress to come and get them. Our waitress then came up behind me and very meanly stated "I'll get them". We finally asked for a manager and she very sarcastically said "Oh yes he'll be happy to speak to you". The manager/owner/bartender showed up at our table and stated "We didn't have potatoes ready". All you get is a baked potato, no other potato is available at this restaurant. He walked away and we heard nothing from him again. The waitress then stood between our table and another table of 4 and loudly said "There's always that one"! Never asked if we needed a drink, never brought butter for the rolls and never mentioned or inquired on mushrooms or onions to accompany our steaks. Oh how the mighty have fallen... I'm not sure what happened, this was previously my favorite place in the area to get a great filet. Any time this place comes up in conversation the salad is always a hot topic that so many seem to dislike but I absolutely love the simplicity of it. The house dressing are amazing - that's what it's all about. The last two times I have been there the chef (who has been the one there ever since I can remember) seemed generally unhappy. This definitely translates in to the steaks he is cooking! Overcooked, charred and hard in some areas. The service has also been spotty. I get that the service industry can wear a person down but if you put on a smile for 30 seconds while you are at the table you are serving it is sure to leave a better impression I promise you that! read more

I was looking forward to eating here, as it was such a great restaurant in the past when I would come up north with my family. Unfortunately, we did not have the experience we expected. We came with a larger group (14) and realized that we would need to be flexible and patient - we were all in a great mood and were looking forward to a good dinner. Unfortunately , the hostess and bartender were rude to us from the start, and acted like they were doing us a favor by serving us. We probably should have left at the beginning. We were seated quite quickly (probably because they have lost customers throughout the years). We were seated by the restroom, and the smell was quite unpleasant. The carpeting in the room was stained and dirty. There are only 3 dressing options for the iceberg wedge salad that is served. There are no other toppings offered for the salad with the exception of blue cheese crumbles (and there is a charge if you do get the crumbles). The salad bowls are worn out and need to be replaced. The entrees are overpriced for the quality - I've had much better meat and potatoes for substantially less. All the meat was brought out in a big heap on a platter. I've never seen that before, and it was somewhat off-putting. The one silver lining is that our waitress was very friendly and helpful. She handled our group well and was kind. Due to policy, we were only allowed one check per the table (no exceptions!!), and it probably would have been easier for her if they allowed us to separate our bills. It was stressful at the end when we were trying to figure out the complicated check. (Note that you cannot pay via credit card at the bar so we had a stack of bar receipts that were stapled to our dinner bill.) All in all, a bad experience. We will not be back. read more

While the waitstaff was wonderful (and apologetic) the food was not what it was on my last visit, about 6 years ago. I ordered the 16 oz. strip, but got a steak about half that size. The 1/2 in. , or less, thick steak was so overcooked (ordered medium, got well-well done) I could not eat it and sent it back. The replacement, while now undercooked, was of the same small size and poor quality. Of the 3 steaks ordered in our group, all were overcooked, thin and of poor quality. We sure hope they can recover as there are many better options around now. read more

The White Stag Inn is one of the best Steak Houses. The food is excellent, and prices are good. $19 En Brochetts is so good. Love the salads too. We had a nice, fancier meal here during our stay in Eagle River and we were able to try a variety of different items here. The special on the Saturday night we came was prime rib, both in a Queen and larger King cut for an extra $4. I believe my Queen was $24. My husband got the pork schnitzel, which was $19. We shared the duck crab Rangoon appetizer for $12, and he got the beer cheese soup while I opted for the clam chowder. We were offered rolls and their delicious sweet cinnamon (?) butter. My cut of prime rib definitely had that nice fat cap on it, which I thought added flavor. My husband enjoyed his schnitzel and we both got a spiced apple as a side! His dish came with this cabbage slaw that was tasty as well. I went with mashed potatoes and added mushrooms to my prime rib. Everything was great and the big portions matched the higher prices. Their drinks are smooth and expertly crafted, the homemade salad dressings are perfect in their simplicity, and their dinners are portioned for Paul Bunyan himself to eat! We have come here for around 60 years and have always had good meals. The brandy old fashioned tasted of bitters with little brandy taste. Our fish was dry and over cooked. The mushrooms tasted of sterno or charcoal lighter. The onions were charred but under cooked. This had always been a great place to eat. The bartender and cook may be new but they need to return The Stag to it's former quality. read more

Really like being able to watch the steaks get grilled in the restaurant. My only negative is that I ordered their specialty pork chop and it was so salty I couldn't eat it. Visited for a birthday celebration - arrived at 5:00 - they were 6 of us. Only 1 cook - and our waitress was extremely overworked. Food took f o r e v e r. We ordered 5 haddock and 1 shrimp. Two entrees were served and there was a problem - it will just be another 10 minutes for the others to get their food. Looked at the bill after departing - felt for sure that I was over-charged. Called and was told that ONLY the manager had access to the receipts and then I was told in a rather snippy voice that she would have him call me...guess what, it is now almost 3 weeks later and still no call from the manager. I grew up coming to White Stag and had not been back for a very long time. We read the negative reviews but decided to give it a try. We went on Saturday night 8/20/22 and were not disappointed. 15 minute wait to be seated. Sat at the bar and had Old Fashions while we waited, excellent. My wife and I had steak and both were hot and cooked correctly as were the potatoes. Salad was fresh and tasty. Our server was very busy but did a great job checking on us. I think almost any restaurant in the north woods is having trouble finding people to work so you have to take the negative reviews about chefs and servers with a grain of salt. Literally if asked what I wanted for my last meal, I'd ask for the Shrimp from the White Stag Inn, complete with a whiskey old fashioned sweet, their phenomenal wedge salad with blue cheese crumbles, those phenomenal dressings, that potato with the best sour cream/cream cheese topping to die for and those hot fresh rolls. It's literally the absolute perfect meal, each and every time. If you want chicken fingers and French fries go elsewhere, this is a grown up place with classic supper club vibes, the art on the walls, the mood lighting, the dinner served from a cart, it's just everything that anyone could ever want. This is an outstanding steakhouse, an excellent example of the classic Wisconsin supper club. Lovely interior, beautiful bar, nice dining rooms. The menu is simple but good. The steaks and chops are perfectly grilled in an open kitchen. Charcoal fired grill. The iceberg lettuce salad seems odd at first, but by drizzling all three dressings on it, it becomes incredibly delicious. Excellent staff. Polite, helpful, and hard working. Good barman. Last weekend we went for my Birthday and I had the same wonderful meal I had 20 years ago. Same wedge salad with 3 homemade dressings, same perfectly cooked baked potato with lots of butter and chive cottage cheese, and a tender, delicious, perfectly cooked porterhouse. I even had a complimentary dish of sherbert courtesy of the grill master. I would rather eat at a restraunt that does a few things well than pick from an extensive menu that is all over the map. White Stag, long in the tooth, past its prime, living off the reputation. Supper Club Status: Revoked To start, I've lived in Eagle River on and off for the last 30 years. Been to the Stag occasionally with Madisonian relatives, who've made it part of their ritual when visiting Vilas County. Such was the case this past Saturday evening, when they treated us to a meal there. I paid the bar tab. First, I've been there in the height of the summer rush, where every table was full, and one had to wait outside for a seat at the bar. Not so Saturday, where there were about 30% of the tables open in the main room, and about 70% open in the back...yet we were told about a 30-minute wait. Fortunately (at least I thought it was), four seats opened up at the bar. After a 5-minute wait there, the less than cordial bartender took our drink orders, one at a time, three of which were Old Fashioneds, of course. When I was bartending at a busy golf course, I would take the orders for four at a time with no hesitancy, and line them up and make them. Three Old Fashioneds would take less than a minute to make, tops. Full disclosure, I was a Wisconsin State "licensed" bartender in the years I was in college, and learned the importance of producing the State Drink of Wisconsin properly, which involves muddling. I am also a big Supper Club aficiando, and love the tradition of a great meal and a fabulous Old Fashioned, "The kind Old Dad used to make!" Instead, Old Cheery threw ice in the glass, dumped what looked like a house made concoction of some kind in, then the booze and mixer, and garnished with a cherry on a bamboo toothpick. Tasted awful, asked him for an orange slice, and his curt response was "we don't have any oranges". I then asked him for additional bitters, expecting to see the ol' Angostura bottle to come out, but instead got more of the house concoction, which didn't help. Slammed down the rest of the "Old Fashioned" as our table was ready, and ordered a double whiskey for the table (rail whiskey there is Fleischmans). Result plus a 15% tip (I did used to work the wrong side of the bar, mind you)....$45 for 3 Old Fashioneds, an Amaretto and 7, and a double whiskey. Seriously, if you don't have the interest to properly produce a muddled Old Fashioned at what is perceived to be a high-dollar supper club, you are in disdain of your clientele. The meal: Again, in full disclosure, I am a person who enjoys a good supper (if you could see me, you would understand), and actually likes to cook. I've lived around the country, and have picked up many recipes and methods along the way. Here's where the Old Stag has lost it. "The same menu forever" is the claim to fame. From that one concept it would work, plus the grill in the middle of the room touch, but only if the quality of the dining experience was consistently top notch. Otherwise, and from reading other glowing reviews to the contrary, a slow spiraling descent is perhaps harder to discover. The order: Rib Eye Supreme, 3/4 lb, medium rare, $27 Icelandic Fillet of Haddock, $23 En Brochette Dave's Way, medium rare, sirloin "Little steaks on a skewer, 9 oz, $19 Chicken ("Succulent, falls from the bone!), Dave's Way, $18 Total Food Bill, with $4.50 for 2 oz of blue cheese crumbles, $91.50 What you get: Really good hot rolls with cold slabs of butter (Why, Lord, Why?). 1/5 head of Iceberg, with browning and limp outside leaves, and White Stag clear French, Russian Cream and Caesar dressings. An actually baked russet potato (no foil), served sliced with a frozen lump of butter shoved inside. The above were the highlight for the meal. En Brochette, Dave's Way: This was the winner here, nicely medium rare, tender, and juicy with the au jus. The Rib Eye Supreme: Looked like it started out in life as a half-inch steak, and was served medium, shriveled up, blackened, and appeared from the remains that at the end it had been about 30% fat, etc. I did some time in Texas in exchange for purgatory time, so I know what a good ribeye looks like. Believe me, down there a proper ribeye is as important as a proper Old Fashioned up here. This one was, in a word, garbage. The Icelandic Fillet of Haddock: Appeared scorched and dry, despite the drawn butter and tartar sauce. Mine was "The Chicken, Dave's Way": Apparently, Dave liked his half yardbird chokingly dry and deeply charred. The breast had no moisture to it whatever, and even the leg and thigh were dessicated. I physically scraped the burned skin in front of the waitress, and asked her if this was normal: I got the Alfred E. Neuman "What Me Worry?" shrug. All in all, a big disappointment, especially for the relatives, who were looking to enjoy a meal from years past. There are plenty of other, much better places in a 20-mile radius, for a quality Supper Club experience. The lousy drinks, poor food, coupled with a total bill that would buy three weeks of good groceries, I'll not be returning. Ever. read more
